For how few different notes he’s playing on the outro solo, it’s a testament to how feel and groove is better than a flurry of notes. Beyond a cool song
Those seemingly random squeal like notes are pinch harmonics. Very cool & sort of difficult to do at the right time & casually 'throw in' there. Love the song & reaction.
Lex is exactly right to describe the texture of a voice, comparing it to the texture one feels. Brad asks "you see something and think of a sound? (I paraphrase)" Yes, that's true. Art has texture, whether its visual or audial.
Leather is a perfect descriptor for his voice. Leather is kind of old feeling, worn, soft but can be rough but it's never cheap. It's got depth and richness to it, just like his voice.
I've binged a few of their reactions now and her descriptions of the songs never fail to make me smile or laugh my ass off. Lex, your imagination is as beautiful as that smile. For whatever reason this came up on my feed... I'm glad it did, and I will check the rest of your content out. It's weird seeing other people reacting to music, but you two made it very enjoyable. The guy on the left with that cut jaw line and the woman on the right... you guys make me jealous, haha. Very enjoyable experience here!
Once again, Lex shows that she is the one with the ear for music, she's the one with soul. I "got" her comparison to leather right away, Brad has no clue.
They described their dominant senses. Lex said it sounds like a leather moccasin. She has associated sounds with things before. She is a visual person. Brad seems to relate better to taste. It’s not weird. I like how when the beat kicked in at the beginning and Lex looked over at Brad and he was smiling from ear to ear. She did a double take and started grooving. These two are like peas and carrots!!
I was at their last show together in Louisville.. amazing show.. you could see Dusty was hurting, but he was a trooper and performing brilliantly.. just not as much footwork and dancing about as the other concerts of their from over the years.. 70+ years old and still rockin hard... RIP Dusty.. Heaven just got a bit more of the Rhythm & Blues
The way lex describes music is off the wall, yet totally relatable. Once she described Deftones as "drippy" I was on board. Always felt it, just didn't know how to put it into words. Lol . Love your reactions.
When it come to ZZ TOP, I've listened to my fair share, Being from Houston,Texas we listen to a lot of ZZ TOP. Great band and their music is just a Southern Thing. This is a great song, La Grange is my favorite ZZ TOP song and then there is Tush.
You guys are so much fun and I love that you keep the videos short and sweet. "Leather moccasins" Ok, let's go with that, lot's of good song to check out from ZZ. Since I am new here I am going to binge on your videos for the next couple days. Thank you both. 👍
Lex... I get you. You really feel the music through your whole body. Like you naturally break down each instrument and feel it. There's people who just listen and like songs they hear, then there are those that really feel it like you. Its a different level.
Right on the money! Billy's vocals are slow, funky & smooth with ruff textured accents, comfortable like a pair of old leather moccasins to your soul. You guy's will love their other classics like 'Jesus just left Chicago' or really anything else you'd pick out. These guy's didn't rock anything without Texas funk & southern soul in it. RIP Dusty 🙏 thanks for the many concerts, decades of great music filled with gritty Texas soul.
Saw ZZ live in ‘75. They were the last band..right after Aerosmith….in Old Three Rivers stadium in Pittsburgh PA….all day show…stepped on an m80 walking to the can…yeah it exploded 😂
They only have one guitar, one bass and one drummer. The "background" music IS rhythm guitar. THIS is is referred to as the melody. The "high pitched" notes you refer to is lead guitar. Lead guitar progressions are also known as "riffs" or "licks". Most bands have two 6 stings guitar players. One for rhythm, one for lead. Billy Gibbons plays both rhythm & lead without dubbing in the studio. They can (could) play everything on an album live in concert. They were the biggest little 3 member band in the world. Ironic side note: The only member without a beard is the drummer. His name is Frank Beard.
Great break down explanation. I'm not sure they will get the just of it all and realize how hard it is to sound this full and good with only a 3 piece band. Only those who have tried it, really understand how much talent the guitarist has to have. Bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Rush etc.
When I was a kid, I went 2 or 3 ZZ Top concerts. I remember going to Tulane Stadium on their World Wide Texas Tour and one in Mobile Alabama and after both concerts it was like I had ear plugs in my ears. Everything was muffled for about an hour after the concert. IT WAS SO LOUD! But, they played La Grange at both concerts. It was awesome.
This world needs a lot more Brad & Lex'. Y'all definitely give a knucklehead like me much hope. I saw ZZ Top the first time 15 years old, 38 years ago, eliminator tour d town Tejas! ZZ Hill opened for them- Native Dallas Tx Blues in the 60's 70's
I like how right before the ending solo when the drums come back in, you can hear Frank Beard lightly hit the snare as he was going to come in at that point but changed his mind, but the entry was so good that they left it in the final mix. I love when it wasn't so easy to edit music. It had so much more humanity to it. Once Protools took over, you could construct a piece of music that sounds so perfect that it's monotonous. The human nuances of music is why everyone, such as yourselves, reacts to older music, before it was produced in a factory.
Yes Lex he DOES have what is known as a "leathery" voice . You are correct . I can't wait for you to check out some of their other songs like Legs , Sharp Dressed Man , Tush , Tube Snake Boogie , Give Me All Your Lovin' , Rough Boy , Got Me Under Pressure , T.V. Dinners , Velcro Fly and Pearl Necklace .
You just named every ZZ Top song that most true ZZ Top fans would consider as crap. I mean their bad shit was better than everyone else's so called good music. Skip ALL of those suggestions. Listen to their older, quality music. 1) I Thank You; 2) Fool for Your Stockings; 3) Blue Jean Blues; 4) My Head's in Mississippi; 5)Tush; 6) Waitin on the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago; 7) I'm Bad I'm Nationwide; 8) Just Got Paid .Skip the 80's crapola that they had to do to survive that ridiculous Era. RIP Dusty Hill.
Fun fact: Billy Gibons wanted to get a different sound on this song so he ran around the recording studio 3 times in the snow and came back and started record
The story behind the song La Grange ... the most famous brothel ever (in Texas). It was in business for over 100 years, people from even south of the border and Canada and Washington DC would go there .... A magazine issued reveals the history of the brothel and they promised to include a follow up story in a future issue that would include the list of names of known clients. The federal government finally shut the brothel down and no other articles was written about the Ranch.
Yes, this was the Infamous Chicken Ranch in LaGrange, Texas. The FEDS didn't NOT shut it down, an asshole newsman from Houston, MARVIN ZINDLER, made a show about the A&M and Longhorn football players each year. After many years of back and forth, the sheriff had to have it shut down.
@@mkelly1347 Correct. It was state officials after Zindler's report. This is the topic of the musical movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" with Dolly Parton.
@@mkelly1347 Marvin was quite a character himself. I was in college in Houston when this all went down. He was a consumer "reporter" for one the local TV stations and had developed a pretty big following himself. He brought a lot of attention to the Ranch by reporting on it. That forced the authorities to shut the Ranch down. I think they used unreported/unpaid tax as the supposed reason. Mostly it was the pols and they're offspring going there and not wanting to become part of the story.
The Chicken Ranch has reopened in Nevada and is still in operation today, though I don't know if it has any direct connection to the former brothel in Texas.
I can't believe through all the comments I've read. No one person I saw mentioned their greatest song ever( Cheap Sunglasses)! Best riffed song and lead guitar solo with so much soul! You guys will love it!
The song is actually about going to visit the place that inspired the comedy movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." And that's one of the great guitar riffs ever.
There's an amazing documentary called "That little ol' band from Texas" that's all about the band from the very start to modern day, made before Rusty Hill passed away. It's very good and has tons of hilarious anecdotes (like the time early in their career when they got invited to a blues festival and everyone there was surprised to find out they were white). Edit: Also, using visuals to describe voices has been a thing for a loooong time, so Lex is absolutely right. People often say things like "He/she's got a voice like gravel" or "voice like wet seaweed" (one I heard a long time ago about a male singer who tended to swallow the consonant sounds when singing). Sometimes it's half of a metaphor like "rusty nails (on chalkboard)".
If you want more ZZ Top, go for "Sharp Dressed Man"; If you want something similar to this, then try George Thorogood: "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."
In this track they dubbed in a rhythm guitar for the solos. So this sounds bigger than it would do without the over dubbed rhythm guitar. They probably did that for many of their other tracks too.
R.I.P. Dusty Hill. You guys need to check out "Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" if you want some more vocals. That's the essential ZZ Top. And just so you guys know prior to Dusty's passing ZZ Top was the longest active band in history. They've been at it since the 60's.
@@davidickes4621 Never claimed that. I replied just to "longest active band in history". But they did have the same 4 core members since 1970, with some temporary additions along the way.

@@garretisla5282 not to mention one of the best ever rock drummers and most underappreciated guitar players of all time...
@@frostymugger95 for sure! They had great composition as musicians!
You will love them
Once again, Lex shows that she is the one with the ear for music, she's the one with soul. I "got" her comparison to leather right away, Brad has no clue.
! Like leather boots "croke" like a frog
Unless it's all part of the act, Brad is clueless.
Bro, Brad is the the more linier, logical thinker.... Lex is the creative. Neither are wrong, both are necessary, and complimentary.
@@smashleyscott8272 That's pretty much what I said. You just said it nicer. :)
Oh he has! She’s just more… sensual?
They described their dominant senses. Lex said it sounds like a leather moccasin. She has associated sounds with things before. She is a visual person. Brad seems to relate better to taste. It’s not weird.
I like how when the beat kicked in at the beginning and Lex looked over at Brad and he was smiling from ear to ear. She did a double take and started grooving. These two are like peas and carrots!!
Waitin' For the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago are among my favorite ZZ Top songs.
Lex: I had a pair of moccasins that sounded like this.
*She explains
Brad: Nobody knows what you mean.
Me: Absolutely I do.
Lex & I: Soul sistas!
🤘✌️
Hahahaha yes! 😂😂❤️
@@BradAndLex Hey Lex, that kind of voice is sometimes said to have some "vanilla grits". Lowell George from Little Feat has 'em for sure!
Excellent -- perhaps you can explain it to me!!! :-)
Lex explaining things to Brad is like describing the smell of the colour nine to a fish in a tree.
I like Lex side-eying Brad while she says "I like really weird stuff."
I know exactly what you mean about the sound of leather moccasin’s Lex.
Me too. I would actually think most people would but what do I know, haha!
Me too! Our brains must work in a particular way!
Lex has it right!
The incredible amount of cuteness Lex continues to show is sooooo lovable! She could understand Duran Duran's "Smell like a sound" lyric. lol
Saw ZZ live in ‘75. They were the last band..right after Aerosmith….in Old Three Rivers stadium in Pittsburgh PA….all day show…stepped on an m80 walking to the can…yeah it exploded 😂
That trio has been playing together for 50 years according to ZZ Top on the Netflix documentary. That voice was unique to this song.
There is actually a rhythm track on this, the studio version, though.
It's a double track guitar part man. No one can play a solo and rhythm track at the same time with only one set of arms 😂
It was such a great show ... all of them
Don’t you ever lose her young man!!! 😂 She’s definitely one of a kind. She’s perfect!😂😂😂 God bless
The human nuances of music is why everyone, such as yourselves, reacts to older music, before it was produced in a factory.
spot on with the leather analogy....ZZ has that second skin feel
Yes Lex he DOES have what is known as a "leathery" voice . You are correct . I can't wait for you to check out some of their other songs like Legs , Sharp Dressed Man , Tush , Tube Snake Boogie , Give Me All Your Lovin' , Rough Boy , Got Me Under Pressure , T.V. Dinners , Velcro Fly and Pearl Necklace .
And don't forget Just Got Paid. True legends...for their beards and clothing choices as well as their music.
1 guitar, all blues.... Yo Billy! \m/
Fun fact: Billy Gibons wanted to get a different sound on this song so he ran around the recording studio 3 times in the snow and came back and started record
I hope Lex NEVER runs out of great music to discover
His voice is “leathery” in this song for sure
LEx! That's the best description EVER! Riff's are their thing. Check out "You got me under pressure" It's one of my favorites in the car.
Caught these guys live back in the late 80's have never seen so many bikers. Top concert and top night. Good review by the way
I would agree the “leather” reference.
I can relate!!
The dude on the left - he always looks like he’s lost!!!!
I think Uniqueness is definitely what set ZZ Top and AC/DC apart
I love Lexs interpretation and reactions ...lol She is soooo cute!
The brothel's name was The Chicken Ranch.
Lex's description is so creative and detailed. Awesome. Lex's world is a wonderland of joy!
Brad you’re so lucky to have her. She’s an angel 😁🤙
All their stuff before the Eliminator album is the best.
I completely understand her!😂😂😂😂
The song is actually about going to visit the place that inspired the comedy movie "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." And that's one of the great guitar riffs ever.
A great slow blues ZZ Top tune is “ Blue Jean Blues” . It’s a live early recording from a show in a small venue in New Orleans. Essential ZZ Top!
Lex has a fascinating mind -- when she explains I always get it
There's an amazing documentary called "That little ol' band from Texas" that's all about the band from the very start to modern day, made before Rusty Hill passed away.
If you want more ZZ Top, go for "Sharp Dressed Man";
If you want something similar to this, then try George Thorogood: "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."
Great selections
Both terrific recommendations.
One of the greatest guitar riffs ever. Simple and just so unique by the rhythm. First 4 tones and you know the song.
The first concert I went to, 1975. Seen these guys 5 times over the decades and they were always fun. Last time was 2019 with my son. He loved them.
There’s no other band that could make such a big sound with just one guitar, a bass, and drums
Rush definitely takes the cake
Not to argue but Brownsville Station was pretty good.
In this track they dubbed in a rhythm guitar for the solos. So this sounds bigger than it would do without the over dubbed rhythm guitar. They probably did that for many of their other tracks too.
The Rev. Horton Heat would like a word.
Motörhead. But nah, zz top > all.
R.I.P. Dusty Hill. You guys need to check out "Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" if you want some more vocals. That's the essential ZZ Top. And just so you guys know prior to Dusty's passing ZZ Top was the longest active band in history. They've been at it since the 60's.
And the longest in history with the same lineup the entire time. The same 3 guys the whole 50 plus years. Amazing.
Golden Earring has been around since 1969. 1961 if you ignore the name changes from The Golden Earrings and Golden Earrings.
@@nielsdegroot9138 the same line up the entire time? With no break ups, like going on their own for separate albums? Not sure that's true.
@@davidickes4621 Never claimed that. I replied just to "longest active band in history". But they did have the same 4 core members since 1970, with some temporary additions along the way.
You guys should react to their other hits like…
Gimme All Your Lovin'
Sharp Dressed Man
Legs
Tush
Got Me Under Pressure
I Gotsta Get Paid
Rough Boy
Pearl Necklace

Lex, I just LOVE your metaphors (like the moccasin one). Don't ever change.
ZZ Top first time I saw them live in 1977 they were sooo loud, my ears are still ringing!
