I Leveled my Lawn using ONLY items from Home Depot

  • Plan on LEVELING your Lawn? Watch this.
In this video I cover how I used only a few simple items from Home Depot to level my lawn.
The secret to a perfect looking lawn is making it FLAT.
Is your entire lawn or areas of the lawn filled with dips, ruts, low spots, and high spots? When your lawn isn’t level it can make it look terrible and lead to damage and injury due to the bumps making you twist your ankles and scalp your lawn with your mower. Good thing is, you can level your lawn yourself with a few simple items from Home Depot such as a landscape rake, push broom, sand, soil, and a gorilla cart or wheel barrel.
A level lawn also leads to a healthier and easier to maintain turf. It will result in a higher quality cut because your mower won’t scalp the lawn. Not to mention, mowing over a bumpy surface is uncomfortable and can cause injury to your ankles. Low spots are of particular concern because as the tires pass over them, the level of the mower blade also drops, plunging it into the higher spots and cutting the grass too low in that specific spot leading to scalping of the lawn. The last advantage to a level lawn is drainage. Holes and low spots tend to collect water in pools, which increases chance of lawn fungus.
Basic equipment needed to level your lawn lawn leveling rake or lawn leveler , lawn lute , lawn level drag or any other kind of lawn level tool, in this video I use a landscape rake . Also you will need a gorilla cart or wheel barrel to haul around the thousands of pounds of material. If you are looking to get more specific tools for the job such a rake designed just for leveling your lawn I will leave a link below.

Nice to see a sand leveling video that doesn't involve a giant dump truck full of USGA spec sand. The only place I could find with it near me says they require a minimum of 10 cubic yards. There's probably some landscaping supply places around with adequate sand though. I just read an article about golf courses using a mix of 80% sand and 20% mushroom soil or peat moss. Mushroom soil/compost sounds like great stuff, since it's weed free and has some organic matter and water retention properties. Looks like my local Lowe's has some 1 cu ft bags for about $4.50, doesn't sound too expensive to try it out in some areas.

Great video George. I'm not a big fan of potting mix in the lawn, mainly due to the white beads they use for moisture purposes. Those things take forever to breakdown. I rather use topsoil. It's generally cheaper, though there can be more ckunks. I find the "generic" bags from Home Depot and Lowe's work best. I used a landscape rake to level out my lawn for my renovation last season. If you have big piles of dirt and sand, the rake is super handy and knocking them down. Really informative video!

I REALLY love all the details of your video! Thank you. I have some questions to help me get better looking lawn. Before seeing YOUR video, I bought and laid down enough bagged topsoil to cover my 15-1600 sqft front lawn. Ask you mentioned.. I have been FIGHTING all kinds weeds ever since. However, 2 weeks ago plucked and sprayed weed/grass lawn killer. Now.. I want follow your recommendations while starting over with zoysia. Can I 1st level with just sand? 2nd then layer with potting soil? To finish with seeding then rolling with a lawn roller?
*I’m under the impression that bagged or truck delivered topsoil will give me a FOREVER fight with weeds? I live in middle/lower Virginia.

Feral hogs tore up my yard and the ravines and divots and ginormous ruts they left are godawful...can't walk thru the yard without breaking your ankle...and it's even super difficult to ride the mower thru it!
