We played a game of competitive Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on the original Operation maps from Operation Payback - seaside, favela, library, FMPone's museum, motel, and downtown! It's crazy these maps were official, here's... what happened.

@TheWarOwl thanks for inspiring me to start my career in Voice Acting and eventually a YT channel of my own. 🙏
ay yo song list tho?
During the first operation, these maps actually couldn't be ranked up or down in, as they were casual only. To get the silver coin, you'd have to put 30 hours into casual, to get gold, 50 hours in. Downtown was a pretty good casual map imo. Also, I love Seaside enough that I wish they always kept it around.
I must have forgotten this! I thought they were in competitive.
@@TheWarOwl Funny how as a longtime fan I can actually vividly remember you describing that aspect of the operation back in like 2013. Shit bro I remember your Natural Selection 2 videos
wasn't the ibuypower scandal on one of these? i think there was a clip that was always shown about that match
Some of these maps make a LOT more sense when you realize they're for 10v10
@@rooty_rootz W memory
Library is so badass, not only a map with only one bombsite, but a map that is practically ALL bombsite
who the hell wants to bomb a library?
@@its.Sarthak101 maybe the terrorists are jealous that they cant read idk
@@its.Sarthak101 targeting prestigious libraries would be an incredible tactic to erase alot of history and knowledge
@@polyaddict That was the case in Egyptian times, not now when everything has a digital copy somewhere.
@@SonTomNetwork digital copies dont have all the information nor history of actual books, original sketches, etc
I find it hillarious how no matter what WarOwl does, it inevitably ends with at least one instance of Negev spamming
The irony is that it is on the map called Library!
You know he did it for the meme?
To be fair to Library, if there was indeed a big room of shelves with just books on them, a Negev is exactly what anybody would bring to a gunfight. That bit's realistic
Seaside should get a revamp and be added permanently like cache. It’s a really fun map it just needs a visual overhaul and a bunch of tweaks/fixes
Hell yeah
Why visual overhaul
best map
it looks like st.marc and i hate this map
just fix mid a lil and thats all right?
Back when people complained less about map balance and focused more on having fun with friends, never kill the kid inside of you
fun community maps and servers should make a come back
It's all competitive now. Go pro, earn money and sell skins :)
They're kinda still there, just, dead... (TF2 still has a lot of community map players at least)
They aren't coming back, sadly. Unless it can be used for an engagement algorithm to keep people playing and spending, it goes in the bin.
Seeing Seaside puts a smile on my face
Best map !
Left 4 dead.
6:21 Oh man this reminds me of good old poolday. I spent countless hours just playing vs the expert bots, trying to drop my team ak47s or m4s so that if they won the round, the next round they wouldn't need to pick up any other silly weapons and just spawn with what I gave them. How nostalgic...
Finally, some apreciation to the insane early operations maps, those are still so much fun
I think Library is a throwback to them good 'ol 1.6 'fy' maps. fy_pool_day, fy_snow, $2000$, fy_iraq etc
UPD: Ah. Didn't get to the part of the video where you mention it. That makes sense that you would feel that way. It's odd that you didn't mention it from the start
They have released so many interesting maps via the Operation over the years. I really hope Valve buys Engage and adds it into the game next (& temporarily bench Mirage/Overpass for a reskin)
I dont think Mirage will be benched, it is their most played map. Overpass could be benched though
@@SoothingPlaces Well I would like it to be temporary regardless of Mirage or Overpass. Simply because the map textures look old and they could use an update for a new look. Similar to what Train/Inferno/Nuke/Dust2 had.
I've said this same thing on the csgo reddit for multiple years periodically at this point but they should definitely separate ranks into two pools.
1) The official rank for maps that are in the active duty rotation and the same maps all pro players play too
2) Another rank for all other maps and they should have a pool of maps that rotate consistently (would be a great way to get old operation maps back) OR maybe even allow community to vote on top workshop maps that would be added on competitive play.
Since there are a lot of players that can get tired of the same maps over and over again we need an official matchmaking way to play different variety of maps. The solution cant be to "lol just go play this obscure map hub on faceit that maybe 50 people will actively play and you cant reliably find games whenever you want"
library sounds like a pretty novel concept if executed with today's competitive in mind
Library gets points for trying something different than yet another foursquare map. A for concept, D for execution.
I play it for a death match when I introduce people to CSGO sometimes, as it’s so small.
I have more hours played on Seaside than I have on Dust II and Mirage combined...I love that map
Really let me down WarOwl. Thought you summoned a new operation
I remember all those maps, I hope you do more videos about these maps, it brings good memories
Ice World Gun Games were so good. We need some like flash back maps in Gun Games. Wolfenstein was also dope
Library is actually pretty cool if you play it for fun rather than too seriously (also with 5v5 max, but 2v2/3v3 is better)
Thanks for bringing these maps in this series. Me and my friends used to play whole day during our college days. What a trip down the memory lane.
I love displate, i have had a monster hunter poster for 3 years, and now they're big enough to sponsor my favorite youtubers. Shoutout to them for having high quality, easy to place and adjust posters that look f-ing amazing!
the transition to negav sprays, and the pan of the bullets flying. chefs kiss type of editing!
I appreciate when sponsorships are sought out collaborations that are relevant to the creator and used by the creator
I’ve always wanted to get some Displate art for my walls, but never saw it from a CC I watched.
Finally it’s here, thanks WarOwl, some epic pieces of metal are now on their way.
I love these kinds of videos, please make more :D
Hey, dude... When you talked about playing fy maps in 1.6 public... I felt that.
But for me at least Casual kind of gives me that same feeling. :)
Ice World?! 🧊 🌎
I really enjoy the more fleshed out videos, but I also miss the more frequent videos aswell. Great stuff
i think and i HOPE this will be a series where you play all the maps from past operations. i need the nostalgia.
I wonder how much fun it would be to play CSGO on the TF2 maps gravelpit and junction since they both have 2 control points you can capture at the same time you can play them as bomb sights
This is a really interesting video concept! Would love a series of these from each operation!
Man, this brought back so many good memories. In my opinion CSGO was much more fun back in the day with these maps!
YES, I knew you'd make a 5v5 in library after the last video
I thought you guys were gonna play black gold it honestly looks so iconic even if I've never played it
Some days ago i was watching some videos of those old maps, now you publish this. I miss all the earlier operations maps :(
Seaside and Castle were my go to maps around Operation Phoenix. Great times, always love to recall them.
This really took me back. I still rock my gold Operation Payback coin on the scoreboard.
I distinctly remember playing all those funky spots on de_seaside like post, middle on crack, hiding under stairs, etc. Because the game was still so new, hostage maps were just as fun, Motel and Downtown especially. Back then, you still had to rescue all the hostages and they were on foot as the randomization and carrying of hosties came via an update in late 2015.
It'll be interesting to see your take on Operation Bravo maps. I personally loved de_ali (smoke and shotty rushes were chaos) but de_gwalior was fun (and whose middle perhaps influenced de_anubis?) and de_ruins felt like an absolutely massive map that influenced some aspects of de_ancient.
Library reminds me of the old custom 1.6 maps and I love it for that
Great video, WarOwl. Actually laughed out loud a couple times as well
Thank you for this amazing nostalgia trip
My favorite map from back in the days was de_rats. i had so much fun on all the different variants of it. 11/10 map
does CSGO have a 24/7 rats server? That was my go-to in the 1.6 days...so fun
@@cameronielsenRats, and also that one on a airport. cant remember the name, i think it had some numbers! was the shjiiiit
loving the crypt of the necrodancer music in the background
Thunder was my favourite map in the operation. So many memories playing that map. Really enjoyed the setting - layout was fun but frustrating.
the theming of these maps were actually really cool compared to today
i didn't know there was this much big maps, also the lightings in these maps look astonishing tbh.
wish they brought back these maps into the casual pool.
8:12 I love the Dicey Dungeons music choice :)
you should play all operation maps, that'll bring back so many memories!!
Great vid. My favorite creator of all time fr. I'll stop anything I am doing just to watch a new video haha
Great vids as always WarOwl ! keep going :)
Love how Flashy’s just gone full scouter mode after Kenny complemented his scouting in that houngougnogugng video
Ah, I sure miss the days of just goofing around on random, really unbalanced maps, either with friends or random people, not focusing on stats and just having fun..
Library is actually horrifying, I love it
Man that snippet of Chrono Trigger music during Motel hit hard
Holy shit, this is very epic warowl
Iceworld was awesome, and Pool Day was amazing as well. I did a remake of Pool Day years ago for CSGO, its been pretty popular on the workshop.
Early CSGO community maps were just pure fun and as Warowl said, there wasn't so much bs like people do these days arguing back and forth what's balanced, broken and whatnot on Reddit or Steam forums.
When he said, that he has something cool to show us, for a second there I thought it might be a closer. Never change WarOwl, never change
The Dicey Dungeon music really works for hype mode!
Warowl footage with no face cam has this weird new energy to it. Ik it was unintentional but it kinda felt more casual even though all the energy was still there
Thanks WarOwl for a great video
I loved playing competitive on these maps, it was great fun
I appreciate showing the jump at 3:00 for later payoff.
seaside will be one my favorites forever
the 2 tap at 9:30 was insane
Loving the ad transitions lately
Would love to see more operation maps
You know you reached the good part of War owl video when tempting fate plays
Haven't watched it yet but library was fucking terrible lol just Negev through all the bookshelves. Thunder bank were good but seaside was just so fun in comp and in casual gotta be my favourite scout maps. Should have played the maps on the old version of csgo for authenticity
I'd love seeing a pro showmatch on some of these maps
Dude, iceworld!! Fuck yeah! Remember being 14 and going to internet cafes with my friends and we knew everyone there and at around 2 or 3 am, we would all play on LAN maps like iceworld, de_aim, the one with the Awp.. Damm, good times!
"I have to reload my negev" i never heard this from anyone
Bravo is up next, Warowl!
When I see library I can only think back to Time Crisis 3... plenty of cheap angles in there too. Oh, and it was also on fire.
6:27 I miss community gaming. Matchmaking (especially SBMM) has decimated both communities and the ability to find a game in a reasonable amount of time.
Also, Seaside gang.
definitely doesn't help that Valve has refused to upgrade the awful community server browser. Like, it's almost EXACTLY the same as half life's multiplayer browser from 1998, but grey instead of green. It's absurd.
@@bermuda333 I can't fault them for that considering that most games now don't even HAVE a server browser.
@@Jmcgee1125 uhh yeah? and that's what sets csgo apart! entire sections of the community play SOLELY on community servers. The least they could do would be to update the browser so it wasn't atrocious
Looking at Seaside, I feel like it took a little inspiration from "de_port" in Source. The map's shapes feel slightly similar, but Seaside takes out the weird extensions and extra pathways that made Port a little bigger and more overwhelming than it had to be.
I was just thinking about how there are no old cs videos on these maps and boom here we are

YES! Nostalgia! Bring me back to the early operations!
library seems like a really fun take on maps like nuketown and shipment, being condensed microcosms of the gameplay loop that massively speed up the pace of the game, while sacrificing most of the balance. I actually think it should still be playable on its own "playlist" as a sort of novelty, it seems like a good map for people to train their audio awareness, wallbangs, and reaction to small movements (since other players are visible through the cracks in the bookcases) but I think they should probably make full walls not wall-bangable at least lol... and uh, maybe just disallow LMG buys on it lmfao
overall I respect it a lot. I like experimentation like that.
an ad inside the video that's actually not bad
that's warowl for you i guess
finaly new video
I feel like this could be a ton of effort, but CS with no skybox or like the invisible boundaries could be incredibly goofy and fun. Especially when combined with bump mines to get to ridiculous places.
Gee if only WarOwl would frag like this on a soloq video.
great vid, is there a chance we could see you guys play dust1, aztec and something old as well?
oh hye, seaside. i loved that map
5:09 If you remove some of the bookshelfs to have a circular area on the center on the map for doing circles
That just look like a perfect Survival map for the Zombies mode of Call Of Duty
Like...
-Have Pack A Punch at the Center Area of the map
-Have 1 perk for each room (Juggernaut and Speed Cola is my choice)
-Have 2 Mystery Box location in the map one for each of the rooms
And it is done the perfect survival map
There used to be an old map called hide_n_seek. it was a short neighborhood street. Terrorist team= 1 knife only and As many CTs as the server would allow; no weapon (hands). gravity at 50%. There was a timeout period that would allow the CTs to hide and the CTs that got tagged became observers not additional taggers.
6:20 omg iceworld. I was there, it's been three thousand years....
WarOwl: "They're actually camping outside!"
Me: "Isn't that normal? Like, how do you stake a tent down indoors? And you definitely don't want an open fire...
Haha nice crypt of the necrodancer background music :)
I love how he says "Favela~ 😃"
Still didn't believe that was an official map, I remember people talking about it but I thought it was a community made map
these are all community made maps
@@Slimek Ooh, makes sense now. I thought he said it was like official game maps
@@ChromaCaipira they were official in the sense that they were added to the game for the operation. that's what the original purpose of operations was, to 'pay back' community mappers. hence operation 'payback'
@@Slimek That's interesting, quite a nice idea they had
@@ChromaCaipira yes, and while the later operations still had community maps they started experimenting with missions and skin rewards etc etc and it took the general focus away from the maps. thankfully they are still adding community maps periodically but sadly the general playerbase doesn't care much for them, unless they have to complete an operation mission
I have some good memories on seaside and library xD
Do one, where its random which playermodel someone gets so some CTs look like Ts vice versa but they still play on the same team
(maybe just stick to one T and one CT model, or change it up every round, just so you cant remember who is on your team)
12 v 12 Pool day flashbacks from the library part.
A WarOwl CS GO vid?!? LFG!!!😮😊
Man I love Library, it's still super fun in Arms Race and Demolition (same with Pool Day), shame Valve hasn't shaken up the Arms Race and Demolition map pools since fun layouts are great for that.
I also really love Motel, super disappointing you didn't show much of it. Sneaking through rooms, relying on hard flicks since the map is so open and enemies can pop out from anywhere, it's not really like anything in CS at the moment and I love it for that. Would be way better in Hostage Casual 10v10 than crap like Militia and Assault, so many players on an open map like that would be hilarious.
Library needs to be expanded as a full map and have the Library just as a site
I miss seaside, it was so fun.
please make like a 2 min highlight reel of you just sitting alone on motel
crypt of the necrodancer music, respect
Like the dicey dungeons ost, gonna do the no *eresed* comp someday?
