I got a 2022 RAV 4 hybrid xle premium last June, my second RAV 4 replacing a 2001 model that finally gave up the ghost after safely and successfuly carrying me well over 230, 000 miles. I'm getting between 46 to 50 miles per gallon with the hybrid and it has a really thrilling acceleration power especially when using the power mode. These Toyota videos by guys who know their stuff helps greatly in figuring out all the neat features of the car and I'm really apppreciative, Brian !
Hey thanks for watching!
OK straight and to the point, no gimmicks. These are the best informational videos. THANK YOU!!
Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Great video very instructive. I’ve had a 2012 prius for 12 years. Thank you for your video🤙🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Just got a hybrid XLE Highlander last week, I’ve learned more from this video than what the salesperson tried to explain. Very informative… thanks!
Glad it helped!
I've had a RAV4 Hybrid XLE for a week. The gas mileage is at 36mph so far. It's been interesting learning how the car works.
Traded in our 2017 RAV4 for a hybrid version and getting double the gas mileage! I watched this video and several others before picking up my RAV from the dealership - nice job.
Congrats! Thanks for watching
You said that the hybrid system is lighter because there is no drive shaft. Two other videos said that the hybrid system is 400 pounds heavier. Because now there is 2 motors under the hood and a heavy battery pack under the vehicle. Yes you do get better gas mileage. But the hybrid is heavier.
Sure but what matters in the end when a Corolla ts consumes like a smal petrol car id say thats good Engineering
30% more range is advertised and it shows in my wallet as proof plus reliability is all i care about
My mistake! Thanks for correcting me.
I have a 2022 Rav4hybrid. This is my first Toyota. I have a Limited. I wanted all the bells and whistles. But now I am overwhelmed with the complexity of them. The manual is in Greek to me.My dealer gave me the keyfobs and said good luck! What can I do? Even the you tube videos are confusing. I feel like returning it!
Congrats! This video should help:

I just bought a Crown Signia. Have never owned a hybrid. This video was very helpful! Thanks so much. 😊
I bought my xle hybrid 2022 last month. so far i love it.
Great and congrats! Take good care of it
Thanks for the information. Bought my Rav4 new 2021 but, since I'm retired I only drive it to and from groceries most of the time. Had only 14000 mi. so far. Having those video information you gave makes me well informed. Thank you.
Keep the videos coming, very helpful. Thanks!
Will do. Glad I could help!
There are 9 modes of operation for the transmission, if we can call it that. It blends the electric motor and the engine seemlessly, depending on the state of charge, the throttle input, ect... Sounds complicated, but it's just computer stuff.
If you don't mind how a CVT feels (the CVT drone when accelerating), it's a great system, the E-CVT transmission is virtually indestructible, since it has no high-wear parts, unlike your typical CVT or Double-clutch transmission, and it's mechanically very simple.
Leave it in Normal, the other settings just map the throttle and other various bits, and are kind of pointless. Eco just makes the car too sluggish, EV setting is really not that useful.
With a bit of trying, you can save 15-20% fuel compared to normal driving, especially around town. You won't save anything on a highway though.
If you don't like the engine droning, Honda has a very good system too, and probably easier to get the best out of it. As for the rest of the competition, ... Nah.
I like your video Brian 👍🏻👍🏻. Short and right to the point. Thanks for the info.
Glad to help thanks for watching!
I bought a used 2021 RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium about a week ago and am really enjoying it so far. I love all the informational displays so I can see how my driving style improves or hurts my gas mileage. I just hit 39 mpg this morning, and I'm hoping with a bit more adjusting to my driving style I can hit 40+ mpg eventually. Seeing the EV symbol come on in slower city driving is very satisfying knowing they're essentially "free" miles! I also love how quiet the car is in EV mode. I'm not a fan of loud cars or traffic noise.
Congrats!
Brian can you do a 2022 Tacoma review just like you did your 2021? I know they’re similar almost the exact same, but would love to hear and see your side on it!
Yes of course! When we get some more in I will be doing all the 2022 models :-)
Also stay tuned for an update on my review of my truck!
Silly question, how do you put it on battery (accessory) mode only without starting the car?
Without pressing the brake, press the push start button once for radio, second time for radio and AC, third time to power down.
Two questions. Are Toyota AWD hybrids faster since there is a second engine providing torque? (Im looking at an AWD Sienna hybrid) Does the battery capture regen energy faster with AWD since there are potentially two electric engines that are capable of providing power?
Great questions. Generally the hybrids are faster yes. The battery uses regen braking to recharge so both variants will reboot just as effectively. Enjoy!
Great, I've watched so many videos. You've done this so well. PPrime 2022 is sort of complicated
Thank you!
We just got a 2016 Highlander hybrid. It gets such good mileage! I find getting great mileage in the city is the hardest, I mean 8.5l/100km is still great but on the hwy we can get a lot better than that. Got 7.8l/100km on a 400km highway trip.
Nice numbers!
Please do a review on Toyota Prius Eco... nice
I am disappointed in the info tainment system. The Android auto uses my data and I have to restart whenever I turn ignition off and on again!
There are settings on your phone for auto connection, check the android auto settings. Upgrade your phone/ plan to 5g unlimited data. I'm using Verizon and never worry about it.
I have 2021 Hybrid Rav 4 XLE. I have had it 4.5 months. I love my car. Had to drive in a couple of snow storms and rainstorms in Utah.
I am impressed with how the car drives.
Took a little time to get used to it being quiet when it starts.
I am glad I bought one.
If there is any recalls I want to know so I can get it fixed. I am at 58,000 miles on the car.

Big time especially with less of a need for fuel.

@@brianruperti thank you... new vehicles are so hard to get right now. We have our dealer a deposit to try and find one in Moondust. So far we've stuck out within 500 miles of Kansas City.

This was excellent😊
Helpful. My EV car indicator only comes on when I release the accelerator. Should it come on more frequently? I keep the car in ECO Mode. Thanks
This is normal behavior of the car. It will be on at low speeds with light throttle and when no throttle input happens.
Great video! I'm disappointed that my dealership didn't explain things better to me. I just got the 2022 Rav4 XLE Hybrid in Magnetic Grey. I have learned so much from your videos so far. Do you have a video on how to get the best MPG on a Rav4 Hybrid? Thanks!
Hey thanks I’m glad to help! Don’t have a video on that yet but if you UA-cam search “hypermiling” that will give you some ideas.
@@brianruperti Thanks for useful video! The lady has Toyota Yaris 2018 Hybrid and I payed my RAV 4 XLE PREMIUM. Toyota Hybrid are fantastic cars - easy to drive, economic and also powerful in my case RAV 4 is fun to drive and with electric motors gives this “extra up” to make the sport mode really fun to drive! Good luck and keep going like that👏
Thank you! Nice rides
wouldnt the constant on/off of the engine be a bad thing? in normal cars making short trips is bad for the cylinders
This ain’t no normal car! 😎
Couple of crazy questions....
I always wondered what will happen if I or someone in my car Accidentally touched the park button !?! what Does the car do ?!? Does it damage the transmission OR just the breaks luck on the wheels and nothing gets damaged ?!?
2 - can I connect a small portable solar panel to any of the batteries , could I get a longer range electric drive from my 17 prius prime plug in ?!?
I don’t know ever would happen I imagine it wouldn’t let you park while moving.
I would consult with your service center on if connecting solar panels is a thing you can safely do.
I just got a used 2022 Toyota corolla hybrid. But my battery is never as high as yours in fact is always on the low end like 30%-40%. Is it ruined?
I don’t know because I can’t diagnose a vehicle
I have bought a Toyota Rav4 2017 and the hybrid batteri is always charged 80 procent exactly like your car. Can this be a problem for the hybrid system or it is normal?
Sounds fine but if you’re concerned I’d welcome you to your local service department
Have had issues with moisture smell.
The Aircondioning hose was cleared and the smell disappeared for a week or so.
But it has come back again.
Anyone else having moisture smell?
If yes have you had a permanent resolution?

Again another great video. I picked up my 2021 rav4 xle hybrid last Thursday and I love it. Do you think you can do a quick video on how to break it in? Toyota says it needs 600 miles to do so. Thank you again.
Thank you for your support! Congrats on the new car! What color!
I can tell you my recommend break in here: first 600 miles:
*try not to hard stop
*no heavy acceleration
*no long trips
*keep rpms 4K and under (mid range and under for hybrid)
*do not surpass 70mph
*allow for variation in rpms (all below 4K/mid range)
Hope that helps!
@Salsa King I would love to know as well as I’m almost at 600 miles and I got this exact model exactly a week ago lol kind of scared because I broke a few of the rules already
🙈 I am thinking of buying a second hand Toyota Corolla saloon 2020 model so it will be broken in. This was new to me. I didn’t realise you had to break in a hybrid.
Hi Brian, I see you have 575 miles of gas till empty. I assume that's the range when that hits zero. Is it then the fuel light comes on thanks toyota camry driver
Hello, Fuel light will come on before 0.
I heard the this generation of the Rav4 hybrid has wind noise issues, but the issue was addressed in the 2022 model. Have you heard anything about it Brian?
I haven’t heard much about wind noise complaints. I’m sure if anyone that purchased from me had the issue it was remedied in service. But my clients usually bring up any issues with me and they’ve all been very happy!
Hi Brian I have a toyota alphard hiybrid 2005 , how do I use the two pin electric plugs front&rear like the cigarette lighter, is there a special plug that I require, thanks Dave Bowley
Hi you just need to make sure the plug is compatible w the 2 pin sockets
Waiting on my RAV4 Limited Hybrid. A video on programming would be helpful. Coming from a 2008 Sonata probably the last car that you just put key in and go! Only thing I had to program was clock and set radio stations lol.

A “crash course” on automobile operation?
Otherwise: 10/10. Thx.
Don’t crash
Hi Brian.I loved your crash course. I just got a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid (6 miles) a week ago. I had a Honda accord V6 sedan for 16 years. I am a senior in my 70's. I think I made a decision too quick on purchasing this car. I do like it, however it makes a loud noise and I have taken it in to service twice and they told me to just drive it a while. I don't think the noise is normal, so when it made the noise again I had the service manager ride with me and he said he didn't know what the noise was, so I have to take it back in this Wednesday. Yesterday when it was 55 degrees here in Denver, it didn't make the noise. So I guess its more so when its cold. Any suggestions? I currently have 100 miles on the car now. Thank you for your response in this matter.
Hi thank you for watching and congrats on your car. If you feel the noise is not good and the service manager is concerned, then I would press the matter.
Thank you for this video. 574 miles to empty! 🤯😂. My gas tank in my Jeep Wrangler only gives me 318 miles from full! I’m only getting around 20 mpg in it. I am so excited to make the switch to a hybrid!
Glad you watched it!
Did they change the location of the high voltage battery? newer models have it under the rear seat... right?
How does the AC get powered in hybrid RAV4 ??
Some new hybrids have battery under the car. AC is powered by hybrid battery
I’m glad I discovered your channel. It started with the key fob. I’ve had my ‘23 CC XSE hybrid for a month. I like how the engine shuts off at the drive-thru. I like how smooth it is, really no shifting. I only lack the 360 camera, which I thought the XSE had, and l don’t believe Toyota has the underneath road noise reduction like they maybe had on earlier Toyota models. Other than that, I’ve enjoyed it, and find excuses to drive it.
Thanks for watching!
Great film..I am new to it..I was getting 40mph now I'm getting 34...what am I doing wrong..I try to keep my car in the green but as I do I have to drive slowly and I can't do 40 on the highway..I'm driving 🙃 a 2022 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid LE
..thanks Dave
Hmm that’s a dive in MPG. Might want to start with checking tire pressure, engine air filter, and extra cargo being carried. If still worse, you may want to stop by service.
Great review. Very informative. So I’m planning on replacing my factory rims for some more customize rims. Would it affect the performance of the hybrid system?
Thank you. Yes it will. It can effect the system by changing how it interprets vehicle speed. The extra weight of different rims/tires could possibly strain the system/transmission.
I am not a technician. So take this and combine it with your own research. But if you keep the wheel size about the same and don’t get very heavy hardcore tires, I imagine you’d be fine.
But remember, the closest to stock you stay, the more reliable you’ll be. In my opinion there is no arguing that.
Thanks for the advice. I definitely will take this into consideration before making my decision.
I’ve had my xle hybrid for 2 days now and with 122 miles I’ve only seen the battery go passed half one time but never fully charged. Is this normal?
Btw GREAT video!
Congrats and this is normal because it always tries to recharge, and thanks!
Can you review the Prius hybrid AWD 2024?
Thank you
Will do
Thanks. Very helpful. Keep them coming.

Great video! So helpful. It's easy to forget some to the stuff we hear at the dealership. I personally had heart eyes looking at my new car so some of the information didn't stick 😂 I got a 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross early March and I love it. My first hybrid so the silent engine took some getting used to lol. The only hiccup I've had is not being able to find my multimedia device ID to register it on the MyT App. Am I missing something obvious? It's no biggie and I know I could go to the dealership but just haven't had the time. Anyway great video. Keep em coming 🙂

Is it best to runs car for a few mins before driving off on a cold morning? You mention that hybrids have a warming system. Does it use petrol to heat the car if you turn on heating? In a Toyota Corolla for instance. Tnks so much.

Getting a highlander hybrid soon, just had a question about EV mode, I see the dashboard EV light turns on and off automatically, does this mean that the vehicle goes into EV mode automatically or do I need to press that button to activate it ?
The Highlander will go into EV mode as much as possible. No buttons needed

Anyway, I watched 2 videos and now think I know how to do some things! One thing I can’t confirm is my back up camera. I only have non moving lines, predictive but not dynamic. Every video I watch has blue and yellow lines and I only have blue. And no options on screen to change view. I tried the ‘turn wheel left-hold-turn wheel right thing’ there internet said, as well as looking for the service menu but camera doesn’t show. Do I need to go back to dealer?

Not sure I would consult with your service center to see what they recommend.
@@brianruperti Thanks, Brian! Will do.
Enjoy your UA-cam channel. I just bought this RAV4 hybrid. Has 75,000 miles on it. Concerned about battery. I hanever been able to get the battery to show full charge. Recently on a trip on the interstate this, in the picture is the best it would do. When it gets to three empty bars from top it starts using from the battery. Is this normal? Is there an adjustment needed for that.? I could figure out how to send the picture. What it is the picture of the engine running the car at 74 mph. Also pulling voltage from the battery with only 4 bars of battery. The battery level never gets higher. I had driven on interstate 30 minutes when picture was taken.
Thank you. I don’t know if this is normal per se. I know all the hybrid batteries will reach as high as they can, given how they’re being driven. If the car is regularly netting 39-41mpg and it drives well, then I would say it’s doing its job. If the mileage is off, I’d get it looked at. But if you have concerns, it always helps to have the service center taken a look and make sure all is well.
@@brianruperti being a Broadcast engineer working with batteries. When you can’t get a battery to go full charge, in the past, has pointed to issues. Or the battery will be short lived. I would like to be able to use the EV mode in my subdivision. When I push EV get error not available battery low. I went to Toyota store and couldn’t get past the service department gate keeper. Like I was bringing a frivolous law suit or something.
I have a hybrid car and the battery, (I mean hybrid battery) is always half full, 4 out of 8 fields, most of the time it turns from 3 to 4 charged fields, never fully charged, When I want to use only EV mode it says that the battery is empty. What can you tell me about that. Thank you.
Do you always do short trips?
It is supposed to be half full, and fluctuate between 25 and 75 % for longest battery life. Do not try to get it to full, the car won’t allow it anyway unless you force it to, i.e going down a long slope in B mode. The car tries to keep it between 25-75% and everything is fine if it’s mostly at 50%.
Thanks Brian I learned a lot from this my xle premium will be here this week.
You’re welcome!
Very helpful. Would love to see this in a highlander.
Very similar! And it is available!
@@brianruperti good deal! Excited to test drive one those soon.
Thanks! You mention the green car “EV” showing up - but what has to happen for it to show up? What did you do to know you were about to see the green EV car icon?
The green EV car comes on when the engine is off
But I actually have not yet figured out how to turn off the “engine” - for example (I’m assuming), to sit in the parked car, using the air con and listening to music. (I’m too lazy to consult the manual). Is that what you mean by “when engine is off”?
So informative. Thank you for the quality of your videos.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏼
can I leave my EV mode on all the time? Does it automatically shut off if it is not needed?
EV mode is only good for low speeds under 25mph. So it will automatically shut off after about 25-30mph or under other conditions like harsh acceleration, extreme cold, high demand of electronic options etc.
I need more instructions on lane centering, how to turn it on?
In the MID:
Use the arrows to go to settings>scroll down>LDA>press and hold OK> you’ll see the settings in there
Quick question, is there a specific speed the engine kicks on?
Depends on the model you’re working with. Most of the hybrids kick in after 25mph but the prime can go highway speeds in EV mode.
What is the max speed, on only EV MODE, that one can drive on?
Depending on the car, about 25mph
On my Sienna, going downhill, the engine shuts off, and it was running strictly on battery, and charging the battery at the same time.
I hope you get paid for these videos, Brian, as they are very good. Just bought a 2023 RAV4 Hybrid Premium, Lunar Rock with black interior. It is a Japanese made car with the cool wheels.
