I just literally subscribed and that's the first thing that I noticed. Lol.
During the summer my lawn looks ‘fine’ but during the winter and after rain showers it gets very spongy ( there’s no moss). I’ve aerated and scarified it over the years and recently bought an auger bit and began the process to try and fix the constant drainage problem of my small (30m squared) lawn, it wasn’t long before I was hitting something solid which turned out to be an old paving slab, I then unearthed a further 9. There appears to be a layer of dolomite throughout with a few inches of poor top soil which is of a clayish texture and full of stones. In some areas the dolomite is sitting on top of a layer of polythene covering the clay soil beneath. Additionally after a few hours the holes I’ve dug become waterlogged. Should I just bite the bullet and get all the dolomite removed, get a French drain installed and a few tons of quality top soil or can the dolomite be left and just remove the top soil replacing it with better?
Can't beat a good drain, assuming you have a good fall and more importantly somewhere for that water to go !
Getting a herringbone system fitted next week so hopefully will finally be on the way to getting a perfect base to start a lawn following your advice and tips
If you have a lawn that is full of weeds and meadow grass, should you kill the lawn first?
Looking superb.. cant wait for spring!!!

We did this, about now last year. By the time you got it killed off you might have missed the window
Great video.
People shouldn't be afraid to try this especially on a small piece of grass like this. I do love planting from seed you know what you're getting, Especially when you make sure you buy a quality seed.
I think with my videos doing this, there will be a lot of dead lawns this spring 😂
@@Premier_lawns_official Timing is everything when seeding. I did my renovation starting in the middle of August Is in the Pacific Northwest. If I had so many weed grasses that I killed it all off and started over. I did the same with a scarifier and shredded it . I re-seeded with RPR perennial rye. We had some snow for about a week but it came out like a champ !
@@richardharwell perfect. I think in the UK 100 percent PRG isn't that great for lawns as it thins out of winter. Have you found this?
@@Premier_lawns_official The new RPR has done well so far . It looks like it did in the Fall, maybe a little thicker . If it thins I'll over seed with fine fescue and Chewing Red Fescue.

Could you do this in feb. or march and utilize the spring rain or would it be too cold still. For my average temp is about 50F-55F in march.

Would you put the fleece on towards the last week

The fleece speeds it up a bit, you could wait an extra week or to and not need it.

Hey Robbie. Did you kill old lawn first before scarifying? I’m planning on doing mine next spring. I was going to kill it, run the rotorvator over it, topsoil and seed.
Fun fact: there is NO AERATING MACHINE available in Austria. I've tried to find one to buy, or rent, or a someone to do it ... nothing.
The only think I could come up with is boots with nails in them.
If the lawn isn't that big try one of these methods ua-cam.com/video/VRf2P3Q68Xo/v-deo.html

I live in Melbourne, Australia. I started a new lawn at the beginning of December 2021, which is the beginning of our summer. The grass is growing really well but the weeds are growing just as well too. What recommendations do you have for controlling weeds on a young lawn? I’ve been walking around the lawn every couple of days to pull them out by hand. I’m a bit hesitant to use any weed killing products because the roots are still trying to establish themselves.
I wouldn't recommend using any weed killer for around 6 months to let it get established.
@@Premier_lawns_official Awesome. Thank you for the advice.
Am I supposed to say 1st??? 🤣
Getting me excited for spring now Robbie 🤗..........that grass was fantastic!
Thanks, Richard :) I guess you are first!
@Premier Lawns would you use garden fleece on an early spring overseeding project? To protect from cold mornings and speed up germination.
Will the existing lawn deteriorate from reduced light?
It would 100 percent help 👍

Thank you. This is a great video. I have a lot of clover and weeds in my garden. Will scarifying and aerating tackle this or do I need to do more in the way of preparation to tackle thick areas of clover. What is the best time of year to do this work. There are so many weeds so not sure how to make a start. I have been putting it off for a while.
Great time to make a start on it now
Great video. Very motivating. Anyone out there know a source for dwarf rye grass seed in the southeast US or the US period? Didn't find any on a quick internet search. Just see the tall kind.
You should be able to source dwarf rye near you. That's strange
If I topdress and overseed in early March do you think I should use horticultural fleece?
It's to early to do it then
Great video. I have low spots and bumps in the lawn. If I reseed and then build up low spots with top soil using lute will this prevent seeds coming through. Thanks Robbie
No, the weeds will find a way. We killed the lawn off first
What if your lawn is infested with weeds and other unwanted grasses? Kill it off with RoundUp?
Hi Robbie have you any idea why my newly seeded lawn (Sept) 100% rye grass has been steadily developing yellow patches and bare spots ? It’s mainly happing on the shadier side of the lawn. Thanks
That's your problem, rye grass looks great in the season, come the winter its not so great. Probably needs fed to
If I may, if rye is yellow, you need iron. Spray Liquid iron, it will work fast, then follow it with ironite pellets…
We have had a new sewage treatment plant in our garden and it’s trashed! Lawn neglected by previous owner and very stoney/flinty and not a huge amount of decent topsoil. Would you apply the same principle here or follow a different process? Obviously will wait until moisture in ground.
There was a decent amount of good soil in this lawn before we started. If there wasn't I wouldn't have done it this way...
@@Premier_lawns_official Any tips?
@Chris Sanders these are very general tips, it's usually easy and cheaper to bring soil and raise it up and put some sort of edge around it
Than to dig the old soil out as landfill is expensive. Ideally you will want at least 8" of good soil compacted down to 6"
@@Premier_lawns_official Yeah I think that's where I'm headed. Would you remove the old truf that remains or just give it a deep scarification?
@@chrissanders55 if that's the type of thing you are doing, best practise would be to strip off the old lawn, you could hire a turf cutter for the day...
What was step one? Remove old lawn, but what is that machine you use? What is it doing?
Did you weed the grass before using the scarifier? Or does the scarifier destroy the weeds too?
Would it be possible to know what you charged for this pal ? , thanks
What time of year was this???????
September 👍
great video - unrelated but can i ask what is your opinion on robot lawnmowers?
They are probably the future. Though don't leave as good a finish as an ordinary mower
I think you can still see the footprints when it's all grown in. Otherwise top marks 👍
Thanks 😊👍
Great video, Its exactly what I need at the moment, A question please, When re-seeding is it better to use/buy soil or, you know used leaves and mixed with soil. Hojas de tierra its called wher i live.

Brilliant Robbie, really useful information. Can I ask what grass seed fertiliser you use? I have bought some which states to use on the top soil 3-5 days before seeding whereas the type you used was applied the same day. Also in another video you used liquid seaweed on the seed, do you recommend this still?
Thank you
You can never go wrong to some seaweed
If it was me I would follow the instructions on the packet 👍
@@Premier_lawns_official thank you.
Had driveway done, concrete base around edges so grass on top of those areas dies. Any tips?
More soil.
Hi Robbie - I am going to kill my lawn off and start over due to amount of weed grasses, wondering if it's better to spray it while the grasses are longer and let them die off before scarifying or should I cut it down first before spraying (Glyphosate). Thanks
It doesn't really matter to be honest
A good professional job . No bother to Premier Lawns , the grass looks very healthy and green , Roll on Spring .
Just one question , would a shady variety of grass seed really make a difference to shady areas of my lawn . I have some areas next to and in the shade of a garage that never seemed to really look as lush or thick as the rest of the lawn . Now , at this time of year , with everything being mostly dormant this area looks rather thin .
Thanks in advance .
Most lawns, especially lawns that have lots of rye look very thin this time of year
@@Premier_lawns_official Yes , you are correct . I redone it with a rye mix and repaired the same area a bit too late last year . Thanks again .
Another great video Robbie! Keeps me on my toes but still loads of snow outside. My plan: as soon as the ground temperature is 6 degrees i will scarifying and than apply some lawn sand, two weeks after, maybe first mow, aerate and apply some topsoil…
Sounds like a great plan 👍😊
How many bags of topsoil per Square Meter?
Depends on the lawn and how level it is, I think we used around 10 bags
Your lawn videos help me relax after my stock market research. Also, they have helped me grow my new lawn.
The one thing I didn't do is level it with a rake but I did aerate first, then seed, then stomp over lawn with flat soled sandals (lawn is very small), covered lightly with topsoil and watered. Now it looks pretty good. A few thin spots though. My lawn gets almost no sun it's totally shaded which makes it hard but it's actually doing not bad. Fescue is what I used too
My "lawn" before was all moss mats 😆 🤣 so I literally just pulled up bags and bags worth of moss, and grew a lawn after
@@christalball93_ Happy to help!

I deleted St Augustine for Bermuda and annual rye will be the bridge this winter , ur videos taught me alot about seeding

Hello Robbie, awesome turnaround. Did you take the tarp of every day to water it or does the moist just go through it?

@@matthiasmaes4857 I would always recommending waiting until the frosts go away
Did you spray weed killer all over the lawn before starting the scarification?
We did indeed
That’s for the honest reply but it’s a shame to know! I want to say up front that I honestly do like your channel, but, Surely the ‘perfect lawn’ is not worth the destruction the poison causes above and below the surface. You should educate your clients and help them understand the benefit ‘weeds’ like daisy’s, butter cups etc and other naturally occurring wild flowers. are to supporting bio-diversity in their area! The harmful affects the poisonous spray has on microbes, worms, beetles in the soil is another storey altogether. You should seriously consider putting away all nasty chemicals and work with nature, not against it. As I said I do like your channel but the weed killers are just the same lazy old ways of landscaping from the prior generations. A lawn with clover, yellow rattle, self healer, daisies etc is far more attractive than bleach green monoculture grass which is 100% useless to flies, bees, birds, insects etc.
@@PatrickMeskell this is a lawn channel primarily. What you’ve described is a paddock. I think you’d be surprised what lives in and under a healthy lawn.
