He played sopranl . He may have marched year before but I'm pretty sure he marched '96 too or may have been 97. He then went out for a few years (for the last few weeks of tours) as a soprano tech.
the Scouts could use Malaguena as their finisher literally every year and I still would never get tired of it lol
Seriously, and I always forget how amazing this year's take was on it.
I competed against this show all summer in 96. It was always a chore to follow these guys. The audience was absolutely spent. All the babies were already thrown! I have to say, this is one of my all-time favorite drum corps shows of any era. They just grabbed you by the short hairs and shook like a rabid dog for the entire duration. They were loud as all creation and so exciting. What a group!

The closer in this show is Malagueña, a song the scouts famously played in 1988, what many people believe to be the greatest closer of all time. Definitely recommend!
Madison has played Malagueña since 1963. I think it is the best drum corps show ever.

@@Miyamotospoop13 I marched with Eau Claire, which is just down the freeway from Madison, and St. Paul Scouts. SPS in my last year, 1965, was 18th in VFW Nationals. We were even with Madison in the 60's but then that was not a good decade for Madison.
And now Courtney has seen one of the all-time great three-year runs....Madison 95-97.
Yes they are soprano G bugles. They play Bb trumpets now. The guy you were impressed with is John "Iron Lips" Schipper.

I saw them live in Circleville Ohio in 96 with my wife and brother. The energy they infused in that stadium was amazing. They just kept coming at you. The lead soloist John Shipper was on point. My all time favorite show and drum corp, fan for life!

Bass two
There are drum corps that try to impress judges... And those that please the crowds. These guys pleased the crowds. It's such a crime that they placed 5th or 6th. Nobody remembers who won. But this show will always be legendary.
I love Madison, but 96 was a stacked year!! BD tied for 1st with that crime show, I don't remember. But PHANTOM REGIMENT!!! with defiant heart absolutely deserved to win - one of the best DCI shows ever
My absolute FAVORITE Scouts show of all time! My favorite version of Maleguena, and of course the drill!
2 things I remembered about this show. The soprano soloist and the 8 man tenor line in the Drumline. Very rare to have the many, especially when they outnumber the snare line.
yeah. was supposed to be 8/8/6, but snare 8 flaked in like... may or june, and they ended up just going with it. i miss 6-bass Scouts basslines... they mirror the super-high brass arrangements so well, without losing the beef at the low end... but i'm nearing an old man complaint about the way everyone tunes 'em these days... and i don't even have a lawn anymore.... ;)

The drumline this year was HUGE. Most corps run 5 basses, 7-8 snares, and 4 tenors, but Madison decided to run 5 basses, 7 snares, 8 TENORS, and 4 cymbals just because they can.

This was definitely an odd lineup for them during the Jeff Moore era. They typically ran 6 tenors, 10 snares, and 6 basses.
Unfortunately it was only five basses after the opener. Poor guy on top bust his head at the end of the opener. How do I know? I was right behind him on drum two. But yes, there 6 basses on the field.
Hi Courtney. So happy you’ve come to be a Madison Scouts fan. I marched Scouts in 1998. Scouts’ hornline always prided itself on being extremely loud and powerful....they always say BYBO..Blow Your Balls Off. Ha ha.
98 was the first show that as a high schooler (in the 90s) made me absolutely cry 100%

The Madison Scouts went gender inclusive in December 2019, had a cancelled season in 2020, and a shortened one in 2021 where women and nonbinary folks were welcomed to the corp for the first time. I was lucky enough to be one of those first few sisters, and our show paid tribute to the Scouts of old while paving the way for a brilliant future. If you’ve got the time to check it out I highly recommend

Zach B 8 tenors was by design, 7 snares was because we lost one before the season. Show was originally designed for 6 bass, 8 tenor, 8 snare, 4 cymbal. That horn book was killer and we carried 7 lead sopranos for that show. 3 soprano parts. I was one of the 7 lead sopranos.

Just wanted to add that we didn't "loose" that dude off snare, he quit after the second show on the road. Then, homey had the freakin' huevos to show up a month later at a show in Minnesota (I think) wearing his freakin' jacket! I remember the staff walking back to the busses with it after they bought it back from him.

I also didn’t realize till I saw this again just now how clean the drill was. Drill with such small intervals and WHITE PANTS is almost impossible to clean, but they nailed it. Dang.

96 Part Dos - is a great show in the Madison Scouts history. I personally wasn't a fan of Bolero in this show. It kind of stunted the pacing of the program. Malaguena is always a Scouts classic (hard to beat 1988 version... but who cares?). The "Dream" in this show ( for me ) is Arturro Sandoval's - A Mis Abuelos (the opener). Probably one of the top 5 hardest "Spanish/Latin" charts in DCI history. Obviously, the soloist is a monster. Well done brother!
Scott Boerma's style of arranging brass for Scouts always amazed me. It was my honor to play his charts and be taught by him. I just want to point out that the general fan often goes earblind (yeah I'm making this up) to the range of the Soprano and Baritone book. You have to have 20+ stone cold killer sops to play a Boerma book. Almost all of your notes are so high above the staff that the general listener gets used to it as a "NORMAL" range ... IT'S NOT!!! Those dudes are screaming high notes the entire show.....as a section ...... AS A SECTION!!!! IN TUNE ON G BUGLES. Bust out a keyboard or a trumpet and transpose the notes you hear ..... you'll come to understand and hopefully appreciate the Scouts Brass Books of 89-06 and WHY they have so much sizzle and fire.
I agree about Bolero. When I was a young arranger someone asked me why drum corps always played so high. That is because the horns had a piston and a rotor or two valves. The lower range was not available. I don't think it was unique to Madison but you definitely had to have skills to make this stuff shriek.
We had 7 leads in ‘96. I was one of them and yes, that entire book spent a lot of the show above the staff. I believe the most common note we played in the lead book was an F# above the staff for the entire show. We had double Bb’s and double C’s written in the music. I still have the original charts 24 years later. I believe I still have an original lead chart for El Toro Caliente from ‘95, as well.

7 upper split leads, 5 lower split leads, 10 2nd soprano, and 10 3rd soprano parts. Again, if I recall correctly. I could be off in my numbers a bit.
I absolutely love her genuine reactions. Her attention to the nuances as well. The fact that she notices the “genuflecting” and appreciates it is awesome. Wish there were more people like her.

Fun thing to always look for in older/classic Madison Scouts shows is the very very end when the drumline plays what has come to be known as "Please Stand Up." Which very often, the audience would oblige.
Very often? Try always!
The beat at the end goes Please Stand Please Stand Please Stand UP!
The only problem is everyone is already on their feet by then, usually for the last 30-60 seconds of the show.
Unfortunately I cannot repeat what we yelled AFTER the please stand up beats. It’s a secret only for members, and the crowd is always so loud no one has ever heard it even though we scream it as loud as we can.
Legendary sop line, glad I got to see it. Scouts have always been underrated. That is dci, it’s not supposed to be an orchestra, but unfortunately the judges are classical guys. Power and ballsy solos that we remember for our lives. That’s why Scouts will always be fan favorites, and burned unjustly by judges.

I'm so happy to see people reacting to drum corps videos especially this one cause I marched with the racine scouts and was at just about every show Madison scouts were at and got to see their amazing performances live and in person from this show until 98 just amazing and wish I could have once been in the Madison scouts
In case no one else mentioned yet, during the quiet intro to Malaguena, someone in the audience yells "Spank Me!" That is followed by someone else replying, "Shut up!"

VK 95 is amazing! In fact, we were fortunate to pull some ridiculous talent from that corps to Madison for the tenor lines in 96 and 97 seasons.

I don't know if anyone said this previously already but prior to 2000, when the horns were still all keyed in G, Trumpets were Sopranos, Mellophones were Altos (Or mellos depending on the corps, the terms were interchangeable as far as I remember), Baritones and Euphoniums were both called Baritones (Depended on the Corps) and Tubas were Contrabasses. Once DCI allowed any key for horns starting in 2000, everything fell in line with mainstream Bb and F horns, so it became Trumpets, Mellos, Baris (or Euphs), and Tubas.
Someone might have already mentioned this, so sorry if I'm overexplaining. Also this show RULES.
Hi Courtney! Great review once again, and I love that you are becoming a fan of Madison! I saw them live way back in 1982, and the power, swagger and showmanship that they exhibited made me dream of one day being a member! That dream came true....I marched 89-90 as a Euphonium/Baritone....two of the best summers of my life!! And I got to do it again as a part of our Madison Scouts Alumni Corps in 2006 and 2014 in the Macy’s Parade! I love seeing all your reviews - not just for us, but for all the Corps...my favorite (other than us) is your 2008 Phantom Regiment review...how you were so moved by the sheer power and the emotional storyline! Anyway, enough of my yacking....just wanted to say great job!! Also...I would love to see you review my rookie season with the Madison Scouts - 1989! I’m sure you would also love our 1988 championship show!!

Love this show! I have it in my collection. I marched in 1975 and 1976 with Guardsmen from the Chicago suburbs. There were several nice corps in the Midwest USA. I marched against them several times. Great corps. We did not make finals in 75, so we bought tickets and saw Scouts win that year's DCI title! Through all the years, fantastic class and style of the great Madison Scouts!❤🎉

a friend of mine that i have taught with was one of or was the drill writer(s) for this show and he said it's still one of his favs of all time. He is currently a high school algebra teacher in Las Vegas.

If you liked that year you should watch the 1980 Madison Scouts. They did a version of "Through the Eyes of Love" from "Ice Castle's" that was fantastic.
Saw this show live in Wausau, Wisconsin. Was the first time I was exposed to drum & bugle corps. Been a fan ever since.
This was the first DCI show I ever heard! Before I knew anything about DCI and before seeing the video, I thought the horn line playing backfield sounded like violins during "Bolero".

Gotta watch Phantom Regiment 1996 as well. Definitely my favorite show in the history of DCI. It's just so dark and beautiful and epic. Oh! I see you've already done this :D

Drum and bugle ( brass instruments with TWO VALVES) corps, it’s crazy to think that only just recently did they switch over to standard trumpets and other three valved instruments , trombones ,synthesizers , guitars, keytars and voice.
I think the movement you are talking about that brass players do is when they do a "park and blow" section. Sometimes the brass arranged writes "BYBO" in the music. It stands for Blow Your B&%@£ Off 😂
It made me smile that she's starting to use drum corps terms right. This was a great show but definitely not 1995. Every corps has an identity, the 90s scouts were badass balls to the wall shows. The Madison Scouts always write shows that audiences want to see. Some corps write shows specifically to get points with the judges and completely miss with the crowd(2008-2013 Blue devils). In either '09 or '10 the Scouts design team actually told the judges they don't care what they think, they are just going for audience entertainment. Judges didn't exactly like that and took the corps a few years to climb out of that hole. MYNWA

The staff was going to critique after shows and hearing the judges comments and they just didn’t feel like the judges were “getting it” and that’s where the disconnect began. I don’t know if any of the staff attended critique the entire ‘96 season or any time after that under Scott Stewart’s direction.

This year was the only time I've ever tried out for drum corpse. I tried out for first base drum. Did my audition and they loved me. The catch was... The first base drummer they already had was trying out for snare. They said if he made snare I would get his spot but if he didn't... He was gonna go back to base drum. Well.... He didn't make it and went back to first base and I was basically screwed.
The top bass from ‘95 was a rook out so there was no top bass in place. As I was marching drum two, the details of your story do not compute.
@@ProudPapaJD You marched bass 2 for the ‘96 show? Cause if you did bravo. This is my all time favorite show of any year DCI. I was 13 at the time. I felt so bad for bass 1 busting the right head on A Mis Abuelos (sp?). But again if that was you, man you did a helluva job filling in for him when you could. My hats off to you, sir.

@@ProudPapaJD Oh man you’re a living legend. Yeah that is really unfortunate what happened! You know it’s kind of ironic because the lack of top bass during the snare break in Malagueña sounded intentional because of where the split was placed. It wasn’t until I saw late season rehearsal footage that I heard the full thing. Do you still have the book for that show cause I’d love to see it!
1996 was A Drum Corps Fans Dream part 2, 1995 was A Drum Corps Fans Dream part 1, both are equally amazing. I agree with you on the Latin music, it's definitely made for Drum Corps, the power and energy with it really gets your heart pumping. The Blue Devils played mostly this style music early on in their years.
There are lots of "A Day in the Life" of Drum Corps videos, they'll definitely give you a new perspective on what these musicians go through to be able to get out there and give their audiences the best performances they can. There are also videos that talk about scoring too.

So glad you are watching the glory years of DCI. It's more of an artistic interpretive dance fest now and I've lost one of the great joys of my life.
I agree with you 100% I've lost interest because now it's like watching marching bands. Real Drum Corps is a lost art form. I've been involved since I was nine years old military school learning to play snare drum oh, I played with the olph ridgemen, Floyd Bennett golden eagles 60 and 61, Long Island Sunrisers 64 through 68 Bill's boys first alumni Corps in the country early seventies and started American Spirit senior alumni Corps along with John Dowling who developed the art of back sticking and that was in the early 90s

Yes, they were sopranos. I sent this because there was a lot of cool soprano stuff which I think Latin music needs. They came in 6th and if you remember, this is the year that Blue Devils and Phantom Regiment came in with a tie for first, Madison is usually in your face exciting. I can see why they came in 6th but Madison is ALWAYS fun. Madison had no time to do the complete versions of both Bolero and Malaguena and that left me a little disappointed but I am VERY critical, to be sure. Why criticize something that has moments of intense excitement? lol
When I sent this video, I said I thought that "Bolero" slowed the show down. In watching your reaction, I saw you go kinda numb so I think you agree. It is not a drum corps melody.
You or someone else should pony up a C-note to request her to watch the 1988 show they did. IMO, a much better "Malaguena" in that one!

Fun fact: in quarterfinals, the Scouts tied with Phantom Regiment in ‘96 for 5th. 2 nights later, Scouts were in 6th and Phantom tied for first. Quite the jump that you don’t often see anymore.
i've seen the madison scouts. the casper troopers were also impressive. i watched them in the early seventies. i had friends that got to see the country in drum and bugle corps competitions. i think the troopers at that time were pretty standout. look up some of that stuff on you tube it's still out there. back then it was mostly rifle flipping, flags not so much. snare drums and bass drums not multi drums. the scouts looked like boy scouts. the troopers looked like the western calvary in the horse days. they would get to the end of the field and reverse in a perfect line with perfect unison in perfect step. it was pretty amazing.
You should check out the 82-83 shows (back on G-bugles) and their iconic version of Strawberry Soup. Back when we did concert style set pieces :D

Madison's Malaguena 1978 was the best version they performed IMHO. It was the opener instead of the closer and the sops set the place on fire

Courtney, did you happen to take note of the fact that in this era, the drums were still carried, whether snare or quad, rather than in "the pit"?
By the way, have you learned yet that they started out decades ago as a Boy Scout troop, which is why the Scout resembling uniforms.
At 5:00 was some of the song Bolero, which was worth a gold medal to the UK ice dancing duo Torval and Dean at the Lillehammer, Norway Olympics back in 1994. Then, at around 9:00, it was Malaguena (ma-la-GWAIN-yah), which started out decades ago as a classical guitar number.
One you should look up is from way back in 1976, when the Blue Devils played many of the popular songs of that era by Chuck Mangione (man-zhee-OWN-ee), including Legend of the 1-eyed Sailor.

3:44 I always wondered where my band directors got this move from. We did this in our fall '97 show. They just stole it.
I used to play the trumpet and I can't for the life of me figure out how that soloist can play with his cheeks puffed out like that. I know the great jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie used to play like that too, and I never figured out how he did it either, especially when trying to hit high scream notes. I tried to play like that one time when I was in junior high, and I hurt myself (we won't talk about that anymore).
I was taught to never puff my cheeks. I have noticed that several trumpet players who play super high play with cheeks puffed. I absolutely do not know the advantage of that.
You were right, Courtney. Pre-2000: Sopranos (trumpets, but in the key of G). Post 2000: Trumpets (key of B-flat). 😀
Courtney, the soloist usually had more free ranging movement/style back in those days. It was just the way to let loose/cut loose to add more "force" to the high notes. Sometimes whole hornlines would do it. It's just a matter of the music and timing and direction.

Do you know that almost all players are under 22 years of age, with a few exceptions due to when if their birthdays occur after June 1... The Scouts were all male until 2018, with 2 performance exemptions in in earlier decades

Apparently this was an all male drum corp until recently. They now accept women.
yup. was founded out of a boy scout troop in 1938, and was one of the last two to hold onto the tradition. this was going to be their first year as a co-ed corps... and as an old man who still wants every show to look and sound like this one, on g-bugles.... i'm so excited for them and proud to be an alum... let's hope they get to do it for real in 2021!

Best opener for me, period. Bolero was kinda weird and out of place to me, otherwise an amazingly written show. Crowd favorite without a doubt, pretty much 94-99 were their best programs.

That was the final year of Madison Scouts using G-Bugles. From 1997 on up to now they are using B-Flat Trumpets. G-Bugles pack a punch with the large front bell!
Madison scouts actually switched to B flat trumpets in 2001. Blue devils and cadets were the first corps to switch from g horns in 2000
@@Miyamotospoop13 You're both wrong...Scouts were on G bugles until 2004 when they switched. Also, Bb instruments weren't even legal in DCI until 2000...

Bb instruments were not even legal to use until 2000, when only BD and The Cadets switched over. As said already 2003 was the last G Scouts hornline.
