Cool Looking But Expensive For A Beginner Bladesmith
Had you considered putting grease fittings in all the spots with bushings? Maybe machine the bolts themselves to have through bores and grease fittings? Also, I hope you got a good deal on those locknuts because they aren't doing a whole lot if they're burnt or not engaging the threads enough.
Yes I actually tought about it, it would be a great upgrade idea for the future! Don't worry about the welded locknut it's only what I had on hands when doing the project I didn't need the locking action!

You can use a piece of of 1 1/2" or 2" steel wheel. Offset a hole , it will save you the weakness of the tire and less moving parts.Nice build though.
This is awesome. I just need to build a shop and buy $10k in tools and learn how to weld. I will get there.

This is a great build. I’ve had mine about a year and a half. Not sure how much the plans currently cost, I spent $75 I think, maybe $99? I substituted some parts and spent about $2000 overall.

When I saw this i was scrolling through trying to find some simple diy trip hammer video which is what I originally thought this was. but watched it end to end all the same the editing and sound is great how long did it take in real time? Nice trip hammer!

Hey, could you explain how and why the arms are constructed like that?
I understand that the outcome is a ram that has a variable depth so you can work on the metal as it changes size, but I don't understand the mechanical side of it.
I barely have the money for the plans, let alone the whole build, but I want to make strides to something little that fits in the hardy hole on my anvil
Honestly it is a bit of a weird mechanic, but the idea is that you compress the spring in the midle so that the arms are in tension and makes the ram "float". As you give more speed to the rotating shaft, you give more energy to the ram going further down and compressing more the spring.When the ram goes up, the spring help the motion by launching the ram upward.The spring also give a whiping motion that increase the force put into the workpiece. If it's a bit more clear.
By the way I'm pretty sure I saw someone on youtube tu exactly what you describe for your little power hammer. Good luck with your build !

Honestly everything work pretty well for the moment, but I would surely use a bigger anvil. And I need to also make a guard to cover the moving parts!

If you don’t mind my asking, were you to have the time at some point, what do you think the price would be for you to make that hammer? Also, do you know where I could find a decent little power hammer? I’m a disabled veteran and I’m home basically 100% of the time and want to start forging so I have something to do, but due to injuries and wounds sustained in combat I’m not really able to swing a hammer for long periods of time. So due to that fact, I basically have to have a power hammer or a press to move the majority of the metal. Thank you again for your time. You’re clearly an amazing craftsman. First, thank you very much for taking the time to compliment the craftsmanship ! Unfortunately I don't see alot of time in a near future (4 years or so) so I don't think that me making you a hammer is an option even tho I would really have enjoyed building an other one. If you want to buy a hammer, I know that Big blue hammer makes pneumatic ones there's also anyang power hammer who makes them and I also believe that coal ironworks sell some forging press. I hope this answer well your question !
What's the black material you're using for your friction slide?
It's uhmwpe. It's a plastic used for bearing surfaces and it's much cheaper than teflon
You welded nylon lock nuts on...
The edit makes it seem like you drilled holes with a spotting bit before tapping?
I recommend putting a thin piece of copper or aluminum in behind materials you're going to gang drill, it helps soak up the difference in dimensions do everything is clamped pretty evenly.
Some of your drill speeds seemed kinda high for the size of bits. Careful not to over heat or dull bits out.

What was the wash you used and the paint for the stand?
Ifor the cleaner it's a generic store bought degreaser for the paint I used some Tremclad paint !

I see that you have a wood saw with a diablo blade, how well does that work for you, I've been looking at evolution saws but they're so expensive. Have you had any issues or is it probably just as good?
It's actually an evolution miter saw designed to cut steel so the motor run at slower rpm, I would'nt recomend using a wood miter saw with a diablo blade... you will overheat the blade. But the evolution miter saw works well and if I remember correctly is about 350 or 400$!
@@KOPOprojects Right, but that's for the multi-material saw, I need to cut through 1/4 to 1in solid steel rod regularly, and it says 1/4 is all it can do. Can it do better than that? The reason I said expensive was that I was looking at the meant-for-steel line of their products. I'd be ecstatic if I didn't need that! If all they need is a blade for steel or nothing at all, then that would be great.
Most of the time I work with sqare tube so I rarely have to work with big steel stock like that but I know that steel band saw are really good for that and they are pretty easy to find used !

@@selwynhackett5471 I have the Evolution S380CPS and have cut round and square (steel) bar in the 1" range. You need to be mindful of how the blade is performing, AND have a good blade for the material. Otherwise, it cuts it. I've also used it to cut larger materials as well (solid and tube) without issue. MUCH better than using an abrasive blade saw. No dust produced is just one of the benefits. DO inspect the carbide teeth on the blade installed periodically and you'll get great performance from it.

I wondered why you used the rubber tire instead of gears...but then I thought you used the tire as a safety measure..and seizure would Allow for slipping..good design
The tire is actually used as a clutch too in order to engage the rotation of the hammer!
Is there something to limit rpm if you hold down full throttle?
The hammer is designed with the drive wheel ratio to not go over 300 rpm on the main shaft

Dang good work. For anyone unable to afford the tools and drill bits to make this themselves. Step drills are cheap alternative and also using a masonry bit in a drill press to burn through steel rather than slowly drill through it with cheaper bits. I've never been able to drill so quickly through thick or harder steel than I have with a masonry bit in a drill press. Once the piece and bit start to glow orange and it starts pushing through the piece it goes really quickly. The spinning sliver of glowing orange swarf gets a bit scary as it grows but as long as you're wearing at least goggles if not a full face mask and thick sleeved clothes it's ok. On a side note once while making a knife using an angle grinder I was so focused on what I was doing I didn't notice that my knit workgloves and hoodie I was wearing had gotten huge melt holes in them. Lol. Oh and safety tip NEVER wear any loose clothing while using anything spinning. I luckily found out this tip using a belt sander and wearing a loose t-shirt. Thankfully the Sander got pulled out of my hand enough I let go of the trigger and the shirt had enough mass to choke up the spinning as it climbed it's way towards my now exposed belly. Had it been my huge Makita angle grinder or my heavy duty Jet drill press I wouldn't have been so lucky and with the angle grinder not only would its speed not slowed by the time it ran out of short and reached skin without power the switch was stiff and took a few seconds to turn off. After the belt sander and until I replaced the switch I would literally tie the cord to my boot and had the power bar screwed to the wall near my foot so in an emergency all i had to do was move my foot away from the wall and it would unplug. It was an amazing grinder though. Double the size of a normal one and with a 5" grinding disk you could feel the gyroscopic effect pulling it from side to side a bit depending on tilt. It would eat hardened steel fast and with a cutting wheel slice through anything way faster than my other grinders could. Makita makes the best tools these days hands down.
If you have a decent drill sharpener (Drill Doctor or better) with a diamond wheel, you can regrind masonry drills to metal cutting angles.
Proper setup takes a bit of "Kentucky windage" with the Drill Doctor, because the stop isn't set up for use with the brazed on carbides which interrupt the flute used as the reference. However, if you set it up properly (a bit of trial and error), you can get a nice symmetrical grind on the carbides. With a larger diameter bit, it may useful to swap to the coarse grit drum to get close, then back to the fine grit drum to finish the grind.
With a proper tool and cutter grinder or a Deckel SO/SOE (or knockoff) regrinding should be cake.
I've done this several times to drill out stubborn wheel studs and the like. A Cole drill has been invaluable for such foolishness, but a mag drill or blacksmith's post drill, even a brace with chain drill, will also work, too.
How many tons is the blow of the hammer?
It's hard to say but it's a 50 pounds weight swinging 300 time per minute !
