She had EXACTLY the right reaction to the ending that everyone experienced in ‘88. It just shows you how timeless the music is. It’s a shame this one didn’t win as Madison was a juggernaut. It will, however, always remain as one of my favorite shows of all time.
I am super excited that you enjoyed the 1988 Santa Clara Vanguard show❤️As fellow Vanguard alumni from 1991, 1992 it absolutely brings joy to my heart to how much you enjoyed it. As members it’s so much joy to see you love it❤️That show brings tears to my eyes still to this day❤️
Juliet Ferriera is the name of the Phantom of the Opera color guard actress (the main dancer) in this performance. She’s my high school marching band’s color guard director, and she’s absolutely AMAZING. She’s done so much creative work to make our marching program top notch, and we idolize her because of it. Can’t say enough good things about her.
Ya know 18 scv sorta spoke to the old school elements of a drum corps show.. I cant put finger on it.. But it just seemed like that show minus props could've existed in the 90s
Oh man... that was a BEAST! Saw it live in Dallas. That part in the ballad where the hornline is all backfield just blasting into the visitor stands is one of the most surreal and powerful moments I've witnessed in a show. Sounded like the whole visitor stands were about to collapse, lol.
BRUXXUS I would kill to see that show live!! That and the ending hit in the closer seem like it would blow the place away. Not the best overall (sucks they didn’t place as high as I wanted) but in general affect to me, (especially because I love les mis) amazing
If you need more Les Mis you should also check out Boston Crusaders 2011. I marched that year and I still absolutely love our rendition of Bring Him Home
I saw this performance done at our state university and I will never forget it at one point it was so overwhelming that I felt as if the gates of heaven had opened up.
I was there that night. I was 7 years old. It was magic. To hear it live was unbelievable. And I LOVE Phantom of The Opera. I picked up a horn after that and I’ve been in love with DCI ever since.
@@oldsopplaya I definitely respect your take on it. I only heard very little bit about it, but do you feel the random draw for finals performance times cost SCV the title that year in part? We know judges can sometimes get it wrong, but I wonder if that didn't help them, both Vanguard and the panel
the music moment you described after the show ended really is a profound and special thing. it's not just being unified with pride while competing with your fellow members, or the knowledge that it's your final opportunity to perform with (or even be in the vicinity of) this family of people, performing something you've rehearsed every day for months and months, since after finals, IT'S ALL OVER, and everyone goes home to wherever in the country/world they're from.......but on top of all that, it's about that feeling when you see, hear, and FEEL the crowd being affected by your performance. in my 5 summers of doing this (03-07), my most memorable and cherished on-field moment was at the climax of our (bluecoats) 2006 ballad, and i can still remember the exact feeling at the moment we arrived at our big major chord. i can picture the view of the crowd in wisconsin from behind the bell of my horn and feeling this tangible rush of energy from the crowd, the emotional resonance of all the harmonies, melodies, and dynamics we'd been building up. (ironically, or perhaps not, in a meta kind of way, that sort of connection was kinda the concept behind our show as a whole.) i felt unified with the crowd, like they felt what i was feeling in that moment. it's the big payoff, the culmination of months of effort.....but don't sell your own emotions short!! what you experienced is exactly the point, and i appreciate your earnestness and humility in terms of sorting through your responses. we do it all summer long, day in, day out, and it's exciting (and difficult) to push ourselves to be as good as possible and all, but there's really nothing like sharing this craft with a crowd of people, reveling in their surprise, and basking in their gratitude and enjoyment. it's truly a two-sided conversation, and reactions from people such as yourself, whether it's in crowds, and online like this, is the exchange of energy we do it for. also, what you said about old drum corps being pretty similar to modern drum corps, and the honor of carrying on these traditions and keeping the legacies going, are both so so so true. it really is an immense honor to help carry the torch for the activity, in the footsteps of these timeless shows we know and love. there are a lot more similarities than differences; rule changes or not, it's still the same 'thing.' for what it's worth, i'm not sure drum corps is dying, or even getting less popular than it was 10, 20, 30 years ago. yes, there are less corps than there used to be, but there are still full stadiums around the country as the tour is going on, and thousands and thousands of people auditioning. people like to say it's less popular because they're not happy with some of the modern rules changes, and want to act like the changes killed the activity just because they're mad about the changes. it's not 'popular' like mainstream popular, but it still seems pretty healthy. while some people hate the new rules, others love them. i love older shows (especially once asymmetrical drill became a thing in the mid-80's) and new ones alike....i used to be cranky about electronics and rule changes, but i love the performance level of where the activity's at these days, so i'm just happy to be along for the ride. cheers to anyone who got this far!! much love and here's to hoping for a strong and healthy comeback for our beloved music-pageantry-sport in 2021!
Still one of my favorite shows of all time. Classic and modern drum corps in one show. They did the show again in 1989, and while I liked that version too I think 1988 was better. So emotional.
Cavaliers 2010 Carolina Crown 2016 Vanguard 1999 Cavaliers 2014 (bc hashtag ageout) You’ve never let me down so keep that up! I’m so proud of you for opening the eyes up to the new babies in drum corps to see shows literally back in 1988. I’m so happy right now!
Just have to say - Your videos girl.... With all the hate and grim that's going on over here in the US. The joy you bring is not only missed. It's supersize appreciated.
Also, your perception and feeling about how it feels to perform is spot on, but what I find even more amazing is that you TOTALLY get the feeling of family and camaraderie everyone that's marched with EVERYONE else that's marched drum corps. It's an instant bond and feeling of understanding and friendship. You *know* how hard they worked, you *know* that person went through hell but also experienced the best times and biggest sense of accomplishment. I've actually got jobs because an interviewer knew what drum corps was and saw I'd marched on my resume'. They understand that level of hard work, dedication, and teamwork is something few people can match, and I'm so, so thankful to this day I got to experience it. :)
Love that you love this activity as much as we alums and fans do. Thank you! When it comes to this Phantom of the Opera show I can't help but shed a tear, just like you. Too bad you couldn't have seen it in person (you weren't born yet). You would have loved it even more (the whole corps "disappeared" on the field).
You got to see the two styles that make up Vanguard. On one side, Vanguard is amazing at doing arrangements of Broadway musicals such as Phantom, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, and a few others. On the other side, they are incredible at performing a lot of 20th century and contemporary classical music, which is what you heard in the Babylon production. It definitely does good to watch corps in the 80s and 90s because you get to see the corps' musical and visual identity evolve and change from year to year. That was a golden period of drum corps.
I loved your reaction to the show!! I marched in a smaller drum corps back then and Santa Clara was my favorite Corps. Even in a smaller corps you have a overwhelming sense of pride. There is nothing else like this. It takes so much energy and commitment to do this. Santa Clara did this show but very different arrangements 2 years in a row. The 1988 show was so very incredible and the 1989 was even more incredible. Vanguard played after us at many shows and we got to go in the stands to watch all the other corps perform. It was such a magical time beck then. I wish I had a time machine to go back!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this. It's awesome to see your raw emotions watching this performance. ❤ There's currently a tiff between old school vs. new school, and this video confirms what old school tried to bring out in the audience seeing your reaction!
As an early 2000’s SCV Alum, it’s nice to see people appreciate our hard work. I have my SCV Aussie cover displayed right next to my college and two high school covers. It’s a reminder of the musical journey I took.
The golden age of DCI. I saw this show in person (not this performance, but earlier that season) and it was mind-blowing. So loud it made your chest vibrate. You really should do 1987 Sky Ryders... West Side Story.
I can't even begin to describe the feeling when you are performing a show that hit all the points. You are so amped up it is a feeling like no other!! As a matter of point, all of those performers are 14-21 years of age, if you weren't aware.
Courtney, I have watched this particular show dozens of times. I have never cried at the end until I watched it along with you here. Somet hing about your genuine reactions of amazement and emotional connection moves me and makes me feel less like a “band nerd” (U.S. derogatory slang for school kinds in band)! Cheers! And you should totally come to the states and see a show in person someday!
Hi! I was a member of the Vanguard in 1988. I was the skinny kid in the pit with the blonde flat top. I loved watching your reaction. Thanks for posting!
I was at this show It was an amazing time to be able to go to championships. It was my family’s summer vacation every year. Miss those times. This show was awesome and they blew your socks off.
Another instrument facts: they're actually using bugles! More specifically, two valved (button) bugles. Whenever the 2 trumpet/ soprano horn soloists played, you can tell there's only 2 valves
When i was in highschool i joined one the famous drum and bugle corps...i learnt a lot.. amazing feeling... teamwork....foot work...music...sport....amazing arrangements.... everything in one... tiring yes..but its nothing.....i was lucky enough tobe part of the team...
This was a classic show, but you made me feel a little old when you said you hadn't even been born yet lol (I had just graduated high school). Anyway, I've noticed that you've been reacting to quite a bit of DCI, and thought I'd throw my all time favorite show into the mix: Phantom Regiment's "Harmonic Journey" from 2003.
My former band teacher was a percussionist in this show. When I was in high school, he made us perform the same show. This show is one of my favorites now.
If you ever go to a DCI show, you need to go to two shows on consecutive nights. Once to see the shows on the field, and once to walk around the parking lot and watch warm-ups.
FMM -- The Cavaliers '77-'87 (Baritone/Contrabass)-- As performers, most of us are so focused that we try to block the crowd reaction, but when it hits, it's a feeling that's very hard to explain. Sometimes the crowd can be so loud that it overpowers our playing, and that's when it becomes difficult. When your group hits on all cylinders as Santa Clara Vanguard did here, with the emotion and power, it's pretty awesome. That's a hard feeling to beat, knowing that you left absolutely everything on the field, with no regrets. That's what makes it all worth it (win or lose)
I really LOVE watching your reactions to these videos. It's so refreshing watching someone who really "gets it". I'm also amazed by the high quality of the video and audio of this clip. I started working professionally in the video/television industry in 1987, and I look back at some of the stuff I did back then and cringe with how lousy the quality is.
The 3rd snare drummer from the right (the black snare drummer) is on my drumline now and he sucks LOL. (Just kidding). Here he is. He's the middle snare next to me. He is wearing dark blue. We're all in Missouri. His brother is on our drumline too. His brother is the taller second guy on the far left wearing red: ua-cam.com/video/_m4zQdoyQKY/v-deo.html
Hi Courtney! Me again. This is one of my all time favorite shows. When this thing hit the field, Phantom of the Opera was in its first year on Broadway and tickets took a year to get! This is old school drum corps but still extremely relatable. Everyone knows the music and the story so it fun just to sit back and enjoy it all. PS, There’s lots of little hidden surprises in all these shows so watch them a few times and see what you missed, you’ll be amazed!!!
What a great site. Thanks for sharing these and I love your reactions. I was in Drum Corps in the early 1970 's, and still enjoy watching every chance I get.
This was the show that caused me to fall in love with Drum Corps Something to bear in mind: in 1988, they were play 2-valved G Bugles, and not standard Trumpets, Horns, Baritones, and Tubas like they are now. So, not only are people playing like this, but they are doing after having to learn a totally different fingering system compared to what they have played in high school and/or college.
I got emotional because I was fortunate enough to see The Phantom of the Opera musical and I was able recognize the music. This is almost as powerful as the musical
These were the two shows that inspired me to want to march DCI and I was fortunate enough to be 1993 Member of the Bluecoats. Thank you to these shows for inspiring me so many years ago.
I am so happy you finally got to see "The Phantom of the Opera" your reaction during the company front. Love it. The experience of having been a part of drum corps. Is like none other. Keep the videos coming. You put a smile on my face, with your reactions. Lets us as former DCI Alumni, know that we truly effected people and still do. THANK YOU!
that diagonal company front at 11:40 was pretty sweet, you don't see it too often. (blue devils 2014 is one of the only examples that pops into mind right now, i don't know if those classic madison scouts rotating ones count.) i've listened to the 1989 version of this show (which set a scoring record for a championship show that stood until 2002 cavaliers), maybe like 100+ times in my life, but have only listened to the first version in 1988 maybe 2 or 3 times. i've been sleeping on it, it's a solid show, fairly different than 1989. maybe a little more subdued. personally i loooooooooove blue devils' hornline and music ensemble that year, but visual/guard/percussion/general effect all might've been what helped push madison ahead of bd and scv in 88.
Years ago the championships took place in different locations around the states and sometimes i could get there. Once they decided to centrally locate it it was too far away. But i can understand the costs involved to get corps from one end of the country to the other. We did see the dci in Philadelphia in 1976 i think was the year..
This show was awesome.amd I'm glad you loved it. You should watch Santa Clara Vanguard 1989. They did Phantom of the Opera again that year. They rearranged the music and turned their performance up a few notches amd ended up winning the world championship.
Something to be said about the quality of sound without being dependent upon amplification and electronics... If you like the recording, hearing it LIVE was incredible. The sound was THICK and tangible. You could feel it in the air around you. Speakers can make loud sound, but it is not the same.
There is simply no substitute for giant sound being made by humans, and the listener being aware of this at every moment. No amplifier and no electronic effect will ever have this fundamental power.
Yaaay! A Classic! Fun fact this was the second time that SCV(Santa Clara Vanguard) Did this exact show they pretty much said "whelp let's just do it again it was pretty good the first time".
14:06 "Isn't it amazing that this art....is still here today?" That's a mood right there. And we know she's not just talking about the concept of it (the instruments, the marching etc.). But rather the emotion; that moment where you're breathing heavy after the last note of the show, and when the audience looks at your glistening face, no one can tell where the tears end and the sweat begins.
It is overwhelming. Was there on the 50. If you don't know the story of Phantom of the Opera, watch the musical (not the movie) and you will gain an appreciation of what they did on the field. Especially the meaning of the mask/masquerade. And you are absolutely correct on the big brass sound. It is what keeps me coming. If you like it in the videos, just wait til you hear it live. There is NO comparison.
Fantastic reaction! I love that you appreciate these older DCI shows. You should do one for the 1988 Blue Devils too. They were undefeated going into finals and got upset. But their show that year was one of the best ever in my opinion.
A corps worth looking at is Star of Indiana. 1991 is one of my favorite shows of all-time and 1993 was so different than anything DCI had seen at that point.
One of the best DCI shows.... EVER! Still one of the best drum lines in history.
I was so privileged to see them perform this both in 88 and 89. Still makes me cry when I see it 😢brings back so many memories.
I'm a simple man. I see _"new Zealand girl reacts to dci"_ I click. I like video.

Made me happy to see how you felt! I was in the pit in 87 and 88! Had to break out the tissues seeing it after all these years. Thank you!
Hi! I was a member of the Vanguard in 1988. I was the skinny kid in the pit with the blonde flat top. I loved watching your reaction. Thanks for posting!
2010 Bluecoats. Some fantastic drill and awesome sounding music!!
I was at this show It was an amazing time to be able to go to championships. It was my family’s summer vacation every year. Miss those times. This show was awesome and they blew your socks off.
I just love watching someone fall in love with these shows that made fall in love with the activity.
That was an amazing reaction! Thank you so much for watching this show.
My favorite corps. They were the epitome of class. True champions in victory and defeat. I love them so much - as much as the corps I marched with.
The emotion. I felt it, too. Thank you.
Glad you liked it.. i was there. DCI 1988- 91
Me too - 1984-1987.
Yea man i was Freelancers Baritone
This was a classic show, but you made me feel a little old when you said you hadn't even been born yet lol (I had just graduated high school). Anyway, I've noticed that you've been reacting to quite a bit of DCI, and thought I'd throw my all time favorite show into the mix: Phantom Regiment's "Harmonic Journey" from 2003.
Right?!
Seconded on Harmonic Journey. It was literally a year before I was born but when I heard it, it quickly became one of my favorites
Watch Crown 2016!!! The shows name is Relentless and it is PREMIUM!! Also I really wanna March with vanguard,it’s a big dream of mine!
This is, by far and without a doubt, the single best closer in DCI history. It was so epic, in fact, that they did it two years in a row.
What a great site. Thanks for sharing these and I love your reactions. I was in Drum Corps in the early 1970 's, and still enjoy watching every chance I get.
This was the show that caused me to fall in love with Drum Corps
Something to bear in mind: in 1988, they were play 2-valved G Bugles, and not standard Trumpets, Horns, Baritones, and Tubas like they are now. So, not only are people playing like this, but they are doing after having to learn a totally different fingering system compared to what they have played in high school and/or college.
One of my all time favorite DCI shows. I was in that crowd. Though young, this show was magnificent.
I got emotional because I was fortunate enough to see The Phantom of the Opera musical and I was able recognize the music. This is almost as powerful as the musical
OMG! How could I forget?! Velvet Knights 1992!!!!
I may have to find a way to get a full, high quality recording of that and recommend it.
Yes!! Would be great for her to see a very VERY different style. Even if only for the WTF moments lol
One of my all time favorite performances
What a beautiful testament to the emotional power of old-school simplicity, unlike much of today's disorganized chaos.
The Vanguard has always had good bearing and formality .
Its good she sees that🙂
This show was awesome.amd I'm glad you loved it. You should watch Santa Clara Vanguard 1989. They did Phantom of the Opera again that year. They rearranged the music and turned their performance up a few notches amd ended up winning the world championship.
I’m glad you liked 88. One of my fav shows of all time
I saw it live both in '87 and '88...it was an experience I'll never forget.
Notice they are using bugles (2 valve) back in the day! Some high schools in the 90's used this theme for their shows, so spectacular!
Yaaay! A Classic! Fun fact this was the second time that SCV(Santa Clara Vanguard) Did this exact show they pretty much said "whelp let's just do it again it was pretty good the first time".
This is the first one. They debuted Phantom of the Opera in 88, lost to tbe Scouts, then brought it back in 89 for the gold
@@brianarzola whilst fight continuously for that gold against *cough cough* Brandt: Phantooooooooooooom Rrrrrrregiment
Power of G Bugles, 33 years later still rupturing tear ducts.
"First of all, definitely wasn't born yet"
And all the drum corps fans watching this video just got liver spots on their hands.
I saw this show, it was amazing, Santa Clara is one of my favs.
Watch Phantom Regiments 2010 show “Into the Light”. It’s amazing, guys like my comment so she can react to it!!!!
I was going to recommend it but there isnt a video of it on youtube for her to react to :/
14:06
"Isn't it amazing that this art....is still here today?"
That's a mood right there. And we know she's not just talking about the concept of it (the instruments, the marching etc.). But rather the emotion; that moment where you're breathing heavy after the last note of the show, and when the audience looks at your glistening face, no one can tell where the tears end and the sweat begins.
13:10 time for you to hear it in person. Videos don't even come close (^_^)
This is so true. I live watching the videos, but nothing compares to having your ears blown back in person. Goose bumps galore!
4:35...one of thee best drum roll releases ever recorded !
One of my all time favorites for sure!
I was in the audience for that one & it still gets me
Carolina Crown 2014 is such an amazing show
if you haven't seen the original phantom of the opera musical, I recommend watching the 25th anniversary show at the Royal Albert Hall from 2012
2011
She gets it ... good to see that ...
Courtney it will never go away.
Watch 1989 Phantom Regiment “New World Symphony.”
My old band director is the drum major :)
One of the best Drum Corps shows EVER!!! ua-cam.com/video/YwBSo-cCdu4/v-deo.html
I’m loving these DCI reactions
A corps worth looking at is Star of Indiana. 1991 is one of my favorite shows of all-time and 1993 was so different than anything DCI had seen at that point.
Total love! Keep this up!
