Homemade powerhammers are the beasts! I have built one, completely different to yours as a helve hammer using a truck leaf spring as the fulcrum, its a vertical hammer deadweight around 160 pounds so will crush anything!

An old railroad or mining trolley wheel makes a great base for a power hammer: they can often be found at scrap metal merchants. You can get them any weight from about 200 to 600 pounds.

This was an awesome video! If you don’t mind me asking, about how much in material costs did you have tied up in this?

Honestly I can’t remember but the main tube and the anvil are the most expensive single pieces, depending where you look around might be able to find some good deals on off cuts.

wow, beautiful and neat .. I want to know, if I want to do this mission as well .. how big the engine should I buy, or maybe how big the horsepower for the engine

It is definitely a big undertaking, took me about three months everyday putting in a few hours to a full days work, Clay Spencer’s plans cover everything and this is designed beautifully and is only drive by a 1 hp motor due to the design, definitely worth the $30 for the plans if you end up making a power hammer

    Hi Avery
Just found your awesome informative video.
    Well done!
I have one question if you don't mind, how did you work out the wheel counter weight?
I'm building a hammer at the moment but it's not a Clay Spencer design but mechanically
    Same principles.
Was there some sort of formula or trial and error method?
    Cheers dude.
    Nz down under.

honestly, this was my first hammer build, and I was going to make my own initially however once it came down to getting the stroke length, ram weight, axle offset distance, and counterweight I drew the line for myself of far too advanced math for me then and quite frankly now too, in the future id definitely like to learn but still above me for now, sorry I cant be of more help, do keep me updated how your hammer goes and message me if you figure it out id love to learn how!

      Thanks for your reply Avery.
      Sweet as mate!
Look, I wouldn’t stress too much about the math, your hammer works!, no major vibrations happening?
If that’s all good then hey! You’ve got it right for you. Sure you can fine tune for optimal strike weight but most of the time we just need a mechanical hammer that saves the smith from wearing out. Unfortunately I’m passed that stage so a bit more urgent 😳
      Thanks Avery
      Will keep in touch.

Where did you get the 70lb version. My plans only list the 50 Lb ram. I'm going to be starting this soon. I am just about finished with my press. My Blacksmithing Knife making channel is Gas Point Knives

muddyudders this hammer took me about 3 months of working on it everyday one way or another, and this was while still in school and working at a job but it definitely takes a lot of planning and figuring out

What is part #20 1/8"x3/4"x2" 1" long. Too many dimensions for my little brain to figure out. Is it the pieces of angle at 2:18 in the video

    • @AveryRoth
      @AveryRoth  4 роки тому +1

muddyudders you need 2@2” and 2@1”. I changed that up because of stuff I already had around but it’s just to hold the guides in place
