Using Zildjian L80s Plus Remo Silent Stroke Heads VS Buying An Electronic Drumset

- My thoughts on Zildjian L80s with Remo Mesh Heads VS buying an electronic drumset for the same price.
It’s a cool combination for practice, the Remo heads are very quiet. Some people think that they are the same as the Roland mesh heads, or even the Alesis mesh heads. That’s not quite true actually. These heads are a very thin one ply mesh head. They are very bouncy, but still have a great feel for practice. The Zildjian L80s great too. The sound is very very quiet for a metal cymbal, it’s not an annoying ting ting sound like you’d get from a Alesis Surge cymbal (they use a thin sheet of plastic right underneath the metal to dampen it) the L80s sound is mostly the attack of the stick, not a ton of tone underneath. This is a result of the sound lowering mods they had to make to the classic acoustic sound less defining. Let’s look at the price: $300-$250 for the cymbal set and about $90 for a set of the Remo mesh heads. If I was in a tough situation, needing to lower my drum volume to practice, this is definitely an option. But the tone of the whole thing is lacking, and you’ll have to take the heads on and off, on and off if you plan on using the set acoustically as well, which would be pretty time consuming. But I’m glad this system is out there. If we look at electronic drumsets at that price point, you’re going to buy a Alesis Nitro, or maybe a DXT400k for a $100 more. So that price for a quieter setup is very fair. The advantage of getting an electronic drumset instead is that you have a dedicated kit just for practice, less hassle. Also it's easy to record, connect to drum software for pro sounds even. Plus an electronic drumset at that price is very portable. I think either option is good, but it's your call depending on your situation.

I love how straight forward your videos are. The topic right in the title with 0 clickbait and good info on drum related stuff. I'm quite new to drumming and i got 95% info on what e-drums to buy from you. Thank you!
Thanks man, I really appreciate that :) I try to keep the BS to a minimum
This video is EXACTLY what I needed, thank you!
perfect!

8:12 Idk why everyone, including you, forgets to mention this benefit 99% of the time, this is honestly the second best thing about E-drums, right after being able to practice at midnight.
Your videos are always great man. They are always clear, lively, and informative, and Im glad I found your channel. Keep it up!
As stated below, everytime i need e-drum related info, you are the go to guy.
Thanks man :) glad you're finding the videos useful. I'm trying to make this channel the video Wikipedia for edrums.
You are growing faster Justin... well done buddy 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks Arlindo! Been working very hard at this channel for like 2 years now. Glad things are starting to pick up speed
Hey, thanks for the videos! They're great. Question... Would putting silent stroke heads in a Rolf e-kit do anything to lower the acoustic volume of hitting the drums? Also, would the triggers work properly? I had an acoustic kit with silent stroke heads that I played in the living room and I recently got a Roland td27 and the "tapping" seems significantly louder acoustically. Wondered if maybe the silent stroke heads (or any others) could reduce that volume.
Hi brother, I love your channel, good content! I was wondering if Remo silent strokes work well with Ddrum red shot triggers? Hope you can help me out. Cheers from México!
I've got a Roland TD-11K kit but finding it hard to find a stage monitor amp that is light weight yet still has enough power to use in live stage application and handle the bass drum heavy funk/ rap music and still have clear cymbals. I'm currently using a Samson XMB 10 pwd mixer with a Peavey SP 2XT 15' + horn but is big, bulky and heavy. What do you suggest???
Justin. Wondering your thoughts. I currently have a Roland td1kv and only play practice to songs. I’ve been looking into switching to a acoustic set with the remo salient stoke and the l80s. Which would you suggest from the two?
Do you need to put the mesh heads on both sides of the acoustic drums? or is it enough to only have one per drum? and do they sell bass drum mesh heads?
How good is it playing with songs using Remo Silent Stroke and Zildjan l80?
Hey Justin, can you point me to a link for that cymbal trigger pad that you showed that clips under the cymbal ? cheers
Hi Justin, I have this kind of problem. I want to take up drumming because i love to drum, but i live in an appartment so i cant play acoustic drums, is edrums a good choice? Thinking of buying the alesis strike kit.
I like to see you do a review of the black hole mesh heads as well look really interesting
Would you recommend the Pearl Export with Rtom Black Hole Mesh Heads together with L80´S..????
Nice vid mate
thanks :)
Hey do you think is a good idea to buy
Tama Club (Jam Mini Shell/ snare and bass drum/ ) +rtom-black-hole + zildjian-l80-low-volume-14-hi-hat .. only bass snare and hi hat to learn drums ? please help
I got both DW performance 3 piece with Sabian Quiet Zone and a TD27! I play the ekit 90% of the time. Still need to make my drum room more quiet to the outside world!
Hey, just got a TD-27. But still thinking if the acoustic set with the silent heads would be a better option. I would be living in an apartment. What are your thoughts on the loudness difference? Thanks!
@@carlotd93 Quiet cymbals are still too loud for an apartment.
I wanna see the Sabina quite tone cymbals
This is exactly what I settled on - mesh heads and l80s, I'll be trying to them out next week, I really dislike rubber cymbals.
perfect!
65 Drums I've just been playing the l80s (low noise acoustic set up), I'm glad that I went this route because I'm loving these cymbals, sound decent, fairly quiet, you're right about the stick attack (hi hats especially) but it's the nature of the beast I suppose.
I really missed the feeling of real cymbals - I realised this when I played these earlier today.
One thing is that they aren't as quiet as rubber cymbals but for real cymbals they are fantastically quiet.
And another plus point is that if I choose to go with a conversion in the future I'm half way there 😀
Love your videos, mate.
I tried the ss and l80 route. Didnt like cymbal feel. Felt mushy is only way I can describe it. Heads were alright. Im actually using one on one of my Roland toms. In other words I went electronic. More control over volume and sounds better. Now I have both full acoustic and edrum sets. Love your vids.
L80 are not the best quiet cymbals. I use Arborea, they are much better. Hi-hats are especially good.
Hey man … after 4 years of this video, which is the most silent e-drum you have tried? Thanks!
Is it possible to have the gold cymbals with proper triggering for electronic kits?
Is pin-tech worth what they ask for there kits?
another great video
Thanks!
I just want to learn to play drums and to jam with friends at home without being too loud for our neighbors. Which would be better?
Good video!
Put a few strips oF gaffers tape on those remo heads and youll get more tone and a better more realistic feal
have you tried the rtom black hole ?
I've been trying to decide for 6 months now if I should buy an Alesis Nitro kit ($450 CDN) or RemoSS/L80 ($360 CAD) for the $100 CB kit I bought at a yard sale. The CB drum kit is way too loud for my small house as is. The only used edrums that ever pop up in my area are Roland TD3s for 400-500.
OldmanPeter what did u decide
Sabian quiet tones are good too. A tad cheaper and a little more high pitch but the bell on the ride sounds better than the l80s
You can go with the Gen 16 and the Onheads.
I literally ranted about this exact dilemma on sweetwater in a short essay. XD
Ronald td 11k vs yamaha dtx 522 vs alesis command2
Hi Justin great video. Question, do say I get an e-kit and play on that for 3-4 years and then buy an acoustic set. How long do you think the adjustment process is for the average drummer and what can I expect?
You won’t be able to develop as a drummer on an e-kit alone. So basically you will just throw away 3 to 4 years out of your life.
@@nestserau i disagree, you can definitely develop as a drummer on a decent e-kit, minus dynamics primarily
Good info
Its always better to play an acoustic set from a devolpement point of view, electric should be last resort or you have enough for both. If you can go l80 and silent stroke that is way way better. also you ccould just have a drum mute pack like vater and the use the l80 cymbals, that way take off the mutes put the real cymbals back on take 5 minutes you can go from real thing to your quite practice set.
justin, what were those cymbal triggers you showed at the 7:15?
it's a Simmons Piezo
Hey Justin on what days do you upload videos?
I wish I knew haha. Whenever I can make one, usually 3 times a week. Every Monday for sure because that's my day off work.
I have a Yamaha dtx400k... What's your thoughts to make it better
buy the yamaha kick tower to use with it, it's like $70 bucks
Other thing with electronic drums is after i practice a song i need to relearn it on my acoustic for couple minutes.. the feel is really different
Yeah it is a different feel. Just like a Roland Keyboard feels different from a Steinway piano. I wish it was identical, but it is what it is
@@65Drums but if its the accoustic model edrums then yeah its acceptable
I’m to broke for both so I just play as loud as I want when I want. My neighbors just say I, good at drumming when the see me in the cul de sac
That's not the only difference between Gen16 and L80. The L80 also has a coating that dampens the volume more and the construction is different.
Also, the RTOM Black Hole is not a comparable alternative, as you'd be looking at 50-80 bucks per pad. And since they go over your drums and have a rim too, you'll have to lower your drums so the pads are level with where you'd set your drums normally.
The RTom is a comparable alternative, it's a mesh head that's designed for practice. That was the point of this video.
Nobody has a video on cymbal mutes besides black hole and l80. just a 60 dollar sp or vater mute back and 250 for the cymbal so 310 even cheaper then silwnt stroke or black holes.
Wish i had all these options few years back...Entry level e-kits were awful and top simply out of reach!Instead of mesh heads I think we had some rubber pads with simply no rebound! No solution whatsoever for cymbals...(:This IS NOW a nice period to study lets take advantage of it:)
Would the silent strokes have that acoustic feeling
You'd have to tape them up first, otherwise they are too bouncy
How about a review on the NFUZD drum heads
+Nick Berger already did a video on it
You forgot to consider the price of the drum shell
This video seems more geared toward the people who already have an acoustic kit and maybe have had a recent change in circumstances (moved to a new apartment, maybe recently had a baby and need to have reduced noise when practicing, etc.). So the cost of the shells wouldn't be a factor for those people.
Speaking for myself, as someone who doesn't own any kind of kit and wants to get into drumming, I'm leaning toward getting an acoustic kit (maybe a Pearl Export EXX) with the L80s and SilentStroke heads. It's a less expensive setup compared to electronic kits that are good quality and have acoustic-sized pads, and obviously would give me the ability to play a gig or just jam out with a real acoustic kit when circumstances allow. Plus it'll last forever if you take care of it, whereas electronic kits will inevitably wear out eventually and there's a greater chance of malfunction when you're dealing with all the extra stuff that goes into making an e-kit work vs. the simple nature of acoustics.
Dude, I've been saving money for a long time.
Let's say that I have the money to buy one of these options.
Roland TD-17KVX or Remo/Zildjian and Benny Greb Sand series cymbals.
(The only time to practice is at night)
And the Benny Greb cymbals are for the weekend, because I play with my band.
What would you advise me?
Aarón Angulo what did u choose?
@@ejj9956 Dude I bought the Remo/ Zildjian bundle and the Meinl Cymbals. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to regret! Those cymbals are out of this world, and the low volume bundle is The best invention for drummers and drum teachers, AWESOME.
Aarón Angulo good to hear... I might just do the same I’ve been hearing great things about that kind of set up
Best acustic with l80s and mesh heads than any middle level electronic drumset. Of course you can still trigger your acustic drumkit and you'll still have an acustic drumset for live with less money
And will last much longer
6:37 :)
Hi, there's also some tama mesh heads out there. I did my first review of those (should have revisited your how to review vid!) ua-cam.com/video/L09qAOy4zpo/v-deo.html
Thanks for the Simmonds info, think buying some triggers is my likely next move.
You were right about the silentstroke preconceptions.. After the td11 snare surface I was worried it was going to be very similar and although I watched some reviews I avoided it and took a chance.
Sweet :) thanks for the tip
I feel like there is better options for under 500
Now there are yes. But I made this video a few years ago
@@65Drums Now that you are here, do you think that its better to buy used or new roland kit with like 400-600€ that has small mesh or rubber pads or The same price range alesis or millenium kits that are seemingly "better" in a sense that they have bigger drums and perhaps independent snares or hi hats. Making the decision soon?
Isn't it 80% softer than 80% the volume? Correct me if im wrong, about 1:35 onw
80% less volume compared to a full cymbal
