- If you need a solid way to make an acoustic drumset ALOT quieter, then there are two solid methods to look at. Remo Heads with Zildjian L80 cymbals, or RTOM Black Hole Heads plus cymbal mutes:
Remo/Ziljian
Pros: feels great, metal cymbals, and very quiet
Cons: Takes a long time to take the mesh heads on and off
RTOM/Cymbal Mutes
Pros: Takes Seconds to put them on, sounds more acousticy
Cons: Stick rebound from the cymbal mutes isn't as good and RTom is a tad louder.

Ok, I'm leaving this comment for the people who are in the same boat as I am. My drums are set up in my man cave down the hall from my wife's and my bedroom. I get home from work at 10PM. My wife is in bed asleep and I have neighbors just 15 feet on both sides of me. So I need the absolute quietest set up or I can't play. The l80s and silent strokes are a GOD send! Those two were created for one reason, to practice quietly without distributing others. They do that fantastically. DON'T hesitate buy them.

I get it is part of the metal style to dig in, but it sucks for the soundbalance with the rest of the band

Hey Justin had a question about the Silent Stroke Heads. Can you use triggers on them? I mean will they trigger properly? I have a DW mini-Pro kit that I’m thinking of converting for certain gigs and wanted to know if that option will work or not? Thanks! Great videos, I love your channel!

Yeah, that's how I'm going. It doesn't take long to change a cymbal.
RTom Black Holes are great because you don't have to change the heads and it retains the pitch and overall sound of the drums, just not so loud. L80s are great because they are still cymbals, so no need to change you technique or have it suffer.
I have the sound off pads from 25 years ago, and I always wished the cymbal pads wrapped around the edge like they do now. I need to upgrade! Also, the ridiculous soft foam kick pad from back then is awful. Mine are all dried up now, not surprisingly. Of the two sets you reviewed, which do you think lowers the kick volume most? Thanks!
my setup has the L80 cymbals, silentstroke heads on my kick and toms, and then the black hole on my snare. I do alot of rim stuff so having that rubber rim on the snare really helps control that sound.
This setup works well and doesnt bother my neighbors in the adjacent apartments too much.

I have a set of the RTOM’s and the Sabian QuieTone’s. This is THE best combo for me at home and the cymbal switch doesn’t really take that long.

Hi Justin, thanks for the video. Wanted to know your suggestion between low volume cymbals Vs Cymbal mute circle rings; which will still have closest feel.
I got the Aquarian Superpad definitely a lot lower volume. But as loud as a hard practice pad and as loud as hitting a electronic ride cymbal. I put some towels in the toms to mute it even more. You can still hear it through the door but 2 rooms away a small tapping sound. 3 doors away faint sound. U can hear just a little directly upstairs. If the tv is on. You can’t hear it at all.
An alternative for the rubber pads are Meinl cymbal tuners.
Can I solicit a purchase recommendation? I don't really like electronic drums much (I've played an older Roland flagship, among others, and did an A-E conversion myself), but I am in a situation (moving to a tightly spaced single family house) where I think an acoustic would be too loud. I am mainly interested in practicing (not recording), so am looking for something closest to acoustic feel, but certainly it is nice to have good sounds while you practice. I am considering something like a Yamaha stage custom with black hole pads and L80 (or similar) cymbals vs buying something like a strike pro. I tried the strike pro in a store and was surprised about how nice it felt, even compared to more expensive Rolands or ATV. I couldn't really evaluate the electronics and sounds. As an alternative, I could do tru trac pads instead of the black holes. I also tried these and like them, but the reviews generally say playing on the rubber gets tedious after a while. Thanks for any input.

Justin you rock! Dope! Billy Ballistic mesh are the best there is I practice every day with 5 minute 70 80 90 singles click then play for a couple of hours for the past 5 years and I play hard.
Looks like you did the demo at Sweetwater. I've played both those kits there as well. My choice would be the combo of the Black Hole pads with the L80 symbols.

Do you think I can use one of those black hole things on its own, without a drum beneath it, as a practice pad. I don't like how rubber practice pads feel, and I think skills learned on those are much harder to translate to a drum kit, be it electronic or acoustic, than skills learned on a mesh pad would be (unless we are translating into a rubber electric kit, I guess.)
Not sure if you're still looking for an answer to this, but oh well...
I don't own the RTOM black hole (or any of these drum mute practice pads). But from what I understand, the RTOM isn't really made to be played by itself (without being placed on a drum). The aquarian superpad, which seems to be just as good as the RTOM (except for not being able to do rimshots quietly), can be played by itself though, as well as being placed over a drum. Depending on the country you are in, they might be hard to find though.
im trying to decide between an upper tier drum-tec electric kit or something like a pearl export, k sweet cymbal pack with mute options on the entire kit and maybe experiment with recording with the mutes on and then use superior drummer, or some program, to do sample replacement for the sounds. Any insight with my dilemma? Ive only done drum recording with my Alesis dm10 mk2 kit that I currently own. My current living situation calls for me to be quiet more often than not, but I plan to eventually have a recording situation that has no noise limitations. I also want to leave the door open to the high probability of playing drums in a live setting, in the future. I AM one of those guitar players you mentioned in the video haha so I would prefer to spend this type of money (3grand range) on a pretty permanent option, and doubt having both an acoustic and electric setup to ever be in my future. Thank you in advance, if you can provide any words of wisdom.
I have 3 ply mesh heads on my acoustic, along with the L80's and I honestly couldn't be happier.
The volume is low enough not to bother anyone and I can play without being too paranoid of the noise I'm making, I agree that the L80's aren't 'pretty' sounding but to have the feel of a real cymbal compared to a mute is a god send - once I switched from the mutes I found myself playing a lot more.
I recommend them.
The mesh heads are fairly quiet (reso heads still on) snare is probably loudest but overall a decent sound, only down side is they are a bit bouncy.

hi, are the black holes compatible with the star cast series tom support system such as the tama starclassic battery?
I heard the RToms are great on the snare and toms - but are difficult on the bass drums. I'm leaning toward the RToms but would appreciate if anybody who has them can clarify if they experience this issue with their kick (I play double bass a lot )?

He just did. You can put a trigger on a Silent Stroke and get an e drum. So the e drum is a bit quieter.
Blackholes are better because one u can trigger them but two the feel is so much better that an e set

Ha, I can only speak for myself, I’m a guitar player. I’m building a digital band all playing through Bose L1 systems. Guitar processors have gotten great and keyboards are so common. I wanted to learn about e-drums and found your channel. I’m almost halfway to having everything. 4 Bose L1 towers, td-25kv, Headrush guitar processor, tech 21 bass fly rig, and a keyboard rig.
Why would you buy 4 small towers meant for bars and cafes? For that money you could have got JBL SRX and had a lot more projection and power. Without a sub.

I believe so, the rim is REALLY thin so I can't say for sure.

I’m looking at going from electronic to acoustic drums - I’d messaged you about upgrading my Roland TD1KV some time back - however, after ‘feeling’ a 1980s acoustic Tama poplar-shell kit, I’m leaning towards an acoustic kit.
Looking at a Mapex Saturn V 5-piece kit (with two floor Toms) and a 14x5.5 Ludwig steel snare.
Here in Australia, RTOMs became available around June 2017, and it’ll cost me around Au$700-ish to get RTOMs for all the shells.
The idea is to pair it all with Tama hardware and either Quiet Tone or L80 cymbals - hook it all up to microphones + a mixer and practice with headphones.
So far, the RTOM and Sabian Quiet Tone combo look promising - especially since I want the actual sound of the shells and cymbals albeit at a reduced volume - would love your thoughts, please.

I put the down payment on a Saturn V 4-piece shell kit (Deep Water finish) - 10, 12 and 16” toms with a 22” bass drum.
The Maple-Walnut shells are awesome - just like your friend said.
Loved it - I tried out so many kits - a cheap Ludwig, some Dixon kits (not bad), the Yamaha Live Custom oak series, a DW collectors maple set etc. - the kick drum on the Saturn V is pretty unique - I loved it - and Better Music (my local store) had a display kit which they were willing to give me for $1999. They’re giving me Tama’s stage master hardware with it for $360, and a Ludwig Supralite steel snare for $300.
Also ordered a RTOM Black Hole set + Sabian Quiet Tone Practice Cymbals Box (14” HH, 16” & 18” CRs, 20” Ride) from the USA for $320 + $450 = $790 (excl. shipping to Oz).
All prices are in Australian dollars (yeah, we get charged a lot over here - although I seem to have gotten a decent deal overall).

Beware of cymbal mutes for crashes. If they sit 9n cymbals for a small period the coating leaves black imprints. Pain in the ass

brett yates you can use any mesh head with Edrums but you’ll have to go in and change the module settings to get the best response
My Remo Silent Stroke bass head got a hole in it almost right away even with a felt beater. I think I had it less than a month before this happened. I'm also tired of having to take off the drum head and having to tune the bass drum each time you switch between a gig and practice. I read that the RTOM Bass Drum Head is not easy to set up. I use dead ringers for the cymbals which couldn't be easier and your still playing real cymbals & they are inexpensive in comparison to the L80's. You can hear the tapping on the metal but it's quiet.
Manufacturers (Roland, etc) recommend against using felt beaters on mesh heads. It's a bit counterintuitive, but a rubber/wood/plastic beater will actually cause less damage to the mesh over time.

I recommend putting on a bit of duct tape on the silent strokes if you have/get them. It makes the heads a lot less bouncy and feels way more real. I use them with the L80’s.

I'm going to agree as far as the Rtom Black Hole heads and disagree as far as cymbal mutes being a strong option on anything other than their price. The heads can be tuned to realistically approximate the tension and characteristics of an acoustic kit while avoid the "trampoline" feel that the SilentStroke (and most other mesh heads) offer. On the other hand, cymbal mutes feel nothing like real cymbals and you will find yourself altering your technique because of it. They're quiet, they're cheap but they don't provide anything approximating an authentic rebound, etc. I will admit that I did keep the Sound off pad on my bass drum, largely because of negative reviews of the Rtom clip on system and how loud the bass drum is with it in place.

It would be very interesting to see a fairly detailed shootout between the Gen16s, L80s, and Quiet Tones, and some muting pads, once all are available.
They sound soooo much better! The zildjians l80/gen16 bell sounds horrible, it's probably the main thing I dislike about them other than the 16"crash sound itself. the sabians sound so true to the acoustic sound we all are used to, especially that bell. I'm just curious as to how quiet they really are. The demo video they have up is of an unmuffled acoustic kit playing along with the "quiet tones", yet the mix sounds really balanced in volumes. It doesn't really give the impression that they are all that quiet.. especially knowing how quiet the l80's are in person. P.s. Thanks for making all these videos!! I can't get enough of them.
In the video of the sabian quiet tone cymbals they actually paired it with the Black Holes!

Not the same price because you can also buy the cymbal mutes with the silent stroke heads,you don't have to buy the L80s so the silent stroke heads are the cheaper option.

Not worth the money, The REMO Silent Stroke Heads are just as good if you tune them and alot less! The Z-L80's are to heavy and dont give great tone. The Z-Gen are a better sounding cymbal.
