I like how you skipped over t ightning every bolt, like the other reviews have said. Nice and to the point, very well done. Thank you, as I{m getting ready to take my starter out.
Thanks for posting the instruction video. You saved me a lot of time. My 1st starter changeout on a bike. On older cars they just slide right out without having to take the long bolt out through the primary side. If you are ever in Cali I'll be glad to buy you a beer.
Facing this job myself I found your video. Very well done, audio was good and editing was spot on, showing is what we need to know and not wasting time showing every bolt getting tightened. THANK YOU for taking the time, it was a big help to me.
You saved me a heck of a lot of money. Thought I might need to go to Harley for this one! If you're ever in Nashville, IN I would gladly buy you a beer.
I replaced the starter on my 2007 Dyna Street Bob, I didn't have to take apart the primary, you can take it off and slide it in from the other side, just two bolts and a few electrical connections. Easy peasy.
I know the video is old now, but very informative and nice job getting clear shots of everything. My 09 Ultra is making an awful hammering sound occasionally. Told may need new updated compensator. Bike has 68k and may be time.
for the starter bolts use a ball Allen socket...and a 95 ultra and 2000 dyna are completely different...on the ultras you may have to remove the filler spout unless you hold your mouth just right
Great how to do video. But invest in a $20.00 torque wrenchbfrom harbor freight. It will pay for itself in the long run. With no keaks and no stripped threads. Also only fill the primary to the outer ring of the clutch spring. More fluid does not add to the cooling of the clutch. In fact over filling will cause clutch slip and hard finding gears. Im a 12 year harley tech and 2 time National Champion drag racer.
juanjohnism working on a friends softtail with a EV2 engine. Got it running. The engine wouldn't crank. Bench tested the starter and it worked. Took the ground cable off the frame and the bike started right away. This lasted for a little over a month. He gets on the bike to go home Saturday and the bike won't start again. What would cause the starter to spin but not engage?
I have a 95 Ultra Classic. I followed all the steps and the starter is loose and ready to come out. However, the oil filler/dip stick assembly is in the way. Do I have to drain the oil and remove all this or is there a 'trick' I'm missing. Thanks, Dave
Hey i have a 98 wide glide and need to replace the jackshaft and ring gear. The ring gear is tapered on one side and flat on the other which side (i think tapered) goes towards starter? My oem ring gear is flat both sides. With jackshaft does spring go on after star washer or before. Again this is all diff from original. I bought drag specialists parts. Any help is appreciated.
i replaced a starter on a 98 fatboy. when i put the primary on it sounds like the jack shaft just spins. any advice on the tightening even with red lock tight
+sempercompellis - I just had to tap mine the other day. I just hit it on 3 different sides with a wrench and it fired right up. It was making a clicking sounds like the battery was dead but my battery read 12.05. I do have a new starter in my possession now and am watching this video for some install tips.
Leave it to Harley to place the location of the critical charging system components, in the wrong location. The starter should be in front of the engine where the cooler air can get it running much longer, instead of under the battery and right behind the hot rear cylinder to shorten the life span of such a critical component, and you have to disassemble the primary housing, gasket, and all to just replace a starter. Wait till your stator burns out, which happen quite often on these bikes, another critical, charging system component, hidden and encased in the primary side housing, right up against the hottest part of the engine, the lower crankcase where heat is excessive, and it is encased in a metal magnetic rotor too, so no heat dissipation occurs, so, get ready to disassemble the primary chain drive and clutch basket and compensator, to get to the stator, to change it out often if you ride at all.
Its a Twin Cam John. 1989 - 2006 took a similar starter. 89-93 used a smaller 1/4 20 jackshaft bolt. 94-06 used a 10- 32 threaded bolt. Hope that helps.
I cant for the life of me figure out why you disassembled the primary cover and removed the starter drive gear? Both new and rebuilt starters come complete, including the drive gear. There is nothing keeping the starter from being removed as a complete unit. Also, if you are tapping on the old starter to make it work you probably just need the copper contact kit that goes in the end of the solenoid. The kit is about $25.
No Earl, You fill the Primary up to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring, as viewd from the derby cover opening, no more. It generally will be just under 1 quart. I do this several times a week.
@@t.s.racing Only a dumb ass fills any primary through the derby cover. You fill them through the inspection plate and use one quart and they will last longer
You probably could have put in a solenoid kit from the other side without having to remove the starter. It sounded like your solenoid was the problem, not the starter.
I see you removed the starter with out removing battery and battery bracket... I did not have the room to do this.. was easier with battery and bracket off
haha "find a good spot" WTF there is no "good spot" to bash a screwdriver into a gasket/sealing surface!!! overfill the primary to keep it cool??!! didn't replace the lock tab on the jackshaft?!! no bolts torqued to spec. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT MAKE "HOW TO" videos when they have no idea what there doing.
This was the worst want to be Harley wrench ever... want to learn how to work on a Harley ? watch the '' John Maxwell '', you tube videos. Master tech at a Harley Dealership. Great Videos.
I am replacing mine now I am running into a problem with when it is all back together the jack gear kicked out but won’t turn the main shaft that goes into the starter turns but the gear will not what am I doing wrong
Jasmyn Dore: I see you don't dispute any facts, just saying "you are full of it", means nothing to thinking persons or contributes anything to any kind of meaningful conversation or comment on the problems associated with the charging system. It means you don't know anything about a bike.
just coz you can parrot crap off google about hd charging system don't mean you know what your talking about. I have no interest in a meaningful conversation.... people should just know your full of it!
I like how you skipped over t ightning every bolt, like the other reviews have said. Nice and to the point, very well done. Thank you, as I{m getting ready to take my starter out.

pro tip : watch series on flixzone. I've been using it for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Ian Benicio Yea, been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself :D

Old but still a great, vid im here 5yrs later.
seems like a cool dude also..
Nice trick with the tape on the gasket, thanks!
thanks bro..i realy like the way you explan how to replace the stater...100% good feedback
Great video and no stupid background music. Outstanding 👍
Really helpful video - better than a shop manual!
unbelievable! this video shows exactly what NOT to do! c'mon people!
Great job of explaining, thank you so much for sharing.
Did you try installing a $20 starter solenoid rebuild kit before tearing into the starter removal?
Thank you for the video. It was very useful to me. But wonder why didn't you try to fix the starer with starter rebuild kit ?
Excellent instructional video many Thanks
I'm honestly shocked how much difference there is between my 1995 FXDWG and your bike, great video though.
for the starter bolts use a ball Allen socket...and a 95 ultra and 2000 dyna are completely different...on the ultras you may have to remove the filler spout unless you hold your mouth just right
Amen brother you help me out with a bunch 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I see the long allen wrench you used, think that would help. versus socket and extension
Thanks. I need to do this to my 2009 street bob. Hope things are similar.
This man! I don't got a harley yet but I want one of these! I got a 81 Suzuki gs750L as my first, it's "harley" enough for me lol
If your still around could you let me know what size heads are the two mounting bolts please, thanks.
Really good video, thanks for that

thought the oil was abit excessive correct level is the best way

Why is there a bolt on the muffle of the starter mine doesn’t have that
Thank you for this video god bless 😎🤙🏽

Great Job Brother, thanks for the info, it helped us out. God Bless.

Thanks for the video 🍻🍻
Im from mexico, nice video
Great video. Let me ask you is it the same steps for 04 fxstd deuce? Thanks.
you should do a vid on the "hammer trick" ; never heard of that. when do you tap the starter with a hammer ?
+sempercompellis - I just had to tap mine the other day. I just hit it on 3 different sides with a wrench and it fired right up. It was making a clicking sounds like the battery was dead but my battery read 12.05. I do have a new starter in my possession now and am watching this video for some install tips.
Lisa Ilminen did it fix the problem
The tapping didn't but the new starter did! This video was such a huge help!
That peg in the mid control position is the worst peg I've ever ridden on. It's so squishy it feels so dangerous
Good video mate cheers 👍
Thanks! Very good!
Is this the same for 2006 fxdb?
Altlandf- you most likely need a starter clutch. They are easy to put in.
Leave it to Harley to place the location of the critical charging system components, in the wrong location. Great video. Very good detail.
what motor is that? i have a EVO motor in my 86 Electra glide. Is that the same starter? it looks simular
Its a Twin Cam John. 1989 - 2006 took a similar starter. 89-93 used a smaller 1/4 20 jackshaft bolt. 94-06 used a 10- 32 threaded bolt. Hope that helps.
Why is using a piece of wood better than using a hammer, the proper tool?
Thanks very very much.
Great job...thanks!
Thx a Lot for this Video
In the next video, we'll cover how to replace your entire transmission when a weakened locktab fails, falls into your gears and destroys it.
That primary case holds 38 oz of oil people, meaning one quart plus 6oz,
No Earl, You fill the Primary up to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring, as viewd from the derby cover opening, no more. It generally will be just under 1 quart. I do this several times a week.
@@t.s.racing Only a dumb ass fills any primary through the derby cover. You fill them through the inspection plate and use one quart and they will last longer
Good info thank...
What is your dilemma ?
Seriously no need to add extra oil. Usually you want to run a little less then recommended, makes finding neutral a breeze.
why are you using 2 screw drivers... take out the last bolt. cover comes off easy
I like the part where you hammer screw drivers into the case 😬
You probably could have put in a solenoid kit from the other side without having to remove the starter. It sounded like your solenoid was the problem, not the starter.
Thanks bro
hi
out of all the videos on here i watched yours and it seems u know what youre doing...but im stuck now...help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What you get stuck on m
I see you removed the starter with out removing battery and battery bracket... I did not have the room to do this.. was easier with battery and bracket off
did not show removing the round part from the starter shaft, with the internal clip
engine nut 351 400.
I would like to see 2001 superglide starter replacement. Not 2005.
Nice Brooo
i have a few questions...if u can get back to me i would appreciate it
There is so much not to do in this video. Anyone new watching this, please consult your factory service manual.
That's all good but dont ever start one cold and blast off like that or the next video will be headgasket replacing
Lol German Specs, Goodntight!! Fuck a torque wrench! LOL..
Yo why'd u cut so much?
How to leave out important details of starter replacement lol
You skipped over EVERYTHING when it comes to aligning everything on the reinstall
not a drop of locktite was used.. wtf..
haha "find a good spot" WTF there is no "good spot" to bash a screwdriver into a gasket/sealing surface!!! overfill the primary to keep it cool??!! didn't replace the lock tab on the jackshaft?!! no bolts torqued to spec. PEOPLE SHOULD NOT MAKE "HOW TO" videos when they have no idea what there doing.
and never trust torque wrenches from harbor freight....
