Coming from black magic I put image quality over everything else. I picked up the S5 IIX for this very reason. With the addition of reliable autofocus I’m getting shots I’ve never been able to get before as a solo creator and the image is just stunning.

Everything was killer up until the music video. The music video seemed to have a lot of cool wide shots mixed in with warmer tighter shots or something. It just didn't seem consistent for some reason, her skin tone/color keeps changing. Everything after the music video looked great too so maybe it's just a music video on my phone for some reason... Legit mic drop though, I'm very tempted to make the change to Panasonic from Sony with this very enticing camera 😊
My S52X is waiting for me at the shop. Will collect it tomorrow with two bundled lenses. Majority of my usage will be in the remote areas deep in the woods, hills. Lets see how does it go. Have learnt a lot about Lumix from your videos Dustin. I never thought I will ever be buying a Panasonic camera when I am coming from Nikons and was considering Sony as my primary choice for videos. Although the S52X lacks major key feature I was interested in like full frame 4K/60 and 4K/120 (even in crop). It also has very poor rolling shutter but I think the other positives of it weigh more than the negatives.
That's how I feel and I understand completely. I was a Sony user for years heavily invested in Sony then bought a S1H and 4 years later now fully into the Lumix ecosystem. Definitely excited for Lumix to release something that at least improves on all this and hopefully removes the 4k60 crop. Just an inconvenience to have to compensate for it
I just bought my S5IIX in a kit with a 20-60 and a 50mm 1.8...I'm waiting a couple of weeks to have it in my hand...I'm dying of anxiety. I have been working with borrowed cameras for about 10 years (among those several Panasonic ones like G7, G 85, G9 and GH4) and with a Canon T3i that can't hold up anymore...so this is going to be a great upgrade for me, well now I had been experiencing limitations as a photographer and videographer for some time. Awesome video.

Great video with tons of good tipps and great work examples. I am also addicted to this Lumix (S1H) look, especially in combination with an anamorphic lens. The internal codecs are insane and stand quite a good color grading. And working with such device ist just a breeze if you overlook the overall weight for a second.
I’d say that far and away the Sony FX6 that I lucked out on 2.5 years ago has made me more valuable. Sure, it’s a higher level upfront cost, but I’ve been able to charge much more for jobs and pay for it in just a few projects. The usability is wonderful and I’ve even gotten inquires while shooting out in public because the average person our business owner just isn’t used to larger productions in my area. That said, the 5SIIX is great value. It’s a nice piece of kit and there are features that are intriguing. Not sure if the L-mount would accommodate it but maybe they make a box camera with internal NDs and IBIS as a Sony Burano competitor for a fraction of the cost.
Yeah FX6 is definitely a different category. That's the big disadvantage with the S5IIX is it doesn't "look" like a higher production camera when you totally can use it for that. But yes I'm sure when they release an S1H II, it'll be a competitor to the FX6 category of cameras
Panasonic cameras capture the best skin tones I've ever seen in most mirrorless cameras. I'm shooting with Sony at the moment. But, the S5iix has features that really suit filmmaking at an insane price point. I started out on a GH5 years ago. And went to Sony for the autofocus. But, now the S5iix puts Panasonic back in the ring. I just realized what camera I will rent next. Hopefully, I will be able to pick it up some day soon. I came from an extensive Sony background and usually am shooting on Sony when the job requires (mostly because my full time job only owns Sony) but any chance I get and when I get to choose, I choose Lumix. Now they just gotta get their skin back in the game with some more higher end cameras like an S1 II and S1H II
Hi there, Dustin: Thanks for the helpful review. For you and all the others out there who are troubled by the Warpy Corners at wide angles, using a lens with built-in LENS stabilization does help. I use two Canon EF lenses adapted on the MC-21 (Canon EF 16-35 f/4 L IS, and the Canon EF-S 10-18 STM IS) as these both have pretty good built-in lens stabilization. Anyway, thanks again for the review.
For sure that'll probably help. I think you'd get an extra stop of stabilization if the lens has it built in as well. It may only apply to LUMIX lenses with OIS though. Not sure. Appreciate you watching though!

Really at the end of the day, choose the tool that's best for you. I was on Sony for about 5 years and after using an S1H for 2 years a long with my Sony’s I realized how much more I enjoyed my S1H and how much better of a value it was. Been on only Lumix this whole year and haven't regretted it. Definitely think it's worth at least renting for a couple shoots! Or credit card.... I usually do that too 🤫
I know there’s reasons why but I find shooting anamorphic with super 35 solves a lot of rolling shutter issues. Then again, I do t use full frame anamorphic lenses for that reason so to each their own

Man, this is so hard, I watch a video from a wedding filmmaker saying that the camera nailed focus and he didnt have problem at all, I watch another one from a guy saying that he would trust the camera auto focus for work , another one says that the auto focus in low light is great, and so on, then I watch this video and he says that the af in low light is unusable, tbh I think I will end up buying the A6700 or try to find a deal on a ZVE 1 , I will mostly shoot family videos and I like to document my kids and do short docs and AF is a must, saying so many people talking about the AF , some saying its very good and some saying its not good enough. (sigh)

I have the S5iiX and haven't experimented with V-Log much yet. I do weddings, getting into corporate and real estate. So you shot everything in V-log, even the night scenes? except when you used the Blackmagic monitor?
Pretty much everything yes, even the night scenes. Sometimes I shoot in blackmagic RAW, but usually V-LOG straight out of camera. It'll give you more dynamic range shooting in V-LOG, but it's a little extra work in post.
@@DustinArmstrongPro One more thing, when you record open gate 6k what's the storage like? I tired on a 2TB SSD (I did have other stuff in) and available record space was 30mins. What do you usually use for storage?
Great video and work! I have been looking for a more compact gimbal ready camera to compliment my Komodo. I just pulled the trigger on the S5iix today. I shoot primarily anamorphic at 1.75x using an Aivascope paired with voightlander APO lenses and and 1.8x with Vazens anamorphic lenses. I’m really intrigued with the IBIS for anamorphic setting on this camera. Any thoughts on your experience with that?
Nice! I don't think you'll be disappointed! Yes in my experience when it comes to the Anamorphic IBIS it does a really good job unless you can't match the IBIS setting to the exact squeeze. So for example with the SIRUI 1.6x. I tried using 1.5x as my anamorphic IBIS setting and it wasn't very pleasing. It's possible that the 1.75x may be less noticeable though. You'd just have to test it. But the 1.8x with the Vazen it has a setting for that so it'll perform great in that scenario.
Thinking about upgrading to this from a Sony A6500. This camera seems perfect but I’m a bit worried about the lens selection vs Sony. I know there are some Sigma’s for it but they don’t have stabilization. I’ve been down this rabbit hole for weeks lol.
I came from Sony and I haven't had any issues with lens selection in my experience. Stabilization on lenses too doesn't matter much to me because the in body stabilization is already way better than Sony without dual IS. just my opinion though

Really good tips for me, i'm a proud owner of the S5, and I want to buy the S5IIX. I always had Canon cameras, and to this day I have red line lenses, that's why I use an adapter for the camera, and I know I'm not getting all the juice out of it. There's quite a bit of different lighting conditions there as well and we didn't light any of it. All ambient light

I shoot Sony as well. I have the FX3, FX30, and A7SIII. I've just picked up the Panasonic S5IIX and I look forward to seeing what this camera can do.

I don't thing that's possible but I could be wrong. You would need a dummy battery to power externally if you're recording via SSD
