Johnny is legendary, but he was just a man and he knew it. I met him in 07. He had a gig at the Old Polk Theater in Lakeland Fl. After the show, a friend and I went to a little Blues Cafe, just up the street. In walked Johnny, alone and like he was just a local. He came over with his drink and asked if we would mind sharing the table. The next thing I knew, I was jamming with him and he was signing my strat! My moment of GLORY and a memory I'll take to my grave, with a smile.
You were so lucky to have had a drink with him. What a legend , and just a man with an extraordinary talent for playing guitar. I saw him 5 or 6 times , from 1970's to 2005 . He's my all time favorite.

The day before, a radio station was touting how great it was, that he was on the wagon, and had quit drinking ! Johnny was more than a bluestringer. He played mandolin, drums, harp, bass ...who knows what else. He was also very intelligent. I had the pleasure of hangin with him several times. He was generous with his time and knowledge. A truly good guy. I miss him.

Johnny Winters is a true phenomenon of electric blues!!! No one ever had surpassed him!!! I saw him many times in Detroit in the 1970's n to this day I still listen to his albums, especially Still Alive N Well n Saints N Sinners, which I grew up on and are part of me to this day!!! He was a great electric blues, rock, blues, guitar player, song writer, singer n showman!!!! I was a dancer for years in Detroit n I used his albums for my dancing sets!!!! RIP, Johnny, you are part of my musical soul!!!
Saw him play at an obscure venue in London in 68 or 69. He had so much energy and pranced about the stage with that long flowing white hair. Fell in love with fingerslide that night.
I saw Johnny several times, the first at a Fort Lauderdale Blues Festival, he was with Tommy Shannon. I saw hplay up close and realized he was using a three finger pick style like you play banjo. I was stunned. He had such speed and accuracy and was one of the best slide players at the time. Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Dickie Betts, Johnny Winter were the best white blues sidemen for decades. Though Johnny is gone, I heard him on a radio program live from Chicago Blues Festival years ago and his slide playing haunted me for years from that show. Real soul, real style and lightning speed or slow blues he never let you down especially on any solo. Johnny will be missed at the top of the list. His brother Edgar is an incredibly talented musician who played rock, jazz, blues and his ability was also staggering in so many styles. Long live Johnny.

Johnny's got the slide hanging off his pinky , but such amazing control. Even with the slide angled , flopping around, it always sounds spot on . He must have had a fantastic ear , for not even looking at the guitar
No, the thing was, the angle of the slide favored the treble strings at the twelfth fret, so...they went slightly sharp. It is not sloppy or floppy at all!

Don't know if you know this but my brother bought pre-sale tickets got 3rd row seats, but they changed the show to the pit first come, first let in. We got there late and they said they were full. We paid extra to stand for 11 hours. My feet were killing me on the drive back home.
Only got to see him once. My hubby was I'll- I said just one song at least. After which my old man told me I'm. Staying! It was a killer show! Will always love him!
So glad I got to see this legend play live about a year before he passed. At the time, he was quite frail and and to be helped to the stage. But once he sat down and started playing, he unleashed the fury!
I was so fortunate to see Johnny perform a month before he passed... what a talent! His style was so unique. His albums, and those with Muddy Waters, are on constant rotation in my music library... along with Jimi H., ABB, Gov't Mule, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, and a little Joe Bonamassa. Still gets these 64 year old feet tapping.
I saw Johnny perform at my high school gymnasium when I was a sophomore, in 1969. His first Columbia LP was just out. An awesome show. I was just a 15 year old kid, I had no idea that he would become the legend he is now, but I did know then that he was something special.
My uncle owned a limousine company in New Orleans and I would drive on special occasions or in between oil company jobs. I think the last super bowl in New Orleans I picked up Derek trucks and his wife who did an album together I knew his uncle and the Allman Brothers fairly well as security at the warehouse in New Orleans where my guys I got in for free, and they always sold the Allman Brothers their cocaine and heroin as these guys were merchant marines. But Derek has played with everybody now, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy who he played with quite a bit and his jaw was down and he had a big smile when he played with him also. He's an incredible guitar player coming from his family and then really seasoned with the Old pros. He was so humble he and his wife. They gave me their latest CD and it was great because his wife could sing and play guitar. He's probably the newest talent around right now and one of the last rock and roll and Blues guitarist, God bless him and keep him as I believe he learned to stay away from the drugs after watching his uncle and the Allman Brothers. In one show they would do an ounce of cocaine and a bundle of heroin. Speedballing all the way there. I don't know how they stayed alive but I did the same thing so I'm a walking miracle at I was able to stop at 30 and surrender and say Jesus where are you I went out in the woods for 4 months with a Bible because I did not want to play religion. I can tell you my life has never been the same. But I still like my old blues and rock and roll and I don't play with the churches only study the Bible for 39 years and try to live by it. God is pretty good when you can stay awake for 4 days sleep one and go back out for four more for 8 months and he kept me alive but at that point I was at the end of my rope. I surrendered and any of my friends that did not are all dead. I should be I OD'd 10 or 15 times but came back between God looking out and the fact that I was a swimmer in high school and college but without God I'd be six feet under and burning in hell

Absolutely fenominal!!, I am so greatful to have seen him play live here in Houston Texas so many times, and just missed him having my friend Kevin Karapata who knew him personally, he would visit him often when he came to town , say to me Jonny was here!!, But I did get to jam with his drummer, Uncle John he was so down to earth and cool!!,
No other blue's player sounds like Johnny winter a voice that was made for the blue's and a playing talent that was the best accompaniment that could possibly be Johnny his voice a slide and a firebird a combination that will never be matched and I believe everybody knows it. First saw this man at a Christmas concert in Denver in 1969. He was one of the backup bands for Fleetwood Mac. I had just gotten out of the US Army 3 months before and It was the first concert I ever went to. Awesome performance!
Seen Johnny so many times I can't remember. Day on the green in Oakland in 77 he headlined 6 bands. Skynard was third. Deringer Edgar then Johnny. With all three on stage for the encore. Last I saw him 2004 in Modesto in a small theater. Took my son and he tripped. Love Mr Winter...RIP JOHNNY

I was so fortunate to see Johnny perform a month before he passed... what a talent! His style was so unique. His albums, and those with Muddy Waters, are on constant rotation in my music library... along with Jimi H., ABB, Gov't Mule, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, and a little Joe Bonamassa. Still gets these 64 year old feet tapping.
NOBODY did blues slide like Johnny. NOBODY....
I saw Johnny perform at my high school gymnasium when I was a sophomore, in 1969. His first Columbia LP was just out. An awesome show. I was just a 15 year old kid, I had no idea that he would become the legend he is now, but I did know then that he was something special.
I still got that lp. .
Johnny Winter is missed. I love how Derek Trucks seems so happy to play with him.

My uncle owned a limousine company in New Orleans and I would drive on special occasions or in between oil company jobs. I think the last super bowl in New Orleans I picked up Derek trucks and his wife who did an album together I knew his uncle and the Allman Brothers fairly well as security at the warehouse in New Orleans where my guys I got in for free, and they always sold the Allman Brothers their cocaine and heroin as these guys were merchant marines. But Derek has played with everybody now, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy who he played with quite a bit and his jaw was down and he had a big smile when he played with him also. He's an incredible guitar player coming from his family and then really seasoned with the Old pros. He was so humble he and his wife. They gave me their latest CD and it was great because his wife could sing and play guitar. He's probably the newest talent around right now and one of the last rock and roll and Blues guitarist, God bless him and keep him as I believe he learned to stay away from the drugs after watching his uncle and the Allman Brothers. In one show they would do an ounce of cocaine and a bundle of heroin. Speedballing all the way there. I don't know how they stayed alive but I did the same thing so I'm a walking miracle at I was able to stop at 30 and surrender and say Jesus where are you I went out in the woods for 4 months with a Bible because I did not want to play religion. I can tell you my life has never been the same. But I still like my old blues and rock and roll and I don't play with the churches only study the Bible for 39 years and try to live by it. God is pretty good when you can stay awake for 4 days sleep one and go back out for four more for 8 months and he kept me alive but at that point I was at the end of my rope. I surrendered and any of my friends that did not are all dead. I should be I OD'd 10 or 15 times but came back between God looking out and the fact that I was a swimmer in high school and college but without God I'd be six feet under and burning in hell

That tone... so dirty and expressive! I watched this over 10 years ago and couldn´t get over the tone of his Firebird... i come back once in a while just to check if the sound in my head gets it right!

In the 60's anytime there was a huge concert Johnny was always the opening act. Unlike nowadays, everyone listened and rocked with Johnny.

Absolutely fenominal!!, I am so greatful to have seen him play live here in Houston Texas so many times, and just missed him having my friend Kevin Karapata who knew him personally, he would visit him often when he came to town , say to me Jonny was here!!, But I did get to jam with his drummer, Uncle John he was so down to earth and cool!!,
No other blue's player sounds like Johnny winter a voice that was made for the blue's and a playing talent that was the best accompaniment that could possibly be Johnny his voice a slide and a firebird a combination that will never be matched and I believe everybody knows it. R.i.P. Mr. Johnny Winter no other blue's player or singer will.ever even come close.

Started to play guitar in the early seventies and watching Johnny Winters play live inspired me greatly. Thanks for the memories.
First saw this man at a Christmas concert in Denver in 1969. He was one of the backup bands for Fleetwood Mac. I had just gotten out of the US Army 3 months before and It was the first concert I ever went to. Awesome performance!
I watched Mr Winter in Madrid in 1988 in a dusty and old futbol stadium, full of people, I will never forget.

Seen Johnny so many times I can't remember. Day on the green in Oakland in 77 he headlined 6 bands. Skynard was third. Deringer Edgar then Johnny. With all three on stage for the encore. Last I saw him 2004 in Modesto in a small theater. Took my son and he tripped. Love Mr Winter...RIP JOHNNY
