I really love your channel! Please don’t stop making videos! I would REALLY LOVE if you made one about the current Russia / Ukraine War! Just an idea, maybe recap the collapse of the Soviet Union and how that evolved into the situation going on now in Ukraine. I love your videos ❤
The story of Hades and Persephone is one of my absolute favorites in Greek mythology, mostly because of the resulting implications of the reason for the change of seasons. As well, in regard to myths involving Hades, the tale of Orpheus & Eurydice is beautiful in the idea that Hades is not completely cold and hard-hearted; that Hades actually does carry, even if limited, an amount of compassion.
I guess we've got to loose everything we have, in order for us to begin to appreciate the value of ourselves, and thus start to learn how to behave and act in a manner which both serves our soul- nature, as well as our spirit-nature. The Harmonious Union of Soul and Spirit, being the real purpose of Hades existence in the Universe, is for us like Heaven upon our eventual death, but what is the evidence for this successful union whilst we still live... May we who care find out!
It seems Hades made sure the punishment fairly matched the crime, and again he had compassion for the mortals I think it just depended on all the details and feeling behind it etc !
In my college Mythology 200 class we were taught that Hades is extremely misunderstood in todays age because we inherently “Christianize” him and Greek mythology in general. No hades is not like the devil where he is constantly punishing souls and reeking havoc, he is just the overseer of where the souls reside. ALL souls go to the underworld no one goes to Olympus, it is not heaven or a sort of counterpart. Olympus is strictly for the gods. Hades was a mostly fair and just god as well. And he is also the god of wealth, riches, coining, and minerals which really makes him a well rounded god. That’s why he is one of my favorites
The Disney movie of Hercules also contributed to that misunderstanding. In the movie, Hades has flames serving as hair..? But in a villain Disney fashion, Hades wants to take over Olympus. Something quite ironic too, Zeus is pictured as a "caring father".
There is even a story where Heracles goes to the Underworld and requests that Hades restores the soul of his friend's wife, and Hades just gives her soul to him, no price, or strings attached, because he was so moved by the love between them. Doesn't really sound like a bad guy if you ask me.
The 3 wise kings actually judge souls according to their deeds. Hades is the king of Tartaros, it's his dominion, but he doesn't bother with judging every single soul himself. He has to authorize the 3 wise kings' decision only when a soul is slated to go to Elysium. If the soul is slated for Asphodelos, only the vote of the 3 kings is needed. Finally, when it comes to Tartaros itself, the place where the damned were punished, Hades took it upon himself to design their punishment according to their sins.
Hades was a true working man. He took his duty very, very seriously. He didn’t ask for compliments, but I’m sure he appreciated them. He probably kidnapped Persephone because she was someone that he could relate to, and who he could have a meaningful conversation with. Being the god of the underworld, I’m sure it was hard to have a meaningful conversation with anyone, especially when you’re too busy to have time to venture to the surface. He kidnapped her out of loneliness and desperation, unlike his brothers, who routinely kidnapped and raped women, in a attempt to demonstrate their power in a very immature way. Hades was the brother that truly grew up and got a job, instead of partying 24/7. Some of the souls that entered the underworld enjoyed more benefits than even he did. That’s how hard he worked, and how much he cared about this job.
This Chanel is pure gold… learned so much about history, for someone who never had an interest in it, relistened most of the videos multiple times.. can’t imagine how much time and research went into each… THANK YOU FOR BEING AMAZING!!!
As a child who grew up obsessed with Greek mythology, your channel is absolutely everything 7yr old me needed....also, the advertising 😅 love it such a smooth way to bring up Nord
Very good! Love your voice! Orpheus didn’t get exited, but got insecure and in doubt ‘cause he couldn’t hear her behind him. He didn’t hear her footsteps, rustling of her dress or didn’t hear her breathe. So he started to be confused and in doubt if she was really behind him. Finally he couldn’t bear it anymore and looked behind him and she looked at him in sorrow and despair and vanished backwards. This is a story about losing your trust, hopes, faith, impatient. He was the only mortal who was given a second change, Hades never had done that before. And that was the only rule to obey, do NOT look behind you until you’re back in the outside world. And nearly to the end he lost faith, trust, patient. The mind playing evil tricks and can make you paranoid. Along the way he started too fool himself:”where was she? was she really behind him as told? But why couldn’t he hear her, feel her presence? What if she wasn’t there? love this story very much. If you think about; it’s almost an impossible task to do. Finally you get back the one you love so much, you’re so desperate longing for. But at your way out, you’re being asked not to look back. Whatever happen don’t look back in the past but stay focused on the future. And you have to walk that long route in a dark silent tunnel and you don’t hear your beloved one behind you. What will you think? How long can you resist? If I put a sign in my garden with “don’t walk on the grass”, what will happen? 85% will walk over my grass. And the sad thing is; he started to see the light, the end of the tunnel. It was a matter of meters. That’s also human. The rising pressure and the relieve to see the end and losing it. How often people play suïcide when everyone think the person was coming out of a depression. That he or she was doing better. It’s that final last heavy burden to carry, a out of control statement. The last piece of a task is the most challenging one. The Christian’s stole this story (as many Myths they stole). When Mozes went into the mountains to get the 10 rules. And his people started to be impatient, resistent, losing hope and faith. They made a golden calf and started to obey it as their God.
Thank you for a magnificent presentation. Your choice of art work to accompany your commentaries is stunning . Your map of the Greek underworld is one of the best I have seen so far. Congratulations!
Great 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Hades despite what we have seen in films wasn’t a bad evil God! He was well respected in ancient Hellas but sometimes his name was avoided as you said, trying to avoid to caught his attention! He had a pitchfork although in some other stories he had a helmet that made him invisible but that isn’t much right because his name Άδης/ádis > Hades means the one that cannot he seen. He was invisible anyway! A small detail 3:25 *Romans calling him Pluto* Actually, Pluto was another Hellenic name for Hades! It’s not a Roman/Latin term! Even though Romans renamed the Hellenic pantheon when they adopted our Gods, they kept some names like Apollo and Pluto. In Hellenic Hades was called either: Άδης / Ádis > Hades Πλούτωνας / Plùtonas > Pluto Πλούτος / plùtos means wealth in Hellenic! Meaning that they knew about the precious metals and gems beneath the Earth. 5:08 The famous avenue Champs Élysées in Paris was named after the “paradise” of ancient Hellenic religion! The fields of Elysium 11:40 As most of the Roman myths and stories, they were based in Hellenic mythology or Historical facts! The story of Vergilius about Dido and Aeneas was inspired by the fact that Dido was the daughter of the King Myttos and she was inherited the throne. She went to Northern Africa with her brother Pygmalion and they founded the city called Καρχηδόνα / Karxidòna > Carthage Vergilius used this fact and the stories of Homer and he wrote that Aeneas after living Troy he went to Carthage. Dido fell in love with him but Zeus ordered Aeneas to leave and found a city (later called Rome) and Aeneas abandoned her. Aeneid, the most important epic poem of the Roman culture was inspired and influenced by the works of Homer and the Hellenic mythology. Romans claimed ancestry from the Hellene hero Aeneas and the foundation of Rome was a God’s will… 16:12 Orpheus and Eurydice In Hellenic their names are Ορφέας / orfèas Ευρυδίκη/ Evridíki Orpheus and Eurydice were from Thrace🇬🇷 Orpheus was the son of the Muse Kalliòpi> Calliope. He was the first musician in Hellenic mythology. Even Apollo the God of music liked his playing that he gave him his Lyra!
I honestly believe that there should be a part two and perhaps a part three as well, since there is so much to discuss and debate of how to analyze the Greco-Roman underworld with the connections and affiliations with other mythologies, including religions, specifically Christianity.
I just watched the video on hercules and thought wow i never actually understood this guys story until you told it and thought man, i wonder if he's done one on hades yet and i look back at the channel to see 4 horus ago, a video released about hades and my mind got blown. keep doing videos like these please!!
What amazes me as a Christian is that the churches teach this and say that it is from the Bible, when it is, in fact, taken from Greek mythology. The only change they did is that they labelled it as Heaven and Hell. Thanks for the valuable information.

i really like this content...... its a lot different from the percy jackson books i used to read as they did not provide all the information of the ACTUAL greek mythology
Of all the time I've put into Greek mythology I can honestly say. To this day I can not find ANY REFERANCE of (2 coins under the tongue) for the passage by Charon. 2 coins and 2 eyes. That one sure is widely known though;-) keep up with excellent videos!
I've actually heard the "under the tongue" bit a very limited number of times before, but yes, rarely and typically under some of the most radical conditions (possibly not even within Greek mythos); most accounts however being, as mentioned, "two coins: one on each eye."
Having stated things in my second comment I invite the author of this clip to consider carefully the Thracian origin of this Myth...also connected to Orpheus who taught the Cult of the Kabeiroi in Samothrace and who sang before King Hades and Persephone...the latter took pity on Orpheus and asked her husband to free Eurydice s Soul. Moreover the concept of the Soul separate from the body, like a bird in a cage is crucial to Thracian(!!) Orphism. See Erwin Röhde s Psyche(book).
It's remarkable that even though he has his wife with him for only part of the year, he is only recorded as having one other beloved, Minthe. On the other hand Zeus and Poseidon would chase anything pretty in a skirt (which did not mean that men were ruled out).

I overall liked the video a lot. You missed a few things with the hades persephone myth.
-Mainly Hades ask Zeus to marry his daughter and he agrees, before the kidnapping.
-Zeus didn't ask Hades to return Persephone. Off the top of my head Hermes goes to the underworld to tell hades, demator is causing a famine.
-Zeus also doesn't make the argument to return to Persephone. It's Hades who tells persephone to return to earth.
-The reason persephone returns 4 months out of the year is because hades gives a food of the underworld (seeds)
-And Demator begins the seasonal cycle with Spring. She creates spring after persephone returns from the the underworld the first time.
But everything else was bang on mostly. The Hades Persephone myth is easily one of the myths that has the most incorrect information on.

Great video thanks for posting
LMFOA!! you got me with the AD
i really like this content......
its a lot different from the percy jackson books i used to read as they did not provide all the information of the ACTUAL greek mythology
These are really stellar!
So interesting to learn about this after watching The Sandman. Thank you ;)
That Nord VPN is witty and smooth
Damn
Just came here to say hello to a fellow UA-camr who makes mythology-based videos. Great content!
See Erwin Röhde s Psyche(book).
a beautiful symbolism for the manny aspects of life we experience
Woah. I was a junkie for a long time and never knew that about morphine and Morpheus. Thanks for the new anecdote for NA/AA

Hey remember me, the guy from the last comment. You got me again, i hope those ad sponsors are paying you well
I give you credit for the smooth seg to the sponsor. I don't mind it so much if you're clever.
When will the new video be uploaded??❤❤

Soon, but the video is 3 hours, so it’s taken a while to make 👍
@@TheLifeGuide Love your content and story telling a lot, when is the FACE REVEAL‼
I was taking cough syrup while listening I litterally had to check the bottle cos I thought I took too much when I heard online security
It's remarkable that even though he has his wife with him for only part of the year, he is only recorded as having one other beloved, Minthe. On the other hand Zeus and Poseidon would chase anything pretty in a skirt (which did not mean that men were ruled out).
Most evil punishment 😂 ignore online security. Hades haunts me now🙈🤣
The sponsor part was great.😂
