    Like many ex-Canon users, we loved the image but disappointed with lack of video features (ALA Panasonic inventions), but you helped restore our faith in Canon somewhat, so it's back on the wishlist pending further reports on its ability and viability, Thanks for the review.

      I'm not a pro and I know why! Helps to explain the point. Pro's want to be in control, not having the camera doing its own thing. A good example is filming in moving vehicles when IBIS does it's best to make the exterior look shake free and shows the interior talent bouncing about. Been difficult enough to get pro's to accept Canon AF!

    • @peterra2532
      @peterra2532 2 роки тому +3

      I consider myself a pro because I work full time in video, and I can tell you that the IBIS is very useful in some cases. For example in handheld shots or just with a cage/handle or a shoulder rig. Where it’s annoying these it’s when shooting with gimbal or tripods…it was also said that the pros didn’t need AF…why it is available on this r5c?
      We all know that they removed the IBIS because the battery will not support this additional charge and Canon protects the other camera ranges. Look at the sony cinema cams (fx3 and fx6), they have IBIS, as well as the panasonic s1h (which is netflix certified….)

Also in stills mode, what happens when you hit the video record button - does it default to whatever codec you last used in Cinema EOS mode?

    Thanks for this great comparison. I would love to hear something about AF differences as well, since the video side of the R5c uses DPAF 1 rather than DPAF 2 in the R5. I already know that animal eye AF is absent in the video side of the R5c, but is touch tracking absent as well, and is the video AF performance also more sluggish in the R5c? It would be great to hear more about the differences in these important features. Thanks!

    Interesting results with the 120fps. I was hoping they wouldn't compromise image quality here but it looks very soft compared to the other modes. I thought the down sampled HD was extraordinary for detail, almost looks 4k, I thought sharper than the 4k 120. This makes me think. If you shoot HD 120fps would it be down sampled and result in a better image than the 4K 120fps?

    i currently have had a Canon 80D for a long time and have been depsertley researching for months on different full frame cameras for both high quality photography along with stunningly crisp Video for a number of scenarios. I have been buying alot of Sigma Lenses that are EF mount which sucks because the cameras that are obviously better are ones like the Sony A7siii, Sony A7R V, Canon R5 (What I am most leaning towards) which all have different mounts that I would buy adapters to fit my current lenses. I have been debating for so long but deserve an upgrade in quality from what I currently use. Any recomendations on any cameras I did not mention or any I did mention! Do you think the R5 would be perfect for me? I would really appreciate any suggestions from people who have used many different cameras and would like to help me buy the perfect one!

    *I don't know why so many folks are pushing the 4K capabilities of 8K cameras these days ? I can certainly understand the obvious advantages of being able to reframe and zoom in without quality loss if you're delivering in 4K DCI. Frankly, I don't want to acquire an 8K camera to shoot in 4K. If I wanted to shoot in 4K, then the Canon C70 is the 4K production DCI way to go, but if you are shooting for Cinema production, then you want True 24.00p @ 8K DCI resolution, or at least Ultra, Ultra 8K resolution. Netflix will soon up their delivery resolution, and I want to be ready for that ASAP. There are several other basic, practical considerations, which go against the R5C. One is the need to connect external power to shoot in 8K. The Nikon Z9 has a power house huge capacity internal battery, which end users are reporting up to 3 Hours of 8K shooting per charge ! This long running time per battery charge in 8K is a big plus on the set indeed. Grab three of these Z9 batts and you're set for most of the day, as you're charging one batt while shooting with another. Also, the ability to shoot internally in ProRes RAW HQ in 8K kicks butt because you don't have to rig any external recorder to grab an 8K resolution file in the right codec (ProRes), so the turn around can be much easier and faster for post. You also have IBIS in the Z9, and IBIS generates overall steadier images in documentary/reality TV production IMHO. The only negative I can see using the Z9 and in favor of the R5C is the lack of True 24.00p speed. Hopefully, Nikon will soon remedy this deficiency via a firmware update (??)*

    • @Yupthereitism
      @Yupthereitism 2 роки тому

      The z9 is good but is much heavier, has worse lenses, costs more, has worse autofocus, has less older lens compatibility, has inferior colors, and has no mechanical shutter. Overall the canon is better at stills and video while being more affordable. Pretty obvious choice here.

    • @markjob6354
      @markjob6354 2 роки тому

      @@Yupthereitism Uhhh, wait a minute. Some of your statements here do not ring true. Your claim Nikon has worse lenses than Canon is utterly FALSE ! Nikon glass is amoung the sharpest glass you can slap on the front of any camera. The movie industry has been adapting Nikon glass for use on PL mount motion picture and RED cameras for several years just because of this fact. Your claim of worse auto focus is also inaccurate. The Z9 has corrected most, if not all, of the autofocus deficencies which caused earlier cameras to under perform next to Canon cameras. Inferior colours you also claim ? I would agree with you for the most part of this being true with past models, but all of the test footage I have seen thus far from the Z9 shows a great improvement as well on that front. No mechanical shutter you wrote ? So ? Who cares ? What difference does that make ? I'm looking at the Z9 more from a video shooter's POV and not from a stills POV, so it's a non-issue anyway. The Canon is (less) affordable than the Z9. The choice is not so obvious to me, as battery running time of Canon cameras is a big issue of importance in my work. Nikon has a huge battery lasting up to 3 hours in heavy use, so having 3 or four of them should cover a whole day's shoot. I suppose one can always power via the USB-C port from a larger external battery.

    Wish you would have shown the ten second delay when switching from stills to video on the R5C. that can be a deal breaker for certain hybrid shooters and hence an advantage for R5/R6/R3 where switching modes is instant. That said, having all the cinema assist features inside R5C is a game changer if you can deal with the reboot time delay. One question I have for Carl: when going from OFF position to stills does the camera start up immediately? is it only when OFF to video that the delay happens? Or only when switching from video to photo and vice versa?

      I show this in our main video. In fact I say that for some people they will be better off with the R5, A1 or S1H because of it. Personally though I much prefer having access to the cinema eos UI that is designed for video work with video features.

    Im slightly regretting buying this. Haven’t fired it on yet but lack of ibis, no custom video modes, the image quality looks the same as r5, shit battery life, delay in switching from video to photo mode…i mean what is the point of using this over the r5? I have both cameras and shooting tomorrow. Im seriously thinking about just using the R5. Why are we paying more for a bulkier lesser version of the same camera?

    You said the R5 is one of the best lowlight cameras from Canon. I would disagree with that completely. The C500 MK 2 is always cleaner and brighter than a similar set up from R5 that always needs a denoise. With my research, the R5 needs to ETTR every time or the noise becomes insane. Maybe I got a lemon but other than that, I’m interested in the R3 or R5C has to offer

    • @ProAVTV
      @ProAVTV  2 роки тому

      Very true, the C500 II is also very good. Are you comparing raw or XFAVC though? As the raw on the R5 will be noisier due to resolution.

      @@ProAVTV referring to both of the cameras in their raw formats. I use them both on productions for music videos and it is already an accomplishment of how comparable the R5 is to a $16k camera but if you are shooting dark, the differences begin to widen.
      It just baffles me that the R5 is technically dual native but I never noticed a edge in lowlight.

    As far as I'm concerned the r5c is infinitely better than the more expensive c70. The only real downside is that the r5c doesn't have built in ND filters (which if that really bothers you, the ef to rf with built in ND can fix that for you), but to be fair, as fair cinema production goes, Matte boxes are usually used regardless of built in ND filters. So really it doesn't make it any less of a cinema camera.
    The bigger problem in my opinion is how Netflix hasn't approved the r5 or r5c yet but has approved the c70. Why they did this, I have no idea.

    • @fotomaton7852

      C70 has a lot more going on than you may think. At its heart is the C300 III DGO sensor that has superb DR /HDR and a very cinematic IQ. R5/R5C have 8K resolution but the DR isn't really up there. Things like Micro HDMI and single bottom mount screw also disqualifies it for serious Netflix types of productions. That's not even the target market for such hybrid cameras.

    • @ProAVTV

      Netflix require timecode support amongst other things that the R5 wouldn't have met. The R5c might well get netflix approved, we will see!

      @@fotomaton7852 but the human eye can't even see the amount of colors within 16bit color. Besides, Dolby vision is only 12 bit anyway, so the final result wouldn't be capable of seeing the entire spectrum in the final result anyway. Even the colorist, as far I'm aware, would be incapable of noticing the 16 bit color as there aren't any displays in existence with that much dynamic range as far as I'm aware.

      I do believe the R5C is amazing!! I preordered mine on release date. In terms of many important features it is still behind the C70 in my opinion. The main one and is why many often choose an Alexa over all others is dynamic range. The C70 beats the R5C by 2 complete stops. The DGO sensor gives the C70 gives cleaner images especially in shadows and much more forgiving in exposure. The C70 has Clog2 which is the professional standard for canon C cameras. Built in ND’s are so nice to have and impossible to live without once your used to them and they leave the front of the lens open for other filters. But that’s just my thinking lol everybody has different needs👍

      @@EpicGamerWinXD69 What 16-bit? C70 does 10-bit recording at the moment and will get to 12-bit with the CRL update. My main point was about the 2 to 3 extra stops of DR the DGO sensor inside C70 gives you as well as the super clean shadow information. Totally changes how you expose and much closer to ARRI/RED standard than your average mirrorless hybrid. That's where the C70 shines vs R5/R5C. YMMV.

    Why did you leave out the elephants in the room? Please show us 1) the functional difference in the video AF between the R5C, the R5 and the C70. 2) The speed and time required when switching between photo and video mode, 3) the portable power choices and brands 4) how to use a portable monitor with the attached tascam audio unit.

      Ok so:
      1. I don’t consider the AF difference to be one of the main differences. It’s something we will absolutely explore in more detail. But it didn’t make my top 10 list
      2. I mention this in my main video overview, in fact I say for some people the R5, A1 and S1H will be better for them because of just this.
      3. I also discuss this in our main video. I like the CoreSwX power base edge or the Anton Bauer Titon Base.
      4. That will need a cage to attach both at once. I’m sure we will see cage options hit the market very soon

      Pro Av are in the business of selling kit, they are not an independent review channel. If Carl harps on about perceived deficiencies too much the manufacturers are less likely to bring ProAv in at an early stage.
