    • @petesantoro2827

      1st thing to do is make sure that you have a fully charged battery. Minimum voltage is 9.6vdc to start. If it’s falls below that, it may or may not engage at all. Also, low voltage can possibly caused the solenoid plunger to stick, and stay in start the position. Another thing to check is the starter relay. If your battery is hot and this issue continues, then it’s time to replace the starter drive. With so low mileage, I would begin at the battery.

    • @Chris-0113
      @Chris-0113 2 роки тому +2

      @@mikechildress6073 From what I've found in my research, it's caused by an undersized starter Harley used and the engine "kick back" that happens sometimes when you turn off the bike. I replaced the race gear with an aftermarket one from "AllBalls" and haven't had an issue. That gear has roller bearings inside of it and will only roll one way. So when the engine does that kick back, it plays hell on that gear. I've seen some people also install a stronger aftermarket starter to resolve the issue. Can't confirm this is the cause, but that's what I've found in my research.

      @@Chris-0113 Do you remember what models were affected by the undersized starter?

    • @Chris-0113
      @Chris-0113 Рік тому

      @@Sinehmatic I just remember it being the 1200cc Evo engines. Not sure about particular years that were effected or just all of them. From what I read, Harley used the same undersized starter on the 1200 that they used on the 883. Just doesn't have enough torque for the 1200 with a higher compression than the 883, especially in hot climates.
      But since my original post, I ended up replacing the entire starter, due to the same issue. I went with a higher kilowat starter from Allballs and have had zero problems since. The new starter turns the engine over much faster and without hesitation and no engine kickback.

    Hey great video. I know this was posted a year ago already, but I just came across it because my 2005 sportster 1200 roadster is making a sort of grinding noise when I start it with the engine hot. Never does it from a cold start… only when I stop for gas or something like that, shut off the engine, and then go to restart the bike soon after shutting off. It makes the grinding noise but then always starts right up immediately after. Doesn’t do it all the time from a hot start either. Anyone know if this would be the starter clutch, or something else?

      While I agree with your logic, the rebuild kits for the starter solenoid, clutch, and brushes would still be worth redoing. Starter will in essence be “new” internally, but same housing. And you still saved money. Yes, the labor involved is crazy for these starters, especially if you hv to remove an oil tank and primary cover like some bikes, but it’s still worth peace of mind in my opinion to redo the internals since your already there. Starters are actually still cheap and easy to repair.
