In all honesty , I am a huge Lodge fan anyway. So , it didn't take much to convince me how good their Sportsman's Pro Grill is . I have been looking at buying a hibachi style grill for some time. But , thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video , and point out some of the things that some people may not fully realize before they jump out there , and drop $150 on a grill . Personally , I don't have an issue , other than the fact that I now live alone , and don't often cook outdoors anymore . But, beyond that I would consider getting one of those just , if no other reason , to have in my cast iron collection .
Great follow up with the tips on this Sportsman's Pro Grill review Big Lew! I'm thinking that Lodge needs you as a product tester prior to launching new products! You really know your cast iron grills and how they work, and what improvements could be made prior to them releasing their new products!👍
Great video. I hope Lodge incorporates your suggestions and adds another two holes to the fire bowl-to-base attachment and modifies the moulds for the ash-tray to create some ‘grease grooves’ on the ends of the ash tray.
Man I like that grill. It's a little too small for my family of 5 but if one were camping that would come in handy. Thanks for the in depth walk through.
Well my family of four has been reduced to a family of two in the past year and a half. Therefore it is just perfect for my son and I. Thanks for watching Dash.
Yea, I should have set it down softly. It w really was only a couple of feet into the yard, the grass and soil were a little soft from a rain the night before. Still made a racket, that I heard better during editing than I did live. It survived and works fine no damage done. Speaking if which those Velcro straps are going to make it easy on the sliding ash drawer. That way I won’t have to ever give it an accidental drop test. Thanks for watching Matt.
That's a cool cast iron grill Lew! Cool hacks you recommend too. That would be cool if they offered it in a larger size with a stand too, almost like a PK Grill. 👍🏼
Video had my full attention. Great point on the fat/grease drippage concerns. I was leaning towards getting this but may just go with the Kick-Off instead since it is a lot different than the older Sportsman's grill that I already have. God Bless, and thank You for another great video!
I keep it on something different now days. i found a steel framed table with a tile top and junk store for five bucks. the surface is only about one and half feet square.
Thanks for the review. I've been trying to decide on a grill. I checked these out when I was at the Lodge Factory Store when we went to the Cornbread Festival. I also checked out the kickoff because we don't need anything big with just the 2 of us. Still waiting for prices to come down.
have you tried using the Magellan fold up table from Academy? I have 3 of them now you also might dedicate a half sheet pan to sit under it when you use it
Good video lew !I didn't want this new version of the sportsman grill but after watching this video I just might get one Ps still like the sportsman grill better. THANK you Frank from montana....
Awesome video. I picked one up over the weekend and can’t wait to use it. I was worried about the wobbly base but I’ll try to adjust my bolts. Thanks for the video.
Great follow up Lew and nice trick with the velcro straps. Is there some way to use and old dowel rod to make a handle to carry lunchbox style? Drill a couple of holes at the end of the rod or eye hooks, and add some rings or S hooks and attach them to handles? Or fashion some sort of bungie strap handle? Or, hit your local thrift store and find yourself an old gym duffel bag the grill will fit in. That's how I haul my DO stuff and carry my grilling utensils, all together.
I would just cover the last 3 inches on either side of the charcoal box with foil so if/when you adjust the air flow, the grease goes where it's supposed to. It shouldn't mess with the air flow enough to affect the grilling.
Another great thing about this grill is that it is small enough to fit into your oven. Just put it in there on a cleaning cycle and it will come as clean as new!
Looks like the carrying hooks could be used on both ends of the ash tray and you wouldn't have to go through all the trouble of the velcro straps, to keep it from sliding as you moved the grill.
I can’t find an old-school grill for my wife. Apparently she lent hers out a few years ago. I’m not satisfied with the new one. However, your take on the grill just made me not want to buy one and I thank you for that.
Well this video is a couple years old. My opinion of it has changed quite a bit. I really do like it and I haven’t use my old one in a couple of years.
modern companies are really fucked up. i'm certain what happened here was that lodge management decided the old design needed to be upgraded so they handed the project off to a new wondershit designer/engineer who is a vegetarian/vegan who never goes camping, so they ended up with a portable grill that is not really portable, that can't handle cooking meat or anything greasy or oily. and the wondershit designer/engineer convinced the others around them that this was the ultimate, perfect design to replace the old model.
I love chicken livers! I was improving the bacon. You not only heard it, you saw them in the opening sequence. I didn’t invite you over to share any, so what’s your issue?
@@BigLewBBQ Thanks for the reply. I don't like liver in any form, but YOU keep BBQing and other things YOU want to do, and I'll keep watching. LOL. Have a great day.
My dude You’re over-thinking it. Just put the handles into the lower level handle holes and lift. Even works when the cover is on. No need for Velcro or other such.
Lodge should not call this grill a Sportsman's grill. They changed it to much. They should call it the New Pro grill. And they should sell both the Old one and the new one. Let us make the choice what we want. We are the ones buying it.
@@BigLewBBQ Hi Lew, I just went out on the web tonight and bought a IRONMaster cast iron grill. Its the size of the Sportsman's grill with a rectangular top, and the lower part like the Sportsman's grill. I got the larger one, same size as the old Sportsman's grill, it cost me $184.00 plus free shipping, I got what lodge should of made. It's Chinese iron, but I have to live with that. It comes from here in the states. If you ask me I think Lodge owes me a old Sportsman's grill. I have talked up Lodge for OVER 25 years! They have made 2 new grills that are not all that great and taken away a great grill. A part of history. I don't like to be use so they can make more money. One last tip you might want to use. To keep cast iron from rusting over winter, rub bee's wax over a warm pan or grill. It burns off the next time you use it.... just a tip to pass... Thanks for all you do. You put alot of time in what you do.....
@@waynethebarber1095 Well thank you. I have the Cajun Classic cast iron hibachi grill. It too is Chinese iron yet I really like it. Nice work, it’s a neat grill, but I think I’ll wait until they change that ash tray/intake or just get the old one lol.

what if you place a aluminum foil on it.will it help with the grease?

Looks like a piece of 1x2 wood could fit through the vents and lock the draw up for transport.
That is a brilliant idea. Thanks. Yet, won’t secure the grill grate in place.
As long as Lodge has made the Sportsman's Grill, you'd think they would have perfected it's design by now. Which may be easier said, than done?
