  • Scouse not English: Why is Liverpool different from the rest of England?
Why do Liverpool fans boo the national anthem? Where does the Scouse accent come from? Why are people from Liverpool called "Scousers"? And why do some people from Liverpool say they are Scouse, not English?
Liverpool has a distinct identity, and many Scousers who live there identify more with the city than the rest of the country. Liverpool football fans have even been known to boo the British national anthem at football games. We travelled to Liverpool to find out where the tension between Liverpool and the rest of England comes from.
Frank Carlyle, a historian and lecturer from Liverpool, explained his take on the phrase "Scouse not English", walking us through the Liverpool general transport strike of 1911, to the Thatcher years, to the Hillsborough disaster. He also reveals where the Scouse accent came from, and why people from Liverpool are called "Scouse".
In the 1900s, the Liverpool general transport strike saw tension between Liverpool and the rest of England reach a boiling point. In the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher's conservative government wanted to pursue a strategy of managed decline in Liverpool, AKA strategic abandonment. In 1989, in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster, much of the English press and the emergency services deflected the blame for the disaster onto Liverpool fans themselves. As a result, the Sun newspaper is banned in Liverpool. Did these key events push Liverpool away from the rest of England?
As a bustling port city, Liverpool was once considered "the second city of the empire". As the British Empire declined, so did Liverpool's importance as a port. Nowadays, Liverpool is often unfairly looked down upon by other parts of England. So how did Liverpool go from being the second city of the Empire, to one that is so often looked down upon today, where some of its residence prefer to identify as Scouse, not English?

I was born in Liverpool, worked in SE Asia for 30 yrs it always fills me with pride when people from Japan, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia tell me how much they love my city, one of my favourite nights was in Singapore when I was invited to the Singapore LFC fan club, when the members heard I was a real Scouser they wouldn’t let me pay for a drink, they even asked me to bless their flag YNWA.

@James Bong this pathetic attitude of yours Jim is another reason why the people of Liverpool feel the way they do. As a young man I loved my cars. My first was a Triumph Spitfire. After that I had a Xr3i, then a Xr2i then a Escort turbo. Non of these cars (my pride and joy) were ever scratched or broken into in Liverpool. I had a girlfriend in Blackburn where my Xr3i was broken into the stereo was stolen and the car vandalised. My turbo was stolen while visiting family in Bracknell and a car years later again broken into this time in Birmingham when attending finals day at Edgbaston. This isn't exactly a scientific poll but does show at the very least Liverpool is as safe and its people certainly no more likely to commit burglary as anywhere else in the UK. Its time this pathetic stereo typing was put to bed.

Well said mate and what you said about our city is pretty much what 99% who go there say they love it. Liverpool is 5th on the most dangerous cities for crime but the large majority and the nature of the crimes are mainly drug related as it plays a big part in European drug trafficking. Most crimes are assault or murder mainly related to drugs. London and Leeds as well as Cleveland and Hartlepool have a higher crime rate than Liverpool but this part is left out when Liverpool is said to be crime capital of England simply not true.

Liverpool has a great reputation outside England specially for being The Beatles hometown. But once I went there, I understood why it is so special. That said, wherever I worked, they were snobby about anywhere up north. Working in the investment banks, one guy told me 'you'll get burgled if you move back'. I did a quick search online, and where I was moving to in Liverpool had a far less crime rate than where he lived in London!! Really made me laugh. The class system in the UK is still strong. But the best defence for anywhere is for people to visit and see for themselves. Everyone loves it who I've had visit. Thanks again for such a wonderful piece. I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact she hated the very idea of Britain managed decline, which was an idea that was widespread in the civil service at the time. It was also popular amongst economists. She spoke against this idea in her many speeches.
She did not lie about Hillsborough. She was LIED TO about H. in a report given to her by the police. A couple were there from Llangrannog to meet the husband's brother who lived there in Liverpool.
When they learnt that I was there from Casnewydd (Newport) in South Wales, and that I intend to speak fluent Welsh someday, we had an extensive conversation within that queue that day.

Liverpools whole history is built on immigration. Why do you think scousers are so welcoming and friendly? It’s because, it’s been imbedded into the city’s culture for centuries. To be respectful and helpful to travellers, who come by or stay. As, many scousers were shipmen or tradesmen themselves.
Also, because scousers are just unique 😉

completely missed out the Liverpool City Council (Derek Hatton etc) dispute,
part of the managed decline which i never knew had "official" status, so let me try....
Liverpool was seperated from the rest of the country, and in the mid 1980s the City Council
said that the city had had 30MIL pounds "stolen by Thatcher"
but all the other councils that also had stood up to rate-capping etc backed out and left
      Liverpool CC isolated......
but the year the dispute kicked off was 1984 and about the time the coal miners came out on strike,
against Thatcher and her de-industrialisation policies
and so Liverpool City Council, Derek Hatton & Tony Mulhearn etc LEFT THE MINERS IN THE LURCH
so the miners were defeated because of the total lack of solidarity apart from a few train drivers in Scotland
and it's a reason there is basically NO Militant in Liverpool (Socialist Party they are called nowadays)
which at least is something good!

I know the ordinary British citizens don’t make government policies regarding my country but their ignorance of ordinary citizens about the atrocities carried out here in Ireland is definitely offensive. The British government butchered their own Liverpudlians like they did the Irish. But that’s down to the low calibre of British politicians. I would like to think that the friendly character of Liverpool is due to the large population of Irish descent and that a lot of the dissidents are of Irish descent too. There is no honour in the British government.

The fierce rivalry between the two clubs of the city is legendry, as is the fierce loyalty fans feel to each other in times of crisis. Both teams have a rich and colourful heritage, what a shame to concentrate on one. I'd always heard of Liverpool as jokingly being referred to as the capital of Ireland not Wales. As there are many mixed marriages in the city, Everton suffered just as much as Liverpool. The support from Everton FC and its supporters after Hillsborough proving the point despite the events of Heysel Stadium 1985 . Standing alone and fighting authority is unfortunately a trite forced upon those who inhabit the city. This is where the renowned sense o humor arises. True. I'm a Lancashire lass not a Scouser. Merseyside, is a political construct from early 1970s. We called it 'stew' not scouse growing up. The Liverpool boundary was Mackets Lane. Halewood Village was outside the boundary. Bluebell woods (all gone). Ford/Jaguar didn't exist. My Great Grandfather was a strapping 18year old Blacksmith in Bailey's Lane, Halewood in the Census 1861. My Father born 28 Gateacre Brow, Lancashire. Age 83

English is a fake culture. Intended to cover over the Indigenous Irish culture of both Irish islands.
The religious cult paid off middle and upper class people to allow them into society and they have been lying ( among carrying out other crimes) in history books ever since. When a leader agreed to let churches in then the religious cult gained control of society without any armies invading or fighting they would slowly build more churches over time and over time Irish leaders got replaced with foreign puppets just like nowadays as the london mayor or brit pm or the unelected Irish Taoiseach have all been installed into power with no armies invading or having wars/battles. Irish took in migrants avoiding the 'holy roman empire'/ roman cult.
That's why the east coat of 'england' has the highest population of scandinivian/europeans.
All 'english' people know this and as they know the english origin stories are made up/fake and can't actually name their supposed leader/s like people know of Hannibal or Ghengis Khan or Alexander etc. The roman religious cult didn't know DNA would be discovered and it shows the whole roman invasion and anglo invasion stories to be fake/made up. The majority DNA on both Irish islands is still Irish. only about 2% roman brit DNA exist there.
The Irish started european cultures ages ago. They all know this, we didn't need dna evidence to prove it. The roman cult has made up the fake 'celtic' propaganda claiming Irish were savage and didn't advance and populate europe with no religious cult controlling them. Nobody was called 'celtic' or celts' most of the anti Irish 'celtic' propaganda was put together in the 1700's as Irish clans advanced with no religious cult controlling them.
No genuine person would claim they are "proud" to be from a non existent culture.
Look how the fake culture uses Irish as their best in all fields as it's really still Irish land with some european imported for replacement migration. Kane Grealish Rice Maguire or Lennon McCartney or Billy Connolly etc what's supposed to be roman dna people or anglo dna people is always actually Irish DNA people. The latest 'english' celeb that found out they are from the genocide food removal at gunpoint done by the roman/prot religious cult during the mid 1800's.

The reason they are looked down upon is because of their unions. They demanded better conditions for the workers - and because Liverpool was so important, and so much trade came through it, the unions and workers had a massive amount of power.
The rich used the media to turn the public against the workers (and unions), and from that it was a short step to denigrate all the people of Liverpool.
Working people owe Liverpool a huge debt.

Lots of UK cities have been called the second city of Empire. But probably Glasgow is the most often referred to as it. It was a strange experience hearing Rangers fans singing the national anthem and LFC fans booing it at Anfield recently. Up to them, of course. And being Glaswegian, I totally understand their preference for local identification over a national one. But that also means they have to accept the antipathy it attracts. Still good people whatever their outlook etc.

@@geraldwalsh6489 It was indeed. As I said, a few cities have been labeled this. But I would always suggest Glasgow is most often referred to as such. I'm from Glasgow so I would!! I also said I understand why Liverpudlians boo the National Anthem. Rangers are the establishment club in Scotland and represent Glasgow's historical affiliation with Empire and the monarch. We've always sang the NA and always will. The SNP attempted to categorise its singing at matches as a public offence. They, as usual, failed. Liverpudlians rejecting the notion of Britishness is their privilege. But it only bolsters negative attitudes of the city.
