Courtney: * cries *
DCI fans: “We did it!!!”
We fans had her in tears with Phantom Regiment as well
yup theres a few performances that had me in tears 🥺🥺🥺🤩
I thought I was the only that cried every time I see or listen to a drum corps lol
An interesting fact about this show! When they were giving out caption awards for this year they gave the wrong corps the brass award. Carolina Crown actually won the brass award but they accidentally announced that the Blue Devils had won, So in the middle of them giving the award to the Blue devils they had to announce they made a mistake. They had to take the award from the blue devils and then give it to Carolina Crown and the crowd went NUTS. Just a cool interesting fact not trying to hate on the Blue Devils that year, The blue devils show in 2012 is amazing and is actually one of the shows that inspired me to do Drum Corps.
We have a correction
@@ryankim0874 truly an iconic line
With guest announcer Steve Harvey
The high point of the awards ceremony that year
@@jeffgray7922 That opening hit was amazing.. in 1996. In 2012 they had that big build up and then it was just like.. "Oh, you're using this music again.. for five seconds.. Ok."
“How did anyone beat that?” - we Crown fans have been asking that since that evening.
Devs were better. That’s how. I get it tho, I’m salty when devs finish lower than first every few years lol
6th place in percussion.
@@scvanguard1 This. They were immensely better that BD in everything else.
Danny Spoonamore immensely better? Nah. Hornline yeah but not immensely. Drill no. Guard no. It’s a great show though agreed. A great second place show.
Even some of us general drumcorps fans have been asking that since that evening.
The most insane part about this show that I haven't seen mentioned is just how much space the hornline takes on the field. It's so insane how tight the timing is though there are a few instances where you can hear different entrances.
This horn line was SO LOUD that year 😩
Best horn line in DCI last year
there was no amplification either bruh thats natural sound
@@isaacm9333 I miss that about DCI. I'm a brass player, so yeah I look forward to seeing Crown when I go to a live show. Unless it's a solo, brass players hate being mic'd :) And apparently we don't like listening to other mic'd brass either lol
Overtone central
bruh i can hear the sound from her earpods in the reaction audio her ears must be dying
@@spencenlevi2755 my headphones have a base and treble boost and to add to that theres a "super human hearing" mode that just triples all audio output. Im gonna try connecting it to my laptop to see if its close to irl lol.
I will never ever forget seeing this in person. The hit at 3:28 was an absolute wall of sound that I swear I felt push me back
She's intuitively catching things like hitting the form at the end of the phrase and other things. I'm impressed
You should react to INFERNO by Carolina Crown 2015 Its about falling into then subsequently climbing out of the depths of hell :) should be fun
It’s about Dante’s inferno but yeah close enough
Big Eggolego yeah, his journey THROUGH hell.
Andrew Kim yes, but you said falling and climbing out when the whole premise is that Virgil leads him through the nine layers one at a time where he talks to people
Big Eggolego I thought by signifying the beginning (falling) and end (climbing out) of the story, the journey in between was implied.
Andrew Kim falling and climbing is different from journeying and peacefully talkinh
13:00 the chord heard around the world. this is truly gods hornline
This show is phenomenal. I'm so lucky I was still marching DCI that year and could see it live a few times. Incredible!
Same that was my first year in the activity with Jersey Surf. I was on judge blocker loading duty and spent the first 3-4 shows on tour stuck in a hot Ryder truck sweating my ass off while the rest of the corps was watching the shows. I remember getting the props loaded quick enough one night in the Northeast (maybe somewhere in New York or Massachusetts) to be able to get in the stands and hear a hornline live for the first time. It was Crown and i was front row. Freaking nuts. I remember thinking "Is this what my corps sounds like?" LOL. I also remember Teal Sound folding the following show lol
I love seeing people watch this show! It was such an honor to march this year
Early 2010 crown hornline members are a different breed of humans
I recommend Bluecoats 2015 Kinetic Noise
I think we found Courtney's favorite show lol
Idk. Tilt made her cry.
Chad Tarver yeah probably tilt
I think it would be fun for us to try & guess her favorite show. That is, if she can narrow it down to only 1 favorite. She went crazy when she saw Madison 95.......just saying.
Nice that they had you watch the High Cam. The multi-cam is cool, but being able to see all the drill design is always fun. 1989 Phantom Regiment is another one that didn't win but lots of people wonder why.
I personally despise multicam. Especially in recent years. They always miss such great moments.
I'm a super huge fan of the 1989 finals but I have to disagree with you about people wondering why Phantom didn't win that year. The 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard show is consider one of the all-time great DCI shows and its winning score of 98.8 held the highest score title for the next 21 years!
But none of that takes away from what Phantom did that year. Phantom had a phenomenal show as well and I actually like that show more than the two shows Phantom won their championships with. I've always had so much sympathy for that Phantom show having to go up against Santa Clara's. Phantom's score of 98.4 would have beaten the prior two DCI champions and beaten/tied the next FOURTEEN DCI champions! It was a really great show that just happened to go up against a transcendental show.
12:51 is the sound of the universe being created
The closer is bae. Also, they were booking it the WHOLE show and were still playing like that. Insane.
Man I forgot how insanely fucking awesome they were that year.
3 words ... favorite show ever there’s even a lot of crazy things you couldn’t see from this high camera angle like some crazy color guard tosses
Glad I got to see this live in Atlanta right on the 50. The part from 3:25 to 3:30 literally shook my chest. My dad who doesn't even care about "band" was like "Holy shit!" and started clapping haha. Carolina Crown... turning the biggest football fan/car mechanic into a Drum Corps fan.
Just some more DCI lingo:
-The “patterns” are normally called “drill” (like “that drill was amazing” rather than “those patterns”)
-idk if you know all the drums so you got snares, quads (or tenors), and basses
-really quick notes up or down a scale are called “runs”
-quickly switching from one note to another a lot and really quickly are called “trills”
And this one easily over BD
It's so much fun describing technique to Courtney >w< She learns so quickly!
ooo thanks so much!! 😊😊
applies to high school marching band too!
carolina crown 2009!
That big hit at 12:50 will NEVER get old!
I absolutely love to see how much you enjoy these shows. I really warms my heart. These kids work so hard, they deserve all the appreciation that they can get.
I love your reaction! You get it!!!
Her best reaction to a Corp yet.
She’s one of us y’all. She cries during drum corps shows, she’s one of us.
I love this show
Wanna see still that “comes outta nowhere” (14:43)? You gotta check out Star of Indiana’s 1990 and 1991, particularly 1991. That drill was absolutely INSANE.
Also, it’s been 8 years since For the Common Good came out, but boy do I still get goosebumps. Thanks for reminding me how amazing this show is!
Agree with you there. Also 1993 Star has some epic drill moments in the closer.
Courtney you should look at 2016 as it is a Wild West show
ooo sounds interesting!!!
We agree Courtney! We wanted Crown to win too!
Just saw this but my band director was in this show,he was part of the baritone section
Unbelievable! Such dedication by these musician athletes and color guard Olympians. BRAVO!
This is probably the hardest show ever for hornline. This or Crown the next year lol.
cadets 15 is up there imo
@@ursamajor4684 I was about to say, I thought is was cadets '15
blueshades That, too.
C'mon guys ... Phantom Regiment's SPARTACUS show? That was just as monumental!
it wasn't nearly as difficult though
(i also don't really like spartacus that much)
Yeah. I WILL STAND BEHIND MY WORDS... ONE YEAR AND TEN YEARS LATER.
My. Favorite. Show. Ever. The drill is AMAZING. That hornline... is probably the best I've ever heard. They're insane! I've seen this show sooo many times and I tear up and get goosebumps every single time. I would give anything to time travel and watch this show live. I am so glad you watched this show and enjoyed it, Courtney. I knew you would!
The Blue Devils has a fantastic show in 2012, but this takes the cake for me
‘12 devils was pretty clean, but crown was a better story imo and just a classic
If this show had a story, I missed it
Malik Campbell same lmao
‘12 BD was flat and forgettable. Not even top 3 material. Most of their championship wins from 2007 on have asterisks tbh. It’s so obviously when you watch the vids.
Hey Courtney! I highly recommend you react to blue Devils 2012. It is much different than this show by Carolina Crown, but I know you will like it all the same.
One of the best DCI performances in DCI history.
How did this not win, I'm watching this and I'm trying not to cry it is that good. I can actually understand your reaction at one point your face actually blushed bright red because you were hit by the epicness of what you were watching and hearing
I showed this show to my 75 year old mom who has a strong music background. She loved this show throughout and had similar reactions to Courtney at all the big moments. She was shocked to find out it came in second place. Then I show her the Blue Devils show and she had zero reactions to the show. It just fell flat. It was nice to get a reaction similar to my own from a non-Drum Corp nerd.
Hands down hardest brass book in dci up to that point. Anyone who knew what they were listening to and how hard it was to accomplished was floored. This same scenario of Crown being the crowd favorite but still coming in 2nd place happened in 2009 too. This show was really well designed because the parts where they did difficult/fast drill were at the very start and end of the show. People were wow'd with the first 2 minutes but you have to understand that is when everyone is still fresh, you dont feel tired at that point and once they finished the opener, they barely moved. Once you get a chance to catch your breath, like the entire middle 2/3rds of the show, you are fresh again to do more crazy drill no problem.
When you take into consideration the amount of movement in this show as well as just how much of the field they use, I'd say probably it's the
hardest performance a hornline has ever had to do in dci period. Though if your welcome to prove me wrong.
Yeah as a brass teacher myself, this has been the best brass line the entire decade, easy.
The part about this that blows me away is there is no mic to amp the volume that sound your getting at the top of the bleachers in the video is ALL the players doing and they where playing ffff while practically running around the field for the whole show and keeping the sound crisp.
cabaret voltaire was amazing show and was super clean but crowns show was infinitely harder and better
👑👑👑👑 Courtney needs a ticket to DCI 2021 Finals --- Can anyone help her out??? Steve Rondinaro?? Dan Acheson?? Dennis DeLucia?? Will Pitts?? Hello??
so sweet! Im planning to come in 2022 😊😊
This is the show that made me fall in love with Crown and DCI.
idk if you saw it, but at the end one of the marchers balanced one of those giant cubes on his chin, which literally has me screaming
My favorite show of all time.
“Oh my godddd”
About "Fanfare For the Common Man" , which was predominantly in this show: Aaron Copland, its composer, was one of 18 that were commissioned to write a fanfare for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in 1945 to honor the end of World War II. If those 18 fanfares that were submitted, only this one still remains in the classical repertoire for orchestras to this day.
Come to USA!
again, the room changes are very drastic, it goes from what looks like a hotel room to a very small, plain room.
lol ive been from japan to florida to auckland to wellington all in one month
wow, thats a lot of places!
I love you girl!!!
Crown 12 is my favorite show from the Bb horn era, by far. I immediately get sucked into Crown's atmosphere and am trapped until the show ends. Between the immediate triple tounging in Dreams, the triplet partial slurs in the 3rd movement followed by an _extremely tight_ double tounging section in the high brass, then followed by the immaculate Fanfare for The Common Man, which shouldn't be allowed for DCI because wow it's the only thing i think about from the 2012 season, and of course, _*the hit*_, also known as Star Of Indiana's soul implanted into Crown. That brass hit sends me no matter what video it's from, it's sooooooo beautiful. That's not even talking about the drill(just...... all of it)! or the drumline(i love this book, it's a shame it wasn't cleaner)! or the pit (I still don't understand how they got the final movement's 16th note barrage together, it must have been hell)! This show, and Star 91 and 93, Phantom 89 and 08 are my top 5, and I seriously don't think that will change soon.
Crown should have won that year Courtney!
Cody Domino Crown was 0-12 against BD that summer. 12 shows multiple cities, states and different judges across multiple time zones. Only twice Crown got within a point and a half of BD........their first head to head in Minnesota and Crown's home show in South Carolina. How you get smoked by someone 12 times in a 6-7 week span and you "should've won" is beyond me.
@@gunner-qf9eh politics? There’s been several years fans were eye rolling another BD win. So many of us see and feel something different at nationals.
@@codydomino5124 Of course! Politics. So funny how everytime BD wins, it's politics, but if someone else wins, than the judges got it right.
Guys I love this show, but dci is an group competition and BD uses all the captions that are on the scoring card to the best of their ability and you can’t say every BD show doesn’t deserve it. 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2019 all deserved the win. Cabaret Voltaire is actually a really good show and story.
How did they lose? 6th place drum line, down from 4th place in Semis. Congrats on the new apartment!
Carolina Crown (2nd-97.65, up 0.20 from Semifinals) won Music Effect, Visual Proficiency, Brass and Music Analysis. The corps was 2nd in Visual Effect, 3rd in Visual Analysis and Color Guard and 6th in Percussion, down from 4th in Semis.
Yeah, that drop in percussion was ridiculous. Seemed very fishy at the time, but I'm not a drum guy so whatever.
Jeff Gray I personally didn’t care for the Devils show and Crown Percussion has always been their weakness. If they had a better drum line, they would constantly be challenging the Devils.
Crown was my favorite. The devils are top notch always. Either way, all the corps give their hearts to the organization. Love watching them all.
my favorite show of all time. omg i’m so happy you reacted to this!
Do the blue devil 2019
Boston crusaders 2017 "Wicked Games" or Boston crusaders 2018 "SOS"
I forgot how much running this drum corps did. Maintaining that high a performance level for that long is so underappreciated.
Fun fact:
The mellophone lick at 4:20 was used again by Crown the next year in E=mc2.
Crown did that a lot back then. They would sneak in a lick from the previous year. I think it stopped in 2014
greggsovereasy they need to bring that lick back.
That’s the Klesch lick. You’ll hear it almost every year.
greggsovereasy 2016 has kicks from 2015 hidden in the show 😀
Licks*
Blue Devils 2012 is my favorite show of all time!! Courtney you gotta watch it with us on the funliner podcast!!
Interesting. I like it much more now than I did in 2012. I find that it’s a show that grows on you.
I'd love to see this!!! Courtney join them for that one TRUST you won't regret it!
If y’all can work out the time differences that’d be a fun video for sure!
I love this show for many reasons, but the biggest one is that it remind me of Star of Indiana's Barber and Bartok show from 1993. The 2012 season as a whole has some similarities to 1993. A good show in 1st, the best remembered show in 2nd, and Phantom in 3rd.
I've been a DCI junkie for more decades than I'd care to say, and I'm not gonna touch the holy war of Devil's vs. the rest of World Class. But after Crown coming up short with "FTCG" in '12, I honestly believe LOS would have broken out in a straight up riot had "E=MC2" been denied.
And as much as I loved their World Championship season, '12's show might have been just as epic.
That chord during the closer is one for the ages...
Went to high school with the drum major from this show. (The head conductor) He was 3 years below me, but we all knew at that time he was going to go onto do amazing things. Yes, they should have won that year too.
You have to react to Lyra de Maua 2009
I haven’t even seen the video and I already dropped a like. I’m SO EXCITED. YAY YAY YAYYYYYY i needed this during these stressful times!!!!
I compared both this show and BDs of that year and I really wish DCI would implement a difficulty rating. Crown is running nuts in this show, BD barely played while they moved. BD build their shows for winning, Crown builds for entertainment. I'd much rather be entertained.
Whenever someone said how did they not win, who beat them? Just assume it was the Blue devils, they're the only corps that can beat something this epic.
Courtney!! What’s your top 5 DCI shows you’ve seen so far?
Hi Chad!! Ohhhh man thats truly too hard to say
@@CourtneyCoulston Based on your reactions, I’d say Bluecoats 2014 and Crown 2012 are up there in the list.
Fun fact: Some corps have signature sets/drills. Carolina crown, for example, will always form a crown in their drill. Madison Scouts will form a fleur-de-lis. Santa Clara Vanguard's cymbal line will form a "V" using their cymbals. Something to look out for :D
Yup! Cadets will usually do a Z-pull, Phantom Regiment recently brought back the kick-out, Star of indiana would always form a star, etc.
Courtney: I recommend the 2006 Phantom Regiment and 2010 Phantom Regiment here: ua-cam.com/video/Siyb68Ovv5E/v-deo.html and 2006 here: ua-cam.com/video/g9jCT1qIsnU/v-deo.html
Their show was music of Aaron Copeland. That beautiful fanfare in the middle where they are so spread out and you were about to cry is called Fanfare for the Common Man. When I got married, that is what I marched down the isle to.
I’ve been waiting for this show since the dci react videos started lmao! So worth the wait!
This show in my eyes is definitely a winner in my book. But I always heard things about the Carolina Crown drumline (no offense to any crown alumni) bringing down scores. I just noticed that this show revolved in the hornline & colorguard. Blue Devils of course got the higher score and every caption except brass. (Once again I don't mean to offend anyone)
Yup you're exactly correct there percussion scores were not high throughout the 2010s which caused their overall score to go down a bit. Not trying to disrespect Crown alumni.
There were also some GE issues. Having the corps proper and guard in the same color scheme in the 2nd half takes away from the effect. Not making this up, it's actually universal on judging both scholastic and independent groups. Plus I was on staff the year after and asked what else beside percussion brought them down and that was the answer I got
@@RatSlayerGaming Yea I heard about that too and that is like how Cadets 2015 color scheme change hurt them. Are u still involved in the activity.
THAT. CLOSER.
I don’t know if anyone else mentioned this but it was this show that started the beginning of the end for Crown’s Cream colors. Judges said there wasn’t a lot of color variety in the show and lighter uniforms usually show imperfections over darker ones. Most the 2011 crowd stayed for 2012 so brass was amazing. New visual head and uniforms and they couldn’t deny Crown a win anything longer. Little jealous I didn’t get to march this show though 😩
lotta love out here for you Courtney...thanks for all your vids and your joy...Kent in Ohio
thanks so much Kent!
fun fact my old band director and new director were in the cadets for 2012 and they can’t stop bragging about beating people😭😭😭😭
Such an amazing show from a brass perspective. A lot of the drill was super spaced out which makes it difficult to align due to sound delay. The lip flexibility that they demonstrate at 7:20 and later when they repeat that phrase is also very difficult to do. Too bad their perc didn't do so hot that year
The reason they didn’t win is because of their drums. Their battery placed either 5th or 6th.
I love this show and Blue Devils 2012, and would've been fine with either winning. I know a lot of people don't like Cabaret Voltaire, but I love everything about that show. At the end of the day, I agree that BD deserved the win, but Crown 12 was probably the most physically demanding show ever. This was, in every sense of the word, a championship show. Most other years this would have won. But that's the way it goes.
This is probably the hardest show I've ever seen put onto the field
Please do Cadets 2011
The main reason the Blue Devils beat them this year was because BD got a perfect color guard score and crown got only 6th in perc. Plus the BD’s show was a complete game changer in terms of innovation and breaking the mold which gave them lots of GE points
Michael Moon Actually Crown's percussion could have maxed out a perfect 20 score in percussion and they still would have been nearly point behind BD. As much as people want to believe, drums would not have saved Crown. BD popped perfect 20's in 4 different captions. They maxed out perfect 40 in GE Visual. Maxed out perfect 20 in Visual Analysis, and maxed out perfect 20 in Color Guard. Crown 2012 was an absolute monster. But BD was on another level. Blue Devils went 12-0 head to head against Crown in 2012, only two of those match ups Crown was able to get within half a point of BD.........their first match up of the season in Minnesota..........and Crown's home show in South Carolina.
I’ve been waiting for this!
crown 12 is probably the best hornline ever
Finally... The show of shows!!! Love this show so so much
Dude her reaction is SOOOO authentic it’s hilarious 😂😂😂
One of the best closers of all time easily. The drill and music is INSANE. Up there with Cadets 2011, Phantom 08, Crown 2019
This is my favorite show ever, thanks for checking it out
Some subtle BAC love?
LETS GOOOOOOOO I was literally looking at the music when I got the notification
I just love watching your reactions to one of my very favorite Crown shows of all time!
Please please please react to either Blue Devils 2011 or Bluecoats 2018
I hope she watches crown 2016 soon.
It’s gotta get uploaded to UA-cam without getting struck down for copyright infringement.
new drinking game...take a shot every time she says oh my God...20 seconds and you'll be passed out
