- This video will give you a good overview of what to expect from a well-run tire hammer build class. In this particular class 32 Hammers were built in 2.5 days. These hammers have 70lb rams, 1.5hp motors and 515lb anvils. This Clay Spencer Tire hammer workshop was held in October 2020 at the Chappapeela Crafts School in Robert, Louisiana. All parts for the hammers were supplied by Curtis Herrmann from Oklahoma. For info on future classes at this location please visit www.chappapeelacrafts.com/
For more information on these tire hammers, check out the Tire Hammer page on my website at www.derekmelton.com/ and Clay Spencer's page tirehammer.org/tirehammer_webs...

To the guy with the artificial legs. I get mine soon, I just hope I can walk like you. I need to get back to my shop. This looked like amazing fun.
He sure wasn't slowed a bit. That guy was gettin' after it! Good luck with your legs! We live in amazing times with great prosthetic tech getting better all the time.
hi just curious how it's going? it workdd out good ?
I see Clay has updated his hammer design. At our hammer build (2017) we poured melted led into the hammer instead of having a solid steel hammer. I think our hammers were rated at 70 lbs. The build I participated in was a 2 & 1/2 days also. However, several weeks prior, the steel was ordered and tons (literally) of it had to be cut to size for numerous different parts. I'm not complaining, its was fun but there is so much work that takes places before the build actually begins. Clay was there on the last day to fine tune each machine and give his okey okedoky. We each got an announcement poster advertising the build and I asked Clay to sign mine, which he graciously did. I had it laminated and it now hangs in my shop.
That’s awesome! I got to see Clay again recently at the Alabama forge meeting.
I can reply as I got the latest versions of the plan (to produce tire hammer in france). Solid hammer is for heavier hammer and requires larger anvil. Some other design points have changed but plans still contain the two versions.
My goodness... What I would give to have access to a class and finished product like this... Truly awesome school and effort by all. Well done.
Probably around $3000.00. That’s the last price I heard.
OMG that looks like a real vacation, making parts and building stuff. Love it!!!
40+ years as a pipefitter working with metals and I've never done anything that can be called blacksmithing, but it's always fascinated me. I'm really impressed.., and that's coming from someone nicknamed 'Inspector Gadget' because I'm always building stuff (gadgets) I'd give my pension to be younger and a part of this team!
I had no idea this was a thing. This is awesome on many levels. Smiths meeting other smiths, building something of value for your craft, getting an experience of seeing how something is actually built from raw materials.
Now, this is a class I would sign up for any day!!
WOW!!! What a great experience to be a part of!! And drive away with a ready to use mega tool!!
One of the coolest things I've seen in a long time.
A true vacation for the men (and mustn’t be forgetting the ladies too ), this looks brilliant, plus you get to be taking home a big gift for your efforts. Looks like there’s going to be a surge of folks signing up for this 🥤👍👍👍
Im curious as to how many of these guys didnt think ahead and dont have a truck nor anything at home to off load it. Just the post was over 500lbs. So you looking at 700 give or take all done. Guy driving the little compact tercel is like jeez I gotta rent a U Haul and a bloody forklift. OMG No a Crane I cant get into the back yard because of the privacy fence. It had to be true of at least one of them. A guy up in Va. Built this beautiful Cabin Catamaran. 4 years of building and when he was done. He neglected to realize. That not only did the whole front of his garage had to be taken apart. Due to the support structure Half of the front of his kitchen wall had to be taken down because of the solid laminated support beam. It cost him sooo much tear down and rebuild. Just to get it out of the house
Cool, I would have enjoyed that class. I'm a 76 year old retired carpenter and now live in a senior retirement apartment community in Petaluma CA. I don't think my neighbors would appreciate a new found joy of learning and using a tire hammer in this community. I'm not too keen on some aspects of social media but give credit where do like UA-cam opening up the world of craftsmanship and the "how to" to the DIY.
This is just amazing, two thumbs up for everyone involved. Great video thanks for documenting and sharing
That’s a really cool idea! Having everyone build their own hammers like that, sure save a lot on labor! Lol be safe with those boys! Cheers
Super cool idea bringing in the builders/ owners and making there own hammer learning from each other nothing better then that great job to all great video to watch. Well done everyone!!
WOW!!! That is awesome!!! I need to check into that class for sure!!
I've never heard of a tire hammer. Most interesting thing I've seen all month on UA-cam. It is where the rubber that meets the steel wheel that matter.
The tire hammer is a modern re-imagining of the original “Little Giant” blacksmiths power hammer. They work exceptionally well if they’re properly built!
I see a new kind of corporate-free , locally controlled, craft manufacturing economy. It can be applied to a lot of things, including materials processing. It will be needed in the near future.
I believe there are more blacksmiths active now than there have been in hundreds of years. Combine that with addiditve manufacturing and 3D printing, cnc production, etc. The sky is the limit.
2 bad no body wants to work as I have sense the day I grad from high school 1997 I've took 1 week off work sense then I can't get a person to work 1 week even paying them 1000 dollars for 40 hours Monday Friday it's fucking sad what this country has come to be !!!
And this is starting pay not years the first week of work
@@rickybailey7123 We had people of all ages at the build, they all worked their tails off.
@@rickybailey7123 What type of work do you do and in what area? I
Nice work! Really enjoyed watching.
Thanks!!
Clearly love such kind of coworker for the same goal and share good spirit, knowledge etc... Very very nice to see
Cheers from France 🇲🇫
Going to this years November class, it looks like it will be a fun time ! Thanks for the video.
See ya there.
Was very enjoyable group!!!
That class looked like a lot of fun and the hammers were amazing congratulations everyone👍👏
Awesome thinking.... awesome way of doing things , awesome unity in objectives and just a all around awesome thing to do ... Insperational stuff.
I'm attending the class this July and I can't wait!
Malcolm, how much the class/hammer costs. Thank you.
@@markspc1 $2500 for everything ( materials and instruction)
Молодцы ребята! Коллектив как семья 👪 хорошо поработали.
Спасибо! Семинар прошел очень весело!
you should bring this class over to the UK i guarantee you.d sell it out 10 times over
I agree but can you imagine what the neighbours are going to say when it starts pounding away!
@@theonlybuzz1969 Oi, you got a loicence fer dat!?
I was there the whole weekend and was totally amazed at the how every one worked together . John was a great host for this event. I got photos and video of it all.
Me 80 years old mine mechanic. Love to see the great work and crews.
This makes me really happy to know all these hammers are out there making stuff.
Give these men a BELLS! Going to use this video to make me one I think!
Magnifico progetto e ottimo sistema bravi
Great idea.
Heck I wonder what it would sound like when all 32 of the tyre hammers start working together.
LOL I was wondering the same thing. Missed opportunity if you ask me.
It would need over 300A of service
Wow! This is awesome. Good builders work together,It's interesting. On a massive scale.I wish you good success.👍
Great video. Have the plans and the parts to build one. Just need to make time now 😬👍✊
Any way you could send me a copy of these plans or a link to get them I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Thanks, mate
Fantastic ,shame we didn’t have a similar keen bunch of fellas in Australia ,I would be in it for one
great video
I was thinking the excess luggage bill to get one of them back here would be a bit rough. Trying to work out what that chunk of steel for the anvil would cost locally.
Great video
Extremely well organized. Nicely done!
Oil Valley Blacksmith Association built 23 Clay Spencer tire hammers, with Clay Spencer about 15 years ago. It took 3 of us a full month to do all the preparation work to make it possible to complete all those hammers in that two and a half days that Clay Spencer was there. We didn't have the video technology at the time.
I have been a Machinist for 44 years and built all kinds of machines I would love to take this class and build one of these but my problem is I live about 6 states away and hauling my completed hammer home is a bit of a chore great video
We had a guy come all the way from California with a Jeep and a UHaul. 😄
@@derekmelton good idea never thought of that possiblity just driving down and renting one at U-haul thanks
VERY COOL to see a bunch of independent craftsmen working together like that, just think how long it would take if each man had to build his own from scratch....
SUPER Brillante idée !!!
I watched this video from Brasil and I’m thinked this work amazing. Congratulation for all team.
Thank you
Lovely film 👍👍👍
Сколько же счастливых людей) Хорошо поработали!
Love it, stuck oin Ohio so wo t make it down for one. Would love to make the Nov class but alas too much at home to do.

63 yr old welder/fabricator here. I truly miss building stuff 🤕
Just bought me another Hobart Handler 140 mig welder... Just wish I had a place to set it up
Good job organizing a group of strangers and the preparation to do so.
muy buen video pero mejor realización de estos herreros colaborativos, con un final feliz donde cada uno obtiene su martinete, excelente ejemplo de cooperativismo. podrían mandar los planos para que podamos tener tambien nuestro martinete? gracias.
This is too cool!
See to me, this would almost be a vacation. Would love to do this when I have the room and demand to justify a power hammer.
What an awesome class. I would love to take a class that. How much does something like that cost?
NOW, HOW COOL IS THAT!!!
Very cool!
I'm from europe, but this kind of stuff is what makes me love american people

I don't because of stuff like this.
would have loved to join that class
Awesome
After assembly completion, those famous words that everyone enjoyed to hear,”Ok, now tear them down, got to paint them!” Never did figure out who said that, but spray Rustoleum was sold out at all local stores. Great vlog, thanks for sharing. What is typical cost of all parts at your location?
According to the website the entire class and build is $2985 That includes all parts as far as I can tell.
Awesome video!!!
Very cool!
So what does a class like this cost.
Does the cost of the class include getting a hammer.
If not how much more was the hammer?
$3000 this year
How do I sign up for one of these classes? I love doing this kinda stuff AND I really want/need a tire hammer!
Join the Clay Spencer tire hammer users group on Facebook
Are plans available for a home build as I doubt you do classes in the UK!
Love to join in with such a class!
wish there was something like this here in Australia
Dude, I want to go , I need to find out the when and where for sure
Does the wheel put much pressure on the motor shaft? Otherwise looks like a ripper few days. Wish we had something like this in Australia
Nope. Works great.
Great video what would the cost be on the hammer build classes ?
Usually around 2500. These hammers with the 70lb rams, 515lb anvils usually sell for 3600 or more, that was before steel prices went nuts.
@@derekmelton doesn't the class include everything to operate the hammer?
@@malcolmbuehler5619 I’m not sure what you are asking, at the end of the class you go home with a fully functional 70 pound tire Hammer.
@@derekmelton you said that the anvils cost $3600 and I thought you meant they were sold separately from the rest of the hammer as the class costs $2500
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Do you guys sell plans to build these?
Yes. $30 on his website
Had this same thought about using a tire to make a power hammer though I was just going to use the rim
Gotta say i envy every guy in the class. I'm too old to take advantage of this sort of thing now.
That was cool
Awesome community manufacturing.
hi there very interesting thanks john
Olá amigo, vc é fantástico sou do sul da Bahia Brasil
I see that the workshop RSVPs are closed, and I can't seem to find an option to buy one of these outright.... Could you please tell me how I can purchase one, and what the cost is?
Thank you!
Hey Marshal, the best way to find one of these when they go up for sale is probably to join the Clay Spencer Tire Hammer users group on FaceBook. You could also reach out to Curtis Herrmann (also on FB) He makes these to order. Occasionally, students from the class will sell their hammers just after the class for a profit. The class cost is around 2900 these days, a completed hammer is somewhere around 3800 I think now. Steel costs have significantly gone up in the last year. I also have a section on my webpage dedicated to these hammer builds with more information at derekmelton.com/
@@derekmelton So if I sign up for the class, does that price include the cost of materials?
If so, when will the next opportunity to sign up be?
@@marshaldudley5036 Your guess is as good as mine, I don't run the classes. Check with www.chappapeelacrafts.com/ and see, I hear they're already talking about a class in the spring. The cost includes everything, including meals during the weekend. You're responsible for your lodging but many stay on site in tents. Everyone who pays goes home with a hammer. The last thing we do is draw to see which hammer you're taking home.
@@derekmelton awesome. Thank you!
Who came up with the drill mixer to agitate the oil during the quench? I bet he's a painter or a dry waller. Great idea❤

Does each participant get a tire hammer? Or are they sold to others? And how much is the class?
I live in Vancouver WA and I’d love to sign up for one of these classes. Please reply with info.

Hi Clay Spencer? Tom Copland in Ayr Scotland. Do you have plans for that power hammer build, I am trying to rebuild my Blacksmiths shop at my house as I am to old to be traveling.
Any Advice would be nice.
This is badass
Forgive me to ask this for you sir, but have a project? I from Brazil and I think this tire hammer is amazing, I wish to take this class but my home is far away, if you have a project I will appreciate, thank you so much.
So, if everyone is only doing a couple of the processes it takes to complete one, how are they actually learning to create the whole machine? Do these people get a hammer when they are completed or would they have to buy it?
Everyone in the class that pays the full tuition cost goes home with a hammer, regardless of whether they turn one screwdriver the entire time or if they're responsible for completely welding every frame. It's a team effort. At the end of the class, each hammer is numbered and the participants draw numbers from a box. The fact that everyone knows that the hammer they'll take home is by random chance ensures that everyone is doing their job to the best of their ability. Nothing in the class structure says you have to do ONE task the entire time. Quite often, people move about from job to job. The important thing is that the jobs are getting done, on time, in the right order to ensure good hammers are being built. That is the job of the coordinators of the class and the system works very well.
@@derekmelton, well that’s pretty awesome. Are you doing the classes again anytime soon, or where can I find out more about it?
@@andrewtucker7990 I have only been a student at these classes. I've done the heat treating and documented the classes with these videos but I do not host them. I've attended 4 of them and brought 3 hammers home. They just had another one in April. I don't expect another class until sometime in the fall in Robert, Louisiana at the school. To see more about the school and to hear about more classes visit www.chappapeelacrafts.com/ I'd also suggest joining the Clay Spencer Tire Hammer users group on Facebook. Often other classes around the country are listed there.
