Gorgeous design, my pick would be a manual 550 in a dark blue with tan leather!
I'd personally plonk for the WSR version of this car. Ultra rare and with a very tasty spec. Roll cage covered in leather, the handling pack and even stiffer roll bars. Only 34 made I believe and still very much attainable.

In my country for company owners the best way to duck the taxes is to get some "costs" for the company. It's made with a family fleet of some expensive vehicles. All BMW 550, 750, all Audi 5, or 6, then the Porsches from Boxster to Cayenne all of this class cars fall into this space. No problem to sort out a Ferrari 550 here.

Same as in some Hondas of the time, dc2, accord type r etc
Porsche still makes those steering wheels even today.
The funny thing is that they thought it was too bulky as a result of the newly added airbag!

@@jaymyers6452 Not really, I guess the closest thing now is that, albeit sexy, 812superfast got it lacks the rawness of the 550 Maranello. I rode passenger in the 'nello once and have sat in the 812 at the dealer. that later car seems like computer driven spaceship. the 'nello seems like a mechanical marvel.

It's styling is quite elegant and doesn't over do it. The 550 Marenello might not look so bold as the others, but that actually makes it very appealing. It's nice not to attract a lot of attention.

Crazy that this came out in 1996...styling looks about 10 years newer.
For me the styling is poor, those front air vents are fugly and the rest is plain with just a kink over the rear wheels, not for me.

@@HanSolo__ I just rewatched the video and I don't know what the hell I was on about. Looks very classy to me, something you wouldn't be embarrassed to turn up in to a first date or golf outing etc. Maybe I should go looking for something with go faster stripes which would be more to my taste. :D
@@MonaichFother I would say there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a car with the stripes. As long as you do use it on the track or some specified model sport event. I mean you have to stay recognizable on the competition right? With 20-ish simmilar looking Porsche 944 S2 Turbo S or 20+ Mitsu Lancers Evo 9 Not only for your service/help but for the judges. If you are racing stock machine and you cant afford 2nd car for daily. Run it with stripes all the way. Cheers :)
Well the 575, which was an updated version of this car, was produced until 06, so you aren't exactly wrong.
As always wonderful review. Funny how Ferrari had an almost "Aston Martin" philosophy when producing this car. Sober and sleek design, few badges, attention to detail, and a lot of power if needed.
sdfsfsf notice how when Aston have updated their 9 and Rapids they added a little ducks arse spoiler just like this? Totally agre re the styling analogy, the last truly elegant Ferrari that put elegance ahead of iPhone snapper appeal.

The nice thing about Jay Leno's Garage is having the owners of the cars that give their experiences with them
The problem with Jay Leno is that he does not know much about cars. Most comments are sheer superlatives, a typical American trend to find that unique fact or statistic for everything. Harry, on the other hand, characterizes his cars, he can compare year models, he notices design patterns of the times, he does his homework out of passion. He is also willing to get his hands dirty fixing or cleaning his own cars. Harry has a way of appropriating his vehicles where Jay remains at the sideline, a pure spectator, a child with cash incapable of an appreciation that only true immersion confers..

Jay Leno once started talking about cars at a concours and he went for 3 hours sorting out every important car ever made from the 1890s to the current day with mindblowing knowledge and information on every single one, right out of the top of his head. Jay is a freaking automotive encyclopedia and works on cars himself most ot his day!

Good lord, the nose on that car is incredible. Always loved the original 550 design, but never appreciated how low slung that nose is. Gorgeous.
Harry just does the best car reviews on the internet. I've watched this particular video multiple times. Its so refreshing to listen to an unbiased review. Helps that I own one of these 550 Maranellos but I never get tired of hearing about them.
This is a car from my youth and somehow looks better now than ever. Also a proper review delivering so much knowledge and experience that could only come from having owned and lived with this car. Awesome! Thanks Harry

Awesome video. It's cool hearing you talk about the car and how knowledgeable you are about it. It's neat to see a real world review on a car like this. It was definitely ahead of it's time in terms of performance and styling. It's a very beautiful car and still holds up well today.

Best looking Ferrari IMO. A silver Maranello is so understated it's almost socially acceptable.

Harry, of all your video's, this is the one one where you're smiling for 25 minutes. You may not know it but you and the last V12 front engine manual gearbox prodotti di Maranello are meant for each other. My favorite video since harrismonkey hit 30mph in his 2CV....thanx

I stand corrected...according to Wikipedia, 30 were made.
True, but the car was designed for the F1 gearbox and I have heard from a credible source that the 599 and also the 612 were horrible to drive with a manual gearbox.
575 also had manuals available... dunno about the 599 being horrible to drive, the videos I've seen suggest it's fine. No idea about the 612.
My source is a Ferrari dealer. He told me, the later cars (575 and even more so the 599 and 612) were designed around and for the F1 gearbox, the ECU and the whole set up where not programmed for a manual gearbox, hence the F1 suits the cars much better. Apparently the 550 was the last "real" manual gearbox Ferrari...
I'm still mad that my Father bought a 996 Turbo over my recommendation of one of these 8 years ago! Both have appreciated but these considerably more so. I just feel that the 550 is so much more special.
Yeah but he could have driven the 996 a lot... the 550 would have to be garaged almost indefinitely for it to appreciate.
If only he got a 993 turbo instead

See my chat above but I was in the process of buying and demoing a 996 Turbo X50 like your father, and it was a real A road weapon, but without the aesthetics of the 550 and of course not that wonderful V12, hence my decision to buy the Maranello instead.
One has much lower maintenance costs and better reliability...the Porsche 996 911 Turbo.
Another enjoyable video as always Harry - love your no nonsense approach and I always learn something along the way! I've always loved the 550 Maranello - this was a great era for Ferrari! While I like some of the current range they are almost too much 'in your face' - during this period they were just that bit more elegant I feel! Thanks for the upload - keep up the good work!

Had a 1999 550. loved it! daily driver for years as well as drove from Virginia to Texas.
Beautiful car, such a sexy shifter, but not such a race car that you can't drive it whenever you want. Sometimes even the exotic manufacturers get it just right!

Not to get too literary on you, but to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, " Doug Demuro knows the price of everything and the value of nothing" while Harry is exactly the opposite. He can appreciate the value of the Ferrari without having to say, "Why the 550 Maranello is worth some outrageous figure he pulled out of.... " I don't look at Demuro's videos any more because he's so annoying.

All 550 were manuals 575 were mostly Autos but the conversion is waaaay to expensive to really consider it

Its crazy how valuable these are, but a v12 Mercedes of the era, is worth $3000
04dram04 yeah my friend just got a '96 S600 V12 at auction for $3000 Canadian, absolutely ridiculous, probably because it's an old luxury car before a classic performance car
04dram04 thats because the oil coolers leak and cost several thousand to repair, also the coil packs are about $1000 each. The suspensions cost $10,000 to replace, its a maintenance nightmare when they get old.

It's because they are luxury cars so it's muffled up to be quiet. The 6.0L V12 is the same one used in the first Zonda so it's possible to make the luxo-barge S600 sound like it with a new exhaust system.

You did it again!! great vid. I just can't say enough good things about your real world, real exotic car reviews. And there is something about car's with 20y, that are now becoming very interesting, because they are pretty actual in several terms but still with lots of analog inputs, which we came to love and desire in this digital era we live in. If I would be nit picking, I could just say that considering the kind of cars you usually review, you could have a better MIC, probably a personal (in-shirt) MIC (I don't know the exact designation), for a better and more clear sound when you're pushing the car. Other than this, I don't have anything else to pick on, or even suggest. Just great vid in the end. Thx, for this.

Pretty good, but I have got to disagree with you about when Luca di Montezimolo arived on the scene. He was Enzo's right hand man at the age of 26 in about 1973. He subsequently ran the whole Ferrari outfit including the F1 side extremely well for decades until the thuggish, not very intelligent head of parent company Fiat Auto, Sergio Marcchione decided that Ferrari exclusivity & desirability (Which has everything to do with used car prices, hence desirability when new) were very secondary considerations to short term profit, & production should increase by 40%. di Montezimolo didn't agree, so di Montezimolo was booted out With a 26 million Euro fu** off gift. A bit too early to accurately assess the long-term effects & implications of this move, but I doubt if it will enhance Ferrari's reputation in the long term.
Frank Cree - you are both in fact correct but Harry was of course referring to LdM's return to Ferrari after doing other jobs in the Fiat empire & The Americas cup & Italia 90 etc

Love the video, and nice to hear you actually drove your 550 instead of treating it like a museum piece. Personaly, I like the styling of the 456 (pre-facelift) more than the 550.
I'm sure the fog lights on the 550 cost more than my 2017 V6 Honda Accord Coupe. Beautiful car, nonetheless.
And I bet in the real world your Honda is faster, more comfortable and more enjoyable to drive than the Ferrari. Supercars are cartoon cars.

The truly classy, graceful lines from Ferrari's beginning in the late 1940's through the early/mid-90's were the most attractive years, in my opinion. The onset of 4-wheeled video games with exaggerated sculptures and electric hybrids are just a different vehicle and, to me, are a totally different class of machine. Many like them but the appeal just doesn't reach me like the earlier era... and not just with the Ferrari, but many of the other cars of those same periods.
Harry's style and this fine older Ferrari fit together like "hand-in-glove." I happened to be in San Francisco traffic for a couple of miles down 19th Avenue one sunny afternoon, along side one of these when they were brand new. I thought then that it was one of the classiest cars I'd ever seen and my opinion hasn't diminished the slightest bit since then. It is one of Ferrari's finest ever. It's too bad that Enzo didn't live long enough to have seen it. I think he would have approved very much!

Lovely to see this again - remembering mine (apart from the fact that the maintenance almost broke me...), yes, it has a 110 litre tank, and a fuel gauge the size of a coin, which didn't move for the first 25 litres/140 miles, worked ok until halfway, then dropped to read zero, so you never dared pass a petrol station. Stunning thing. It owns you, mind...
