With the 22H2 update, this workaround was broken. If you kill the Network Flow it will just tell you the internet crashed and restart it and circles back to the same position. INSTEAD, from the command prompt, type *OOBE\BYPASSNRO* and hit Enter. It will appear to start the entire startup process over. @Linden Reaper ive tried using linux and i had it for a year or so. It just wasnt for me, not very user friendly. Sorry but windows is just much easier.
Those scenarios mentioned at about 4:30 actually happen a LOT in outback regions of Australia, where the only access to internet is via sattelite or low bandwidth adsl connection (where the exchange can be 30km away ... or more)
Being a former computer tech I always raised concerns when windows 8, 8.1 & 10 made it difficult to use without a MSA. It's sad to say but I just don't think they're going to listen without a legal organization drawing a line in the sand and yanking MS's head out of that same sand to see the line drawn.
if you've ever seen the TV chuck that was the final season plot. Basically dude had a cia/nsa mk ultra program installed to his brain that made him instantly good at everything. then the final season a "bill gates" type person made a "2.0" version of the system but gave out a free os to everyone in the world in order to collect all the data everywhere so he could "take over the world"

*There is a third way, the easiest way.* (works on the Pro edition, doesn't work on the Home edition) On the screen where you are being asked to choose "How would you like to set up this device?" you are given two options. Most people, since they are installing Windows on a consumer device, are going to go with the option to "Set up for personal use". That will bring up a screen asking you for the Microsoft Account credentials. But, by choosing the option to "Set up for work or school" and then choosing "Sign-in options" on the next screen you are now presented with the option to join a domain. Choose that one. It doesn't matter if the device you're installing Windows on doesn't belong to a corporate domain, it will work regardless. And, voila, the Microsoft Account is bypassed! *Like this comment so other people can see it.*
If you do the setup with ethernet plugged in until the "Let's add your Microsoft account", unplug ethernet, and hit the back arrow on the add account screen, it then prompts you to create a local account.
On update 22H2 as at today... instructions are slightly different. After ending the task as at 7:25...go back into command prompt and enter the command: OOBE\BYPASSNRO The system will reboot and this time you will get the option to continue without internet connection
Dear Microsoft: give us the option to purchase your software and then leave us alone, or to be free with ads. Don't force us to have to work around your nonsense.
@Clash Stats That means we as users should be totally fine with having every bit of our information down to our home location be sold without our permission simply for Microsoft's own benefit? I think not.
@Clash Stats You're arguing semantics. Most people know that they are getting a license to use the software, and even more would know full well that they are not buying the rights to the software itself. Regardless, the point of the comment you responded to still stands. If we buy the license, give us an option for no ads. If we don't wanna pay, give us a free option with ads. We shouldn't have to deal with this crap.
Companies are all about recurring revenue now. They no longer want to sell you something once and be done. They want that monthly/yearly subscription or ad revenue.
Glad that some big YT channels actually bring it up. I think there should be more videos like this. Honestly, it gets ridiculous because now you can't even use an alarm clock app without creating an account! And poping up messeges on a full screen telling you that they ARE collecting cookies isn't any better than just collecting them without you knowing.
Free Alarm Clock 4.0.1 doesn't need any weird crap in order to DL and then use. And I have used shutupwindows and winaerotweaker and ev3rything so there is no way that even if that program wants data, it aint getting any. But in its native state, I dont see that it has any mechanism for collecting data anyways, but I could be wrong...

Also take this alternative: Shift + F10, then type the following command: netsh wlan disconnect It will straight up disconnect the wireless device and you will be asked to create the local account
If you hold shift and press F10 at the spot where you select your Wi-Fi, it will bring up the command prompt, type OOBE\BYPASSNRO when you click enter the computer will restart, when you get back to the same place it should have a "I don't have internet" Option beside the NEXT Button.😉 This should work for everyone at the moment unless they patch it. I'm so sick of companies trying to keep their products after I shell out good money to buy them for myself. I'm done with all the always-on bullshit, these account tracking things (I've seen the same sudden pop-up of ads you mentioned several times), etc. Not buying any more, and going to jail-break everything I possibly can. If it dies in the process, then I'll go back to living without it. Because the alternative of just handing them more power pisses me off to no end.
I suggest using Linux, it sounds great for you. My advice would be to get a second drive to dual boot Windows and Linux (although some distros like Pop!_OS don't work nicely with dual-booting, distros like Linux Mint do) or get a second/old computer to try out Linux first to see if you like it. You may not like it at first, as getting used to it can take time, but it's really cool doing away with the ads/tracking shenanigans, even if you go with one of the more corporate distributions like Ubuntu.
Just use linux, you pay 0, you get the privacy you want, it is easier to get programs, you really own it even when it is free, no ads and only a few programs that are considered standard (even when they aren't) don't work, change ms office for only office, there are many options to replace photoshop, and they work in linux flawlessly or with minor bugs like not catching the dark mode or things like that, if you are really sick of them, well, you can actually have a system that does what you want

@@alenasenie6928 Linux is not a gaurentee of privacy. Every major browser has telemetry on by default, on linux as well. Ubuntu once tried to put ads in their start menu which is a major telemetry concern. So even linux distros and major software like browser can have telemetry in them. And if you are gaming you can bet there is a lot of telemetry on your computer even while not running the game because of launchers and whatnot.
Preach it Jay!! As a Windows user, since the early DOS boot days, I can verify your statements with certainty. Until we the consumer speak up and stand firm it will only get worse, eroding our autonomy. Appreciate your voice.
The only way to do that is to hurt their bottom line. Because now, even if you say stop, Microsoft still makes money off you. They literally have us by the throat. You have to make that tough decision and move away from Microsoft.
The problem is those who are savvy are a small minority. Those who will do something about it are an even smaller minority. MS doesn’t care about our protest, because if those who protested went away, they’d still be making huge profit margins
@@classicrockonly the problem is that this so called “minority” does not really bring much money in as they tend to be a bit more techy savy so they will shop around or find works arounds. As long as most of us click “Yes Yes, £50”, the minority will never have any impact. Sad but true.
@@classicrockonly Sadly the truth here, just look at how many Apple Iphone users there are vs the android phones. Though a lot of android phones are tracking all your stuff as well these days. And the saddest part is that a lot of people even fully embrace this, just because one account ease of use and everything they have is centralized and synced over all their devices. However there are a few laws here in the EU at least (GDPR recent example) that try to tackle at least privacy concerns, but they are sadly pretty hard to enforce as long as there are geographical locations these do not apply to. As going after them is nearly impossible and blocking the internet never goes well. As an example for instance there is a part of the that GDPR is the annoying popup for cookie usage on websites, which also according to the GDPR need an easy option to disable all of the cookies and it should even be defaulted to disabled. But how many sites follow that? They just make that popup as annoying as possible to agitate people in the hope they will speak up against these laws.

For Windows 11, we're going to have even less control over disabling telemetry through what's provided by Microsoft and will have to resort to community-provided fixes and workarounds. And that changes at every damn build of both Win 10 and 11, just like you stated. Microsoft is in the business of big data, not end-user software as that's just a tool to collect the data.
Removing telemetry removes nothing. There are deep forensic subsystems that keep track of everything. The only way to get rid of the telemetry and deeper aspects of data collection is to remove Windows entirely and use a different OS. Linux or Unix based.

@@user-jm8sy5ox2j You actually don’t **need** Pro to make a local domain account, but it’s an obscure workaround that’ll probably eventually be patched with what Al 6r is talking about. This is before getting into the fact that there are services you can pay for information, such as the address where a person lives, which has already been recorded to have been abused by people - such as abusive ex's to find their partner that left them. I appreciate that this is a varied and nuanced topic with a wide variety of outcomes but to put it bluntly, if I wanted it could buy a large amount of geolocation data for phones, figure out which phones visit specific locations such as a primary school. I could then go through the movements of each phone to figure out when one is alone and decide to go see who it belongs to when its most likely to be by itself Yes this is an extreme example but my point is, it shouldn't be possible in the first place for me or anyone else to do all that. If I went out of my way to follow you, I would be a stalker, I don't know why we excuse the same behaviour from a company. Edit - Your absolutely right that people shouldn't just be pushing back against just Microsoft for adopting this practice and should call out other company's for it. I still can't believe Microsoft is pushing this crap, especially with Windows 11 pro\ent.
Many organisations use AzureAD & Autopilot. The computer is joined to the company at the moment it's purchased. It gets shipped direct to the end user, they log in with their (work) credentials and all the required apps & settings are deployed automatically. No need for an MS account with that method. No need for the services you currently perform either, unfortunately.
The Pro version currently allows a local account, and I'd hope at "multiple different *companies*" you're not using the Home version. I'm sure you're using unattend.xml, the OOBE can skip past even asking about an MS account. There's been some rumors about them making Pro require an MS account, not sure how far that will get.
What I do is connect to the network, then you get to the screen where you have to create an account. Unplug the ethernet cable, restart the PC. Now when you get back to the setup, there will be an option to create an offline account. Do that, plug back in the ethernet cable, job done :)
You know, I really love those practical videos that are not just about hardware but about what users can do - just like this helps me a lot. As well as the Fan Control video - great!
There is another way by opening command prompt(shift + f10) and type oobe\bypassnro and then it'll reboot and then you have a option to create an local account
I can say that the first workaround has been in place since the release of Win11. Used to work in a computer repair shop and, when it came out, our lead techs scoured through forums and the system settings/command prompt/task manager to find workarounds, and within a week of release, we had mainstreamed this process. It's incredibly effective and saves massive headaches.
@@smartassist9700 Use an older version. Or just let Office log into a MS account while you use a local account in Windows. I have set up lots of Windows PCs this way.
@@smartassist9700 Sadly I'm not aware of any methods to circumvent the need for an account for MS Office. At that point, I'd recommend Libre Office or Google Docs, however there may be some compatibility issues when sending docs to MS Office users, plus there may be other features that you'd need. You might be able to find a cracked copy of Office, though this may cause issues when Windows tries to update the program (which it will inevitably force an update because MS doesn't care about your wants).
Thank you for this!! And glad that big YT channels bought this up! I am forced to use my Microsoft account since it didn’t give me an option to create a local account. Microsoft should have this as an option as well and not being forced to and digging through various menus just to create one.
I just had to look this up the other day. I'm like you: I hate tying my OS to an online account, especially for my primary admin account! Thank you for sharing this with the world so others have a reliable source to do this! Doing God's work, as always, Jay!

On the education and enterprise versions there is an option to bypass the Microsoft account requirement and just login locally it's called connecting to a domain and the funny thing is you actually don't have to connect to a domain. You can just leave it as a local account forever. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't sell those versions to the public the most sold to corporate and colleges.
To tie into the ad conversation, I have a crazy story. I was talking to a coworker about a product, in a roundabout way without ever saying the name and he did the same, just chatting for about 5 minutes. Not a minute later do I go to open Amazon and the product was on the front page. The exact one. How it extrapolates data to pull that from nondirect information is INSANE.
In the past I was about to start commenting in favor of linux for freedom or such. But today I predict that all these "software as a service" schemes will naturally push more and more people to linux since it is becoming a problem that majority of commercial software is slowly transitioning to this "service" schemes either by spying on you, serving ads or monthly subscriptions. Linux will remain the only island where traditional "install and use forever" software will remain. Maybe with less features or clunky as linux can be, but still last way of keeping control over your PC and data.
Linux is like avalanche, once enough people jump on it then it will start to get more support, get better even faster, and thus the avalanche effect. Proprietary software companies like Microsoft have done active trashing of Linux for a long time, and thus the myth of toxic Linux community prevails. When it's one of the best communities out there, as every single new user benefits the whole community and thus people are really helpful. Obviously in any group of millions of people there are the rotten apples, but the amount of those people is tiny AF and irrelevant.
valve has kinda of thrown their hat in the ring with their linux based steam os.. gabe has said before hes concerned of Microsofts control of the pc OS market.. people are incredibly naïve if they think the spying is/will be limited to advertising.. i guarantee you that there is already a quasi social credit score system in operation behind the scenes.. its only a matter of time before Microsoft join the rest of big tech in censorship and de-platforming
@@awakeandwatching953 Don't assume conspiracy where incompetence, laziness or corporate greed provides a better explanation ;). Just like when I start talking about kids topics close to my phone I will soon get ads for baby cradles, I would more expect that Russians are simply buying from google and Microsoft some sketchy ad keywords using credit card online (e.g. no shady deals in car garage in middle of the night) and then serve you ads for extreme left and extreme right sites in order to spread polarization in society where social unity is detrimental to their plans. Hidden "credit" score system would require competent people, and and as such unlikely ;) Besides, we already have a working social credit score system in a form of every HR department checking your social media profile before interview to check if you are not a complete jackass posting drunk pictures with pants down every weekend or talking nonsense about microchips in vaccines in posts. Good enough. EDIT: Yeah, your "quasi social credit score" system triggered my anti-conspiracy button here.
I was so pissed when I was setting up my new laptop and saw they'd tried to force the Microsoft account, so much that I straight up might have returned the thing if there was no way around it. I genuinely hate it here lol, I had the same experience where I was just TALKING to someone about where to eat one evening and then literally minutes later opened youtube and was getting ads for restaurants. This needs to be illegal somehow but the companies behind it are way too powerful for any politician to be willing to stand up to them.
I'm an employee at a custom pc building shop and we've been killing the task since it came out, I really hope they dont change it, it would suck if we had to put in fake information, and users, or us have to change it later
Okay question, given that you are now a local account user, but lets say you need/want to download an app (or even Switch to windows 11 from the S mode version) from the windows store, would connecting to it defeat the whole perpose of doing that entire process just to get a local user account or it wouldn't affect it at all?
Just wanted to thank you again for this Jay. I'm trying to get Win10 installed on a new laptop that came with Win11 and, for me, it's easier to get into the OS to use the reinstall options. Saved me a lot of hassle here - I'm not interested in trying Win11 yet. Rock on!

@D Reaper "But, I can not play X games or run Y programs on Linux". Even in the video is already said the reason Linux is not solution is due to Linux has its own problems. Might as well run Steam OS here.
Jay one of the most popular videos that we like to see here in Silicon Valley is how to declutter Windows after it is installed and get rid of all the crap that we really don't need I don't know whether you've done one like that recently but if you haven't that would be good to know for Windows 10 and 11 how to get rid of all the Superfluous software.
As a full-time Linux user I'd love to hear that as well :D I've recently upgraded my GPU from RX580 to RX6800XT and Linux just worked after reboot. I installed an extra AMD driver for raytracing (vulkan-amdgpu-pro) and I could play Quake II RTX without even rebooting. On Windows I spent 30 minutes updating drivers and rebooting like 3 times before I could do the same thing. Sometimes things are easier on Linux. Sometimes they are not. Hibernation likes to stop working from time to time. Though Windows crashes when I suspend it, so I have to hibernate it instead. BTW: I have Windows only because Adobe won't let me activate Substance Painter on Linux with a CC subscription, and I need that for work. I could get a one-time license on Steam and use that, but my employer already got me a CC license. At least I can compare how things work between Linux and Windows I guess.
@@unfa00 didn't expect to see you here but that's awesome, i remember I was genuinely dumbfounded when I first installed manjaro and my graphics drivers just worked out of the box. I was so used to having to install them manually it really threw me a loop
Thank you very much for making this video! In my opinion it's not so much about this specific "trick" but more about the general message: Microsoft (and others) are collecting as much data as possible - people need to be aware of that!
As of the ISO available in November 2022, the Network Connection Flow fix from this video does not work for Windows 11 Pro. What does still work is the following: Continue through the install, but at the user entry screen press Shift+F10, type "oobe\bypassnro" without spaces or quotes, then before Windows finishes the restart, unplug the ethernet cable. (Sorry if duplicate post.)
I work in pro audio and as much as I like the experience of Linux Mint/Cinnamon, it's completely unusable if you use any amount of 3rd party plugins, and running shit through WINE adds so much latency that its again unusable. So I'm pretty much stuck on Windows because of this because I'm not gonna give my money to Apple. They spy on you just as much but with even less control over your devices. Its a damn shame really.
@@sebastiaanstoffels7565 Not if you actually have to do specific work like working with Adobe products, dealing with audio productions, etc. Besides Blender there are zero programs that I use on a daily basis that are properly supported natively on Linux. Hopefully that will change with stuff like Proton translating over Windows applications to run properly on Linux, but it will likely take years before the tech is mature enough to be a reliable replacement for running everything on a Windows installed computer.
The easiest way to increase Linux adoption is to have a friend help you install/configure it. Most home/office user use the same software over and over. I've installed Linux for the non tech savvy and some are none the wiser. Sure the windows look a bit different but surfing the web is still the same. Linux is more secure than windows, but software compatibility means it won't be for everyone. I believe setting up a Linux community to include local 'Linux helpers' is what would improve Linux adoption. Schools extra activities would make an ideal place to perform Linux projects, but then schools are already overburdened. IMO Microsoft has lost the plot since windows 7, people are just waiting on the support for the alternatives to materialise.
I have Win 11 on my laptop. I got it after upgrading from 10. I'm sorry I did that. I won't make that mistake again. I know lots of people who don't always have internet access as I live in a fairly remote area in a more northern region of Canada. A person can do a lot of things on a PC without having to go online. I hate what Microsoft has been doing to our PCs lately. It certainly isn't to benefit the user. Yes, Linux has problems too, but not nearly anything like this.

This is NUTS! when I built my system just a few months ago with Windows 11, there was actually a No Internet option and I was able to follow the old video to the letter. It’s wild that Microsoft made it harder to do in just that short amount of time
Wow, it took you thirteen minutes to present solution that could be explained in less than one minute. That takes a special kind of talent. Thank you for the info.
Windows 10 is definitely going to be the last version of windows that I use as my main OS unless Microsoft has a major change in direction for their approach on things like privacy and advertising. Linux is such a pain to use as a daily OS but I value my privacy enough that I've already started the transition to Linux
@halo X1 my mom(usually) and me (sometimes) when i need to troubleshoot(her system) use Raspberry OS(rasp 4), and well, its not hard, the only downside are games(duh, its a raspberry 4 its not a lot of power there) but , its really no impediment to not use it.
@Genko That's majorly the problem, each distro works differently and no single distro does everything that every distro does. That's why Linux will never be at the top of the market share.
@@derangedtaco3491 all Debian distros work the same, all Arch distros work the same (excluding the travesty that is Manjaro because it's not in the spirit of Arch), etc. Your experience is only going to be marginally different based on how the devs designed things.
i hear you jay, i used to install tens of laptops and desktops a day myself with windows 10 and macOS and i HATED to have to ask their account info just to install their machines, this includes setting up email and everything. personally i just want to setup their machine, make it ready to use and let them put in the final credentials to start using them, no need to add risk to personal data being lost. i'm still camping on windows 10 but when the time comes i'm going to manjaro or even arch linux, i rather have a clean start than having to use windows 11.
I’ve got manjaro on a separate SSD that I swap out when I get tired of Windows10, the problem I’ve run into is trying to play multiplayer games like space engineer and the like. Those games are built around .NET infrastructure and even tho I’ve installed every fix under the sun, it just doesn’t work. Maybe I’ll just swap over permanently and keep a VM of windows 7 to play those games, idk. But yeah arch or Manjaro has been my step away from the Windows ecosystem for personal use.
Been running Linux for a year and a half now. So far, in my case, it does everything better with the exception of gaming and video playback in any browser. Would recommend.
Thank you, Jay. I've been building home PCs for decades, and this "feature" in Win11 has got to be the most frustrating they've ever come up with. My friends in the Peten jungle are totally going to need this process.

Awesome work around. One thing I noticed when I fresh installed Windows 11 on a new laptop was that it completely skipped the MS account login screen when it didn’t recognize any network drivers installed. So it was a similar situation as ending that task.
Moved off to Linux a number of years ago, now. I still keep a Windows 7 installation around for the few games I like that just don't word well on Linux. But these days, unless it is really special, the only games I will buy run on Linux natively, or Linux/Steam/Proton. It is surprising how many good (Windows) games can be made to run on Linux. Sometimes they run better. In fact, I almost never boot into Win7 anymore. And I don't have to deal with any of the BS that Jay is showing in this video.
Yep! I nuked my Windows partition when Valve launch Proton. I don't need Windows for games anymore. All of the fear-mongering bullshit about how "Linux is teh hurd cuz of terminulz!" is ignorance and people who get their dick in a twist because it doesn't do thing the Windows way. WTF is wrong with these people? The whole fucking point of Linux is that it's NOT Windows! They were willing to learn Windows, so grow a pair and learn Linux! It's not a that fucking hard. Just don't follow what some random seedy websites says to do. It's probably out of date. Ask people who use it!
My house is in a rural area next to a fairly fast road, so people crash into the telephone poles quite often (about 2-3 times a year) and I met with my cousin and he had windows 11 and I found it so strange how they had to be connected to the Internet just to load their account already on the drive. Its just unnecessary
Wish I had run into this a week or so ago. I had to get a new computer and needed to be online to download a Linux distro before reformatting and setting up an OS that I actually wanted to use. To get there I had to go through the furiously infuriating process of both using an online MSFT account and CREATING one before actually using the damned computer. Hideous.
This is so true. When I setup my W11, it would only show the first 5 letters of my username in powershell and the user folder in C drive which was so annoying. And the tight integration with Onedrive is horrible. I was unable to change the default folder location of Documents and Pictures folders. I had to run a third party script to fix that. W11 absolutely sucks
Thanks for the warning. I always pick my own folder locations for those, so i'll make a big turn around W11. The new rightclick alone sucks enough for me not to use it.
I bought an acer predator prebuild, it came with a lot of preinstalled bloatware and there was one acer program that made a popup ad appear on my desktop for some crappy game, it behaved like a notification and appeared on top of whatever i had open, i was furious, it even made a loud notification system noise, absolutely disgusting, luckily you can uninstall the program but still, it was gross, i still feel mad thinking about it

Off topic, I know. But, if you're having trouble updating to Windows version 22H2 or Win11, its probably because you have a SSD and a HDD together in your system. Assuming the SDD contains your OS (and it should), simply shut down, disconnect the HDD (you don't have to physically remove it) and restart your system. Start the update process and it should successfully complete. For some reason, the HDD was preventing Windows from completing the reboot phase of the update process. The system would just restart without finishing the install. There is no information about this problem posted on Microsoft's webpage or any of the relevant forums. I found the solution purely by accident because I thought the issue lived in the boot sequence in BIOS. My system successfully updated to the previous version of Windows when the only drive was the SDD. So, naturally, the first thing I tried was disconnecting the HDD. If you are having this problem and this solution worked for you, copy and paste it so others may know about it. Thanks.
My home pc has been stuck on 1909 forever. As it turns out, it wasn't the fact that I had an SSD as the boot drive with 3 old spinning disks for data storage -- it was that I stupidly never addressed an issue with my bios settings - if my computer reboots, it was prompting to boot off the network - I ignored it and just hit F1 and selected my boot drive. I can't believe I never put 2 and 2 together. But your post made me think about the issue. Thanks.

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. My son is handicapped and so relies on me (technically challenged) to set up his computers. I recently purchased him a new computer system but could not get past the Microsoft Account option. My son does not have a cell phone or e-mail address so I was trying to use my information. Nothing worked as it kept rejecting the inputs which obviously defaulted back to me. The SHIFT+ F10 workaround worked just great. I can 't thank you enough!
Also for anyone wondering there is an easier way, IF you can, when it asks for your network plug in your ethernet cord. It’ll update and say “Checking for updates” at this point instantly disconnect your ethernet cord and it will let you bypass it. Without the command prompt or anything else. Leaving this here for whoever gets nervous with the command prompt.
I used to be a huge Windows fan. Got full boxed retail copies of Windows at their highest editions from XP all the way to 8.1. The direction Windows has been going though since 10 has become utterly fucking unacceptable and I have since divorced myself from the Windows line and now use pretty much exclusively 8.1 Professional and legacy Windows versions along with MX Linux.
Windows 11 Pro has another workaround for this - when you're going through the setup choose the "domain join" option and it will immediately let you create a local account. Obviously this doesn't work for the Home edition, but still nice to know.
If you're building a PC for someone and you need to set it up for them, use Windows Audit Mode. There's a shortcut (CTRL+SHIFT+F3 at setup) and it allows you to bypass all setup for temporary access to the OS.
What is interesting is I think it used to be an option to make a local account on setup. I recently bought a new laptop, it had Windows 11, and it tried to force me to do the stupid MS Account login. Later that day I had to exchange it for another model due to reasons. "New" laptop still had Windows 11, but didn't ask for a MS Account login on setup, just went straight to Local Account. Let me skip the network connection too. I get the feeling it was an older build on the second laptop.

*There is a third way, the easiest way.*
(works on the Pro edition, doesn't work on the Home edition)
On the screen where you are being asked to choose "How would you like to set up this device?" you are given two options.

What's the difference seen in Home vs Work/School account?
If you do the setup with ethernet plugged in until the "Let's add your Microsoft account", unplug ethernet, and hit the back arrow on the add account screen, it then prompts you to create a local account.
Thanks for the tip, that worked for me! 🙀🙀🙀
Great trick, saves me from Microsoft’s nonsense :)
That's how I did it on the last few builds I installed Windows 11 on. I'm still on Windows 10 for my personal PC's.
I was about to comment about this method. I used to work in the RMA department at an SI and have been using this trick since Win10.
The problem is, if you want to use MS Office it makes you sign in because it's subscription based, which in turn signs in Windows 11...
On update 22H2 as at today... instructions are slightly different. After ending the task as at 7:25...go back into command prompt and enter the command: OOBE\BYPASSNRO

All this shit.. just do Linux..
Dear Microsoft: give us the option to purchase your software and then leave us alone, or to be free with ads. Don't force us to have to work around your nonsense.
I agree
@Clash Stats That means we as users should be totally fine with having every bit of our information down to our home location be sold without our permission simply for Microsoft's own benefit? I think not.
they dont want perpetual license,
they want *perpetual* periodical charges with strings attatched

Unfortunately a majority of that small group (I know… hehehe) can’t afford too much anyway so they overall don’t matter to Microsoft.
3:36 The problem is the law. In the US we conflate free-market economics with anarcho-capitalism, so we let the corporations do anything at all no matter the consequences. Yup, good video! For Windows 10 I run my own PowerShell script to remove/disable telemetry during my deployments for work (MDT still works great).

I could then go through the movements of each phone to figure out when one is alone and decide to go see who it belongs to when its most likely to be by itself
Yes this is an extreme example but my point is, it shouldn't be possible in the first place for me or anyone else to do all that. If I went out of my way to follow you, I would be a stalker, I don't know why we excuse the same behaviour from a company.

paused at 4:24 here, to say, there is a way to prepare a system even if you dont have the microsoft account, you press ctrl+shift+f3 after boot windows on that screen where it asks you the country, the account you want to use and stuff, and will restart in audit mode with the local administrator account to let you pre-install all the software, drivers and stuff, and when you finish, you use sysprep.exe (that will auto open everytime you reboots in that mode) to prepare and shutdown the machine, so when the real owner of the machine first turns it on, will ask for their credentials and they can do the process of a new out-of-the-box machine as if you had bought from dell or anything.
i do that if i need to prepare a machine for a friend.
I just had this problem yesterday when installing an SSD in a co-worker's personal laptop. While installing Win10 in the SSD I made the mistake of connecting to Wi-Fi and then it required an MS account and wouldn't allow creating a local account, there was absolutely no way to skip it (I suppose I could've disabled Wi-Fi and that would've been it). I logged in with my account, did what I had to do, then created a local account and deleted my MS account - which worked, but it is definitely not cool. I did confirm my user folder was successfully deleted, so I hope that was the end of it.
Yeah, the way to go then would have been to disable wifi after the updates had completed
You should go check what your microsoft account says online. Because it just might list the machine still under your account. I know that from having to check something online and finding I had more PCs/serial keys listed under my account than I should have..

As a sys admin, one of the reasons network is checked/verified prior to account creation is to see if the device is present within any organizations Azure AD and Intune (MEM). If so, Autopilot can be used to provision the device to a company MDM, install apps, hybrid join to local AD, etc. Its an easy way to have an IT department order a laptop ahipped directly to a users home, as opposed to having IT image the machine in house.
I ended up just giving up and using my account because they make it so damn difficult to use a local account. It kept switching me over to being defined by my university sign in and I just gave up and attempted to registry hack my way out of as much telemetry as possible. Sucks that some people have no choice because their employer (research stipends for me ig) are entirely dependent on the windows ecosystem and said ecosystem doesn’t care about the agency of the individual users

I can't believe, that there is no backlash from big corporations on all of those issues. But maybe there are some deals involved. Who knows.
Many organisations use AzureAD & Autopilot.
The computer is joined to the company at the moment it's purchased. It gets shipped direct to the end user, they log in with their (work) credentials and all the required apps & settings are deployed automatically.
No need for an MS account with that method.
No need for the services you currently perform either, unfortunately.
enterprise will have the options to turn off telemetry and online accounts. Its just the pro version that will be locked like home version.
As a sys admin, we deploy devices joined to active directory. No MS accounts required.

And thanks to Valve, that might happen sooner.

As a full-time Linux user I'd love to hear that as well :D
I've recently upgraded my GPU from RX580 to RX6800XT and Linux just worked after reboot.
I work in pro audio and as much as I like the experience of Linux Mint/Cinnamon, it's completely unusable if you use any amount of 3rd party plugins, and running shit through WINE adds so much latency that its again unusable. The easiest way to increase Linux adoption is to have a friend help you install/configure it. Most home/office user use the same software over and over. I've installed Linux for the non tech savvy and some are none the wiser. Sure the windows look a bit different but surfing the web is still the same. @@dude3961 Had the same issue with f10 not opening the command prompt...what I did was to plug in an extra usb keyboard I have here (with no shortcut set) ...then it worked.
Nice video. Another scenario to consider is upgrades or new laptops for what I will call senior citizen users who are not comfortable with messing with their computers. I have to get a new machine for a lady in her 70's and she wants using the new one to be exactly the same as the old one - old one runs Windows 8.1. Looks like W11 will cause instant panic!
11:10 my cousin and I were driving to a restaurant and we were talking about how your phone listens to your conversations and serves you ads, she picked up her phone and yelled "BIG BAGS OF MONEY!" at it as a joke, we get to the restaurant, she checks her phone for something and there were ads for bags of fake cash and coins. That shit takes less than 5 minutes and it happens on iPhones and Android phones
Thanks.
Had this issue. Same solution, Thumbs up! 👍
It's funny how often you get rebooting bugs because you have a secondary hard drive connected, or more often, a USB stick !
Thanks.
@@VirtualLunacy Awesome! Glad it worked out for you! I assume you were able to successfully update your system?
For the love of God, this was a blessing.
I thought there was no way to bypass this, Thank you.
Also, don't forget to use Winaero Tweaker to disable telemetry and data collection. And its also good for modifying your windows the way you like it.
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks Jay. I'm avoiding the win11 dumpsterfire for as long as I can, but this was super helpful as it starts the cogs a-turning for when I do eventually switch
Any chance you could be convinced to switch to Linux?
@@anon_y_mousse I thought the same, glad you've replied. I'm surprised how good Linux actually works, with games and all the other stuff I usually did on Win10...
@@BruceCarbonLakeriver What distro do you use?
@@anon_y_mousse Garuda Linux which is arch based.
@@BruceCarbonLakeriver Neat, I don't often hear of people using that. I use Slackware.
My main go to, but for laptops without* an Ethernet port, I’ll use jays method
@@Bluejay575 Which is perfectly fair, I have an Ethernet-to-USB adapter which makes it simple either way.
Excellent! Huge props to you for this. I knew there was a work around this helps tremendously as a builder.
Thanks for voicing this out for literally all of us (Windows Users that are not happy with what they do with the consumer's data).
2023 Update - type OOBE\BYPASSNRO instead of taskmgr (Letter O not the number 0)
Thanks for this man, appreciate it!
Windows 11 Pro has another workaround for this - when you're going through the setup choose the "domain join" option and it will immediately let you create a local account.
Obviously this doesn't work for the Home edition, but still nice to know.
Yep, i use that workaround installing windows 11 pro.
If you're building a PC for someone and you need to set it up for them, use Windows Audit Mode. There's a shortcut (CTRL+SHIFT+F3 at setup) and it allows you to bypass all setup for temporary access to the OS.
CTRL+SHIFT+F3 at OOBE screen (when it prompts for account login)
@@MattStrople thanks mate
What is interesting is I think it used to be an option to make a local account on setup.
I recently bought a new laptop, it had Windows 11, and it tried to force me to do the stupid MS Account login. Later that day I had to exchange it for another model due to reasons. "New" laptop still had Windows 11, but didn't ask for a MS Account login on setup, just went straight to Local Account. Let me skip the network connection too. I get the feeling it was an older build on the second laptop.
Have a local account on my laptop. But was receiving UA-cam recommendations based on the discussions I had at home! People called me paranoid. But after I turned off the microphone in Device Manager, it stopped. Unfortunately I have to use ZOOM meetings for job, and I turn the microphone for them, then I sometimes get UA-cam recommendations based on what I said during the meetings.
Curious if you tried turning off UA-cam personalized ads then see what happened after using your mic again.
Thanks Microsoft.
