@@GrillinandChillinwithColeman I was surprised and shouldn’t have because cast iron holds heat. I did four leg quarters, and I used a whole chimney, but I added another half chimney and didn’t need to. I end up wasting the half, so lesson learned on my part, lol!

Looks delicious. One of my best recipes was handed down by my grandfather from Ohio who was part of a traveling band of clowns which toured the country in the 1930s and 40s. Not only did he fully participate as a performer (juggling and spraying seltzer mostly) but he was also in charge of the Clown Chuckwagon, and over the years, came up with a nice selection of mostly campfire stews (or "or stewge" as Gramps used to call them),, soups and casseroles. One of my favorites, casseroles, which I still prepare frequently, consists of baked beans and wieners (for the KETO portion of the meal), macaroni and cheese. and a couple handfuls of those big orange circus peanuts - a sweet yet savory bake-up that's a hit with everyone who tries it. Gramps had one clown name for performing with his fellow troupers at carnivals, civic events, etc., throughout the central Midwest ""Antsy Pants" - but around the campfire at breakfast or suppertime, when most of these talented vagabond buffoons had removed their make-up and hung their giant shoes in their campers, (but oddly enough not all of them) Gramps was affectionately known among the boys as "Yummo." He told me how it wasn't unusual for farmers to donate a hen or two and maybe a couple of dozen eggs, in return for a brief barnyard slapstick performance by a couple of the boys for the farmer, his family and his hired hands.. He also told me as soon as he got back to camp with the chickens, the alcoholic Geek who traveled with them would inevitably beg permission to bite the heads of the pullets when Gramps was ready to get those birds cooking. Seemed that this particular Geek actually not only savored the taste of the live chickens he was required to eat (which were usually provided by the promoter of the event at which the troupe was performing) - but craved more when "off=the-clock" Talk about a Carnivore diet!! Wow!!! Reportedly, he was known to comment that "live chicken pairs well with a pint of Carstairs White Seal Blended." By the way, Grandma also traveled with Gramps. She was the seamstress - making a good number of the clown suits from her own design and repairing all them when required. So of course Gram and Gran rolled along from town- to -town with a big foot pump operated sewing machine in their trailer, - in addition to all the pots, pants, cutlery, stirrers, etc. My Dad was born in a campground in Posey County, Indiana, delivered by a local midwife and plopped into a casserole baking dish as soon as Gramps cut the umbilical cord with his second best onion chopping knife. As for me, I married young and did well for myself in doing so. My wife is the daughter of an outdoor parking lot magnate in a major city in Ohio. I was dowried with three downtown lots. I've had a comfortable life pretty much doing whatever I want all day while other people collect money on my behalf while sitting down in booths, watching TV, reading (or even snoozing between customers arriving and honking the horns to wake 'em up). Consequently, for awhile, I was able to open a couple of storefront business which specialized in selling "clown suits for the whole family," including custom made if somebody wanted them - and even clown suits for the family pets. The seamstresses I hired used Gram's patterns, of course. . The stores were called "Hem and Ha!" - and with every sale, I usually threw in a copy of one of Gramps' recipes for a clown casseroles, "silly stew," "buffoon bread, "Punchinello Porridge,," or what have you. Of course, they all pair well with seltzer water.

I typically LOVE LODGE products. I was real excited, when this was released. I finally got a hands on look, at one of their outlet stores in Tennessee. I just wasn't impressed because it lacks a way to add more charcoal, without removing the grill's top! I feel like someone had a good idea, but rushed it to completion and into production. It needs a "Generation 2" with some sort of coal shoot on the side, or top?
But, it appears (when flipped over) the bottom base can do double duty as a griddle or griddle grill top!
It just makes me wonder... why?

I really enjoy the Kick-Off Grill. Two of the things I like most about it is it’s sheer simplicity, and it’s tendency not to spark or flare up nearly as badly as other cast iron hibachi’s, including the old Sportsman’s and the new Sportsman’s Pro grill. Another thing is I think the kick-off is quite a bit more portable than either Sportsman’s grill and all other cast iron hibachi’s that I am familiar with.
    Great introductory review, Mike.

I got one about 6 months ago. I lucked out and got it for $50 because it was an opened package return. I would have paid full price, anyways, since I play WoW and thought it looked like something a Dwarf would have in their kitchen. I christened it with a nice 1.5lb tuna steak which came out beautifully. It probably isn't for everyone since it can be a little cumbersome to add coals for longer cooking(especially if you're smoking and have a large piece of meat covered with your 12" Dutch Oven). Still, like all Lodge products, it does what it does and does it well.

When I saw you dumping charcoal on at 3:12 I immediately knew this is a disaster waiting to happen. I like lodge in general and have many pieces from them that I use with scouting but it is very clear that the risk management team at Lodge took the day off with this one. I can't imagine how many brush fires or house fires are going to be attributed to somebody dumping charcoal in one of these and having burning briquettes fall off onto the ground or wooden patio. The lack of common sense on this one scares me. Y'all use this at your own discretion, but please not at a campsite near me!

    Mr. Cast Iron,
I got one of these last year. I have been wanting to use it but time and well... things get in the way.
At the time, I contacted Lodge direct over the phone and they said they didn't have the sportsman's grill but told me that the sportsman pro was going to be released in 2022 and suggested that I try the Kickoff grill and so I did. life got in the way, a heart attack and a fender bender.... call me lucky....and it's been sitting.
For those who don't know, the new Lodge sportsman grill has pretty much the same dimensions as the old sportsman grill it replaces..., just a little shorter.
    back to the Kickoff grill...
You can put a 12" skillet on it.
Two Kickoff grills and two 12 inch skillets
that's more cooking surface than the sportsman by itself.
Both the Kickoff and the new sportsman pro give me ideas for a cool outdoor grill center.
would love to see Lodge come out with a single, double and triple burner propane stove.

      it's all good.
I'm new to your channel and this is the first video I have seen.
I have a healthy assortment of cast iron vintage Wagner-Ware and and new Lodge.
I have a soft spot for old Glenwood, Queen-Atlantic for the old school stoves.
can't afford one but... one can dream and only imagine the shipping costs, today.
So... MacGyvering and sifting through historical cookware and stoves along with modern day commercial kitchen cookware.
I am a stickler for high quality durable products and the choice of materials used.
I am familiar with the high end premium brands of cast iron and enameled skillets, Dutch ovens, and their cladded stainless steel counterparts.
      That said....
I was asked just a few days ago what I would recommend.
Vintage cast iron aside, and strictly modern day production.
      For Cast Iron:
Lodge is the brand to go with.
Pros: experience, wide variety of products, Made in USA, Prices are very VERY reasonable. Very well built. Mil-Spec ready.
Cons: Really cannot think of any
If I were to recommend to young people and newcomers to cast iron, what Lodge model cookware to start with, I would recommend starting with the 10.5" griddle, then the combo cooker, then the Dutch oven cited below.
add to those three items, the Kickoff grill and a Weber Smokey Joe and 22" kettle, and Sportsman pro and you've got a powerhouse of cookware.
I think a 6 inch Lodge 3SK skillet would be a good start for the standard skillet followed by an 8 and 10 inch skillet.
Volrath tri-clad stainless 8, 10 and 12 inch saute pans for the win.
      69208
      69210
      69212
but again.... below are what I would consider a VERY versatile yet essential first three cast iron pieces.
I should point out now that the camp dutch oven has a lid that will actually fit the 10.5 inch griddle.

@@MrCastIron Lighter for one, less prone to rusting, and the grate can be replaced if it does rust.
Secondly, you can throw on a cast iron pan and effectively get the same great use of cash iron, but without the fuss of what is to me, a very limited use case piece of iron. Cash iron's qualities are how many ways you can use it. This however, is just a heavy grill.
      A few benefits might be:
      A) Easier to replace coals even if there is food on the grill
      B) Heat retention.
If I was to buy one of their cast iron equipment pieces, for lack of a better term, it would be the Cook-It-All. That piece actually is amazing in its design and function.
The newer version of the Sportsman's Pro also lost access for adding new charcoal, making it just a complex Kickoff grill.

I've not had the same grip everyone has, if you have to add more charcoal then either you don't know what your doing or your expectations of this grill exceeds what it is intended for. The grill is great for a meal maybe for two but youre not cooking for a party. If you're cooking more than what can fit on the grill, in one cook get a bigger grill. Taking the grill off isn't hard either have a part of heavy gloves, like the same ones you'd use handling any hot cast iron.

  • @vinquinn
    @vinquinn 7 місяців тому +3

It's just too cumbersome, You can't adjust your fire. If you want to add charcoal, you have to pick up the whole thing which is red hot. You can't put it on a table or anything flammable. If you put on more coals, the existing ones spill off and go on the floor. You can see that in the video. A three piece unit would have been much better so you could lift off the grate.

So they mean a different grill they could have given a different name and kept the sportsman's grill going. The real thing of it is the large sportsman's grill and the new grill are nothing more than hibachis charcoal under a grate that's it same thing with the kickoff grill that's just a pot upside down with holes cut in it and charcoal beneath it and they make it seem like it's it's better than a Weber. You can't compare a sportsman's grill or a kickoff grill to a smokey Joe jumbo if you really want portability the Smokey Joe jumbo is the way to go and you can do a whole lot more with it
