BOSH! A350 HARD LANDING 😮

- CX239 from Hong Kong smokes the mains on Rwy 27L during crosswinds at London Heathrow.
Watch as the opposite inertia kicks the 230 tonne flying machine all over the place. A real battle between pilot and machine to get that thing straightened up with the rudder - Pilot won it 💪🏻
The direction that thing was facing once they’d caught it, I seriously thought they would Go-Around.
Pilots were saying after the show, and I completely understand, that ‘this footage doesn’t replicate the turbulence we experience in the last 2 miles of approach’.
I’ve been a passenger during strong winds on approach. Seeing the wing flexing and the flight surfaces going crazy, I imagine the pilots up-front in complete calm: Aircraft crabbing, NFP calling-out the numbers, picking their moment to go manual, one hand on the Thrust Levers, expecting those last-second gusts.
Even during a landing like this, you’d be surprised to see just how calm the pilots are when it’s all going-on
Get involved ✍️
The landing gear on aircraft is unbelievable.. has to deal with so many stresses .. shows how good the engineering is.
I work at Safran in gloucester where they maufacture, assemble the parts for the A350,A330 and A320 undercarrages the main landing gear and it really amazes me how the parts are made and the assembling of them, they don't look much so withstand the hammering that some pilots put it through but it's a amazing to see.
@@AndyPoyser but A330 gears are made of chocolate 😜
That’s for sure. Some of you must have flown in the A-350. Is it as nice as the 777 or the Dreamliner?

The landing gear is one of those things on a plane which is guaranteed to fail in use, so it's life-limited. It typically gets pulled for overhaul after around 8 years/25k cycles, then is scrapped after its 3rd run. Each landing costs around $100 in landing-gear maintenance costs.
Give the pilot credit ,looks like it was under control even keeping front undercarriage up until it was lined up ,brilliant work from Jerry and Gilly 😊🎉
True. Very skilled and ballsy seeing it through instead of go arounding.
Shout out to the engineers that designed and built that landing gear.
That was replicated on nearly every landing over the weekend, very exciting cos of the crosswinds. A massive big up and well done to all the pilots, the streams over the weekend was a testament to your skill and calmness under adverse conditions 👏👏👏😎. Great stuff, and a fantastic stream Jerry, spot on mate. 👍👌👏👏👏👏
The force on that rear left landing gear on touchdown must've been absolutely insane, amazing how it didn't collapse!
Wow, brilliant capture as always! Would you be okay with me featuring this in my series Weekly Dose of Aviation? Of course you will be credited both in the video and in the description as before.
Absolutely, no problem :)
Great stuff Jerry and Gilly. I was watching this live with you yesterday and Saturday. Big Jet TV two days in a row!! Thanks!
Great footage as always here Jerry, and again what a great stream this was (thanks to gilly for helping sort out the tech erros) i look foward to wednesday in Tolouse
Footage of the passenger reactions to that landing would be super awesome!! If that were my very first flight it would probably be my last....lol
Thanks for the amazing shot as usual Jerry and Gilly. This was a wild one! love Jerry's commentary in the background....truly Jerry-esk. Very cool watching it back in 50%, or 25% speed. At those speeds Jerry's commentary is even more of a laugh. Thanks once again BigJetTV, and cheers from California.
Do you guys like the British accents and slang words I’m curious 😊
I decided to watch the landing again at 0.25x and it's very funny, I agree 😂 thanks for the laugh
You are most welcome! Really glad you enjoyed it too😀@@rachelppython
Wow that was crazy to see again!! Was just rewatching the weekend shows!
Jesus 😮 That was hard stuff but in the end well done
Nicely recovered. Looked like wind shear right at the TDZ
Insane landing. Great video
These landing gear struts, blimey they take a beating!
i wonder if they have to do an extensive look see, going over after a landing like that.. looks like it could be pretty stressful on the landing gear. maybe wings too? 🤔
@@somejackballthey do. If your landing exceeds a certain rate of fpm (can't remember how much), the plane has to go in for a check/maintenance
That was one of the roughest landings I've ever seen, can only imagine how it felt onboard. It looks as though there was a downward pressure of wind just a few seconds before landing that the pilot was unable to avoid. I'm amazed the landing gear is able to withstand that.
It's specifically made and tested to withstand that.
Looks like he hit a pocket of “dead air” or a small down draft. I’m sure Ryan Air will be offering that pilot a job. Lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dead air ? Is that what they call it ?
Jokes aside Ryanair upped their game been on a flight recently and it was butter
oh dead air is it ? is that the term ? maybe go back to microsoft flight sim 2020
Been flying with Ryanair a lot, I only experienced a hard touchdown once or twice. It's more of an urban myth IMHO
Great filming Gerry , so good I’m going to become a full member
Now that's a landing Bosh we'll done to the pilot for getting that one down well caught Jerry.
Great engineering and good looking plane too.
That gear set might need an early service now.
TBH, by then, it had already happened. Therefore, it was less risky to continue with the landing. I'm glad they did it safely.
Well said…
Having been in the jump seat for more than one of those, I guarantee that there was at least one and probably more four letter words uttered (ok shouted) that would likely violate “BIG JET TV” comment rules.
I suspect that are not many that don’t know the words to which I refer, therefore there is no need to utter them.
One thing about pilots…for the 999 times that they have an uneventful landing, they get paid to get the one that isn’t normal right. “Right” in this context is no broken plane, no broken people.
Mission accomplished!
That was definitely spicy.
On second thoughts, instead of Windshear, could the Pilot have rounded off a bit to early in flare procedure and thus the sudden drop - having reduced power in flare process ?
Best example of sudden windshear!
Jesus!! That's a really risky landing Jeremy 😳😥😅✈️
OMG 😳 Great job
Frozen buttery landing that one!
The fact the pilot kept the nose up deserves a pint.If he/ she had let the nose gear down a few seconds earlier there would have been a big incident.Everthing seemed stable right until the last few feet.Amazing skills .
Keeping the nose up on a swept wing jet is not what you want to do, just increases the risk of a tail strike. Nose should have been brought down a lot sooner.
Oh my god 😳 The stress on that landing gear must have been incredible. You can see the pilot pulling pitch to no avail. Nasty, nasty conditions. Love the comments. Definitely gnarly man! 😂
Superb picture
The pilot should have saved that for an airshow display
Unbelievable 😮
It all looked smooth on the approach and then its like he hits a dead spot in the air and the aircraft just drops and slams into the runway. Luckily LHR has long runways so he was able to correct his alignment and slowdown without having to go around again.
Yeah I've been in a Cessna flying around the NZ alps when the plane just dropped like a stone for a second. Very scary and there's no way to pick it coming.
Now that is a big boy ballsy landing ..fantastic
saw it on your live that was crazy 😂
Ryanair wants to hire the Pilot
That is some good windsheer at the end.
Hi there, cool catch! I was wondering if I could feature this video on my Weekly Aviation Update series? Of course, you’ll be credited in the video and description. Happy spotting! ✈️
Amazing
Pleased I wasn’t on that, what a clip,thank you
Is there something on the A350 which causes this? You’ve had a couple of catches the same, like the Virgin one before… slams down on the deck… ideas?
Long flight from HK?
The starboard engine was heading for a strike, Jerry. Flippin' ek!😁😁
Incredible
The bottom fell out on that one.. Good catch!
WOW, indeed! 😳😮
watched this on live oh my it was not good
Ohhhhh, that was bonkers!
pilots are a on a different level, anyone else would have at the very least lost their cool and focus
When is the next live ? Jerry and very crazy landing 🛬 😮❤
Flipping Heck!!!!!
Amazing capture ! Would you mind if I use part of this video , in one of my next episodes?Of course with a link back to your original video. Peace!
Of course, that's fine :)
i love ur reactions xD
That is awesome, though feel for passengers at the back!
That was crazy! 🤯
The passengers got little bit of fun for the money 😊
Real men don’t touch and go, real men touch and park 0:43
Amazing video. Can I feature this horror landing in one of my next episodes? Of course, with a link to his original video. Cheers!
Yes, of course 👍🏻
That was epic
Unbelievable jeff
Your commentary is hilarious 🤣
Cant tell if there was a strong crosswind component leading to some crabbing there?
what a BEAAAAAST and what a wheelie
That's was really hard😮
Why this video appear on other channels? Your channel is class .
Question, does a hard landing like that, initiate a particular inspection/test of the landing gear (LG) and/or any components of the LG?
A hard landing does. Whether this was a hard landing or not however can not be assessed by just looking at the video, we would need to know the actual g load at the centre of gravity during touchdown.
There are sensors which detect the g loading on the gear and above a certain amount then yes an inspection will be done.
Yup. Depends on the G force recorded at touchdown, over a certain amount requires a hard landing inspection.
Sensors to record the g-load, thus initiating a maintenance response does make sense. Thank you both for your responses 👍
It goes by the ouch factor from the passengers
😮 wow nice save 😅
That was crazy! He kept the nose up for a bit afterwards also.
That was rough lol passengers boking everywhere
That’s a true BOSH Jerry 🤣🤣 glad I was not on that one ✈️😁
probably a bit of bish and bash too - "easy-peasy - we're down!"
Looks like ground effect took the day off
Good wheeling
Still nailed it after what was clearly a wind shear right before touchdown.
It looks like the wind briefly changed directions and the aircraft lost lift for a sec.
The pilot tried and did the best that he could, i expected a go-around seeing how the aircraft got tipped over tho.
Holy cow!!!
I'll bet there was a few sore backsides after that landing. Ouch!
I don't see a problem. Looks pretty normal.
Never seen a landing like that before
More flare than Lionel Blair! 😂
That was unbelievable we’ll done to captain
“Oh my flippin’ 🥚!”
HECK, He said heck, not egg! *facebpalm*
The British Airways a350-1000 XWB and Ryanair’s brand new nemesis!! I wonder how they’ll react to that
Wow that's a super hard landing, scary. But hopefully the passenger is not injured when the plane touch down super hard.
😮That was a Legendary Wheelie of a a350 😮
Ouch!!!
That's what happens when you put a 200 hour Cherokee pilot in the right seat of an airliner.
Someone knows why they kept the nose up for such a long time after the landing? Is this a kind of procedure or where they focused to stay on the centerline?
Its poor technique by the pilot, smaller single and twin-engine aircraft its ok, but in a big heavy jet you de-rotate and “fly” the nosewheel on to the runway. You want to kill as much lift as possible and get more weight on the wheels to assist with braking.
I am sure i read somewhere that when landing in heavy crosswinds the pilots have to land hard once they commit to reduce the rise of being blown sideways. Not sure if that is true?
Pilot on the phone to quick fit , what’s your biggest tyres you stock mate .
Sudden Wind shear ?
Wow
What was the airline btw please?
I couldn’t see.
Cathay perhaps ?
It’s Cathay Pacific
Thanks
Bloody norah😮
I had a similar experience recently on Qatar's A350 Dash 9. Doha to Bangkok
Real heavy landing in decent weather. A Question if I may,
is it just small windshear or does the A350 have an issue with heavy landings lol
You are lucky it was an A350 lol if it was an older plane you would've felt it, bad landings are pilots fault unless there is bad weather and they dont have other choice like in this video even tho a go around was a possibility.
I've seen this exact situation more than once with the A350. Maybe the computer calculate the wrong approach speeds. Or the pilots enter incorrect data into the MCDU. Or both? It's almost like it enter a stall at the very critical phase of the landing.
When the wind is bad up at leeds/bradford airport thats a pretty standard landing!
He really started to sink just as he crossed the threshold wind shear is crazy
Wow, great filming! May I feature this in a video of mine? You will be credited of course in the description and video.
Yes of course!
Oh god😮
Hi from Atlanta GA USA
😮
