The CS community is so strange. The greatest thing since sliced bread will be invented and they'll complain it makes life too easy. 4 years ago we whined for Dust 2 to be gone, now it's Mirage. What's next?

Dust 2 influenced a lot of FPS games. I remember a game I used to play back then, Assault Fire, also has a Dust 2 inspired map. Surprised it's not S tier.
I guess its not S tier because this tierlist is clearly evaluated at the current time. Obviously back then Dust2 was a milestone. Same could be said about the first tanks, but that does not mean you would like to have a WW1 tank in a modern army.

Insertion 2 has an uncanny-valley feel for me as a swede. It's crazy how well the creator(s) managed to capture the "swedish-town feel". Great map!
The amount of detail on this map is just insane. For example the Anomaly easter eggs are just perfect
You should do a full break down of Anubis with various competitive theory and such. Its still hard to wrap my head around.

It hurts me to know that cobble never made a return. I remember loving the map whenever it still had the correct t spawn, but lopping off half the map was probably the worst thing that they could have done for it. Unfortunately it seems it won't make a return for a very long time, if ever.

Yeah I don't get why it was so hated at the time, it made sense. Sure it was too open for the T's but it was on a big slope so the T's had advantages, they just needed more cover and probably open the doors to the CT's to defend
I may be biased because cs_assault and all of the clones it spawned were my favorites in 1.6, but I get nostalgia thinking back to tearing up those maps in the older days of the 1.6 era
Yes, assault was probably my most favorite map when I played 1.6

There's just something about Shipped that makes me never forget it, despite how bland it looks. Something about fighting it out on a moving ship was always cool as hell. I definitely agree with C or even low B, I think it's really underrated, and with a visual update, it could come back beautifully
I loved Insertion 2, it was such a cool idea. Sometime you should rate the Arms Race maps. Unlike the other war games, it is still popular, despite its several flaws, but has received relatively little love from Valve.
I really wish they kept it in the Hostage mode, simply because it would be amazing to have a Hostage map that plays differently than all the other ones.

Engage is my favorite non-active duty competitive map. When it came out my friends and I queued that map a LOT and it's has no broken spots, it makes good use of features like ladders, vents, and staircases, the entries and defend points play well, and the concept is very unique (CAR FACTORY!!!) that every match is guaranteed to be fun.

It's not pretty good. It was overhyped for so long only to be left out. Plus, it doesn't look as good as it did in 1.6 or Source. The map is just too bright, lacks contrast and too many pointless details.

I expected a lot from the tuscan. It's not that mid, pretty good a-b tier map. But for some reason it's not as exciting as oldstayers such as Nuke, Mirage, even d2

Videos like this always make me sad that the vast majority of them will only become more difficult to play on and fade into obscurity as Valve makes the game more "streamlined" by hiding the server browser. I'd like to see you do a tier list of the wingman maps. I think its a super strong gamemode and sometimes I like it better than 5v5, and definitely more than hostage.
Strongly agree with the high placement of insertion2. Such a throwback to old css public servers with custom maps. Love it!

Yeah, for me Operation Bloodhound, Wildfire and Hydra had the best map pools in recent memory.
Insertion 2 is so good it should be permanently in the game. Also from Wingman maps Hive should be permanently in too.
I felt so betrayed when they removed Insertion 2. God I was mad that I had to actually learn to play Mirage and whatnot
I agree. Insertion 2 was amazing and I queued for it over and over again when it was in the game. It needs to be brought back.

Seaside is an amazing map. When it was in the game we played it in competitive on repeat. I also liked it way more BEFORE they made it so the bomb teleports out of the water.
man, my earliest memories of playing CSGO were on the Backalley map, probably wasnt anything good competitively but very nostalgic for me, same with Rails, it wasnt anything too special but i really liked the atmosphere of the map and wish hadnt gotten forgotten
I miss Seaside. It might not be the most balanced map, but it was always fun and quirky.
same, ive met a really good online friend on that map
back in 2013-2014 when i got my league of legends friends into csgo, seaside was the map they all played constantly, far more than even dust2 so... when that map was removed from the active pool, it was hard for me to get them to play again, once they learned to play mirage and cache, it was easier to get them to play again. actually at that point, they were the ones that constantly asked and/or invited me to party to play
Seaside was fun.
Insertion 2 was a great and unique experience to play, it feels like playing CS but in a completely different way, in my opinion one of the best CS maps ever made and probably the top 1 hostage ❤
I loved that map with all my heart. Such a great unique map, and so many ways you could play it. It is my number 1 map that I think should make a return.
Insertion 2 is low-key one of the best hostage maps ever. Just felt so good to play on (would be horrid as a bomb def map though)
Overpass is S Tier for me! Thanks for the Nostalgia flashback, forgot about most of the maps, but now i remember about the fun times at them in operations.

I've played it, it feels like a B tier map. With proper polish, could be an A tier map. It feels really similar to Mirage in some ways.

I loved playing Iris, I thought it was really unique map, unusual layout but I think it works, you can have shoot outs all over the map with LOADS of options for rotates

Honestly I wish Austria would make a comeback, I have so many fond memories on that map with my friends and it truly felt like a comp viable map. What do y’all think?

It's a great map. It has snow! We need more wintery maps. And also, some nighttime ones would be nice.
Yooo so many good memories of austria. Played really well, was glad to see it in the c.
Snow, elevation changes, corners, inside, outside, played good with ak and awp. Lacked the ability to fall back like nuke but had strong and interesting middle with balcony. Damn i miss it so much.
Actually stopped playing a while ago, hope to see cbble and cache back in the pro scene and i feel so old i might find a server with old operation maps playlist to bathe in nostalgia lmao

I make maps for a completely different game (SC2), but even so I find your interest in the mapmaking scene and view on the importance of new maps really refreshing and motivating. Ofc it helps that you're also really entertaining, keep up the great work.

So many of these obscure maps you rated highly and I appreciate that.
I would personally bump down chlorine, ive played that map a good amount and don't think its that great.
I would bump up abbey, thrill, iris one spot each.
Also, after playing what is possibly approaching 1000 rounds on canals, I can say its actually pretty good.
So much nostalgia man, I've played csgo for so long but I haven't even played half of these maps, Now that you gave us the list I'll try playing these maps with my friends.

You should mention, that you're ranking these in terms of 5v5 competitive. Some maps lower on the list shine for me in 16v16 community casuals aka the places they were made for. And 16v16 has a different place in map design.
as someone who only really started playing in 2019, it’s insane to see just how many maps have had their moment in this game. it’s funny too, because when I first started playing I would complain about always playing the same maps but now I’d probably hate having to play comp matches on like 90% of these maps lol
As a casual fan of competitive I had no idea the game had so many maps. I thought CS had like 8 only.

Great list! Would bump dust 2 and inferno. Italy is S tier for sure. When that opera hits just right it's perfect.
Was needing a video like this as recently I been looking at map creators on maps as I faced the map creator of Boyard in wingman and he made Apollo and a dangerzone and Extraction. Love looking at these maps that were added in the game as it's been a while since looking at some of them.

Unfortunately for me the only time I ever got into a real comp game on Insertion was against a 5 stack of spin-botters, so although I technically “played” the map, it was not something I would consider basing an opinion off of
cruise was absolutely amazing as a deathmatch map. played it to death back in the days

Man abbey was amazing, it had the best parts from mirage and inferno, its a shame people dont remember it fondly :(

You got your cs_ maps with agency and insertion2, Santorini and Season would be a banger, especially in the pro scene and you got your well-known classics like D2, Nuke, Inferno and Mirage (until it gets removed which will definitely happen:) )
Finally someone who agrees that seaside is great. I have great memories of it and its no doubt my favorite map

If you feel like it, I'd love seeing you rank all the Wingman maps. I've been a big enjoyer of those in the last 2-3 years.
Subzero is still one of my favorite maps that they brought in then took out it was fun to play. Also this shows that valve has a problem of releasing maps into csgo but not giving them the full attention they need and rework needed to make some of these maps better. Like a lot of the D tier maps are solid maps that just to be worked on and fixed up a bit but instead they make terrible changes if they make any and it ruins the map and considering how they force fed Vertigo and Ancient down our throats even tho they played terribly when they were first introduced. This video is the proof valve needs to give new maps more chances and work on them instead of just throwing them away.
Subzero should have received the vertigo/ancient treatment it was an outstanding map. Plus visually it was very pleasing to look at.

Well, the thing is, Valve rarely buys a map off of a creator, so actually the community maps are optimised by the map makers themselves like FMPONE and others, not Valve. This might explain their hesitation when it comes to community made maps.

Gwalior was also a FMPONE map btw, it came out around the time of the skin update so got heavily overlooked. And Season was played in the pro-scene as well back then. Its the map IBP threw on against NCG.
Workout is an underrated map, me and the boys loved playing that shit, when they took breach out and had workout, it was like my replacement breach. Breach is also highly underrated and should be looked at more and played more. Current breach is cool, A site still needs a little work imo, but its solid, I preferred the layout of old A, but the cover makes sense

Favela is a map that I played when I start getting into 5v5 competitive.
Basalt is my favorite map last year.
Austria is best looking map for me.
Insertion2 is really fun and special.
me and my friend do not play CS anymore, but those interesting community maps are very important part of CSGO.

List is quite well placed and I was first sceptical about agency, but tbh... we all know that hostage maps don't work well but from all hostage maps agency did by far the best to work so I think it deserves a high place.
You didnt include 2v2 Wingman maps in that tier list. I would love to see tier list with those maps

A quick shot of Amigo next to Mirage as an S tier map would have been funny. But I still love your video's!
glad to see Nuke in S-tier, makes sense to have Mirage up there too but I totally agree that it has to go. Maybe down the line after a strong remake or strong gameplay-changing modifications have been made it should slide back in and we'd all be happy, but it needs something more than a bench to make it feel any different.
You should go back & play the maps in the "?" tier & update it after, I think that would be interesting!
Because I don't remember ever seeing some of those eithers & would love to watch the delve into'em

Man. We're getting old, when you mentioned being nostalgic about maps I tought about 1.6, but wow the operations that brought these maps were long ago. I was still in school up until Vanguard.
Fun fact: Seaside is one of the most played maps in counterblox. Probably because their recreation of it was done well but it’s really just a fun map

Bringing back santorini and season would make me come back to cs. Such good maps.
Cool video. CSGO is really stale for me but there are so many operation maps I never played and some of the ones I did play were very good.
The map Marquis seemed to be heavily inspired by the maps "Underground" and "Resistance" from Call of Duty MW3, since the layout and artstyle are very similar to those respective maps.
Also, for me, Season, and the OG version of Tuscan (or even cpl_mill for that matter) are easy S-tier maps. Ever since I played them back in the Source days, I fell in love with how well they plays. Both are definitely classic community maps at their best. I do agree with most of the list though. Although, cs_backalley has a special place in my heart. It was a fun to play map from before the 1.6 era, and one that worked surprisingly well for CS:GO, so for me, that map is a solid A-tier. Easily one of the best hostage maps in my opinion. It was made by "Tyr" (from Barking Dog Studios, later known as Popdog) and "HGrunt" way back in the day.

I loved Santorini, such a great map.
Iris was great. I won many pistol rounds by boosting everyone into the mid vents. The layout wasn't too complicated either.
You kind of hurt my feelings when you didn't put Overpass in S tier. That map is brilliant. The layout of it is just so different to all the other map and it plays very well.

If we factor in "fun" as a metric for ranking the maps. Assault INSTANTLY goes to S tier for me. I'm still sad it's gone. I've played it more in csgo than I have in 1.6 it was just a fun mindless map to go in have some fun and leave.
Additionally Cobble and Santorini are tow of my favorite maps. Cobble pre-halloween ruination update was just a fun map.
With fun as a factor Train goes to F tier for sure. Cant think of a more unfun map

I wish you explained what you didn't like about De_Lite, it is by far my favorite operation map, and I felt it's design was a modern dust_2
Just so the idea is not only in my head:
A map where you don't take fall damage, only goes down and you can only shoot down on your enemies but the map has non eucledian physics and it's acutally only like 10 floors high but any floor will look on your screen as the top one.
Not sure if the old engine has the tech to pull this off, but it would be fun!

Insertion 2 was way much fun to play compared to Danger Zone.
Was a mix of cs with payday, idk...it really worked well, could really have it's own game mode and it would be OK.
Nuke has to be at least S tier

I only remember Mikla as the map that got insane backlash by turkish people xD, it was sad to see the miscommunication between the devs and turkish players as the update to fix the issue was never truly adressed by turkish players, it was shunned in my country as far as I remember whoops. Other than that I've never played it before so I can't say much about it. Your take is mostly on-par with mine but I'd put ancient in D tier, the overall lush green theme has never grown onto me and its hard to see where the enemies are, that factor just hurts my eyes...
Wow seeing all these old maps for the first time in years was just a wave of memories
The outlay of Nuke allows for great plays. Unfortunately it also makes it hard for beginners to wrap their head around

I played grind 10 men with my friends a lot. It’s a really solid map imo. Really fun to play
