This was an excellent comparison. You are dead on accurate. I know because I have both. Thanks for the shout out.
I haven’t yet experienced the ash drawer jamming on the Pro, but so far I’ve only used briquettes once in the Pro. All the other times I used lump.
Thanks Lew! Im looking forward to your videos on the Pro and the Kickoff.
I just got a kickoff grill. I haven't used it yet. It has been raining every evening. Nice comparison video.
Thank you! Another excellent video that showed me and told me exactly what I needed to know. Now I am really hungry and I need to buy charcoal.
What a great through comparison!!! Great info and demo, spot on, AS USUAL!! awesome job Luis!!!💯🎊🎉
This convinced me to get the kickoff grill. Thank you for the honest review.
Thanks for watching and I do hope you enjoy your grill.
Great contents as always, Luis. Keep it up!!! Un abrazo desde Brasil!!!
I have 2 orig LSG, one with the updated handles, one with the smaller bail pegs. I like them very much, and take one camping. I received my Kickoff grill just yesterday and plan to try it tomorrow. If it indeed is more economical fuelwise then the LSG is, it will become my camping grill from now on, and the LSG will stay home. I’m thinking easier to transport for fewer parts and theft risk as the old school LSG have just become “collectable”. Good video…(you’ve got it bad for cast iron! LOL)
Many years ago, I bought my original Lodge Sportsman grill from Amazon for $89.99.. I still haven't worn it out, so no need for a new grill, but I like the upgrades on the new one.
Great review, thx for sharing. What about the charcoal tray? The Kickoff Grill is just a plate. It seems a hazard to me when dumping the charcoal because there is very little to stop red hot coal from rolling off into a cook table or grill. That one picture alone is what gives me pause. And the fact that it can only hold a small amount of charcoal. Any thoughts on that? I've seen a couple of reviews on this, and nobody seems to mention that. And for me it's the main feature that I noticed immediately.
Thanks for your excellent reviews! I finally decided to buy the Sportsman’s Pro, mainly because it’s a bit larger, but the Kickoff has a lot going for it, too.
I’d also like to know more about the table you were using in this video.
The kick off grill is very underrated in my opinion and for the price it definitely should have a place in your home. For those that like cooking/grilling outdoors this is a great grill. The table/grill is custom made by my brother. Also thanks for the comment and for sharing your thoughts.
That’s an interesting looking table you have the grills set up on.
I need to know what it is lol
Per usual, excellent content!
What is the table the grills are on?
Very good and useful video, thanks!
Please tell us where you got your grill table...and can you use the lodge sets on a regular wood table or do they have to be on top of another grill
Hi thanks for watching. So first question, my brother made this open fire grill for Dutch oven cooking, cast iron skillet cooking and as a cooking table as well. He made it from an old water heater tank.
Second question, you can use a wooden table as long as it is thick and sturdy enough for the cast iron grills. Be aware that it can scorch the wooden table or leave burn marks from the heat. I would recommend a Dutch oven table for these grills or a collapsible aluminum table would work great too. Hope this helps and thanks
Still waiting on mine, soon tho!
Thanks!
Great video. Thank you.
Please show us how to clean and season the grill grate of the sportman grill.
Do you oil the grate and let it super hot before grilling?
Your grills look very seasoned and nice.
Thank you.
Okay will do.
I'm just having a hard time getting my head around the kickoff grill. The ability of the coals to fall off and lack of ability to stack charcoal just confuses me. As to the sportsman pro, what was the need for it ? There was nothing wrong with the original.
Less parts and I’m sure it’s easier/cheaper to manufacture
@@luisj.castironcooking could be but that doesnt change the fact that it is not safe nor actually useable. Rather have a weber.
I use a 12" foil pizza tray for the coals. Makes clean up much easier also.
Yeah, it’s a horrible design. I can see that just from watching this video.
I will be getting the new Camp chef cast iron grill in summer...
I also own the camp chef grill and it’s great. I think it works slightly better than the new Sportsman Pro Grill
I don't know why his used charcoal so quickly, Mine lasted quite a long time
Where did you have the vents set on each grill? And did you use the same amount of char cole in both.
Both have the same amount of charcoal, and both are opened about the same on their vents.
What exactly has Lodge said which I am restating?
Excellent video, many thanks. Sub'd.
Have you seen or heard any reviews on the IronMaster CI-2020
I have not but I will definitely check it out
How often do you seasoning it
I usually oil the entire grill every time I use it. But the most important is the grill grate. I would definitely oil it every time
I need a kick off mini for camping. This one is to big.
Neither work in my world because the cooking surface is completely exposed to wind, cold, and rain. The outside burns and the inside is undercooked. My Sportsman grill lasted one long weekend on a camping trip and was sold on Kiji. The Weber portable charcoal BBQs have lids. With vents. You stop the weather and adjust the heat. Also weigh less. These grills are nowhere near as practical as a Go-Anywhere barbie.

Sorry, but your only saying what Lodge has said....
Everdure makes models much better designed than either of these.
If you’re working in food-service, sure. But why do you need to wear rubber gloves to do a cooking show on UA-cam? If you were going for “professional,” you missed the mark and landed on “insane.”
Zzzzzzz.
