Probably a previous commenter has mentioned this, but just in case not: Even more of this myth is represented in the sky: Cepheus (the rather do-nothing King of Ethiopia and husband of Cassiopeia), Cetus (literally "the whale," but taken for the sea monster) and even the Head of Medusa (held in Perseus' hand and represented by the variable star Algol) are also participants in the myth who were honored with constellations or stars. Oddly, in the entire sky, there is no other myth that has so many constellations devoted to it. Great video, and thanks for bringing up the constellations that you did! I'm a devoted stargazer and I love it when folks go to the trouble to pass on information about the heavens.

You feel a tremendous sadness for Medusa and her sisters. Banished from their home, at no fault of their own. Than to be hunted, when they just wanted to be left alone. The Greek gods, more often than not, were portrayed as cold, selfish deities, that didn’t care about humanity

"Poseidon, he of the dark hair, lay with one of these [Medousa (Medusa), one of the Gorgones], in a soft meadow and among spring flowers."
Apollodorus described Medusa as a gorgon who claimed to be more beautiful than Athena

4:55 Athena Sounds like a Victim blamer. I genuinely wonder sometimes, Greeks wrote these stories about their Own God's!
I mean, what exactly was their game plan here? Did they wanted to worship these twisted God's??
I wanted to change my opinion, Athena was a monster, a demon.

In our culture/religion there was the element of as we call it:
      Ανθρωπομορφισμός / anthropomorphism
      Human-formed kinda thing…
The Gods of our mythology many times have human characteristics. They were jealous, they envied, they hated and cheated, they could do wrong things!
Still, I prefer our mythology than other weird stuff around the ancient world!
In Egypt, when Isis founded the corpse of Osiris she made the first mummy. But Osiris was dead. Then, she fashioned for the mummy and she made it with the dead corpse of Osiris and she gave birth to Horus…
In India, several Gods have 12 hands and 4 heads and there are stories of them being born by the vomit and the piss of a bigger Godly Entity…
Yeah… Hellas was a looot lighter in weirdness compared to these myths!

@@Kolious_Thrace I've never heard of any Hindu God born that way?? Much less being Born, Devta might be born but God are only 4, they were not born and it's also strange that you think that it's Better to pray to a rapist than a God who is represented with multiple Hands.
Hindu Gods don't have multiple Hands, it's a human representation of them, to show their attributes.
A Hindu equivalent of Zeus, Indra once tricked a Human woman and basically raped her, the Hindu creator God, Brahma chopped his balls of and made him roam the earth for thousands of years with puss comming out of his Body, while worthy Human king of given the duty of the King of Heaven. Hindu gods punished the rapist and not the victim.
That might sound Strange and wierd to you, I can understand.

Depends on what 'worship' you talking about.
If you define worship like 'Christian influence whorship' like you worship Jesus then it's f up, because Jesus is 'Paragon of Virtue'; God that you suppose to follow or to set example from
But the Greeks worshipped them based on what they are or what they represent in real life; want to be beautiful pray to Afrodite, go to war - Ares, be strategic - Athena, sailing - Poseidon, etc... they are gods not to follow based on their behaviour but worship based on what they can do or what they Might.
Just think one of them as your boss, you whorship him if he gives you a bonus, but you not gonna follow him if cheats on his wife right?

Funny thing is, Athena turning Medusa into a monster isn't a Greek myth. It wasn't made by Greeks, it was made by a Roman as an allegory for the goverment of Rome in his time. I have no clue why it's always mentioned when telling the story of Perseus and quite francly I find it annoying since it missrepresents ancient Greeks.

      @@alcaeus701 it is true!
The myth about Medusa and Poseidon and the punishment of Athena is a *Roman version* of the myth!
Beside the religion, the architecture… and everything else, Romans adopted many of our myths but they changed them!
In Hellenic mythology Athena didn’t punished Medusa!
      Ovid wrote that myth!

Medusa is symbolism for the temple guardians in Ancient Greece. They were Scythian women who were known to be the best archers. They could hit you while riding backwards on the back of a horse and even cut of one of their breasts so they could shoot better. They kept snake venom in their hair (symbolism for Medusa’s snake hair) that they would rub on their arrows. Best believe these arrows would “turn you to stone” symbolizing what happens when you get hit with these arrows covered in snake venom.

I don't know if it's documented anywhere, but through art history, Perseus beheaded the good one first,. highest, but walked around with the lowest or lower 's head, turning people into stone.
The first one in the cave wasn't Medusa, it was highest one.
