Video-So you are dealing with a starter on your Harley Davidson that activates and you can hear it spinning, but it doesn't engage the starter ring gear-thus it doesn't turn over the motor. You can hear the solenoid activate and pop out, but the starter motor just spins. In our experience this is clearly a starter clutch issue and it will need to be replaced. The good news is you don't need an entire new starter. Don't waste your money and trailer your Harley to a dealership or mechanic for repair. We can show you how to do this project right on the kickstand and right in your very own shop or garage. Just basic tools are needed and no specialty tools are required. Contact your Harley Davidson dealership to order the correct starter clutch for your year and model. The starter clutch can fail after years of use and these things happen.
In this video we show you exactly how to remove the Harley starter from the bike, take the starter apart, and replace the faulty starter clutch. We even show you how to remove the overhead oil tank to access the starter unit if you have such a model. Of course Touring and Dyna models have the oil tank below and the starter is much easier to get to, so you can fast forward through the oil tank removal part of the video if you have one of these other models. We also show you how to test the starter off the bike, so you can diagnose problems & test your repair before you install the starter back on the bike. We then show you how to put the starter back together correctly and install it back on your Harley.
What Harley Davidson Years & Model is This Video Best For?
From our knowledge, experience, and research, owner's of Harley's from 2006 & above with the six speed transmissions are who this video is for. Although it is likely this video would still be of much assistance to older model Harley's. Prior to 2006 and the six speed transmissions, you had to remove the inner primary for starter removal and replacement. 2006 & above Harley models with six speed transmissions do not require you to remove the outer or inner primary, so that of course is not in this particular video.
You will get the best of angles in this video and nothing is left to the unknown. It is as if you can reach out and turn a wrench with us and of course all our videos are in high definition.
Other Uses for this Video:
This video will help anyone removing a starter from their 2006 and above six speed transmission Harley Davidson model. You could be experiencing solenoid problems, a starter motor failure, or a failing starter clutch. This video will be extremely useful for any of those situations.
Do I need to remove the overhead oil tank to get at the starter?
There if little to no room to get up under the oil tank on many models to get the starter out. You can become very frustrated trying to get extensions, long hex head wrenches, or other home made tools simply to try and avoid removing the oil tank. Even if you get the bolts out you will have much difficulty trying to remove the starter, if you even can. You will likely end up angry and have to remove the oil tank anyways in the end.
So, we say just save the frustration and let us show you how to remove the overhead oil tank and get it out of your way. Then you can easily remove the starter and go to work on repairing it. It is better to do things correctly up front rather than becoming frustrated later.

Tatro and others do serious videos for mechanics. You must not be looking very hard. BTW the classics got along fine without videos. Buy or download the HD factory parts catalog and factory service manuals then go to FORUMS, not Spewtoob, and all you seek will be found!
If you own and love old classics you would think you know how to fix it yourself, every rookie and kid own these new Harleys today so they need help on learning 😈
I have a 07 ultra classic and I need to change out the starter and would really like it see a video first but I can't find a complete video on the process can anyone help

I’m replacing my starter on my 07 softail deluxe do I need to remove outer primary??
I got 02 road king i gotta replace mine as well. Do u know if I gotta open the primary cover to remove that screw. Im not sure if its the same as the electriglides
Yes, you need to pull the primary, just did my 02 Ultra Glide.
Ryan, I bought your video on the starter clutch removal/replace. I can't thank you enough for the info ~ I have the starter clutch out of the solenoid as I write this post. I understand I need to purchase another one and replace it according to your video yet nothing 'looks' wrong with the piece! What actually goes bad on this part? Will cleaning it correct it or not?
+buddydog1956 The starter clutch went out on our solenoid so it would punch out but not spin. Cleaning it didn't make a difference.

Hey I've got a 07 road King, cold starts its fine but hot it will not kick over untill I give it some throttle kinda sounds like it kicks back and there's a crunching sound, been told it's the clutch that's bad? What you think. And would this video cover my needs thanks
+Adrian Skurrie It's hard to tell without being there to look at the bike. Repairing the starter clutch should be the same, but removal and instal may be slightly different on the two models. I'd hate to say the video will work in the event there are too many differences.

Hard to say with out actually having our hands on your bike, but we'd say most likely the starter.

What if its just clicking and i tested fully charged reeding 13 on tester
I've used ball Allen's and a extension and never removed the oil tank on any of them give it a try they take me a little over a hour.
Don't you need to remove the outer primary case to access the pinion gear rod to release the starter motor gear???? I have 1995 FXSTC.
On yours you do. I just looked in the service manual for my '16 RG and it is not required. On my '06 SG the primary cover did have to come off. Not sure when that changed, I believe '07. I also noticed that to replace the stator on the '16, the inner primary has to come off. One step forward, two steps back.

Ryan, I have an '04 FXSTBI "NightTrain" which has several repetitive CLICKS in a row, when I press the starter button to turn on the bike, but it does not turn over the engine to start it up. I really do not mind purchasing a video that shows me how to repair or replace the starter but I just want to make sure that it is a starter problem. Battery is charged but drains when I try to start the bike. I used a jump starter but still the same problem, repetitive CLICKS. I was thinking of disconnecting the battery then trying to jump start it with the jump starter. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you Sir.
+Mario Rosales Mario, it's hard to be certain without being there. It sounds like a bad battery to me. I'd rule that out first since it's the cheapest. Pull it out and have it checked (specific gravity) to make sure it doesn't have a bad cell. If the battery is good I would move on to the battery.
I installed my new all balls starter clutch and now have this noise, I didn’t have it before, ang ideas why it wouldn’t work in my bike?

What did All Balls tech support say? BTW UA-cam is fine for videos but for tech questions use forums like hdforums, vtwinforum etc. A lot of noobs don't know forums exist but they are FAR better than UA-cam for tech questions.
No need to open the primary any way just the oil tank and than pull the starter, there is no nut from the primary side on new model from 2011

Ryan Urlacher no bikes of similar years? Aren't the setups similar? To remove the solenoid do I have to remove the primary? I see you took the oil tank off to get at it on this bike, would that be recommended for the 87 too?
