Thanks Brian! This has always (with our last Toyota) been a concern of mine... I used to have to immediately lock the doors from the console on the door whenever parking my car away from home. :)
Hi Brian, great vid again with options…since Toyota has upgraded their info system maybe a 30 minute overview on all the various shortcuts and tips might be next up… appreciate your time
Good info. I never noticed that doors unlock in P! One time I was picking up my daughter at train station. I had my husbands suv. All of a sudden a guy hopped into passenger seat. Then stopped, we looked at each other, I don’t know who was more shocked. It was comical. With a quick apology he jumped out as quick as he could!
One time I parked in a different spot than I normally did because a duplicate car was parked there. I got in their car sat down looked at their drink in the cup holder like uh I realized and then got out lol
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I have a 2019 RAV4 and I just did it today!!! I never really liked the doors opening once the car was placed in park. I was telling my husband there had to be a way that this could be modified. I just didn’t feel like looking in the manual at the time. Because we also have a 1999 Toyota RAV4, and time we put the key in the ignition and turn all of the doors automatically lock and I was thinking hey if this is a 1999 Toyota and it has this feature the 2019 should be able to do the same thing or have a better feature than the factory default of going into park and then all of the doors unlocking once again thank you so much for taking time out to make this video for people like me who didn’t feel like investigating the manual
Great public notice video. I was aware on how to change the settings for over a decade but good info for those who do not know. I never liked the factory Auto Unlock setup. The Auto Unlock when shifting to park is really only suited for taxi/Uber drivers. That is really the only situation where you would want all your doors to unlock automatically to give easy access to strangers. Really even then it is still preferable to manually control and just push the unlock button. I also dislike the factory auto Parking brake engagement when shifting to park. Turning that off is as simple as holding the button down until auto engagement is disabled. No need to engage the parking brake every time you shift into park. It will just wear out the engagement actuator faster. I’d prefer to have control of when I engage parking brake as well. With that said it is also worth noting that the door locks themselves have a little actuator motor themselves on each handle. I have had to replace a couple of these on my old Prius because they do eventually wear out with excessive use. They can easily cost well over $100 each to replace and thats if you DIY. Pay someone else to do it and you could spend hundreds to a thousand dollars just so your power door locks work again. This usually only becomes an issue on cars over a decade old that have had heavy use. Having the locks engage and auto disengage every time especially if you don’t really need them to is a waste it wears them out faster. This is something you don’t think about until they stop working.
Every safety system has its drawbacks, resulting in more repairs to vehicles that did not need to be done in the past. Lot more use here on the door and lock actuators for starters. I can also see those locks not working if a fuse blows or if the car is on fire with no power available whatsoever, how then do you get out?
@@jayjaynella4539 the door locks still work even if the actuator motor fails. They just are no longer automatic and powered. Can still manually open from inside by moving switch or pulling handle. Gets really irritating though when your door(s) no longer automatically unlock with Smartkey or fob unlock button. At that point you need to manually unlock with key and make sure all doors are locked the old fashioned way when leaving the car. Not a safety issue just really irritating. On a side note when they do begin to fail they usually do so slowly as in they will intermittently work for weeks or months until they finally give up the ghost.
Thank you Brian for sharing your video. I need to save this video and do it in my car. I was wondering this before if the new features had this to lock the door even though your parking. And again thank you so much for sharing your video.
Cool feature, probably would have it lock in drive and unlock in park, but i have a question, what if you are in neutral or reverse, does the setting change anything for those?
Older Toyota vehicles(at least back to 2004) have this same feature. But you may have to set it up, yourself. There are 3 options I believe. The manual tells you how to do it, with a key turn sequence. If you disconnect the battery, you may have to redo it.
My 2023 Highlander Hybrid Bronze Edition doesn't use car play. But then again, I'm not using an iPhone. And I'm not plugging my phone into the USB jack on the dash. I guess if I activate it Android auto, maybe my screen would look like that.
My 2000 Saturn LS1 was ahead of its time. It would automatically lock all the doors as soon as you moved it out of park and it wouldn't unlock when you put it into park. You had to literally unlock it yourself.
It's crazy thus posted because this was bothering me about my 21 Camry SE. This was so helpful, I just went to my car and reset the door locks. Thanks😊
This is a great tip, I found that out while looking around in our RAV4 when I used to drive it. Someone could take advantage of others who don't know about this feature too well. Unfortunately my new Toyota we got this year doesn't have that feature which I wish it did have :(.
My 2005 Camry locks when I turn on the ignition and stays locked until I unlocked the doors manually. No infotainment system is necessary. That’s really smart without the additional cost and waste of time.

Great security tip on making sure doors lock when you go into drive. I knew two different people who had someone rush them at a stop light to open the door. One had his doors locked and got away, the other person did not and was dragged from his car and robbed. He is okay but having doors locked for security is so important.

@Robert Pulliam ... Toronto Canada. As someone who's been in rescue for dogs, seriously please consider leaving your dog at home, if you cannot take them in with you. Dogs die in cars, their organs shut down 20-30 minutes. Regardless of a/c, people steal cars/dogs and want serious rewards in order not to harm a pet. It is terrisum on another front. Note that the sun is still beating through those windows onto your pet. As well many places now have a serious fine if a pet is left in a vehicle. People have been known to call police and smash windows to get a dog out of a car. Please reconsider leaving your pets in a car as they are really stressed being left there.🙏

If i hold handle fro 3 seconds unlock all door. I don't understand what is happen why is car doesn't recognize smart keys like before
Not all new toyota has this lock/unlock from/to park option in tbe world . What you showed us is very helpful but i think it's only in North america. Did you know that every option added to a new Toyota for car dealers is an additional cost passed on to the customers. On my infotainment, the only option I have is to unlock all doors at once or only the passenger door when I press the unlock button on my remote control.
Thanks very much Brian. Always enjoy security tips for my 2023 toyota rav4 hybrid xle premium. Would you please consider doing a short video on installing license plate on the front of the rav4. I had the dealership intall the plate holder on the front but when I went to screw the plate into the holes on the holder, I could only screw it in less than 1/4 inch. Is this the way it is suppose to be? or am I suppose to continue screwing it thru the bumper (which just doesn't seem right). Thanks for your help with this and thanks for all your videos.
Thank you. You should use screws with a depth of an inch max. At an inch, they shouldn’t go through the bumper. You may want to compare your front end play holder with other new RAV4s to see if your salesperson installed the correct one.
I set my 2016 Prius on auto lock with speed and manual unlock. If I’m recalling correctly, Toyota got sued for the Auto Unlock when a female tried running away from some creeper guy and when she put her car in park the doors unlocked and the guy got in.
I have an older Lexus which doesnt have the screen . I never liked that feature I used tech stream to set it up so that when I unlock my doors it only unlocks the drivers door ( I am mostly alone) and also when I put my car into park only my drivers doors unlocks which I should change, normally you door will unlock when the door handle inside so no real point in having it auto unlock when I put the car in park lol
Thanks for sharing! I have a question, i was driving some passengers around recently and noticed that the rear doors don't unlock when they pull on the door handle (I made sure the child lock switch off).
You’re welcome. That’s normal. The front doors will bypass the lock but the back doors you have to physically unlock the car and then open the doors. I believe this is just an extra step added on the off chance a parent/guardian forgot the engage the child locks and the kid is yanking at the handle. Adds a little protection.

Our dog goes with us wherever we go he has been very upset over the last year and a half due to moves from TN to FL and back to TN. If we try to leave him at home he barks constantly.
My 2012 Acura tsx does that, but it's nice to have that standard on all cars
My car does this.
Cool I just bought one chr in Italy but doesn't have this feature 😢
@brianruperti how about 2023 Rav4 xle hybrid button tour... please
ua-cam.com/video/ZUpPwabHh58/v-deo.html
@@brianruperti thanks - but it doesn't cover the hybrid controls
Ah sorry I didn’t see the hybrid you wrote. Will do soon!
Great Video on doors locking when Park.
Much appreciated
Thanks for watching
I just purchased a new Rav4 today. May need your assistance with all the set up features. Thanks for the video!
Hi Brian, I have 2021 Toyota Highlander, and I would like to ask you for some help
My Alarm at car when off in garage last night when nobody is around the car and next morning when I walk to car wit smart key car doesn't unlock like before . If i hold handle fro 3 seconds unlock all door. I don't understand what is happen why is car doesn't recognize smart keys like before
Hey there I’m sorry I’m
Not sure why your car is doing that
Not all new toyota has this lock/unlock from/to park option in tbe world . What you showed us is very helpful but i think it's only in North america. Did you know that every option added to a new Toyota for car dealers is an additional cost passed on to the customers. On my infotainment, the only option I have is to unlock all doors at once or only the passenger door when I press the unlock button on my remote control.
Do Nissan cars have this feature?
Waiting for Nissan owners to tell us 🧐
Thanks very much Brian.
Not sure but if you can find it please let us know
What is this model and year exactly?
2023 Highlander
I have an older Lexus which doesnt have the screen . I never liked that feature I used tech stream to set it up so that when I unlock my doors it only unlocks the drivers door ( I am mostly alone) and also when I put my car into park only my drivers doors unlocks which I should change, normally you door will unlock when the door handle inside so no real point in having it auto unlock when I put the car in park lol
Thanks Brian!
Awesome tip! ✅
RAV4 redesign in 2024? 🤔
You’re welcome! I don’t see a new RAV4 I see new Tacoma
@@brianruperti Seeing an all new 2024 redesign. Gas model discoed.
Does this work on a 2022 Yaris Cross in GB.
Mmm not sure you have me stumped! I haven’t seen that car yet. It should work.
"unplanned visit"
Thank you so much...valuable information...is it also available with Toyota CHR 2022?
For the 2022 CHR I’m 60% sure it can do this. But I don’t have one to check sorry!
