I'll try thr aluminum liner and drill the holes but I found the lodge lid lifter is good to open the two doors and to manipulate the grate. The 4 in 1 works too.
Thanks Eric, for watching and commenting. I already had the spring handles, so I thought I would make the tool. I have watched videos, where they grind the slots in the cooking rack to accept the lid lifter, but I thought this was a bit aggressive. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
I really like the hook tool. Great tips and mods. I don't think I ever saw someone using skillets or Dutch Ovens on the sportsman grill, I'm sure it's a common thing, but never seen it before. Nicely Done. Thanks for sharing. 😎.
Hi Henry, I made the handle from a Tent Peg Puller and a handle you can see what I used on the video at 1:40 bottom left of video. Thanks for watching. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Thinking about using a high heat spray paint on the shell of my sportsman grill. Of course not the grill grate itself. Any thoughts?? Is this considered a moral sin??
Nice little grill and some great mods to it. You could go even simpler on your handle but it would not be as pretty. What country is it made in? Thank you for the awesome review, Steve. Because of where I live, you seldom see a flat iron steak. Stay safe and stay cool
Thanks Sean, yes the handle could be more simple, but I had the “Spring Handles” in my shop, so thought they would match the grill handle. It’s a German company, and they are made in Germany! We do not normally get Flat Iron Steaks, would not rush to buy them again, would go with a Bavette Steak. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Interesting knock off cooker. I do wonder about the quality of the cast iron sometimes from overseas. A lesser quality of cast iron then what Lodge uses can be brittle. But overall that looks good. As to placing foil in the bottom I could see some benefits but I have never thought it was worth it. I am always cleaning and re-seasoning to avoid rust. Always remember to add some vegetable oil after each cook and it will last 100 years. Last thing the hooks were a fun mod. However I suggest everyone keep a dedicated offset of pliers in their bbq tools kit. And of course tongs can work also but the pliers work better. Everyone have a great day 🌤.
Thanks Victor! These units are manufactured in Germany 🇩🇪, and not a cheap Chinese import. The foil is a quick clean up option. Now let’s talk about the hooks! I was offered one of the new Lodge Sportsman Pro’s for the launch day (1st February) but due to living in the UK 🇬🇧 the transport cost would of been extortionate! But, Lodge must of watched this video and “ “borrowed” some of my ideas, like Hooks for lifting the grate, and Hooks for sliding the Air Vent open and closed (I would like to think anyway!) Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Hi Del, I have had a look around the web and it looks at the moment there is no stock available. I did have to pay postage on these and it was quite heart at £29.00. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧

Hi Rob, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on my video. I agree with you 💯! BUT I wanted a Lodge Sportsman Grill, but they are not available in the UK and the shipping costs from the States where astronomical! Just another point, the BBQ-Toro range of Cast Iron is a German company, and their website states that all products are manufactured in Germany. I think they must be making them under License from Lodge. Stay Stay 👍🇬🇧
I would buy American, BUT, I am in the UK and the shipping costs would be double the cost of the grill! Was offered by Lodge, Sportsman Pro to review, but they said the freight charge was too expensive. So I have to get what I can. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Poorly designed for outdoors cooking, the food surface is exposed to wind and rain. No lid, no windbreak. Uses a lot of charcoal and scorches food on bottom while I cooked on top and in middle. Sold mine after one campout, fail. Get a small Weber Kettle . Cooks way better, more versatile, less briquettes.
I think you have listed all the faults with this type of Grill, With some more modifications (windbreak etc) and fire management you can cook a decent meal on them. One thing in their favour, is the robust construction! Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Have a lodge sportsman grill, almost identical. Trick is to not over load with charcoal. Around 30 is the magic number, holds heat great. Highly recommend .

Ooooooo Buddy, awesome review.
Like the mod with the hooks, yeah the foil in the bottom is a great thing. 🤘🤘
Thanks Lee! Learning with this little BBQ! Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧

To me it’s just a heat source, can use it for anything, next up is a Rôtisserie! Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Nice little grill
Another one to add to the Cast Iron collection.
Thanks for the review, Dutchy. Will look out for that. Looks handy for traveling.
Take care and stay safe,
Rob
Thanks Rob, they are really good for travelling! Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
That’s a cracking bit of kit!
Thanks Jamie, will be doing plenty of cooks on it 👍
I never tried the aluminum foil thing in my my Lodge, but that’s a pretty good idea!
I noticed it on other UA-cam videos! Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Great review Dutchy!!
Thanks Guys👍 Can see me cooking some good Breakfasts on this during the Winter. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Well I think I need/want one now!
We all need more BBQ equipment in our life’s!
Great review, Steve! Boy, they sure are very similar, aren't they?
They sure are, wonder if they are made under License?
@@DutchyOutdoorCookingBBQ I was wondering the same thing. Maybe the German company and Lodge have some agreement to make them over there.
brillant were can you buy this or the sportsman
There is a link to Amazon in the description, but they are out of stock at the moment 🙁
where can you get the pick handle and other tool to open and slide vent thanks henry

Hey Razor, not sure the purists would recommend high temp paint, but if you feel it would make care for your sportsman grill easier, why not!

The handles you've made are great. You should sell them. Take care.
The next Jeff Bezos! Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Could just use a fire poker or a lid lifter to keep you away from it, and it’d have kept you from modifying and creating huge rust spots.
I could of, but the hooks are so much better. I did season the two areas that where drilled so no rust spots should appear. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Are these still available in the UK?
Hi Del, I have had a look around the web and it looks at the moment there is no stock available. I did have to pay postage on these and it was quite heart at £29.00. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
is it pre seasoned?
Yes it come pre-seasoned. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧🇺🇦
I just use my tongs to open and close the vents and fire door.
Tongs are good, and I use them if I do not have my “handles” close
by. Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧

Nice one Steve, you'll have to build an extension to your monkey cave soon mate if you keep buying cast iron at this rate. 😁 😂 🤣 BJ.

@@DutchyOutdoorCookingBBQ Just found this grill on Amazon £90...not a bad price.. BJ

Strange, did you scroll down to BBQ-Torro then click link?i tried it and went straight to the Amazon page.
Looked like a good reproduction of the Lodge.
Hi Lew, they must be making them under license. Stay Safe 👍🇬🇧
Looked to be a great review. Then I realised it was a Chinese knock off. Buying Chinese knock offs doesn’t do the original manufacture and good.
