  • I figured out the fastest way to grow grass from seed and it amazed me
    I killed off a section of grass to test out different methods on how to grow a new lawn from seed. We covered some of the seeds with
    Plastering sand / sharp sand
    Peat free compost
    High-quality topsoil topdressing mix
    A section with no covering
    Lastly, we covered all the sections in horticultural fleece.
    00:00 intro
    00:02 The best way to grow grass from seed
    00:19 What is best to cover new grass seed with
    00:32 How we prepared the ground for this test
    01:32 The materials we will be using to grow the grass seed in
    02:39 How to prepare the ground for seed
    05:17 Grass seed germination time lapse
    09:12 First cut on my new lawn
    09:52 Cutting my new lawn with the reel mower
    10:10 Final thoughts
    This project was filmed for 30 days timelapse. To try and ascertain what is the best product to grow grass seed in. It was a big project to undertake, with huge amounts of footage to record and edit. I would like to thank my Dad Chris for helping me out, he didn't do too bad for someone that is 77!

    Very useful video Robbie. I've used loam, 70/30 top dressing and nothing when refurbing and have always had the best results with the loam - even if only 2l per m. Never used the fleece though but might give it a go having clearly seen the quicker germination in your vid. Very handy to see the impact bird activity has when uncovered.

I've never covered newly-sown seed and wondered exactly what difference it would make. Now I know. Also, having used topsoil and compost raked into the seed I was very interested to know what difference there'd be between the two. This has been very helpful.

    Not a golf green as I originally thought but in fact a great experiment. Many thanks and well done to you and your team.

      @@Premier_lawns_official Judgine by the facebook group, I think a few people might like to see you turn a patch into a golf green. If nowt else, it sounds like some fun :)

      @@petertr2000 I can't see that working as I didn't do anywhere enough prep to make that work. The light would also be an issue too unfortunately

    Thank you! I have two weddings (my 2 eldest daughters) this summer and I need to do my lawns so badly! My issue is Japanese knotweed, moss, and ground squirrels! Also chickens but I’m going to try and contain them.
    Have you ever made a large area where you made your own sod? Im debating that. Just marking off a flat area, laying down tarp, mixing bags of potting soil, mulch, sand and and perlite and then laying a thin layer over the tarp, laying bird netting over that and then another thin layer of the mixture- then sprinkling the grass seed on top and watering in. Then I debated putting a visqueen cover over that to further deter birds. After a good month cutting it into strips, preparing my area and then rolling it out to there 😂

    We’ve been using clear polythene on top of down seed for the last couple of years on lots of patches big and small in a garden we’ve had to fix. Acts like a greenhouse and keeps moisture in. Grass grows really fast. Hold it down with tent pegs. Got a few people doing the same and all had similar results.

    • @honestmcgyver
      @honestmcgyver Рік тому

      Ps we’ve even done it in peak summer and all you need to do is peel the polythenes back a couple of times a day if it’s really hot, mist it with the hose pipe and peg back down

    Really impressive, scientific, methodical approach Robbie - Great stuff.
    One question for you - how was the sunlight across the patch? I noticed the sanded section was closest to the house - was that section in more shade than the rest?

    • @Premier_lawns_official
      @Premier_lawns_official  2 роки тому +3

      Good question! It was, but to be honest with the low sun most of it was in the shade a lot anway.
      I was going to do it in the middle of the field but it can get very wet there....
