"He was in the Eagles? No wonder he's so good." Correction: He was so good, the Eagles invited him to join them. This song is from before Joe joined them, and he brought this swagger with him on Hotel California and The Long Run. The crazy outro solo on Life in the Fastlane is Joe.

The last album recorded had several members of The Eagles guesting on it...same producer....and that's how Joe joined The Eagles. He was with James Gang first as a lot of people commented “Funk 49” then went solo with Rocky Mountain High & Life’s Been Good as hits. That is a fun song and video off the album But Seriously Folks. You both would enjoy reacting to that song. As a solo artist he co-wrote and performed the song “In The City” for the cult classic movie “The Warriors” and recorded with the Eagles for their Long Run Album. Prior to that he was one of the guitarist on the Hotel California song that you reacted to. Joe like fellow Eagles member Timothy B. Schmidt has played with so many other artist in the recording studio it makes your head swim trying to list them.

Check out The James Gang’s “Funk 49” and “Walk Away” for a couple of the most badass guitar riffs ever crafted. “Life’s Been Good” is another great solo track. Sounds as fresh as the day he recorded it. And, though I am sure it has been mentioned, he was in The James Gang first, then he started his solo career, then he joined The Eagles ahead of Hotel California where he single-handedly turned them into a rock and roll band. "where he single handedly turned them into a rock band"???? what a blatantly misinformed statement. Are you sure that's what you want to say, or did your daddy tell you that?? If so, your ignorance of the eagles is strong. You do realize he's NOT on the (first) eagles greatest hits album at all, right?? I saw the Eagles several times in the 70's and they were rock before he joined, let me assure you of that. Anyone who says otherwise is an ignoramus. LOL, perhaps you should buy the proverbial vowel and listen to On the Border at least once before you say such things.

Definitely talkbox. This song was actually put out by his band Barnstorm, the band he formed after James Gang. He joined the Eagles in about '75, for the Hotel California album. It is him and Don Felder who do the duelling guitar solo on the song Hotel California. He's played with a few other bands at various times, too, and collabs. His solo stuff was interspersed throughout the '70s all the way to the teens (I think his last album was Analog Man around 2012). Last I heard he was touring with the Eagles again.

At the Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia Mo in 1974, there were 300,000 people, and both the Eagles and Joe Walsh with Barnstorm were playing on Saturday night, and the Eagles were the finale and Joe Walsh came out and played with them. Not long after that, he officially joined the Eagles. It's a memory imprinted on my brain.

Joe started out with James Gang, went solo for several years, then joined the Eagles, but also still solos doing his own thing.. I’m 66 yrs old now and have seen him in concert too many times to count over the years, and also have every album. To say he is a musical genius is an understatement!! And the icing on the cake is his great sense of humor, both in some of his music and his stage presence.❤️

Voice box = a larynx, your vocal cords, which facilitate speech, shouting, and singing.
TALK BOX = a guitar effect that turns a guitarist's mouth, skull, and throat into a speaker cabinet, allowing the guitarist to shape played notes into words and vocal expressions.

    Joe Walsh:
    Member of “The Mesales” 1965-1967
    Member of the “James Gang”1969-1972
Member of “Barnstorm”, but marketed as a “Solo Artist”1972-1975
    Member of the “Eagles” 1975-Present
Walsh did one solo project before he joined the Eagles, and many after the Eagles broke up from 1980-1992. He has also done solo work after the Eagles reformed.
That was a “Talkbox” he was playing in “Rocky Mountain Way”. The song was released on the Barnstorm album “The smoker you drink, the player you get” in 1973.
Walsh said on the Howard Stern show on June 12, 2012 that the song was inspired while he was cutting the grass in his front yard in Colorado. After pausing to look at the snow capped Mountains, he said seeing the snow capped Mountains, he thought to himself “The Rocky Mountain Way was better than the life I had” and made him realize he had no regrets leaving the James Gang. He said that event formed the basis for the song.

There are others like "Free Bird" that most of the musicians I have ever known hate to play (not sure why - so many times we had to cover it in the early 1980's?) Back circa 1980, I actually dig the voice box thing with our lead guitar player. Joe did it himself if I recall. We had to rehearse it to keep it in sync. It is a pretty simple device - switch the amp over to a horn driver through a tube going into your mouth in front of the microphone. That is the sound.

What no one mentioned is that Walsh wrote this song about Nixon and Watergate: "He's telling us this and he's telling us that, changes it every day..." In live performance he would change the next line from "Casey's at bat" to "Nixon's at bat".

I was going to comment on that song... Joe wrote it and it's one of my favorites on Hotel California!

As well as a solo artist, he was in the Eagles and the James Gang. Hits with all of them. Talk box (tube) with his guitar was the solo then straight guitar… Awesome guitarist along with a unique voice. I think he would play with any good band if he had a chance.

Yeah, he really can sing. But that's hidden here to good effect, because they 8-bitted his mic. It's like singing through an old fashioned dial telephone.

Started as James Gang in the sixties then Joe Walsh til 75 when he joined The Eagles.Story goes he built the talk box using an old school gym loud speaker. One of the best Les Paul players he really knows how to set the guitar up incredibly.

Joe Walsh is right up there with Jimi He drip, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan as guitar god! Always thought of him and British guitarist Peter Frampton as the coolest guys!

Have you all checked out Life's Been Good yet? Essential solo Walsh there, it's fun and funny and the guitar work is top notch.

I don’t think he was ever overshadowed. When you have a group you play to your strengths and everyone has to blend for the best sound but many artists took solo time even when in a larger band. Most of them are perfection! Don’t say it’s best alone or in a group…if the music touches you, then it worked so don’t analyze it just enjoy it. We’re here for music appreciation, yes?😊

Joe has one of the most relaxed hands on a guitar that I've ever seen. He started in James Gang, then he moved to the Eagles, and he sprinkle's in his own songs when they play with the Eagles.

I saw him play this live with "Ringo's All Star Band" featuring Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Burton Cummings (The Guess Who), Dave Edmunds (Dave Edmunds), Glenn Frey, Don Felder, Joe Walsh (The Eagles), and Ringo's son on drums. This group played "Rocky Mountain Way", "I hear you Knockin", These Eyes", "Yellow Submarine", "Drive My Car"....there were more but those are the songs I remember.
Ringo's All Star band was the second best concert I ever went to.......the best being Chuck Berry. I have seen more concerts than you could even begin to imagine. I also caught (and kept) Jim Dandy's washboard after Black Oak Arkansas played "When Electricity Came to Arkansas". I had to mention that as my third favorite moment.
My cousin and Leon Russell. WOW.! What a story this is. My cousin makes false teeth for a living. He used to cast live spiders using the same technical methods and create these really cool gold spiders of great detail. He begged a roadie to give one to Leon before the concert. When Leon came out, there it was, a gold spider, stuck to his lapel, shining in the light. Leon said "I want to thank my friend out there for this really cool spider". That was my fourth favorite concert.

The talkbox is a guitar effect, where instead of sending the sound from your guitar to a speaker cabinet, it goes to a box where the sound gets fed into a thick plastic tube extending from the box. The other end of the tube is positioned so it ends next to the musician's vocal microphone. The player puts the end of the tube into their mouth, then uses their mouth to shape the sound of the guitar coming out of the tube. The vocally manipulated sound is then picked up by the vocal microphone. Peter Frampton was probably the most famous talkbox user, on songs like Show Me The Way and Do You Feel Like We Do from the Frampton Comes Alive album, but this song predates that by a couple of years.

The James Gang were really good and Joe Walsh played with a number of bands, as well as solo; he was always on and off with The Eagles, but they were at their best with him, as he was known as one of the very serious guitar talents of that time.
