I remember seeing this show in Madison all three nights (quarters, semis, and finals). I can tell you, the entire crowd knew that finals was a great performance for these guys, and it was clear early in the show. They absolutely cranked it up a notch or two - again, the crowd knew it, and we all absolutely loved it (at least two massive standing o's for them that night). They moved up a spot from quarters/semis into finals (7th to 6th place), and were only .3 from catching 5th place. One of the most memorable 'catching fire at the right time' performances ever for me. Also, that brass line was underappreciated - that was some difficult music, and those guys were just on point!

Courtney, this show was my second year marching with Madison and ended up marching 5 with them and it was the most informative and impactful years of my life. It prepared me for a career in the military and now as a filmmaker. The brotherhood shared cannot be compared. I've loved watching your reaction videos because it gets me pumped to see someone enjoying them, and once I saw you reviewing JCS from '99, I didn't hesitate. This was my favorite year and show I ever marched and watching this brought back a FLOOD of memories and brought a few tears to my eye seeing your reaction. SO happy that our performance that warm August night 21 years ago excited you like that. That's why we did what we did. Year in, and year out.

Madison Scouts hold a special place in my heart as they were the first “big corps” that I ever saw when they toured the west coast in 1994. I literally thought it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. At the time, as a sax player, I never thought I’d be able to do drum corps, but a couple years later, I learned a brass instrument and joined Pacific Crest (while they were still in their infancy). @Courtney Coulston , I’ve really enjoyed watching all of your DCI reactions as it reminds me of the sense of awe that I felt the first time I experienced it myself. I’m glad to let you know that the sense of awe never totally goes away even as your knowledge of the activity increases. Since my career is teaching 10 - 12 year olds how to play band (and string) instruments, I can’t wait to see a student that started with me as a beginner, play on the field with one of these groups. Also, as a music educator, obviously I have to offer to answer any questions about drum corps or music that you might have.

Thanks for watching. Your videos came up on my feed a few days ago and it has been good to reminisce about my time in the corps. 1999 was my second to last year in the corps (1996-2000) and this horn line was probably the best overall that I played with. Regarding your placement question, there are several factors that contributed to the lower placement of the Scouts in particular between 1995 and about 2001. The first was that DCI changed the scoring system in the early 90s to weight more of the scoring toward a category they called "general effect." This category was drastically weighted toward the colorguard and visual elements of the show. Scouts, at least at this time, did not have a very strong colorguard (you can see drops and ticks in this video). Additionally, the trend at this time was moving away from the military tradition (where the visual assessment was more concerned with ticks - or inaccuracies in timing and movement) and more toward pageantry like that found in Bands of America, which is largely focused on a lot of motion and movement, props, story, etc. Madison Scouts were slow on the uptake in this trend. Our footwork was second to none but our drill was written in the style of the 1970s and 80s corps. Caveliers, Blue Devils, and Santa Clara were the trend setters of this time period. In addition to these issues, Madison Scouts leadership under Scott Stewart at this time were very outspokenly critical of scoring in general and how the competitive elements of DCI were being weaponized against smaller corps. Essentially, DCI was funneling money to the winning corps and intentionally trying to shrink the number of corps in the system. Dan Atkinson and other DCI leadership were trying to turn DCI into a small set of traveling "super corps" and they have largely succeeded over the last several decades. There used to be well over 1000 corps and now there are only a few dozen. They intentionally destroyed what used to be a widespread educational activity for youth across the globe and turned it into a profit machine for a select handful of kids. Scott Stewart and the teaching staff engaged in a lot of active protest to this movement in what were probably unproductive ways - not going to judges critique or/and passive-aggressive interactions with the judging pool in DCI. As a result, the judges frequently engaged in retaliatory scoring of the Madison Scouts. This was more than performative because this cut into the corps budget (as DCI had attached show payouts to placement in order to destroy smaller corps by making them go bankrupt). Scott Stewart was later removed by the board and replaced with a revolving door of various directors and show coordinators in the 2000s, but a lot of damage was done to the corps through this process despite what was the ethical position of Stewart and the Scouts. The corps is still recovering financially from this era and simply doesn't have the talent draw that it used to during this period. Sometimes you can be on the right side of history and still lose literally and figuratively.

I highly recommend their 1995 show, although the audio quality for all 1995 and 1996 shows is not the best. Their 1995 program is widely considered one the the most entertaining shows in DCI history from a musical standpoint, and it was the show that got me hooked on DCI when I was in high school and I accidentally stumbled across DCI recordings.

Today all competitive hornlines play on brass instruments in the key of B flat and mellophones in F. But before 2000 all hornlines used bugles in the key of G. They had certain design features that made them extremely loud. So if you notice that hornlines sound louder in these older shows, it is because they are playing G bugles.

I, too, like these older shows, when it was just the music and the marching. Nowadays, everybody has to do some big production, and there has to be a gimmick of some sort that I don't much care for. Madison was always a crowd favorite mostly, in my opinion, because while they were rarely in contention for a championship NOBODY "out-louded" them. (I was hoping to provide an even better example of that by suggesting the 2001 show, but sadly it isn't posted here.) In 1998, I heard this corp perform a concert in a smallish community college auditorium, where they did NOT use their "inside voices". I was in the 4th row center stage, and it felt like the sound waves should've had my hair blowing back as if I were riding in a convertible. It was probably the closest to heaven I'll ever get lol.

If you notice a difference in the sound and power of the Corps it's because they are playing bugles pitched in the key of G. This would be (for the most part) the last year for G bugles as in 2000 the Corps went to multi-key horns (read conventional band instruments).

The amount of work they put in is crazy. They spend there whole summer doing this. 14 hour days during the summer, sleeping in school gyms and on a bus. During the school year they travel to practice too, i believe once a month. It’s insane. Look up top tens or just tops of DCI. You will see some crazy stuff!

courtney would sure love madison scouts 95-98 eh? some of the most crowd-friendly shows ever.
they got 6th this year. you should start guessing what corps place, after you watch the shows! would be interesting to hear how much more accurate you get with it over time. i loved the 5th through 7th placements that year, with glassmen (toledo, ohio) in 5th, madison scouts jumping up to 6th on finals night, and a really really great blue knights (denver, colorado) corps, still the highest scoring one in their history, falling from 5th on quarterfinals, to 6th on semifinals, and 7th on finals. all three shows were fantastic, 1999 is one of my favorite seasons. it was the least season where every corps was still technically on 'bugles,' instruments in the key of G, instead of the instruments that are used nowadays, Bb horns (or F for mellophones), which are the same ones that people use in bands and orchestras. the sound was 'brassier' in 1999 and earlier, if such a subjective comment is fair. pretty amazing that so many great hornlines from 1999 and earlier happened on instruments that the members ONLY play during drum corps, as opposed to year-round.

True story: my dad was a drummer and introduced me to DCI as a kid. Madison Scouts were his favorite corps. He passed in July 1999. The day we laid him to rest coincidentally DCI was having a competition in my city. It’s normal for the corps to practice at the local high schools. Well…God must’ve been conspiring to lift my spirits that day because when we got back from the cemetery, I found out from one of my band mates that Madison was practicing at one of our rival schools. With the permission of my mother I went to see them practice this show. It is not one of their legacy shows per se….but for me? This show holds special meaning. I know Dad would’ve lost his everloving shit on that big company front and that power chord at 10:48 lol.

Those were the damn days. Lol. Just line up, execute, and blow the walls down. I saw this show in-person that year as a high school brass musician, and I can attest to how great they sounded. 1999 was honestly a great year for DCI. It was the last season in which all the corps used G bugles instead of the normal Bb and F marching brass you’d see in a typical high school or college marching band. The G bugles were much, much more temperamental and harder to tune and blend than standard brass. But when done well, the sound was honestly something hard to describe. It vibrated your bones. Lol.

If you can find troopers 75, 76 or 77 I think you'll see an even bigger difference in marching style. I think you will be surprised at the ages of some of those on the field. Now you need to be 15 or 16. Depending on the corps. And age out is the same as when I was in. But I tried out and started my first season at 12. The age then was 12 to 21. Also another great show was crossman 2019. Valkyrie

Also...actual G-Bugles. Much debated, but nevertheless, that was a sound that few people today have ever heard live. It was a much fuller sound and significantly more "exciting," for lack of a better word, because for most musical arrangements, it mean the horn line was playing one overtone "slot" higher, and the resulting partials gave the sum total a completely different tone. The closest thing I can think of to describe it is that it somewhat resembled the way a train-whistle sounds. It's not an exact comparison. Writing about sound is a difficult thing to do. But it has some of that character...less buzzy than Bb horns, more "core." Sadly, it just doesn't come through in recordings. It's really more about how the horns engaged the air at a live performance. But you can catch a hint of the difference in this video (Madison had very nice bugles at the time...who knew they'd soon be obsolete).

Courtney Coulston It’s some intense stuff 💯. Always being on a bus on the road. I’d lose track of which state we were in. Being that young and that far from family and old friends. There’s a definite learning curve physically and mentally. Which can be emotionally draining.
When I came back home after the season was over , I was almost unrecognizable. Easily the best shape I’ve ever been in. I remember one part of our show we had to do 4 to 5s ( 5 yards in 4 steps) backwards at a fast tempo while playing this jazzy little riff at a soft dynamic. First time we ever practiced it I was dying. Legs were on fire and lungs were pumping like crazy. I barely survived it. Once my conditioning got with the program it was one of my favorite parts of the show. After each competition you get to hear the tapes from the caption judges who are on the field with you during your performance. I remember one of the judges was blown away with that part saying stuff like “ I can barely keep up with you guys and I’m not playing and instrument! Great stuff. You guys are moving and I mean bookin’ it, sounds so good too! Very nice! Good job Bluecoats”
I see what they say about being part of a tight knit group operating at a high level. Whether it’s the armed forces, professional sports, DCI , etc. it’s hard to replicate that sense of camaraderie and force of unity after it’s over.
I recommend anyone who wants to do it to keep working at it. It took me 2 years of auditioning before I made it. You’re up against kids who are also passionate about the craft who are journeying to audition from all around the world. I’m a solid trumpet player and it was no cakewalk for me in making it.
If you’ve never been to a show I recommend it. Or be an OG and just find out which local H.S. the corps you want to see is staying and rehearsing at and go watch them practice. Either way, there’s nothing like hearing a drum corps in real life with actual ears. It’ll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. 💯💯💯
Thanks for making these videos and spreading the word about DCI to people who maybe weren’t aware of it! Very cool ✊🏼

This is one of the greatest 6th place shows in DCI. There are a number of other sixth-place performances that are more fun and entertaining than the champion. Look at Carolina Crown from 2007, Blue Knights from 2000, and Star of Indiana from 1989. All finished sixth in their respective years, but they got tons of love from the crowd. If you want a super entertaining show that placed even lower, look at the Velvet Knights from 1992. They finished tenth that year, but they easily had the loudest crowd reactions out of the rest of the corps. Check them all out.
