Right there with you. It’s like studying for the test for me right now. The next vehicle we purchase will be with cash and will be a Toyota or Lexus thanks to this man. His wealth of knowledge with the Toyota and Lexus family is insane for really the limited number of years he worked with Toyota. His passion with this brand has fueled his knowledge. There are 40+ year mechanics that don’t have half the in depth knowledge and ability as AMD. Not to mention the quality of his videos have been amazing especially when he was doing this solo. Agree 💯, regardless my “lifetime” transmission fluid I change ATF every 30k miles , genuine Toyota WS and my transmission works flawless, smooth and not shudder !
@Alfred Weber If the car is in new-like shape and you're dealing with the transmission, I have found it BEST to drain and measure what comes out of the transmission and add back in that same amount. If you want to be extra safe you can see what the manufacture recommends, then compare what comes out and adjust accordingly. Amen.
Had lots of toyotas in my time, but never knew the oil procedure. Always thought it was at cold temperature. Simple logic but true. Learn new stuff everyday.

@@michaelfiadzigbey4311 seized engine needs oil. Never let it run out. Take the plugs out and put a tablespoon of oil in each cylinder. Ok then disconnect the EFI fuse or relay. Then get a big wrench on the main pulley and try to turn it clockwise. Some engines turn the other way. But anyway just make sure it is loosened and you can turn it. If you can't turn the engine with a breaker bar and socket. STOP. Get someone else. Otherwise, if it turns, get inside and crank with a key for several minutes in 20 second intervals. Wait 30 seconds crank 20 seconds. Then, Replace the the plugs if they look ok. And replace the EFI fuse or relay. And try it out. It should smoke a bit temporarily.
Most oil manufacturers and auto makers recommend measure oil level when cold. Safer. Expansion is negligible (less than 5%). Surprised he didn't mention to ensure car is on a level surface. Otherwise all other tips were great.

74 yr old DIY - blew my mind when you described proper way to check oil level! Never heard this before. All my other cars say to check oil level when cold. Thank you for pointing out this procedure for Toyota which is described in owner's manual "warm up hybrid system; shut off for 5 minutes and check level" .
This is why I bought a 2023 ES300h, no turbo, a naturally aspirated engine, and an electric motor. Just filled her up and I'm getting around 43 MPG City/Hwy driving. She's only one-month old and I've already changed the oil at 1,000 miles like AMD recommends for all Toyota hybrids! Took a lot of flack on the Club Lexus forum but like Scotty Kilmer says, oil & filters are cheap, engines are expensive to replace. NUFF said. PS - I found an Independent ex-Toyota and ex-Lexus mechanic for my oil & filter change. He let me watch, ask questions, and he properly filled the tire pressure after the oil change. Oh and he did it the proper way, fill it with oil, checked the oil level, started the engine, let run for 20-30 seconds, then checked again, and added oil till you get the proper amount on the dipstick. 😎
Hybrids compare to turbo engines do not need changing more frequently, or every 1,000 mi, or I have misunderstood what you said? Lexus told me every 5,000 mi, not less to change the oil on my 2011 RX 450h AWD crossover. Sime are suggesting every 7,000 mi when lighter senior-type of driving load.

I have always checked oil when the car sat overnight. The beautiful part of your videos is the way you relay this information with a good dose of common sense. Thank you so much for explaining the weird reverse noise…I actually called the salesperson 2 days after having it, and thought it was broken because it was such a weird noise (never had a hybrid before, and previous car was 12 years old…so a little less complicated.) Thank you also about checking the oil tip…I think my Dad, many moons ago, probably when I was 16, got a car for my birthday, and had to prove to him that I could change a tire, check oil, etc, etc…good idea from Dad so I knew what I was doing, especially in pre-cell phone days. However, he always told me to check the oil when the car was cold (or also when I was getting gas…it was a little confusing.) Also, this would relate to 80s cars…a little different technology, lol. So, good! I thought the most accurate oil reading was when the car was cold. Love your channel…helped me so much when shopping for my new RAV4 XSE Hybrid…I love it, but it is very different from a gas car (not bad, just different…love the gas mileage!) and had so many tech updates (still reaching for my keys when getting in the car to unlock it and start it, lol,) I didn’t understand a lot of what it was doing. Your channel is so awesome about explaining things in a way that’s easy for someone who doesn’t work on cars (me) and for someone who does (my husband.) You are a blessing for Toyota hybrid owners, and Toyota owners in general (he got a Tundra earlier this year.) Please keep up the great work! Don't know where I found this, but I saw it referred to as the "Chorus of Tortured Souls". 💀 Hey, whatever it takes. I've crept up on people in parking lots with my '06 hybrid which doesn't have a sound and made them jump.
@@sp-ce He said that the Toyota Hybrid’s all make this strange “noise” when in reverse to let people around you hear you so they don’t get hit by the car. Most other brands make a beeping sound, Toyota likes a weird grinding sounding noise, lol. I don’t even notice it anymore.
It makes logical sense to check the oil level when warm - that will be the oil level of the car when in operation. When the oil is just sitting in the bottom of the pan doing nothing when the car isn’t running who cares about the cold oil level.

Just found your channel while researching to buy my first Toyota. I currently have an i30 and I have noticed my speedometer is out, will look into this for my Hyundai too. I'm pretty sold on buying a hybrid Toyota. I can do basics like oil changes, filter changes etc on my cars but owning a hybrid is all new to me. Your videos are great! Thankyou for educating people about their cars, as someone who isnt very mechanically minded and is fearful of doing their own work on their car, you explain things very well in clear way thats easy to understand. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, useful advice. For many old timers on the wrong side of 60, common sense is a common virtue and the following suggestion goes without saying. I'll direct this to all millennials and younger, please make sure you're on level ground when checking fluids. Most gas stations have level ground around the pumps which by the way, is a great time to check your oil level. If you are unsure if the ground is level, just set down a bottle of water to get a ruf idea. Thanks again!

The hybrid batteries can actually last a very long time ( typically 150K miles to 300k ) I will save $20,000 in gasoline costs in my Honda Hybrid before I need to replace the battery. Judging by California gas prices. So I save $ 20,000 in gas and buy one $3,000 battery down the line, doesn't that sound pretty good? Lol. Yes you pay several thousands, but you'll save way more in gas so it doesn't matter
@@jonathanp.5445 from what I’ve heard a hybrid battery runs over $5k. I’m certainly not going to buy a new hybrid at over $30-40k plus. A Full plug in hybrid needs a 240 V home service, if you own a home. that’s a several thousand dollar expense. Last year I bought my 2002 Lexus ES300 one owner excellently maintained for $5,495. I’m getting 32 mpg on the highway about 20 mpg in the city. Im not in a position to even entertain an electric car when my Lexus is one of the most reliable and well built cars ever made.

Thank you Ahmed. I appreciate all you teach about cars. I'm a 2017 toyota camry owner. I don't work on my own car but I do check the oil. My oil is low a lot of times and I put a quart of oil in the engine like once every 6 weeks. The car has 189,000 miles. The last time my mechanic changed my oil he thought there was too much oil. Maybe the car is not losing the amount of oil I put back into it. Maybe I'm checking the oil first thing in the morning when I drive it. I know I do that. I will let the engine run for 5 mins before I check next time. I will also let it rest 1 minute before checking it. Thanks for the tip. Love your videos

Let me tell you why I just subscribed. I've watched 2 other of your videos and was impressed, but I'm easily impressed by stuff I don't fully understand. I almost never subscribe to anything tho. What happened here is you nailed a nagging question I've never googled and that is the humming sound coming from our Lexus ES. My wife parks hers in the garage and we've heard that sound. I have the same exact car (different color) but park outside and never heard it from mine. You're awesome!
Thank you for the detailed speedometer info. I've suspected it was off the whole time by up to 4mph at 65mph. The local dealer, whom I don't trust and now has a new owner, told me it was acceptable to be off by up to 15%. I called bs. A 2021 prius prime is so technologically advanced it should be able to get the speed correct.
Speedometers by law cannot tell slower speed than in reality. By going off 4mph/4kph more the producent assures no further court cases as they have proof they are far away from such situation. This isn't bad, by going exactly the speedlimit you are sure you aren't braking any laws. I mean, most cars do this. I think only Mazda tells speed 1:1. Other brands do this too.

Thanks for clarifying the speedometer thing. My Vibe GT (Matrix) has 18" wheels and when I first got it, people were tailgating me a lot. I later learned from google maps that I was consistently going 5 under the speed limit lol

My parking brake on my 2022 Lexus ES350 UL works just the opposite of how you described. It’s located just below the start button and you push to manually activate and pull to release. I realized this immediately while watching your video because in my mind I memorized how the old foot parking breaks were push and how when you released them they would pop back up. Yours works like an old VW GTI pull to activated and when released they will fall forward. Just though I’d mention in case anyone else got confused. PS: Coming upon my 1000 mile oil change and know my local oil and lube guys are gonna look at me crazy when I get my oil changed….lol
Thank you for this video! I do however have 1 thing you didn't know about thieves. See your pull lever for your garage door opener, with the red handle and red string hanging there just inside your garage door? Cut that handle off where the string just hangs on its own. Thieves can insert a tool into the top of your garage door (yes, when it is closed) that catches your handle, pulls it to disengage the opener, and then they can manually push your garage door up (unless you have a lock on the garage door itself), enter, and push the door back down, and no one can see that someone is inside your home. The disadvantage of not having that handle is worth the security hack.
Side note on the EVAP system: Do NOT overfill your gas tank! When the gas pump automatically shuts of at fill-up, that’s all! (Some people like to squeeze a few more drops into the gas tank after the pump shuts off. Doing this risks flooding the charcoal canister and, TA-DA: check engine light!)
Had an old Prius and the bladder gets weird when it’s cold cold outside. I’m used to this because of that issue with the old Priuses. Thanks for the tip. I need to stop that habit.

When I had my Camry SE Sport the speedometer was 4 MPH slower then what was shown on the dash. Now I know why, thank you AMD. Also, the 2022 Tacoma I bought might well be an alien compared to the rest of the line up. No easy place to hang the gas cap...
I’m in England and bought a used low-mileage tiny Toyota iQ, nearly 3 years ago. Sure enough the petrol flap has lugs on it which hold that cap . I hadn’t realized, - it’s in the handbook. Stopping the open door signal, also works. In addition , I have been checking oil-levels with the car level and cold. I do very low mileage and the oil level always sits exactly on the upper mark . Now , I pay my local Toyota dealer to change oil and filter, as part of an annual service ; so maybe their mechanics don’t know about about warm oil - it’s in the handbook. I will remind them. Maybe they are just lazy. I have not left my fuel cap off - yet. Thanks for your useful tips and all the hard-work that you both put in to produce these videos. I watch all of them.

Speaking of checking oil levels: you suggest checking at normal opating temp., but I believe it to be wise to check every morning to ensure there hasn't been a leak that has drained the crankcase. If the stick comes up dry, uh-oh! Also, when filling your gas tank, put it in auro-fill, then hang up the hose when it shuts off. "Topping up" can affect the evap system in the tank.
I have better things to do in life than check oil level every single Morning, beside if it really happened (the super rare failure you alluded to) a sensor in the motor would trigger an alert on the dashboard along with a alert beep
@@marcbungener1877 No, no-one checks their oil every day. But if you were to run out of oil the engine will have already suffered damage before you notice. Idiot lights and idiot buzzers are called that for a reason; they don't tell you much, and it's usually too late.
Hi AMD, loving your informative videos, please keep it up. I'm confused about one thing, you mentioned that is better to leave the electronic parking brake in auto, does leaving it in auto means that when I'm on a steep hill while holding the brake pedal and shifting it into P that it will AUTOMATICALLY do the proper parking on hill procedure: 1. Apply the handbrake first 2. Rest the car weight on the handbrake 3. Apply the parking pawl in the end Or do I still have to do the procedures manually when parking on steep hills?
Yes, speedo on my 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport is off by like 3 mph. I guess due to the fact the TRD Sport comes with 17" wheels as the others have 16" wheels. Always wondered why it was off. Thanks AMD!
Yep, I have always noticed when passing one of those "roadside speed indicator lighted signs" that when I pass by on cruise control set at 100 km/hr ( about 62 mph) the sign "flashes" 97 or 98 kilometers per hour" You would assume that each "trim" in each model range would have this set at the factory or at "predelivery" whether you have 17 inch wheels or 19 inch wheels. I always "assumed" that the tires are the same or very very close ( as in within a 1/2 inch or less) diameter just the bigger rims have a lower profile tire.
Golden info as always AMD! Especially about the automatic parking brake. For a manual transmission Corolla having the EPB on automatically helps ensure that it won't roll away after parking if I forget to put it in gear. Don't ask me how I find this important!
Cars are way to technical for the average driver. My 18 RAV4 has the manual parking brake with button release. Oh look, lever is up, parking brake ON, Oh look lever is down, parking brake off. And the added benefit, I can rest my hand n the lever while driving.

since the oil had run dry the engine should be fill with oil to required quantity, before putting back the EFI fuse and relay then start the engine.

PS - I found an Independent ex-Toyota and ex-Lexus mechanic for my oil & filter change. He let me watch, ask questions, and he properly filled the tire pressure after the oil change. Oh and he did it the proper way, fill it with oil, checked the oil level, started the engine, let run for 20-30 seconds, then checked again, and added oil till you get the proper amount on the dipstick. 😎
Hybrids compare to turbo engines do not need changing more frequently, or every 1,000 mi, or I have misunderstood what you said? Lexus told me every 5,000 mi, not less to change the oil on my 2011 RX 450h AWD crossover. Sime are suggesting every 7,000 mi when lighter senior-type of driving load.
I have learned so much from this guy! Many things have changed from the old cars, checking the oil, and that door buzzer was making me crazy for a year! Great job THANKS!

I have always checked oil when the car sat overnight. The beautiful part of your videos is the way you relay this information with a good dose of common sense. Thank you so much for explaining the weird reverse noise…I actually called the salesperson 2 days after having it, and thought it was broken because it was such a weird noise (never had a hybrid before, and previous car was 12 years old…so a little less complicated.) Thank you also about checking the oil tip…I think my Dad, many moons ago, probably when I was 16, got a car for my birthday, and had to prove to him that I could change a tire, check oil, etc, etc…good idea from Dad so I knew what I was doing, especially in pre-cell phone days. However, he always told me to check the oil when the car was cold (or also when I was getting gas…it was a little confusing.) Also, this would relate to 80s cars…a little different technology, lol. So, good! I thought the most accurate oil reading was when the car was cold. Love your channel…helped me so much when shopping for my new RAV4 XSE Hybrid…I love it, but it is very different from a gas car (not bad, just different…love the gas mileage!) and had so many tech updates (still reaching for my keys when getting in the car to unlock it and start it, lol,) I didn’t understand a lot of what it was doing. Your channel is so awesome about explaining things in a way that’s easy for someone who doesn’t work on cars (me) and for someone who does (my husband.) You are a blessing for Toyota hybrid owners, and Toyota owners in general (he got a Tundra earlier this year.) Please keep up the great work! @@sp-ce He said that the Toyota Hybrid’s all make this strange “noise” when in reverse to let people around you hear you so they don’t get hit by the car. Most other brands make a beeping sound, Toyota likes a weird grinding sounding noise, lol. I don’t even notice it anymore.

Toyota and Scotty Kilmer say to check engine oil level when cold. You are the only person I heard saying to check engine oil level when warm.
Warm, gives oils a better flow. Thus, a better more correct read!👓👓🎓🎓

It makes logical sense to check the oil level when warm - that will be the oil level of the car when in operation.
When the oil is just sitting in the bottom of the pan doing nothing when the car isn’t running who cares about the cold oil level.

Just found your channel while researching to buy my first Toyota. I currently have an i30 and I have noticed my speedometer is out, will look into this for my Hyundai too. I'm pretty sold on buying a hybrid Toyota. I can do basics like oil changes, filter changes etc on my cars but owning a hybrid is all new to me. Your videos are great! Thankyou for educating people about their cars, as someone who isnt very mechanically minded and is fearful of doing their own work on their car, you explain things very well in clear way thats easy to understand. Thank you so much for your thoughtful, useful advice. For many old timers on the wrong side of 60, common sense is a common virtue and the following suggestion goes without saying. I'll direct this to all millennials and younger, please make sure you're on level ground when checking fluids. Most gas stations have level ground around the pumps which by the way, is a great time to check your oil level. If you are unsure if the ground is level, just set down a bottle of water to get a ruf idea. Thanks again!

The hybrid batteries can actually last a very long time ( typically 150K miles to 300k ) I will save $20,000 in gasoline costs in my Honda Hybrid before I need to replace the battery. Judging by California gas prices. So I save $ 20,000 in gas and buy one $3,000 battery down the line, doesn't that sound pretty good? Lol. Yes you pay several thousands, but you'll save way more in gas so it doesn't matter
@@jonathanp.5445 from what I’ve heard a hybrid battery runs over $5k. I’m certainly not going to buy a new hybrid at over $30-40k plus. A Full plug in hybrid needs a 240 V home service, if you own a home. that’s a several thousand dollar expense.
Last year I bought my 2002 Lexus ES300 one owner excellently maintained for $5,495. I’m getting 32 mpg on the highway about 20 mpg in the city. Im not in a position to even entertain an electric car when my Lexus is one of the most reliable and well built cars ever made.

My oil is low a lot of times and I put a quart of oil in the engine like once every 6 weeks. The car has 189,000 miles. The last time my mechanic changed my oil he thought there was too much oil. Maybe the car is not losing the amount of oil I put back into it. Maybe I'm checking the oil first thing in the morning when I drive it. I know I do that. I will let the engine run for 5 mins before I check next time. I will also let it rest 1 minute before checking it. Thanks for the tip. Love your videos

Let me tell you why I just subscribed. I've watched 2 other of your videos and was impressed, but I'm easily impressed by stuff I don't fully understand. I almost never subscribe to anything tho. What happened here is you nailed a nagging question I've never googled and that is the humming sound coming from our Lexus ES. My wife parks hers in the garage and we've heard that sound. I have the same exact car (different color) but park outside and never heard it from mine. You're awesome!
Thank you for the detailed speedometer info. I've suspected it was off the whole time by up to 4mph at 65mph. The local dealer, whom I don't trust and now has a new owner, told me it was acceptable to be off by up to 15%. I called bs. A 2021 prius prime is so technologically advanced it should be able to get the speed correct.
Speedometers by law cannot tell slower speed than in reality. By going off 4mph/4kph more the producent assures no further court cases as they have proof they are far away from such situation. This isn't bad, by going exactly the speedlimit you are sure you aren't braking any laws. I mean, most cars do this. I think only Mazda tells speed 1:1. Other brands do this too.
In the UK speedos read 3 mph fast by law.

Thanks for clarifying the speedometer thing. My Vibe GT (Matrix) has 18" wheels and when I first got it, people were tailgating me a lot. I later learned from google maps that I was consistently going 5 under the speed limit lol

This is why I bought a 2023 ES300h, no turbo, a naturally aspirated engine, and an electric motor. Just filled her up and I'm getting around 43 MPG City/Hwy driving. She's only one-month old and I've already changed the oil at 1,000 miles like AMD recommends for all Toyota hybrids! Took a lot of flack on the Club Lexus forum but like Scotty Kilmer says, oil & filters are cheap, engines are expensive to replace. NUFF said.

My parking brake on my 2022 Lexus ES350 UL works just the opposite of how you described. It’s located just below the start button and you push to manually activate and pull to release. I realized this immediately while watching your video because in my mind I memorized how the old foot parking breaks were push and how when you released them they would pop back up. Yours works like an old VW GTI pull to activated and when released they will fall forward. Just though I’d mention in case anyone else got confused. PS: Coming upon my 1000 mile oil change and know my local oil and lube guys are gonna look at me crazy when I get my oil changed….lol
Thank you for this video! I do however have 1 thing you didn't know about thieves. See your pull lever for your garage door opener, with the red handle and red string hanging there just inside your garage door? Cut that handle off where the string just hangs on its own. Thieves can insert a tool into the top of your garage door (yes, when it is closed) that catches your handle, pulls it to disengage the opener, and then they can manually push your garage door up (unless you have a lock on the garage door itself), enter, and push the door back down, and no one can see that someone is inside your home. The disadvantage of not having that handle is worth the security hack.

Side note on the EVAP system: Do NOT overfill your gas tank! When the gas pump automatically shuts of at fill-up, that’s all!
(Some people like to squeeze a few more drops into the gas tank after the pump shuts off. Doing this risks flooding the charcoal canister and, TA-DA: check engine light!)

When I had my Camry SE Sport the speedometer was 4 MPH slower then what was shown on the dash. Now I know why, thank you AMD. Also, the 2022 Tacoma I bought might well be an alien compared to the rest of the line up. No easy place to hang the gas cap...
Sometimes you're just supposed to hang the tether for the gas cap from the fuel door instead of putting the cap threads in a holder.
The speedometer (Combo meter assembly) used to be model specific going some years when I installed them. Not sure if that’s still correct or not…
I’m in England and bought a used low-mileage tiny Toyota iQ, nearly 3 years ago. Sure enough the petrol flap has lugs on it which hold that cap . I hadn’t realized, - it’s in the handbook. Stopping the open door signal, also works. In addition , I have been checking oil-levels with the car level and cold. I do very low mileage and the oil level always sits exactly on the upper mark . Now , I pay my local Toyota dealer to change oil and filter, as part of an annual service ; so maybe their mechanics don’t know about about warm oil - it’s in the handbook. I will remind them. Maybe they are just lazy. I have not left my fuel cap off - yet.

Do what I did. I have an '08 4Runner then I bought a 2020 and also kept my '08! I couldn't part with it, It's been so reliable and in fantastic shape.

Speaking of checking oil levels: you suggest checking at normal opating temp., but I believe it to be wise to check every morning to ensure there hasn't been a leak that has drained the crankcase. If the stick comes up dry, uh-oh!
Also, when filling your gas tank, put it in auro-fill, then hang up the hose when it shuts off. "Topping up" can affect the evap system in the tank.
I have better things to do in life than check oil level every single Morning, beside if it really happened (the super rare failure you alluded to) a sensor in the motor would trigger an alert on the dashboard along with a alert beep

Hi AMD, loving your informative videos, please keep it up. I'm confused about one thing, you mentioned that is better to leave the electronic parking brake in auto, does leaving it in auto means that when I'm on a steep hill while holding the brake pedal and shifting it into P that it will AUTOMATICALLY do the proper parking on hill procedure:
1. Apply the handbrake first
2. Rest the car weight on the handbrake
3. Apply the parking pawl in the end
Or do I still have to do the procedures manually when parking on steep hills?

Yes, speedo on my 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport is off by like 3 mph. I guess due to the fact the TRD Sport comes with 17" wheels as the others have 16" wheels. Always wondered why it was off. Thanks AMD!
Yep, I have always noticed when passing one of those "roadside speed indicator lighted signs" that when I pass by on cruise control set at 100 km/hr ( about 62 mph) the sign "flashes" 97 or 98 kilometers per hour" You would assume that each "trim" in each model range would have this set at the factory or at "predelivery" whether you have 17 inch wheels or 19 inch wheels. I always "assumed" that the tires are the same or very very close ( as in within a 1/2 inch or less) diameter just the bigger rims have a lower profile tire.

Golden info as always AMD! Especially about the automatic parking brake. For a manual transmission Corolla having the EPB on automatically helps ensure that it won't roll away after parking if I forget to put it in gear. Don't ask me how I find this important!
Cars are way to technical for the average driver. My 18 RAV4 has the manual parking brake with button release. Oh look, lever is up, parking brake ON, Oh look lever is down, parking brake off. And the added benefit, I can rest my hand n the lever while driving.

6: You can use the "Brake Hold" function so you don't keep your foot on the brake pedal at the traffic lights.
I love this feature, especially in traffic.
