Long Gone YouTube Features - Part 2

- Nothing is certain on UA-cam. This holds true not only for the lack of success, or lack thereof, a creator can experience, but for the overall form and structure of the website as well.
UA-cam is constantly changing. As creators and viewers, we’re accustomed to embracing new trends and features, but also saying goodbye to ones we grew to know and take for granted.
In this video we go through several discontinued UA-cam features, some of which were beloved by the community, and others not so much.

Removing community contributions citing "low usage" was the dumbest decision ever, rivaled only by the removal of dislikes.
Of course the usage will be low, with the amount of videos getting uploaded every minute.
Also, community contributions are of course done by human users with a better level of linguistic literacy. But now, it is being done by some dumbass AI. It may work affirmative for english narrations, but it messes the hell up by mistaking foreign words with romanized nonsense.
Even this newfangled auto captioning had ruined some several attempts by me to deliver some deadpan humor in my videos that mostly feature little to no spoken word (just musical experiments.) The autocaps come into play generating some stupid "do", "yeah", [Music], [Applause] stuff I never ask for. And they keeps drawing over every caption I wrote by myself!
In abstract, community contributions is a feature that I believe a must to exist. In this scenario, even the original creator can't publish the subtitle typed by himself in front of this weird autogenerated caption massacre.
What a waste of time I spent translating Kurzgesagt subtitles only for them to be removed. Probably did a couple of dozens. Now they are all gone.
@@Azivegu they removed old contribution too omg
UA-cam's Logic: "We are committed to ensuring accessibility to all by removing accessibility options. We also want to make sure we improve overall satisfaction by removing every feature that provided you with satisfaction. Wow, why does everyone hate me? I've done nothing wrong."
Yes
Screw them for messing up so much
I miss info card polls. It gives a little more engagement to videos and could've been implemented really well into live streams.
Most of the time, these features are removed just because it doesn’t work really well on mobile devices, where most users nowadays are watching UA-cam on. It’s understandably sucks, but it also sucks when you see implementations of these deprecated features on mobile was just done half-baked or didn’t worked at all.
@@poetryflynn3712 if we’re talking about infocards, most channels do use infocards, you can barely find a channel that didn’t use it, and most mobile users do watched these channels that used them. While I was talking about how these deperecated features were half-baked or didn’t worked at all on mobile, I will admit that infocards is one of the exceptions to that, infocards actually does work well on mobile, and most mobile users do benefit from them. Can’t say the same about the other features though.
Can’t agree more on the second paragraph.
I used the Private Messages feature all the time back in the day.
And now, if you want to message a small creator who doesn't have a social media page, you can't do that at all...
@Sully Price " who doesn't have a social media page"
True. It was also an easy way to set up a small collab with another
We definitely need a new platform. I miss the times when UA-cam was actually about "broadcast yourself".
We already have a new platform, Vimeo and Dailymotion are these new platforms that tried to be that “new platforms”. Of course, neither you nor me nor everyone else would want to use these sites, just because it ain’t UA-cam.
The new UA-cam competitors that actually have a chance against Google is Rumble, BitChute and Odysee and out of these three I'd say that Odysee is so far the clear winner due to it's lack of censorship due to how the LBRY network that it's based on using blockchain technology which is mostly censorship resistant and that you can upload more than videos but also music (audio files), 3d CAD files (e.g. 3d printed gun files) among other things...
I agree, it’s all click bait and popular channels here now and the people in charge at UA-cam suck since they just remove features people love.
BitChute, Rumble, Odysee :)
I have a project in called "Meigle" and "Mistigree" who are based of old social media features like UA-cam
I still miss the Snake Game, when it and Annotations were removed, it felt like the beginning of something completely different
Since you asked, yes I have used UA-cam video editor back in the day, but not for uploading to UA-cam. It was probably the easiest to use online video merger out there. No one is going to pay Adobe to just merge or split a video. And windows movie maker is just a pain to work in.
If you still need to do it today and are not afraid of terminal/cmd window: ffmpeg is the golden standard for such things. Even without re-encoding. So no quality is being lost

I have been on UA-cam since like 2009 on some of my old accounts so I remember a lot of these.
The snake game was a favourite of mine to show friends as I it was kind of not well known at the time
ofc ofc. I have been on UA-cam since like 2007 with this account, so I remember all of these.
@@funloh but you have no pfp. Kinda seems like a bought account lmao.
@@ravemasterdbzwwe ofc ofc
@@ravemasterdbzwwe A lot of users of all join-dates have no profile, that's not a good indicator.
I actually came across it accidentally and was like what the freak. But I do remember an article from back in 2009 mentioned it, tried it out, and it did work. However, I would hate to say this but Snake on the Intellivision is a lot more fun compared to the snake game on the youtube video, that's just me. On the Intellivision game it's more of how long you can outlast your opponents, where as the snake game was just zooming around all over the screen at a fast pace. And keep in mind, youtube use to use Adobe Flash Player before using HTML. So you literally had to install Adobe Flash Player into your computer's hard drive before playing videos. Otherwise it'll give you a notice saying "Adobe Flash Player has not been installed on this computer". So there's that.
6:50 you're telling me that UA-cam, with thousands of developers, wasn't able to port text bubbles to mobile phones?
lmao
maybe it was just too impractical because mobile are touch screen devices (like having annotations in the middle of the screen : how could you pause the video ?)
Annotations was horrible on phones, it was encroaching on screen real estate on devices that have barely any of it, not to mention creators that were just abusing it without care.
@@Skanderbeg3.1415 there are a lot of ways to implement without it being a bad experience, like double touching to open links, and/or the ability to move annotations
I still remember the editor and mourn the day they disabled it. Every time I upload something, I wish it was there, it's so much easier than opening Premiere Pro for every tiny thing I notice, or if my device isn't powerful enough, just edit on YT.
We seriously need to bring collections back
There is the PocketTube addon, but it doesn't have super great functionality. It is a bit clumsy in adding subs to a collection, and I had gone so long without using collections that I just never used it.
Yeah, I realized I'm subbed to 500+ creators. Would be sick if I could add them to customizable groups based on content type. Like, if the subscription box isn't going to show me all of the videos from my subscriptions then give me a faster way to sift through them.

Man I miss annotations. They were a really cool and helpful tool especially for correcting mistakes and making interactive "choose your own adventure" videos. The people behind UA-cam are absolute morons.
I loved interactive videos so much.
A feature that's been gone for a very long time now is video replies. They would be featured right underneath the video they were replying to, above even text comments.
That's on the previous video.
almost all of these features were actually useful
and the removal of public dislikes just makes me sad
Ah yes, direct messages, Discussion, info cards... I miss them.
I just KNEW that community subtitles were going to be in this video. Funny how they remove those while auto-generated subtitles are horrific as... Honestly, I can't even describe the horribleness of the horrific UA-cam auto-generated subtitles.
It's crazy how now, we're talking about how horrible it is that UA-cam is removing these features, but then in the future, UA-cam is probably going to remove so much more crucial features that many creators use, and we'll never have something to not complain about when Susan Wojickikcickcikc makes a decision.
In a nutshell, UA-cam keeps overhauling itself ThRiVinG to give its users an underwhelming experience.
The annotations feature could have probably been updated into something less clunky instead of being removed because I remember allot of UA-camrs using them to correct mistakes in-video as opposed to making a long list in the comment section.
G+ comments always felt like the point where UA-cam started going downhill.
As soon as I seen the video title the first thing that came to mind was collections. I could use UA-cam more organised. I had a collection of educational, fit, music lists
not gonna lie everytime i see old youtube i get upset over how many good features were removed and how the guis were made worse and i wish i used youtube on a computer back in the day after seeing how good youtube was
I miss seeing Rebecca Black's Friday video dislikes. I was there when it got disliked to hell, I even sent some of mine on my old account, bummer UA-cam removed it. Great content as always CHM Tech, keep it up!
UA-cam used to be so good
i agree
its sad to see youtube going worse and worse every year and when i see old youtube 2005-2013 i get upset how many features got removed and the gui was made worse
Removing dislike was just to save big corporations failed PR and ads.
I was going to use the Editor myself until I found out that it was removed. Making a highlights compilation was a perfect reason to keep it
I remember:
Dislike
Full sub count
Annotations (a bit)
Direct messages(the mobile version officially introduced in 2017- 2019 but in Hong Kong, where I live, it didn’t appear until 2018 and I never really used it since discord was already booming at that age)
Community captions (yes I remember translating captions once on a video from 2017, it’s a shame they had to shut it down all because some community caption makers who translated some videos on pewdiepie’s channel once tried use this feature to attack a UA-camr)
Info card polls
P.s. I’ve been on UA-cam since 2017, is that long enough
I miss the snake game
I have to keep my hands and part of my brain busy when watching stuff
Snake was perfect for that
thanks for burning my eyes with that full white backgroud, loved it
Dislike counter is THE most important feature on UA-cam.
it helps out small creators, and big ones too.
UA-cam removed it for false reason of "Mental health damage" which is only true for about .3% of total channels.
The snake game was so fun back then :(

Really loved this video, great work!
i'm still SO mad that community-contributed captions were removed. there was nothing wrong with the feature and the machine-generated captions haven't improved at all since then (if anything they've gotten worse)
FarCry3 Blood Dragon trailer had a VHS effect toggle button that was built in YT player. AFAIK it was the only video to receive such a function.
Love it! keep up the content!
You can tell that in the past 2-3 years youtube has seen tiktoks success and is trying desperately to be enough like them before they lose to them. Likes only, shorts, etc
I remember using most of these features back then (google+, annotations, info cards and the dislike button) and really? Low use? Only 0.2% of videos? I remember seeing these everywhere and I guarantee you everybody loved using these.
I genuinely believe -You- Tube isn't about you anymore. Especially after the removal of dislikes
It's more about adtube
@@Theawesomesonic what's adtube?
@@le9038 It's not a thing, It's more of a pun on UA-cam because everything about it is basically now ads

Finally , someone needed to make this video and who better for the job than you
video responses, star rating system, so much has been taken away from us on this site, with no end it sight
From 2015 - 2017, basically all of my videos were made using UA-cam Video Editor, I even had a huge project in the works that I never completed and is now most likely lost for good. It was a shame to see it removed, but at least it forced me to use alternatives.
I miss Channel Discussions too, it was quite nice, the Community Tab is definitely better tho.
Never even knew Info Polls died, quite a shame imo.
Annotations are honestly a huge shame to lose, since they could have been developed into mobile through several ways, like maybe annotations are added as cards on mobile on the time stamp.
Some features I miss in particular not featured here are channel backgrounds, the old logo, pinning channels to your sidebar, and the intro feature where you can add a small 3 second intro before your videos.
The only memory of Community Contributions was that Alan Becker vid “reacting to my fans’ captions”. I miss when it was UA-cam and not UsTube.
altough i could see the reason why the community caption was removed (a lot of trolls and ppl who use it a joke), the auto generated caption will never come close to the old CC system
I only ever saw a single video with troll community captions out of the hundreds of videos I probably watched with captions on
@@tomokihada8407 it's really on the bigger youtubers. Like for example pewdiepie's video at that time had the worst captions I saw. He even made a video about it himself, and turn it off himself. Also happened to Jackseptic Eye
The "FUCK JT" stuff.
ua-cam.com/video/HbF7cNFxE9g/v-deo.html
great outro music. thank you
not surprised that the Editor was removed... I was aware and even used it once or twice but that's all and I don't miss it
RANT:
Watching in Efficient codecs like VP09, AV01 and Opus would also be long gone for mobile users.
They are not available for android users including me. All I have is the AVC1/H.264 crap!
If I open youtube-dl theres almost always for the higher end (>1080p) videos those codecs available???
The people in charge of ruining the sub count should be fired
a few things I can think of that you didn't mention that I immediately thought of was there was a time when you could see every account that was currently watching a video, you could go to peoples channels page and see the videos they were watching, when you typed out a comment there was a button that would read it out to you , the channel pages were a lot more customizable you could have a background picture and change the colors of everything and before thumbs up and down there was a star system
Some of the latter things you mentioned were covered in part 1
Someday, UA-cam will disable comments because "we believe people should be more social in person. And cause of the negative comments on our latest rewind"
I still remember the christmas day UA-cam hack that made all the thumbnails on every video the same one as the video you were watching, plus the anime sheep character. I remember seeing it around 2pm that day and it was crazy to say the least. it took UA-cam nearly two days to fix that problem, and had no idea a youtube pooper hack UA-cam that christmas day. And yet when Emplemon made that video, I actually do remember coming across that and the Mei memorial channel that unfortunately got taken down and so fourth.
Not purposely against the grain, but I hated annotations
It looked more messy than helpful or fun and was very irritating while I'm watching a video in full screen or theater mode. I'm immersed in a video and boom: some stupid text shows up. Info cards are less intrusive and I notice them without them feeling like a nuisance. I don't understand why they removed polls from info cards; does it cost them money to keep a feature like that?
I miss video replies. Back in the day you could make a video reply to a video from another creator which would be linked below the original video. This was great for discussions, challenges and other community events.
Video Responses is what you're looking for, that one, along with Top comments, were fun to watch and see what happens. Man, websites back in the 2000s use to solely focus on the community itself, instead of the corporate people of the 2010s and 2020s.
The king returns
It's funny how because they shut down annotations, theres now a useless button in the video player WITH AN UPDATED ICON.
If I didn't enjoy this video there would be no way for me to express that other than comments that hardly anyone reads
Auto add videos from creators to a playlist based on a keyword, seems niche but handy if you follow a smp
Yes a sequel!
THANK YOU
One more removed youtube feature you missed is video attributions. You can still see the panel in the description of old videos but the links are all dead.
Annotations were terrible and everyone having interacted with "bad" usage of annotations, is probably very happy they no longer exist.
== Why? ==
You could add some sort of floating card on the video at custom times, with custom sizes... and custom colour. Great for covering up mistakes (typos, wrong info, etc). But it also meant that bad actors would cover half the screen with 1 transparent annotation, and the second half with another clear annotation. You couldn't pause the video by clicking with the mouse anymore, without opening a random link the uploader chose.
I remember dms
And discussions
And info card pools
And annotations
I've been watching UA-cam for a while and some of these changes still bother me
I used the discussion tab once to ask my viewers that weren't subscribed to, well, subscribed.
wow, great video!
Channel discussions was cool
this is legitimately sad, i wish youtube/google would take the effort to keep the features that people liked about their platform.
They’ve removed more and more features as the site became increasingly corporate.
Who remembers those creator pictures and shorts thingies the came before UA-cam added shorts
What about the feature to like and dislike ads?
F for the removed but needed features

Collections would be appreciated nowadays again
I miss info card polls a lot
I used the collections to have everything organized, since once subscribing to 100+ channels gets difficult to see what is going on, more so if you have variety from vlogs, music, gamplays, art, etc.
Now I use multiple accounts for different things :/
I remember the DMs i used to that with my friend
For Google on Android: if you type Bruce Wayne and click the light it will be a spotlight with the Batman logo and batman flies across.
(It was on trending and I clicked)
Remember when the UA-cam Shorts UI was good?
For the collections feateure I just installed a extention but I do not know if it is compatible for other devices apart from PC
Extention - Pocket Tube subscriber manager

9:49 I guess I have the collections feature now in mobile. It's kinda neat, I will try to find your twitter and @ you with a screenshot or something.
F for the Snaky
As of writing thisThe collections feature isn’t available on desktop however on mobile it is and will show up as the first thing on your subscription feed with a default one for favorite channels
they kinda brought back collections
That's why I use UA-cam venced for mobile.
ive used the video editor. was useful for beginners.

Who misses the youtube inbox?
I think I heard that they'll add collections back
I wouldn’t be surprise if UA-cam either supported extensions for a streaming’s and recording software like obs or came out with there own. Similarly and what my initial thought was, I wouldn’t be surprised if youtube came out with its own editor. However, I could see it underperforming.
I miss the 2018 UA-cam 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I rember the discussion tab, I would always look at the nice replies
At least you can view dislikes with browser extensions
what about the really old mobile app youtube capture
i have no idea about all this, because I started this channel months after this video was released
; ) ; ) ; )
I'll never forget 2012 when google bought UA-cam and slowly made your subscriptions less & less of a priority to one time straight up not appearing in your sub box that was moved to the side and lower on the page already
2012?? Dude, that was 2006 when Google Bought UA-cam, not 2012. 2012 was when they revamped that god awful channel page layout that I still find disgusting to this very day.
I still miss the youtube inbox y'all
Collections would be awesome for me. I have over 200 subscriptions
Big F 😔
The way part 2 is 4 yrs later-
@CHM Tech I think it is 15,000 total views, because that is around when I got it, and I have only 38 subscribers
