    Thanks for the video, thanks to your video I have successfully carried out a starter motor clutch assembly change 👍.Some of my own tips would be, watch out for the starter motor bolts are covered in the black paint … and it is difficult to get the sockets and spanner’s on until the paint has been chipped off … It is a little difficult to get access properly to the two bolts hold the starter motor in place … tip is just to tap the Allen socket in properly… The teeth on the old starter clutch assembly were clearly worn/damaged… my bike is starting just sweet now.. just need to take it out for the proper warm up test 👍👍

    Thank you for the video. I feel so much better knowing that replacing the starter will fix the issue. I have a 2008 Road King classic. I've taken it to Harley Davidson and they told me the same thing ...."it's the compensator." I was quoted $800.00. I have yet to taken it to the shop. I rather pay $140.00 for a new starter than $800.00.

    Been trying to find the guy who suggested hitting the start button within 1 second of the run switch, thank you,thank you, mine was making this very noise every start, not any more,'im not a mechanic but possibly letting the fuel pump get up to full pressure and cutting out before starting is putting extra pressure on the compression, don't know, only know it works, problem solved, for me anyway, yes putting a heavier starter will also work but why if you don't need to try this first.

    Hi Dawsy, Thanks a lot for the video! Glad I found someone with the same prob.
    HD Australia have been pretty hopeless about diagnosis over the phone and closest HD shop is 4 hrs away.
    I upgraded my 96ci to 103 and this started happening. If I start it out front of the pub the whole place goes into silence and just stares, I'm cursing it out under my breath = Embarrassing!! Do you think I'd have to go for a larger starter? Cheers:)

    I heard that the 96 cu inch motors had another problem, High Compression bad starting problem. And the fix would be compression release valves drilled into the heads. That's what they did in the 103 cu in. I have the same noise when the motor is hot. I wonder if Harley would have put in a better starter and a battery with more CCA to turn that high compression engine over easier would have stop it from wrecking starters. just a thought , what do you think?

    • @Dawseyandsons
      @Dawseyandsons  5 років тому +2

      I like the compression release idea. I had no idea the 103s had that. I don't know enough about auto electronics to say either way, I wish I did. I know I have heated my wiring up really hot when one of my engines was too tight after rebuild . No matter how much juice I put to the starter it was hard to start because compression and tightness to I was melting my electrical. So I am not sure adding more CCA would help but I really don't understand it as well as I would like to...yet (trial and error eventually we figure it out).

    Bet I could of found the answer in the comments. For the 08 ultra remove the oil filler cap and pack it with a paper towel so nothing comes in and it’ll come out no problem. Was about to take off the exhaust but found another vid after digging in the good book (Haynes manual)

I replaced mine last night and the night I started it, it had a bad high pitched noise, I found out that there is already a ball bearing in it, so I removed the second ball I had installed. thanks mister. mine is 2010 and I just started getting that sound. looks like a fairly easy fix. going to change this sooner than later. could easily leave you stranded somewhere. - there did not look like there were any teeth missing on your old gear. @@scann13 so I cleaned up the copper contacts and its been working for about a year now but one time, you could hear that it wasn't engaging fully. I suspect this is because those original copper contacts are not making a good enough contract. They get pitted from the electricity. Easy fix though. The parts are not too expensive on Amazon or ebay. I was planning to re-do mine to be on the safe side. www.amazon.com/Harley-Davidson-Starter-Solenoid-31604-06/dp/B01MA3JY9P/ref=sr_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=harley+solenoid&qid=1586773970&sr=8-14

    It isnt the starter clutch. Ive a 2008 same problem . Was harley engineering mistake. I had to pay 550.00 for parts and tear the whole ass end off the bike. God only knows the price for harley mechs to do the work. The inner primary comes off to replace the rotor with a different width one. The stator remains standard. Unlike shovelheads that you can access everyrhing by removal of the outer primary case , the inner primary wont allow rotor removal. It was a big job and i have wrenched harleys for a living .Screaming eagle was the first to make a new compensator setup. Many hi pro aftermarket companies now have a repair kit .Harley lied to the mechanics at authorized dealers and left the mechanics to deal with pissed off consumers. They had no idea what the problem could be . So they claimed .They did NOT want a recall as too many bikes were assembled with the troubled parts. However screaming eagle IS the hi pro side of Harley. so they admitted guilt by marketing the repair kit . The cheapest repair is to eliminate the compwnsator completely running just the sprocket. I know many dealer mechanics and weve had a lengthy disussion over this. Harley sucks . They fucked their customers knowingly and then lied. We are not talking a few bikes , but literally thousands and thousands of harleys . They are undeserving of devoted followers. I wish you could have read this before jumping into your starter. After my softail and roadking wear out Im going back to Ducati. Piss on harley for selling out the mechanics and you .

    • @Dawseyandsons
      @Dawseyandsons  5 років тому +5

      Sure you could. But really they are two different parts. In some motorcycles and ATVs they aren't as closely attached. You could replace the whole unit but it would be more expensive. Also you do not need to buy the starter from HD. They will rip you off. HD wanted $800 for a starter for my old electraglide. These starters are not american-made they are simply hitachi or similar starters found in tons of vehicles such as honda accords etc. Another cheaper options is get a rewind/rebuild place to fix them for dirt cheap.
