Only thing that puts me off is the electronic shutter and the banding that can result shooting street at night with different types of lighting.
It's a fair reason
Wish it had a tilt screen for street photography- so I could be all in on the Lmount system, alongside my S5ii and S5iix. Guess I’ll skip this one for now, and hold on to the X100VI.
I've been missing that since the S1H. You can tilt it after you flip it out, but I get it
lovely hanging with you in Japan! Great review Dustin! see you at Cine Gear!
Was a good time! Thanks man! See you then!
Great video Dustin! 🔥
I love you
It’s shooting 3840x2160 at aspect ratio 3:2 open gate? So it’s shooting with a Pixel Aspect Ratio? What’s the go?
Great entry point for LUMIX. Might consider it
Fun little camera. Great for travel
I love my Lumix cameras and the brand in general but this camera just isnt it. I cant think of a market that I'd recommend this camera for. With no EVF, headphone jack, mechanical shutter and the most baffling of all, NO HOT SHOE AND NO BUILT IN FLASH and to top it off terrible thermals, and only 1 exposure dial on the top (the back wheel is not a good replacement) it's shot in the foot for pretty much every market. Content Creators would prefer a headphone jack and better thermal performance, photographers would prefer a mechanical shutter and hotshoe, subsets of photographers like street photographers would like the mechanical shutter to freeze motion without rolling shutter or banding lights, event photographers or club and festival shooters would want the hotshoe or at least a built-in flash for that direct flash style shooting, studio photographers... well no hot shoe so. The markets I could have seen this being used for simply have better options from different brands that are cheaper such as the Fuji X100V, Sony A7C, Lumix's own GX9, Nikon Z30 and so on. It's upset me because the thing I love about Lumix is they generally don't compromise on usability and reliability for form factor. My GX9 has the AF switch, built in flash AND HOTSHOE, 2 exposure dials on top and a exposure compensation dial, IBIS, EVF and decent Thermal performance due to it being a M43 camera. I liked that compared to the Sony A6000 series cameras, Lumix gave me 2 exposure dials in sensible places for quick exposure changes, its a small thing but it makes usability much quicker and more sensible. Lumix didn't compromise on funcationality. The same can't be said for the S9, It's stripped back in all the worse ways and for those functionality cuts it's not as cheap as it should be, at least here in Australia it's not even that cheap! It's retailing for $2699aud, in comparison the s5ii is retailing for $2999aud. The $300 difference is not worth the insane compromises they have made.
Great review Dustin!
Thanks man! Thanks for letting us hang with you!
@@DustinArmstrongPro Absolutely my pleasure!
I wish they'd do a mini GH7 version, without all the big codecs, just a convenient mini/camera gimbal
I think they'll do it. May just take some time
Nice Video...just price value at least in switzerland you could find some great deal S5ii lately for
1300 CHF +- $ so kind of strange pricing if the S9 cost more...if it would have been a sub 1k$ like 999$ camera I think they would sale much more units...if it is the same price like S5ii for me hard to chose S9 over S5ii..
Secondly I don't know why in Europe in switzerland particuliar Lumix Panasonic are so much cheaper than Sony...store prices...you can find S5iix wIth 20-60 lens for 1849 CHF usual price...
Oh for sure. It's hard to justify $1500 when it's so close to the price of the S5II. Personally I would probably recommend the S5II over it, unless you really really want something small and compact in L mount then yeah this is the way to go
I like the LUTS at 8:10. Did you make it yourself or is it available on the S9?
Made it myself! I'll have it on my website soon for free and the new LUMIX app
Thanks for the video Justin! One question: is it finally possible to use the grain simulation in all modes or it’s still limited to the L. Classic Neo and L. Monochrome? And most importantly.. if that’s the case will that be possible on the S5II as well? 😄
I believe all modes can? Don't quote me on it though. I don't think there's plans for it to go on the S5II, but doesn't mean they won't add these features to the S5II
@@DustinArmstrongPro I’ll keep my fingers crossed!! 😜 thank you!!
Man ima have to sell my osmo pocket 3 and gx85 and get this little bad boy!
Fun little camera if the limitations don't bother you!
it is a pity there is no machenical shutter, for daily shoot it is fine, but since I am doing macro flash shoot nowadays, I cannot use it.
Doesn't have a hot shoe either so flash is also a problem
@@DustinArmstrongPro right! Almost forgot this bit.
Reminds me of the cute m4/3 camera I sold a few years back, the GX85. Had enough video to realize I needed an upgrade because in camera microphone only.
This one does have a mic jack
@@DustinArmstrongPro I see that now. Would have been nice if pointed out in the launch, but I see that with a few reviews.
@@BootStrapTurnerVideographyforgot to mention it
does it have the anamorphic stabe mode?
Yes
They could have just retained the grip to make room for a mechanical shutter. That way also eliminates the need to buy a 3rd party grip. Can live without an evf but not without a mechanical shutter esp. that the sensor readout is slow.
Running in Japan stabilization footage in the next video?
Lmao that's all I'll be known for now😂
Thank you for the fun time yesterday. I used your S9 comment at LUMIX BASE TOKYO in my video. The English subtitles in the video cut of your comment are a little inaccurate because they depend on a translation app. Please forgive me.
No problem! Great meeting you I appreciate it too!
Was hoping to see a Dustin vid on this.
Going to be doing quite a few. I'm still in Japan so time is limited currently 🎌
@@DustinArmstrongPro STILL in Japan, enjoy yourself!
does this camera working in contrast detection af in 1080p 50 fps FF?
No same as S5II
Will LUMIX lab app be compatible with s52?
In the future yes. They will be phasing out LUMIX sync
It means content creators such as vloggers
This camera definitely would make it easier to edit footage on the iPads DaVinci app with this app transfer
That would be huge! New codec would be nice for that
Really disappointed you couldn't see my google searches at 7:31 in that whole shot because I had some BANGERS.
Where's the random stranger?
Who?
As someone who mostly films short YT videos and narrative work, the 15 minute recording limit is not an issue. For me, it's just as capable for narrative work given its features and strengths. I'm definitely considering adding it to my gear.
I've had zero issues with heat for short form and b roll content. Been great
I saw Videos about how there is no Mic Jack where are you putting that mic???????
There's no headphone jack. There's a mic jack though
Missed opportunity. Panasonic had so much momentum with the release of the S5ii/S5iiX. The next camera release should have been their full frame flagship in my opinion.
Not many people are buying the more expensive cameras right now. I do agree that I'd like to see a video centric flagship soon, but it does make sense to target and prioritize the beginner/more affordable market first
Agreed. They need to match/dethrone the rolling shutter and low light of A7S3 / ZVE1. There is good reason Sony didn't need A7S4 for years. The Nikon Z8 and Fujifilm X100VI are hot in 2024, they went after Fujifilm first. Hope their next flagship come soon.
For $300 more you can get a S5ii. This camera would make much more sense if it were say $899-$999. Anything under a grand.
@@chadsiford2910for sure I think an S5II makes more sense given the price unless size, weight, and portability is your main concern
@@926kmI think we just gotta hold on a bit longer to see some realllllllll exciting stuff😉
Overheats. Quickly. Pricey ..pass
That's totally fair. S5II is very close in price
Hey, stop being cool. Thanks.
I'm just trying to be like you
no hot shoe, no headphone jack, no thanks
I mean that's fair if you need those things
Things I learned :
You're in Japan 🤷

It'll be available may 29th I believe?
