I get confused as to whether i should put topsoil down before i seed or after or should i do both? Great videos even if i am late to them 👍 i smashed the like button 👌👌👍
Great work Robbie. I've have a bit of saga here re lawn and just wondering what you reckon. I dug out the old mess of a lawn last April and I bought a tiller and tilled completely as I thought the soil was a bit compact so did the full tilling to 4-6 inches. I sprayed roundup before I seeded (number 1 seed mix of 45% Creeping Red Fescue, 45% Chewings Fescue, 10% Highland Browntop as lockdown meant everyone was closed at the time so I bought online from a supplier). Half the reason for the full tilling was with lockdown I had lots of time! I seeded and preseed fert in mid May. Watered etc and had good growth - but the big issues was that I got huge weed growth - which I guess I could have handled with an autumn weed killer once the lawn was established in September - but I also got loads of clumps of the wrong grass - invasive grass I guess and I know you can't easily get that out bar digging it all out. It was the grass that produces seeds on its stems and throws out runners each side - not sure what it's called but it might be familiar to you? From reading online after I guess now that the tilling brought up dormant seeds etc. Anyway. I decided rather than spending 200 hours digging out all the clumps - I started and I worked out from doing a bit just how long it would take and how much of a pain it was - that I'd just start again. Your decision to kill it all and start again was the tipping point by the way! I've sprayed round up at this stage - grass is dying - but my big question is how much of the dead growth do I need to get out - and is there a danger that the clumps with the seeds will grow again as cutting very low/scarifying will drop some of the seeds? Like does the dead growth impede the seed - I know the seed will generally grow once it gets to earth - but does the remaining dead grass hinder it or indeed with what you have left there will it not show up or cause a thatch problem? Thanks Robbie and any other advice re my story would be appreciated as I really don't think I want to go for a third time! It is thankfully only 100m2 so it is manageable and as I near the South Coast my understanding is that I can seed until well into October?
U should be able to seed to that time, however if you have an early frost it may impede your plans. Something to remember is one years weeds seed equals 4 years weeds. That's nature for you. Should be a lot handier for you next time around. The key is to scarify down to just below the thatch layer.
@@Premier_lawns_officialYou're up early answering us Robbie! In my case I'm not as worried about the weeds as I could control them with chemicals when it comes to it - it's more the "wrong" grass, the coarse grass that seems to produce seeds that I'm worried about as I can't remove that easily. From looking online it seems to be infested with annual meadow grass. Thanks for all your advice and help in general by the way!
@@Premier_lawns_official Maybe I'll just go with tarmac so!!! All joking aside, what happens to the dead grass now in your video? Does it not show up or cause issues in terms of seeding over it?

Hi there Robbie, I’m thinking of killing of my lawn and starting again! Can you tell me what I use to kill the grass and how long after before I can start preparing for reseed. Many thanks in advance. David
Hey Robbie, I was wondering if you could advise me. I have a pretty nice lawn with hardly any weeds. As a result of redoing our patio that goes around our lawn I now need to raise the height of our lawn by like 2-3cm, I’ve bought topsoil and ready to the job but I’m not sure if I need to kill off the old lawn or just cover it over with topsoil and seed a new lawn ontop? Could you please advise. Great videos. Thanks Ben
Do you think that the old lawn would grow through and affect the new higher lawn or because I’m completely smothering the lawn in topsoil it will kill the old lawn?
Great videos mate ... in what order should you approach getting a poor lawn into good order if it has lots of weed, high and low areas, is compacted, has thatch, moss, and dry areas under stress? up the mighty reds for tomorrow! hoping kloppo can do it again! : )
@@Premier_lawns_official This is such a great video ...has ALL the steps clearly explained and easy to understand the process... looking forward to seeing how it comes along! : )
Robbie, just something bugging me on this one. You mention you laid the lawn on a 70% soil / 30% sand mix, but from what I have seen the 70/30 mixes available are 70% sand/ 30% soil. What am I missing here?
If there's bricks and rubble under the lawn like there is under new builds, (indeed under any lawn attached to a property that was once a new build)) is it better to dig out the rubble nearest the surface to help with aerating by machine / long-handled fork in the future or just level on top? Might need a significant raising of the level and that's a lot of topsoil. It annoys me every spring and autumn when I aerate [with the long handled fork]. Would rubble underneath a lawn cause damage to aerator hollow tines?
@@Dluger123 My drying green has been there since 1926. It's quite compacted by now :D but most annoying is when I'm aerating with a garden fork and hit what I assume is rubblew. One of the drying poles at the corner broke end of last year so I had to change where the line is roped. It's shocking how quickly it has compacted where the new line is.
Hi Robbie, enjoy your videos. Can you tell me which sand to use for boggy areas in my garden. I figured i would aeriate the lawn, then throw sand over the top to break up the clay/soil. Thank you.

@@legendhero99 that is what I meant, poa seeds last up to 4 years

Great video and advice Robbie.
Could you suggest a reasonable aerator for a diyer...rather than the manual fork type hole aerator's ??
There isn't such a thing as far as I know
@Premier Lawns Robbie how long did you wait after killing the old lawn before seeding a new one? -currently planning on dousing mine in roundup and starting again and wondered how long
2 or 3 weeks
Hi Robbie , great video. I have a very good back lawn that is slightly bumpy and has only minor low spots . Would it create a mess now if I attempted to level with topsoil , as the dew seems to be present all day long . I am scared to chance aeration/scarification as I think it may be to far into September. Am I right or wrong or simply a coward .Looking forward to seeing the finished article. Thanks again .
I'm still doing plenty of sending. I will stop at the end of the month

Hi there Robbie, I’m thinking of killing of my lawn and starting again! Can you tell me what I use to kill the grass and how long after before I can start preparing for reseed. Many thanks in advance. David
Roundup and 2 or 3 weeks then you are good to go.
@@Premier_lawns_official thank you.
Hey Robbie,
I was wondering if you could advise me. Thanks Ben
Best job there would be to lift the old lawn first
Do you think that the old lawn would grow through and affect the new higher lawn or because I’m completely smothering the lawn in topsoil it will kill the old lawn?
@@bvisual2864 the problem with smothering the old lawn, has it breaks down it will cause uneven growth.

Brilliant video Robbie, is this something that could be done in late Feb
Andy it would depend if you get frosts then. I couldn't we get frosts in Belfast right up into may
Hi Robbie, as roundup is expensive is there any other total weed killer I could use to kill the lawn ?
Any weed killer that contains glyphosate 360 will do it

Great videos mate ... in what order should you approach getting a poor lawn into good order if it has lots of weed, high and low areas, is compacted, has thatch, moss, and dry areas under stress? up the mighty reds for tomorrow! hoping kloppo can do it again! : )
Lots going on, plenty to get you going on. Soil the low areas and aerate to wake up the lawn

Best to go up. Put a nice edge in, sleepers work well and raise the height up 6-8"
I'm in the same boat Frank, going to edge it off next year, lawn is one year old, and raise it next year.
I like that palette trick!
I got an automatic water timer that goes on my spicket. This way I can set it to water 15 minutes at intervals of 3 to 4 hours While I am at work.

Having decent topsoil makes such a difference to the finished job. Grass is much greener and establishes quickly. IMHO.
