Seems like match fixing was a major problem across many sports in the 1910s and 1920s. 1919 is when the infamous Black Sox scandal happened in baseball. Back then, professional athletes made decent money, but certainly not enough to pass up a fixing opportunity to make multiple years’ wages in one go. It’s fascinating to learn about these historical events as sports leagues developed into what they are today.

So basically Arsenal have always used their history as a way to justify any of their claims, meanwhile Spurs have always whined about things not going their way when they are responsible for it? and all the while, Chelsea is caught up in a chaotic situation, where their fate is undecided So nothing has really changed then, even in modern football.
I usually keep the comment section on YT hidden and don't really comment on videos these days, but you said one thing that I absolutely didn't agree with so here I am. At the end you said that the whole scandal was inconsequential as Spurs got promotion the next year anyways. But what if Tottenham got promoted and Arsenal had to play in Division 2 the next year and some other club won promotion next year? It might be inconsequential from Tottenham and Arsenal's perspective but it was definitely consequential for the other clubs in Division 2. P.S.: Really liked the quality of the 2 videos I've watched on your channel so far. ❤
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, much appreciated! That's a very fair point well made. Admittedly I was looking at it through the lens of the Arsenal / Tottenham rivalry, but I can see how that might be reductive. Will keep that in mind in the future!
I have heard a few stories from old pros about people (usually towards the end of the season when there are possibilities of trophies or relegation) trying to pay off opposing teams to guarantee results. Some of the stories even involve people that aren't "Ron Devie". For some bizarre reason there was one season at the end of the 80s when there were 21 teams in the first division.
I think when the decision was made to reduce Division 1 (as it was then) from 22 to 20 teams, they didn't want to affect too many teams at once, like four down & two up, or two down & nobody up, etc., so they spread the change over two seasons.

This video popped up on my feed so I watched this to see what you would cover. I was pleasantly surprised, i like the fact you looked out the old maps, ive had to do this to prove it to people myself. if you had added the next map for 1892 the grounds name is changed from Everton to Liverpool. i Like the fact you kept it brief but concise without bias and well put together , i know there is more to the story you should make a more in depth one. here's a couple of things i tell people about the club. Liverpool's first strip was Blue and white before changing to the familiar red and white. (i don't know if Houlding/McKenna did this to wind Everton up ) Some people assume that one team was Catholic and one team was Protestant, in fact i believe both teams were started under the same religion. St Domingo's are part of the protestant Methodist church and Houlding was a staunch Protestant and also in the orange order. Being a Scouser and a Red I get asked this a lot in Scotland due to the fact Liverpool's first squad was made up of Scotsmen. a lot of Glasgow Celtic fans i know assume Liverpool is a catholic club and are surprised by this. however Glasgow Rangers fans love that fact. My good man. A british gentleman should refer to a Lieutenant as a 'leff-ten-ant' much like how it is not 'ko-lo-nel' but 'ker-nel' for Colonol. As a british commentator you surely must know this difference as it will surely come up very often when discussing football...
Norris was not actually banned for the illegal payments. He was banned cos he took the FA to court for libel and lost (the illegal payments investigation was supposed to remain private, but it was leaked to the press, Norris then sued the FA, implying the FA was suggesting Norris had acted dishonestly - as illegal payments in an era when a maximum wage was in place was commonplace - and numerous teams had been caught out). The FA back then would overreact when their authority was "challenged", as Norris, Enoch West (the 5 other surviving match fixing players accepted their guilt and were reinstated in 1919), and Leeds City all found out the hard way.
It certainly puts the “Never relegated!” boast from Gooners in a new light. Maybe not relegated from the top flight but it appears they didn’t earn their place anyway! There’s only one way to deal with this and that’s making them earn their place in the top flight legitimately. Until then it’s back to the Championship for them! 😁😜
We still have footballers today who feel that it is okay to make lewd and vile sexual gestures to an audience that included children, and an English media and fan base who will jump in to defend a playing making disgusting sexual gestures towards an audience that includes a large percentage of children.
