      I owned both the A7S3 and the R5… which is essentially the same image as the R5C. I do agree that the Sony has better dynamic range… but from your comment at 2:35 I can tell you must not have shot with the Canon Eos R3. Because the new sensor in the R3 matches the dynamic range of the C70… which I also owned. The Eos R3 beats the both the Sony A7SIII and Canon R5C in dynamic range and Low light performance… it’s not even close. Check my channel for some footage and ISO testing.

    This debate is unnecessary I think. If we talk about the cinematic, we have to think about the codecs.....Sony FX3 sucks. I had it and that made me sell it... Canon is more professional in that sense. Lastly, the image quality... Sony is very digital, very clinical, Canon is much more cinematographic and organic. Finally, Sony's prices are insanely expensive...it's just a brand name.

    Are all shots in this video done on both the R5c and siii? Or are some shots done on your Lumix S5? For example the shot at 6:17 with the deep blue sky? As much as I'd like to have either one of these cameras, just realizing I can buy an S5 body (they're on sale at BnH) at almost a 3rd of the price of 1 R5c! The lenses and other gear I could buy with the extra money saved... But, if you have that kind of money to spend then you can't go wrong with either the sony or the canon

    I used to have the A7SIII, now I have R5C. Sometimes I miss the Sony, sometimes I am super happy with the Canon. Both of them can do amazing quality and almost any project is doable with either. What gave it off to me immediately was the difference in the stability as one of them has an IBIS and one of them doesnt and it shows in a test conducted like this.

    Thanks for the video. For me, camera choice depends on use-case scenario. For run-and-gun documentary work, I still use the GH5 with micro four thirds glass, that's the lightest setup I have. For cinema work (fiction shorts, music videos, independent films), I currently use the Lumix S1. I'm sorely tempted by the Canon though, because - 1. RAW (8K 60P) [which is probably why they have that fan], 2. RF lenses / EF lens compatibility with EF-RF Variable ND adapter. I love IBIS for documentary work, but I never use it for fiction. Fiction clients still want me to rent an Alexa or Red. And for indie/smaller projects and as a discreet B-Roll Cam, R5 C is the perfect camera. Not to mention that its DSLR-esque look doesn't grab too many eyeballs when trying to shoot more discreetly. I like the Sony systems, but half my fiction clients would balk a the idea of not shooting RAW (and they really don't care about technical details of 10 bit vs 12 bit etc etc. The standard deliverable for the post studios is RAW).
    And again, RF mount with the EF-RF ND adapter is superb, since the cinema glass I can rent is mostly either PL or EF mount. And with the EF glass I essentially have a "built-in ND" solution with the adapter. E mount options in cinema glass do exist, but aren't available as easily yet. Thanks again for the video!

      In my experience it's quite easy to achieve good highlight rolloff for skin with Canon c-log 3 by correcting with curves instead of luts. Canon log to rec 709 luts tend to have too much contrast.

  • @angela-r
    @angela-r 2 роки тому +4

    This was a perfect review of the two. You're so right about Canon. They just can't seem to get it right in one body. IMO, the most important features for a camera used for video are 1) No overheating, or at least not after such a short time or in the sun. Many professionals shoot outdoors (events, weddings, etc.) and they can't afford to have the camera they're using for video or photos (or both) overheat. I won't buy any camera with this as its crutch. Canon should never have released the R5 and advertised it for 8k when it overheats after just 25 minutes of filming in 8k. What professional is going to feel confident using that? 1) Great autofocus. There's no excuse for poor autofocus these days. We need to rely on focus, especially if we're getting paid for our shoots (weddings, events, etc.). 3) Great IBIS. I realize that there are gimbals to use in the absence of great IBIS for video, but those are a pain: time to setup, batteries / charging to deal with, bigger, heavier, etc. Panasonic has VERY good IBIS, but unfortunately their autofocus is not reliable. 4) Long battery life - This is a must. I see so many people saying they add the large PD USB-C batteries to their setup, but that's just one more thing to attach to your gear - to make it heavier, bulkier. It just seems unnecessary. In 2022, and we shouldn't have to change a battery on a higher end camera after just an hour of shooting.
    Thanks for the review! (New subscriber. :))

      The R5 does not overheat anymore.

    • @costinvaly1
      @costinvaly1 2 роки тому

      The Sony A7SIII also overheats in direct sunlight so you can’t just hold Canon accountable for it. I own both systems my assistant shoots with the Sony and one time he came at me with the joke “I thought I was using your camera for a sec” showing me the overheating sign and I never expected to see that from a Sony camera.
      And I’m sorry but you can’t complain about battery life when it comes to the kind of technology we’re being spoiled with nowadays, it’s not like we can have the “2022 tech/features” at no extra power costs. The R5C has more pixels to work with, two operating systems installed/stored within the body, a ton of cine-features with algorithms that demand processing power, etc.
      It’s easy for us to demand it more battery life, but we have to be part of a camera R&D team of engineers to have an idea what is technically possible and whatnot.
      I mean, we all know there’s not just DSLRs/Mirrorless cameras in this world, there are also cinema cameras (actual cameras that most AAA movies gets shot with) and they have a huge brick 🧱 battery attached to it. They even mount an ARRI Alexa mini (also with a bricky battery) on a heavy duty gimbal (movi) or Arri’s own steadycam system that’s attached to one single human and they don’t complain carrying and operating dozens of pounds on their body to achieve some great footage.
      And IBIS/Focus tech on either the Sony or Canon cameras are heaps beyond what we used to have 6 years ago. Were weddings not possible to shoot on Canon DSLRs for example, 9 years ago just because “autofocus wasn’t good enough”?
      I feel like your comment portrays ungratefulness in a way… Almost as if you started shooting for the past 12 months with only recent equipment and that you’ve never felt the luxury we considered we had even 10 years ago. The tech of a decade ago was still incredible and a luxury at its time.
      The R5C is a monster of a camera for example and in Gerald Undone’s reviews for both it and the A7SIII, if you compare his Imatest DR results in each review, the R5C has better DR in most areas which is crazy for a Canon camera. And the R5C between iso100 - iso10.000 has better low light performance than it’s Sony counterpart (FX3), watch the R5C vs FX3 low-light test by a UA-camr called Josh.

    For me its got to be the R5C. The UI and LED screen on canons just makes it such a joy to use, Yes the battery is a bit of a downer but then again this is more of an all round camera compare to the A7SIII and one definitely isn’t just going to buy the R5C to vlog. For anyone pro looking for a camera to just vlog, R5C isn’t it. • @jimmystewartuk
      @jimmystewartuk 2 роки тому

      @@cr8withnate My problem with the C70 isn’t saying it is a bad camera. It’s just that in comparison the C70 is still relatively big and heavier to handle on camera support. Also it’s one to be heavy because of the build quality, the C70 as far as I could tell from almost all the users, the build quality is compromised because of the screen. Canon basically created a camera to fill the gap, making a truly small cinema grade camera in a tiny body. The R5C although doesn’t have the DGO sensor, the image quality still looks good enough (not demonstrates properly in this comparison) and managed to maintain the size / weight of a mirrorless. Also the built quality issue seem to have resolved. I would obviously have to confirm this myself once I get a R5C in my hands. But as far as I could tell from lots of research, it’s looking good here.

    I like the R5C, have had one for a week and a half and had a chance to use it in a few different situations, once using it as a stationary cam on auto ISO to film a dance with wide ranging lighting conditions throughout the show, next for a traditional interview set up. For the dance, it performed great, read the changing lights perfectly, and the colors and sharpness of the image was superb. It's great that it has the cinema menu, which offers a lot more fine tuning than R6 which I also have. The battery life is definitely the biggest concern as it only lasted about 60-65 mins with a full charge running 1080, but am in process of getting an external power source which hopefully solves the problem. Never liked Sony colors, they've definitely gotten better over the years, but it still feels like it's got a look whereas Canon just seems like vibrant rendition of the colors you see.

I remember Sony had overheating issues with their first several mirrorless cameras and their battery life was terrible too . Seems a little biased. Why fan on Canon and not Sony(low megapixels) because Canon is a 8k sensor (high megapixels) and it is more work to oversample it to 4k. The R5c is a true hybrid best at both stills and video. The R5 is a photo centric hybrid, better at stills, ok at video. The A7s3 is a video centric hybrid better at video but mediocre at stills(low megapixels). This video should be called comparing the 4k of both, that's basically what you did. Definitely not a fair comparison of overall video options, capabilities etc.

    My priorities are resolution, fps and unlimited recording in that highest resolution, fps and bitrate. Thats why for me the R5C comes clearly before the R5 (30 min limit), A7s (4k only) and the S5 (recording limits in 10 bit and crop in 4k over 30p). I use the camera mainly to record concerts of myself and I can have a picture of the complete orchestra and still a sharp image when zooming in on me. Its just perfect!

      @@faisalghiar but unfortunately still has a recording limit for whatever reason… I was shortly looking into the Z9 before ordering the R5C but the 2h recording limit is not enough for my concerts and there are a lot of video codec options missing (e.g. 8k hevc 10 bit 4:2:0, which I want to use for recordings up to 5 hours on my 2TB Angelbird). The N-RAW is nice, but doesn’t work with Premiere and Final Cut for now and there is no ProRes RAW 8k (and even if there were, the file sizes would be impossible). The AF in Video and Photo is also basically the same, so no logarithmic focus curves, face only AF and so on… But most importantly for me: I need an 85 1.2! I shoot 90% of my stills with that lens and the Nikon one is just not coming out… so no, for me the Nikon package is way worse than the Canon offering :/

    • @patrick.munich
      @patrick.munich 2 роки тому

      @@Sleeping_coder If you are any bit serious about video you have at least a cage anyway and therefore mounting a battery is really no problem. I have the smallrig cage for the R5C with the Shinobi on top and the FXLion Nano Two to the side. The one battery can power the monitor and the camera for 6h, so really no problem. I would have done this solution for the monitor anyway, since it is very top heavy with the Sony batteries mounted directly to it. The battery life in the R5C really is a non-issue if you are any bit serious about video, since you always use some kind of external battery on your rig. I also have the battery grip for photography and when I switch to video mode, I can do 75 minutes in 8k30, so really no problem :)
