    Reflecting on his retirement, Dorian Yates considers his injury a blessing in disguise.
    What could have happened if Dorian Yates didn't retire after his sixth win? That's a question that pops up in many fans eyes when looking back to bodybuilding's past. The truth of the matter is that Dorian couldn't continue to compete. His tricep tear was very serious and caused Dorian to earn his final Olympia victory by the skin of his teeth. He knew then that he would rather go out on top than continue towards a downward path. In our latest GI Exclusive Vault interview, Dorian Yates explains how he now considers the injury a blessing in disguise as it forced him to focus more on long term health.
    GI VAULT - is an extension of our GI Exclusive interviews. The difference? These interviews come straight out of the Generation Iron vault from the cutting room floor of our feature film documentaries. With over hours of interview footage that doesn’t make it into our final films, we’re now releasing them out into the world.

    Forgot top level athletes, we all struggle, especially men, when we lose our goal. This can be down to life changes, economic changes and other things. Right now, there must be millions of people struggling with circumstances thrust upon them by the Corona panic. Things we were living to do, to achieve, gone.. and not because of us, but because of outside forces.

      Generally after retirement at that level, your skin gets loose and muscle is replaced by fat. Yates did a good job of getting “thin fit” after retiring which is hard to do.

    This is why I’m selective with the bodybuilders I watch because most are so egotistical it seems and get so caught up in the sport it seems that they end up dead or with horrible injuries. In my past I struggled with addiction to roids and other things so when I considered taking things to next level I knew I had a passion and motivation to do it but it’s guys like this that you want to study and learn from because there genuine and actually educated. Bodybuilding is an extremely selfish sport I would say at the PRO level. Watching this video reminds me of my fears if I get a major injury or get some medical issues that are irreversible I’m screwed because I’m a father and plan on building a family. I respect Jeremy Buendia for this because I see that he stepped away and although he wasn’t at the top anymore he was still in his prime somewhat so to step away for his family is real. I understand you can still compete at a high level and balance life/family etc but like he said in the video a major injury or problems like Ronnie has you can’t balanced even if you had the mentality to. Props to this man 💯

      @KenzoSuzuki Smith I blew out my knees because I was an ice hockey goalie. I started playing semi pro at 20 and by the time I was 24 had to retire. I tore my meniscus in my right knee at an early age (about 12). I played a lot of sports as a kid and teenager. Because of the strain I put on my knees I ended up getting more injuries and needing more surgeries. While I was still playing hockey I used to get cortisone shots in my knees to help the swelling and pain. However, cortisone also breaks down cartilage and soft tissue faster than usual. This sped up the deterioration of my knees. My ligements just started to disintegrate.
      If I could give any advice on preventing knee injuries it would be to take care of your knees better. Strengthen the small muscles around the knee, ice after playing sports, strengthen your thighs and hamstrings to take pressure off the joint, avoid cortisone shots unless they're absolutely necessary. Also, some people think you can have flexible knees or joints and they do odd stretches thinking it helps when in all actuality it's putting strain on the joint and will ruin it. It's not the joint that's flexible but the muscles and ligements around the joint that are flexible.

    • @Batman-ml1qb
      @Batman-ml1qb 3 роки тому +1

      @KenzoSuzuki Smith I still do quad extensions and hamstring curls to keep the strength in my legs. I recommend staying away from squats. They put a lot of pressure on the knee and you can get the same strength from doing sumo lifts which doesn't put nearly as much strain on the knee. Also, for cardio stick with a stationary bike if possible rather than jogging. Running in general puts alot of force on the knees while a stationary bike puts almost none. Stationary bikes also help build the quads as well as your cardio.

Dorian had flaws in his physique front double bicep, side chest Ronnie would have won those poses. Dorian wasn't going to beat Ronnie on rear double bicep, lats spread would have been a toss up. Abs and thigh Ronnie would definitely win he would have the edge on the legs... We talking 98/99 Ronnie here

      It’s coz they do synthetic steroids. They bind to androgen receptors causing a cascade of events including hypertrophy of muscles. Most bodybuilders die from heart attacks due to side effects of steroids. Common side effect is high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Heart disease sets in early and they die. It’s extremely dangerous. I think cocaine addicts have a better chance of living. The human body was not meant to be that big.

    • @adamvegh9262

      @@sidscarborough3160 its crazy how you say cocaine addicts have better chance to live. You know what, somewhat i believe it. Just shows how dangerous steroids and other things these bodybuilders take. And yes I 100% believe that the human body is not "designed" to be that big and muscular. Its designed for survival, slow progress and longevity. Anyway, still shows that there are some people that can take these dangerous drugs for much much longer than other people. I think thats because they have better genetics overall. And im not talking about phisycal appearance. Hell you can look ugly as sin outside but you can still live up 110 years because you have a good system inside.

      Such a dumb statement. There are mandatory poses that they get judged on. Even if he lost in the FDB, he still crushed everyone on every other pose. The bicep injury was only noticeable in the FDB pose. His only questionable olympia victory was in 97. IMO, Dorian Yates is the greatest My Olympia ever. Some people may not like his physique, but you can never question his work ethic and presentation on stage. You can also never question the level of competition either. He beat more all-time best bodybuilders than anyone in history. You are judged by the competitors you went up against.

    • @sidscarborough3160

      I absolutely get the logic in what you're saying. I caught an in depth interview in which DY was questioned precisely on this issue. He went through explaining mandatorys pose4pose with his closest competition that night. He won more poses than he lost, as well as easily being in the hardest condition of any competitor as usual, and quality to size he was as big as anyone. Previously I felt similarly to you, but after witnessing that interview, as well as having been around BBing long enough to realize the only way you know for absolute positive is if you are there with a judge's vantage view, & most importantly know precisely what you are looking at. All that said, yes that was Dorian's weakest Olympia showing, however, he was was so far ahead of the rest, the only one beating DY that night would've been a previous DY.

      Kasimir: Agree entirely. I look back on at least a couple of those Olympias, and I cringe. Dorian and I disagree entirely on the importance/lack of importance of the impact of an injury; he feels that it's no reason for one to diminish 'the overall package'. For me, winning a Sandow means subjective perfection. And as amazing as he looked in all of his wins, his injuries 'disqualify' him from hoisting the statuette on some of those occasions. As far as the calves bit goes...as the official Herald of The Calves Gods, I'm known for yammering on about how crap/never-going-to-be-big calves are an instant disqualifier. Is this 'unfair' to guys who will never have great calves? Sure. But life ain't fair; it's just fairer than death. (Thank you, 'The Princess Bride'. LOL) Which is why I believe there should be a 'From The Knees Up' division. (Only _half_ joking.)
