Dorian Yates describes how young aspiring bodybuilders feel "indestructible" when it comes to their health.
Dorian Yates is a bodybuilder who pushed the limits of what was possible and kick started the mass monster era of bodybuilding - later cemented by Ronnie Coleman. But despite how far Dorian pushed his body, he eventually retired and moved away from maintaining a massive physique. This was largely due to preventing health issues down the road. Looking back, does Dorian think that young bodybuilders should be more concerned about their health? In our latest GI Exclusive Vault interview, Dorian Yates explains how young bodybuilders will always put the sport above their health - because they feel indestructible.
GI VAULT - is an extension of our GI Exclusive interviews. The difference? These interviews come straight out of the Generation Iron vault from the cutting room floor of our feature film documentaries. With over hours of interview footage that doesn’t make it into our final films, we’re now releasing them out into the world.

Generally speaking, social media has negatively affected people's mental health and common sense.
Especially common sense.
Your not wrong, I'm 20 years old and I feel my mental state is fucked, I don't care about my uni studies anymore all that I love doing is training. And social media fucks with me mentally thinking I look like shit
No doubt
....and body image...
Not generally speaking...absolutely speaking ot has
Dorian speaking the truth as usual.
D always 💯
That’s actually a pretty bad statement when they took the worse thing in their era. But bash the guys who do the same now. 🤷🏾♂️
Stuart Montgomery lmao not even close. He did even worse drugs probably
Such a general statement tbh I see way more guys from his era dropping dead than out era
Hipster767 what’s his most recent Vlad movie. The Original Mass Monster. He admits everything. No bullshit.
"You have to be a bit crazy to be extremely good at anything"
"Crazy Dedicated" that is.
"The average mindset is not going to make you number one in anything"
@@negativevizion3336 that still counts as being a bit crazy
Yeah, well, so Jesus was crazy.
@@edmundkemp2280 Absolutely he was crazy, he thought he was the son of "God", but he wasn't good at anything, except creating a cult that got millions killed.
The older bodybuilders were largely introverts. They lived like hermits, emerging from their cells a few times a year to compete. The new ones live in the public eye and upload to social media every day. They need to look good year round, it's insane.
Not really. That was Dorian Yates, but guys like Arnold were party animals.
Social media doesn't FORCE them to SHIT. That's an excuse and a bullshit one at that that older people use.
These people never had to force a 24/7 physique. They put that pressure on themselves when doing what they did to sell their brand and their products.
@@GeekedOutNeckbeard Yes that's pressure. That's the market, You don't do that, your career dies. That's the world we live in. You don't get to opt out. You participate or you fail. So yo can choose, to fail and vanish.
Man, you don't really understand capitalism or social media do you?
@MMAbadboy ..."Deeaad Meat".👌
Nicely said!
Say what you want but lee Haney, Dorian Yates, Arnold and frank zane all looked excellent when they got into older ages. They didn’t rely as heavily on the drugs and weren’t afraid to cycle off and lose some mass and definition every now and again. I think the top guys now feel more pressure to maintain their look 24/7 because of social media
Well said
Very good point. Never considered the social media aspect.
They also knew when to say when.
They will all be on TRT for the rest of their life ..
Dan Guryn so are plenty of guys who aren’t bodybuilders. TRT supplements a few times a week is a small price to pay for being considered a great in sport and making enough money to sustain you and your family for the rest of your life
There was MORE honesty in this 6:33 min then mike o'hearns whloe career
😭 facts
Hahahahahhahahah
you got me. I didnt check how long the video was😂😂
No idea why mike gets mentioned so much; there are plenty more legends out there that made hilariously more impact then him that have almost zero spotlight. 4x Mr Universe? OK. Waay more attention that he deserves. Sure he claimed bullshit about natty but there are people who look up to him, calling him Titan and shit. Its hilarious.
@@GregorEisenhorn and thats why he shloud be honset coz lot of people look up to him
Dorian is the wisest voice
in professional bodybuilding
No time for BS
I'm always amazed by the humility of true champions of any sport or endeavor.
I love that guy. He seems so down to earth & humble. He gives straight answers with no fillers.
Just gotta love Dorian's honesty and straight talking.I met him just before he won his first Olympia, and he is such a humble individual. He remains a credit to Bodybuilding.
KILLING yourselves for FAKE STEROID muscles = LOSERS!!
Stay natural buddy!
The most badass mr olympia ever the shadow...........
Correction...King Ronnie! Dorian was a great champion though.
@Dj_M1 you keep dreaming
@Dj_M1 yeah ok! I bet don't know what bad ass mean
His response to the narcissist question literally shows why he was one of the best there was.
Dorian has become the most brutally honest spokesman in bodybuilding and no one can really diss the guy because he's been there, he's paid his dues and he has earnt respect. When he speaks, you listen whether you agree or not with what he says.
Glad to see you guys are improving your content with BETTER interviews with people of relevance.
I just love it when he speaks as its just so honest.
4:50 extremely articulate in the way he described his attitude to competing
Mike "Natural" O'Hearn is very honest like Dorian 😊
Cringe.
I met Dorian at Filex in Sydney 2011. A real nice genuine guy who actually took the time to talk and took interest in what I was saying.
I came here for Yates' wisdom but never expected the guys interviewing to ask such challenging and thought-provoking questions. Well done.
eff'ing love this guy. such a solid dude.
I’ve had a lot of health problems since I was young so I’ve never felt “invincible” I’ve always felt vulnerable so I would never put myself in a position where I would fuck up my health or worse
me too
The smartest thing Dorian said was to first become a fitness trainer to understand how the components merge together. I became certified. Next, was Frank Zane advising making light weight as heavy as possible. Very solid advise, and very safety aware. The last thing was Fred Hatfield (Dr Squat) showing fitness as a strength to weight ratio. Dr Hatfield won respect with a Guiness Book squat 1016 at 250 body weight. Wisdom never gets old.
Dorian is 100% right there but he is also partly to blame for bringing in the mass and losing aesthetics, Ronnie just took it to another level and its been downhill ever since. Dorian is honest and points this out openly.
Mostly downhill I'll agree, but Phil carried the torch extremely well for the most part (I'm talking purely physically).
Yates compared himself to Michael Angelo--that distinction goes to Flex Wheeler the only one who came close to perfection.
Dorian has no blame the judges does
@@d0cn0tes I think he said hercules and Frank Zane Micahel Angelo.
@@bernardonunes128 Agreed! The judges ruined the sport forever by giving him his first Olympia win
Just straight up facts coming from the shadow. Gotta love the man
I can listen to Dorian all day, he has a lot of wisdom. I love his answers to if he thinks all body builders are narcissistic. 🇿🇦
Always a pleasure and refreshing to listen to Dorian. He has and always has been completely truthful, wise and humble; has a great deal of wisdom, and delivers his words with clarity and purpose. Not waffling, but gets straight to the point.
KILLING yourselves for FAKE STEROID muscles = LOSERS!!
Stay natural buddy!
You can see how this guy was so successful.
He has a good clear mind and always seems to speak common sense
Dorian is a very smart bodybuilder & coach ! Congrats! for your carreer !
Dorian is alive and healthy. Tells you all you need to know.

Great interview. 👍🏻
What a man, always a pleasure, my favorite bodybuilder by a country mile.
RIP to Ric Drasin!
Had my first heart attack at 39 and a quadruple bi pass at 40. Trust me the bigger picture is longevity!
I'm 39 and I'm trying to find out what are the symptoms of a heart attack...
@@mehdiachouri If your asking? It's not a heart attack! Still worth going to the Dr.
Dorian, smart as fuck, tough as fucking nails, and a legend of being HUGE and RIPPED, i mean "RIPPED" RIPPED ! 💪
Oh dear God Craig. Dorian Yates has your total adulation doesn't he and that's OK. I see him less heroically. Dorian has basic sense and the rat cunning to invent an image that is sellable and attractive. A Victoria Cross recipient, a woman giving birth and people that rescue abused animals are tough as fucking nails. They are also selfless. Cultivating huge muscles within the carpeted confines of a climate controlled mecca to obsessive behaviour doesn't qualify as tough as nails. And he's a legend because he was huge and ripped. Really? So it doesn't matter that he became huge and ripped by cheating he's still a legend? That's not a legend, that's a person who feels inadequate and needs to compensate. A legend is Gandhi, Mandela or Mother Teresa and I'm sure that Dorian Yates would agree that lifting heavy things doesn't make a person legendary enough to rub shoulders with real legends.
@@michellemaher8536 Do you know Dorians life story, and his accomplishments? He really is world class. I find yr comments unhelpful and ignorant.
@@michellemaher8536 , your dinner parties must be banging.
Dorian Yates has ALWAYS been my favorite Mr. Olympia. I remember ordering the 93 Olympia on vhs. I waited 12 weeks for it to come. I would watch his posing routine over and over. Still gives me chills when I watch it. The music is awesome 👌
crowd went nuts during his routine in 93
and you're right it does give one chills, its a brutal phisique...
ROIDERS have RENTAL muscles!
ROIDERS are FAKES!

Dorian wasn't my fav back in the day but i must say i enjoy his take on bodybuilding today. Smart guy
Such a legend. And i have to say, his words carry a lot of wisdom.
A highly intelligent and eloquent man. Always enjoy listening to him.
Dorian is very intelligent and articulate; he tells it like it is (was). A great interviewee.
Extremely wise bodybuilder! 4:48 Brilliantly stated. Dorian is one of the best bodybuilding legends around.
KILLING yourselves for FAKE STEROID muscles = LOSERS!!
Stay natural buddy!
Guys are trying to be bigger and bigger which MAYBE started in the 90s said Dorian freaking Yates
Arnold and Lou looked 10x better than anyone who came through the 90's and 00's...
Difference is that Yates had some prior muscle memory and the foundation. So when he went mass monster he was able to return to normal. These modern guys all stay 100% jacked for Instagram and don’t ever cycle off and work on cardio or conditioning.
@Dj_M1 Lou and Arnold still looked human, they still had great physiques, and have you noticed well into their 60's they have less health issues than those "rising stars" of the 90's and early 00's" Coleman can barely walk, while Arnold and Lou are still pumping and still living their day to day lives normally :)
@Dj_M1 you're trying to compare a clay sculpture to a balloon sculpture... Arnold looked superior to any of the "monsters" why do you think the Arnold classic is gaining more popularity than the open?? Give your head a wobble, just salty coz you've got a hard on for bubble gut
Sure there's an argument for that, but Arnold and Lee were massmonsters during the 70s-80s as well. Arnold was bigger than Scott and Lee was bigger than the Austrian Oak........ and Dorian Yates was bigger than Lee Haney.
I listen to him 24×7 he's full of knowledge & personally like his voice....👍
I have always respected Dorian because he is not full of BS and Narcissism, as are the majority of Bodybuilders in the media today. When I was younger I lifted to be stronger and look better but not to feed my ego as is the case today for so many.He is brutally honest and tells it like it is and does not give you what he thinks you want to hear..I get so tired of the pure BS that comes out of the mouths of so many people who want to impress others..Honesty ...really IS.. the best policy !
Dorian taking ronnie’s name means Ronnie was indeed great! Much respect to both of them!
Hes a legend..assessing the risk to reward ratio of steroids and then taking the right decision according to the persons desires or wants should always be the number one priority on anyone thinking about the same!
It definitely is strange that guys in their 20s have so much more to lose (as in life timeline) but are so much more careless. In my 20s I was crazy stupid with motorcycles, cars, etc. Now that I am old I check to make sure all the tire pressures are correct, taillights are working, etc, hahahaha. Oh well.
I did that with steroids lol.
Yeah you end up with a few little tri-cycle engines running around callin you dad. It changes you a touch, like the other comment you have so much to lose when older.
Like the honesty of Dorian!
I was on a plane with you and Debbie s week after you won a Mr olympia, your a great man and was a great champ, got to ask you question about diet in Belfast , where you guest posed, and when I wrote to you about sore knees , you answered, I respect that, a real champion, legend , and down to earth person, to the future 🙂
It's great that he is so honest, but it always saddens me a bit that all the benefits of weight/resistance training for pretty much anyone get lost in the whole steroids issue. I almost wish young people joining the gym didn't get to see the likes of Dorian and rich piani for the first five years just so they don't even think about steroids, they just get to enjoy the fun stuff and benefits of weight training without all the bullshit. Probably not explaining myself well but that's my two pence worth.
Very true......your body will give up. Structurally or Internally.
I think Ronnie Coleman needs to hear this. Ultimately his 'lightweight' mindset did him in. Training days after a back surgery is absolute madness. 'No pain no gains' is bullshit because pain indicates your body is breaking down and crying out for you to stop
@@joebloggs6922 100% I was a b.b. I competed from 95 to 98. In o8 I had 360°fusion to my lower back. I also had a broken pedicle screw. But I never returned to lifting. I knew the pain and the money, i was lucky to get through it. To this day i swim and walk. I've watched Ronnie's movie. He is obsessed and it's very sad because he had a chance.
Joe Bloggs Ronnie did what he wanted to do. Were there consequences ... yes but he chose that life and it worked for him
His mindset and attitude about bodybuilding is impressive. He is not oversized on his ego. He is pragmatic and honest about his use of steroids. He is very mindful about who he is trying to impress... the ones who matter. He is not trying to get validation all the time, by showing off at every chance. He only shows off when his "statue" is ready to be displayed on the gallery!
Very humble, courageous, and intelligent champion! Great role model!
Truth bombs all the way through, he lives his life that way, mad respect
Does the movie "Dorian Yates: The original mass monster" will be avaiable on netflix?
Proof that you can be a muscle monster and very intelligent. Great informative video Mr Yates 👍
My absolute favorite bodybuilder. A great man.
Totally agree with the last comment.now it's all about getting that look quicker.and alot of the time y see these young lads working out and they've not got a clue. Esp in these large gyms where everyone's looking at themselves all the time..
I love his voice and way of talking
Is there a way to order your book and ship to the U.S.? And only the hardcover is available? Thanks.
Dorian looks in such a good health state it's amazing. Well spoken like always.
Thanks to TRT
@@aaronhall4361 Yup. And knowing when to stop his pro career I guess. And not maintainng all that weight.
He was a really quiet champion in the 90's. I became a fan of his humongous monster hard detailed physique.
Now Im a fan of his mind. What a thinker whew!
He scared of 5g towers and doesn’t believe in corona virus, he has zero brain capacity outside of bodybuilding
@@SKOLBEARDCOMPANY You're quite the narcissist mate
I like Dorian but the all the hyperbole about what a genius he is and overblown adulation regarding his every utterance, is annoying. An interviewer should ask him what the acronym PEMDAS stands for...see what response we get. I'm not trashing him at all, again, I like Dorian. The man is successful and quite knowledgeable on bodybuilding matters. I get frustrated when someone can put complete sentences together and receive all this lavish praise about how brilliant they are.
@Michael Miller - Yeah but what the fuck would Dorian care about the order of operations in mathematics? He brought forth and improved upon Arthur Jones' and Mike Mentzer's High Intensity method, and applied that to his craft. He then went to win 6 Mr. Olympias with that method (and the conditioning showed).
When doriyan speaks ,You listen
Simple as that
Love his comment on how people now more than ever are using social media as their stage. He competed not to be narcissistic but it was about what it required to compete and win. This is why numbers have dropped even before the plan-demic. If you are going to train spend tons of your time and treasure doing drugs or not support the sport...Compete! Ultimate high to try to beat the competition by pushing yourself and see how you compare to others best. Don't hide behind filters...
Thank you for posting this. Use the sport for personal progression. As Boyer coe once said “I never liked the sport, but it was the best way to track my progress”. I do believe it’s important for bodybuilders of all levels, to have an exit plan in your competitive “career”.
Great champion and now great honest coach.always a fan
You gotta love this guy! Telling the truth!
The fact that people care how they look and dont care about there health is amazing
Intro music wasn't loud enough. Please make it louder next time, we need our ear drums pierced.

Hes the one people need to listen to. The way he trained back was the correct way he has a video on it too.
I’m glad that he uses his life to educate other people
Mad respect for Dorian telling it like it is!!
Dorian's honesty is refreshing.
Legend
One reason Dorian is so great is his humbleness and lack of ego. Same with Ronnie. The ego is a double edged sword, and many guys wind up impaled.
The greatest !!
"The average mindset is not going to make you number 1 in anything".... I'm going to use that quote 😉👌
I believe it's not only the bodybuilders, it's the audience as well. They always wanna see bigger and bigger which has shaped bodybuilding more n more into a business which shouldn't be to an extreme.
Best Trainer I’ve had
Dorian is looking well. Close to 60 now I believe.
he's spot on and and what I find worse now though is the women so many teenage girls now im seeing use gear and getting huge they are going to be regretting it later in life
Simply. Spot on...
Dorian looks great.
Lol I remember when guys actually used to take time off...imagine that!
No such thing as time off anymore.
The Goat have spoken
Wisdom at it's finest .
Hi Dorian, back in the 90’s I had a photo of signed at a bodybuilding fair in Germany. I couldn’t believe that even my quad was smaller than your arms… I have to admit I was not a big fan of you at that time but gosh I am so positively touched by how you evolved as a human !! Thank you for being yourself. Cheers !
Bodybuilding gives with one hand and takes with the other. It helps those with low self-esteem, but encourages them to be too concerned with popularity. Many of my friends who once called ourselves bodybuilders in the 90s and 2000s matured enough to realise this and took a step back. Sometimes there's a good time to pull the plug on something that has severed its purpose but is no longer helping. That's my experience of bodybuilding anyway.

Well Dorian is talking shite because a bunch of bodybuilders died in his era due to steroid abuse. Andreas Munzer, Mohammed Benaziza
, Mike Matarazzo etc while guys like Tom Prince, Flex Wheeler and many others had to retire due to organ damage caused by steroids. All of these guys competed in Dorians era.
@@royalzak2670 back they they abused diuretics to get dry and yes some died, too bad as they were great bb
Yes Ronnie set new standards on extended stomach
in that day the competition was real hardcore. the mr.o today will not hit the top 5

For him it's about the work itself. He views it as sculpting and he enjoys the art
Where I can download Dorian's movie?
Always speaking the truth.
Great icon ,,how he said sculpturing a work of art,, taking it to the Art show to be judged..by the experts..Blood an Guts alright.
The difference in conditioning is due to how guys approach adding size. In the 90s, they took a slower approach. They focused on adding muscle the right way and gradually gaining size. Nowadays, to be competitive in the IFBB, you have to reach the "carrying capacity" for your physique and you have guys like Rafael Brandao at 240lbs being docked for being too small, so guys try to put on as much muscle as quickly as they can.
This man is extremely well spoken.
