  • There's an ocean of different brands mesh drum-heads out there, but there are only 3 types: 1ply, 2ply, and 3ply. What are the differences between them? And which type of mesh heads are the best?

    I prefer 0 ply to be honest, they are so incredibly quiet its almost like they arent even there. The rebound is a bit mediocre compared to the other options but if you're looking for a way to play silently in an apartment or something you really cant beat it. Not to mention the things cost virtually nothing at all so they are great for beginners who arent sure if they want to dump a bunch of money into a kit.
    Ok then.

    Great video! And good timing for me as I'm in the process of adding more mesh head pads to my TD11 kit. I currently have Pintech's 14" snare and 10" tom with the 1-ply Reaction heads. Have you tried those? I'm curious what your thoughts are about them.

    Just getting back into drumming after a 30 year lay off. Have an analog set -gonna go with the Black Hole because of the ease of putting on and back to playing normally. The Black Hole does have more sound/tone-more realistic. I am buying pieces as I go-I have 2 L-80 Z Crash/Ride and a crash. But I think I will go with the cymbal mute going forward - I have that on the high hats Z-works great!! Great videos, thank you!

    Hey Justin - Great video as usual. Have a question. I really like the feel of the Roland digital 14" snare pad and wondered what mesh pad would have a similar feel that I can put on a 10". I think Roland only sells it in a 14" head. Thanks!

    Great video! What would you recommend for a massive sanctuary in a church where the reverb is just out of this world? I'm currently using their really archaic Yamaha electric kit that is super janky and the triggers are nearly dead or very delayed. I'd like to bring my gigging set and use L80s and some sort of mesh head for a tolerable acoustic sound. I'm not looking into triggering systems, I'm just interested in having it acoustic without using expensive iso booths. Acoustic treatment in the church is practically impossible. I can care less about feel, I just wonder about the tone. I've even tried using normal heads with Hot Rods and playing very low, but that doesn't really work for this church setting. I thought about the idea of close micing silent stoke heads but that's going to be annoying to set up every Sunday before the service. What are your thoughts?

    1 ply remo silent stroke for the resonant head and either Drum tec Design series 2 ply or the Roland / Remo Power ply for the Top is the best balance between ambient volume and rebound with amazing triggering results.

    FYI to drummers converting Acoustic to Electric.... my experience with drum triggers.... I didn't find that the thicker multiple mesh heads worked well with shell mounted "Helesson" triggers. I found the single ply pearl heads to work best with those triggers.
    I know Jason uses center head triggers on his snare and bass, and historically Jobecki shell triggers on his toms
    I have observed others who used multiple mesh heads (Jobeki) with Jobecki shell mounted triggers.
    I have observed others complain that Jobecki triggers were "Too Hot" when used with Roland controllers.
    ////
    Therefore, I would think mesh head thickness to trigger is not a linear comparison. Its relative to trigger manufacturer and trigger mount location. Jobecki does not provide a potentiometer for its piezo like helensson does, therefore the only way to reduce a hot trigger issue with Jobeki might be to deploy thicker mesh heads. They use potentiometers to trim magnetically induced voltage on electric guitars, it might make good sense therefore that the same could be accomplished by impact induced voltage occurring from a piezo.
    ////
    As an example.....
    My bass setup was the most difficult, Its comprised of a Remo silent stroke and a Pentech trigger. I had to move the trigger 3 times in order to get the desired sound. I used a wooden block (hardwood) with an elevator bolt to attach the trigger (provided height adjustment) the best trigger location for that setup was about 25mm to 40mm away from the center of the drum head. The setup uses a very dense piece of foam mounted between the piezo and the drum head. The piezo is mounted upon the large, flat end of the elevator bold.

    Hey Justin, how about Prism mesh heads? I just picked up a set of "blemished" white 3 ply for my td-15 setup, and I'm enjoying them so far, compared to the Roland heads. It seems they're similar to the Real Feel heads, but available in the U.S., so save on some shipping costs.

    I have a comment only about Billy Blast heads. I don't question there quality or volume of stick hits, but I've owned two of his drum heads, and the 12", 3-ply, "snare" head doesn't seem to sit "down" on the shell, which makes the rim sit higher up from the head (it fits the shell but there isn't the beveled edge that comes on most acoustic (or Roland ) heads . Yes, I did adapt, but it is still odd to me.

    Hi, how would you compare the triggering sensitivity from a Goedrum 1 thick ply to a Drum-tec Real Feel? Which one do you think causes less mistriggering? I'm interested in Goedrum mainly for feeling, and then also for price because RF's cost more than double, but I would like to know if it will trigger well. Thanks.

    I was thinking of the 3 ply drum tec real feel head on the snare ( i own it and it feels pretty similar to a snare) and 2 ply mesh heads on the toms, because toms should have more rebound naturally no? the 3 ply real feel mesh heads on the toms feel too much like snares

    Hey Justin I know I’m super late watching this video but I gotta question for you: I have a pintech Phoenix kit and the 20 inch bass drum that’s acoustic electric and has a single ply head I believe and it triggers terrible, I constantly get double triggering especially dying double bass runs or “galloping” (patterns of three that are 8th note triplets basically) and it always double triggers to groups of four or five when I only hit it three times, it sometimes does this during double strokes (slide technique) and for every two I get three hit, how do I get rid of it? I’ve done everything in the Roland td-12 I can in the way of trigger settings as well as moved the trigger back and forth on the head and moved the center foam pad back and forth till I got it close but still double triggers bad. I’m not necessarily worried about sound, just triggering, would a two play head be better or should I go three ply or would the real feel from drum tech be better for triggering? Everybody feel free to throw suggestions, this is my first electronic acoustic drumset I paid a ton of money for it and just want the d**n bass drum working properly, whatcha got for me?

    It is what it is man. I need to go with 682drums for there conversion kit for obvious reasons. But as for mesh heads. I'll start with there's then go from there. Out of all the reviews on conversion kits for Alesis. 682drums just looked like the best option. One huge question. I bought the Griffin double kick pedals on eBay. I'm not show if it was because I had no experience or its because of the Alesis real head being more like a brick wall then a kick drum. The entire pedal kept getting loose. Is this because of how stiff Alesis real heads are? I tightened the parts . EVERYWHERE and put duck tape on the left side. Those screws would get loose and then it was horrible. The tape stopped the problem. Would a mesh conversion eliminate the problem?

All the heads from Roland I've seen on-line are only the MH-2, 2 ply head.
