I just want to take a second and just remind everyone how much of a "diamond in the rough" Spencer is. He has one of the most extensive ranges for a male rock singer amd hits them with ease and in live performances. No other singer could pull this off the way Spencer can. His voice is pure gold. He has such depth, emotion and immersion in his voice. If Spencer ever decided to quit singing just because of all the criticism, i'd lose it. Spencer is by far my favorite singer and my personal idol. He fits the Periphery sound perfectly. I honestly don't know what I'd do not hearing Spencer anymore. He can pull off almost any sound. Pop, rock, jazz, punk, emo, harcore, anything. He's a ball of pure talent.
bruh it's so weird seeing these comments from years ago talking about how his voice was like considered questionable when he's easily one of the best singers today.
Look, I'm a musician, and having listened to both Alpha and Omega, I can honestly say this band is overflowing with talent. The vocals, contrary to all the haters' opinions, are top notch. Spencer has a very raw and unfiltered air about his singing that is very refreshing. It's a welcome departure from all the edited and mechanized singers we hear today. Ten years from now, I believe people will appreciate these albums as masterpieces. Just wait and see.
kbridges2343 Definitley. I can't wait until progressive music like this gets back into the mainstream view and people look back on this as one of the most definitive progressive albums. Fucking love this shit.
Chickenwomp I've been told music I like is corny, then I hear what they like... If someone could scroll through your music they would find corny music.
Well said!!! I’ve been saying I think they are some of the most underrated musicians I’ve ever followed.. every member of this band is elite at what they do and Spencer’s vocal range is remarkable
OFFICIAL LYRICS: A shadow in these walls... Yes that is all I am A prison deep under fortress grounds where they spill the blood of man A second chance at life is all I've dreamed of For now inside these walls I stay Sitting far away, I watch the blackness grow Never mind what is underneath the stone It's a life we're living all alone Step out in the rain and feel the deep sorrow Light is calling from the narrow road Sometimes kindness speaks in tongues with one of them I can see love in her eyes If I fall, death will never stain one of his hands I find safety in these lies A second chance at life is all I've dreamed of For now inside these walls I stay Sitting far away, I watch the blackness grow Never mind what is underneath the stone This life we live alone Step out in the rain and feel the deep sorrow Light is calling from the narrow road The chains are part of me Stale air is all I breathe down here I need to find a way I'm gonna find my way far from here... Another chance at life is fading slowly Upon the cross I burn Sitting far away, I watch the blackness grow Never mind what is underneath the stone This life we live alone Step out in the rain and feel the deep sorrow Light is calling from the narrow road
It's crazy how polarizing spence is. Absolutely love his vocals. He can be a little rough here and there live but his ideas and harmonies are everything.
This song is surprisingly epic as all hell. The slow tempo building ever so slightly until a sweet rift comes piercing out, mixed with some heavy chugs and a brilliantly used voice that can reach most high guitar notes. Im gonna be honest, i wasn't completely happy with this new album my first listen, but the more i listen the more i realize how amazing and diverse Alpha and Omega are. I feel like i must listen to Periphery's music a few times through to fully understand and feel what exactly they were going for. Almost like reading a hard book, you get more out of it after you read it a few time. Heres to Periphery, the hard books of music.
I'm so sick and tired of people complaining about Spencer's vocals. Sure, his voice may not be as deep or masculine as all you meathead monkeys would like, but as a vocalist myself, I think what he does is phenomenal. To have that much range in clean AND screamed vocals takes so much more talent than he's given credit for. And it kind of makes no sense to complain about him cause he's been their vocalist since Periphery I, so don't act so pissed about something you already knew would happen. If you don't like it, don't listen. Simple
Well Marky mark holcomb plays with skyharbor occasionally and has helped them write tracks. He even plays some guest guitar on their guiding lights album. Love skyharbor by the by
You can never go wrong with periphery, they don't disappoint, love all of the albums they've made. Spencer's vocals and those instrumentals. Mmm fucking perfectt.
yea Mynn, words like "best" or "better" can't really be applied to music realistically - especially with a band like Periphery. Their evolution through successive album releases only displays the diversity of their music through their years, making it simply impossible to compare albums or even songs from each album. This is why I think people LOVE this band - they don't release anything unlikable! They sport many different sounds, even within a single album (Juggernaut, for example). Every song on every album has substantial girth, both in melody and DJENT.
You know there's a thing called "acquired taste" especially with singing. You need to know what the singer is thinking and get what they're going for the truly like it. That's why I like all of Spencer's vocals.
Coming back to the comments almost a decade later and in hindsight it's a little funny to see comments getting worried about Spencer quitting the band; especially after they released V.
Who are these people? This song is the most auto-tuned song on the album. I thought the comment was either sarcastic or extremely dumb. Either way 'Lol' is really the only appropriate response.
Lol a third of this album is auto-tuned. He produces himself I agree, but he also corrects his errors. Though he did miss a few spots. I don't mind the auto-tune so much because they're super cool melodies, but it's definitely there.
One of my absolute favorite vocalists.......fry's always on point and his clean register and technique is amazing. Dude hits these notes on stage like hes in a booth w a bottle of merlot and a cheeseburger. #acumen
Anybody notice the reuse of the Black Minute lead theme at the end of this? It's at 4:37 in this song and at 3:22 in A Black Minute. Also at 2:44 in Graveless. This band never ceases to amaze me.
Honestly the more I listen to this song (and both albums in general) the more I come to appreciate what Spencer's doing. Sure at the beginning I was skeptical like everyone else about his certain...nasally tone. But after giving Alpha/Omega a few more listens he's really gone far beyond his scope in P1 or P2 (even if it isn't in the direction some of us want) but its starting to grow on me. I think more people need to come at the albums with an open mind to both the instruments AND the vocals. 2cents
Fuck yes. Finally listening to the song i've been so eager to listen too ever since Mark posted a short 15 second guitar playthrough on instagram of this song. :)
Zis song is truly a beautyfphul beauteh. And man, I really love how it transitions into "Graveless"- Ah cannot resist the headbayngs when it starts l:) And Then Graveless into Hell Bellow….OOOHHHUUUUHHHHHH!!! The transitions from song to song on this album along with resounding well with the story are quite the fantastic.
Sarcasm for all the trolls. Seriously. This album was like the one that made me forget that certain bands have spent the last five years making an album some are still waiting for. Great job Periphery.
I don't think Spencer's vocals are downright terrible like some people think, in fact sometimes I think he sounds a bit like Darryl Palumbo, who I (and many others) consider a fantastic vocalist. But ultimately I don't think he's the best fit for Periphery. I think he's a perfect fit for FFTL actually, I'd rather see him just drop Periphery and dedicated 100% of his time to FFTL while letting Periphery find a vocalist who fits better with their prog/tech style.
So is this a musing post-indoctrination into the cult or simply after the sins comitted I wonder... Perhaps the sorrow is an allusion. I'm infatuated with the emotion of his self struggle
Dude you also have to consider the tuning and key of the other instruments Spencer accommodates that on another level if you you try singing the songs and octave down in your voice it sounds so stupid and also gets way to low to even sing aggressively like he does
Although I really don't mind spencer's vocals, I would prefer this particular track to be an instrumental. The song is beautiful with the instruments alone and personally while I DO love spencer's vocals, this is his worst performance on juggernaut. It picks up after a while thoughout the song, but the beginning verse is about the corniest thing ive ever heard lol I cant help but have a slight grin when I hear it.
Hmmm. I disagree. BUT I think what they should have done is more gradually transitioned from the final poppy minor-key chorus to the darker interlude at the end. Good spot, I might have overlooked that.
What?! No way. Without the lyrics and vocals this song would be missing the key emotional element. The chorus shows how talented this singer is. It's so simple and so haunting and so well sung. You just don't get that anymore. So shut up and buy the CD

almost 10 years later, and i'm still here wondering how this song was even created. Absolute perfection. Thank you for everything.

Chickenwomp I've been told music I like is corny, then I hear what they like... If someone could scroll through your music they would find corny music.
Totally agree dude. These albums are so amazing.

Thank you, Sir.
The guitar work shows a great deal of Opeth influence. Sublime.
AmperageBassist came here to look for this exact opinion lmao. 100% agree.
This is without a doubt the most beautiful acoustic guitar part I've ever heard, props to Marc Holcomb...you legend

Idk why but 3:12 hits me with every existing emotion I've ever felt.
Yes. That's the best part in the song
Yes, that's periphery man
I got the Alpha and Omega in the mail Friday and this is probably THE song I find myself falling in love with. Just absolutely amazing.
JayShockblast, stranger things is my favorite song by them.
can we talk about matt's sick fills in this song
The electronic part at 3:12, into that sick ass fill to go back in the chorus is just 😚👌🏻
Now all Priestess has to do is make a song called Periphery.
How the turns have tabled
This song is surprisingly epic as all hell. you hit the nail on the head
amen friend!
My goodness I could not have put it better. It took me a little bit to appreciate their genius, and boy I'm glad i stuck with it.
Yea, this song's structure is insanely well done
I'm so sick and tired of people complaining about Spencer's vocals. TheTurpinator that low note was actually Casey Sabol.
TheTurpinator low scream*
TheTurpinator but either way the part at 4:17 of stranger things is probably lower.
Wtf dude? I'm trying to defend his vocal style and you act like I'm trolling
Check out Periphery Scott Stapp audition
I just recently realized that at 4:37 the theme from black minute starts playing but in a different time signature than usual.
This is a very skyharbor-esque song. Has that ambience to it.
Well Marky mark holcomb plays with skyharbor occasionally and has helped them write tracks. He even plays some guest guitar on their guiding lights album. Love skyharbor by the by
This song is so incredible I can’t even describe it. It makes me feel this feeling that I just can’t explain.
One of the best vocalist of all time no doubt! Best bands!
You can never go wrong with periphery, they don't disappoint, love all of the albums they've made. Spencer's vocals and those instrumentals. Mmm fucking perfectt.
This is better than a glass of warm milk before Michael tucks me in at night.
Warm milk and caffeinated coffee OMG!
Why does the best track on the record only have 4000 views?
it came out a week ago give it time
Mynn Best track is pretty...opinionated. I personally think of everything from Alpha and Omega that The Bad Thing is the best. just taste.

I like watching people fight on Periphery videos about Spencer while listening to the music *rolls spliff and opens math textbook*

One of the best songs from Juggernaut, imo.
Pre-ordered. This track's opening in contrast the ending of the track "Omega" shows just what kind of range this album has. I'm really excited!
This and Rainbow Gravity have the most memorable solos on the Juggernaut albums I think. Graveless is not far behind.
How the fuck do you even write this? I gotta get me one of them ***** guys

Perhaps the sorrow is an allusion. I'm infatuated with the emotion of his self struggle
I'd like to think that the character is reflecting on his life and everything he has done, which leads to his suicide in Graveless.

Jacob Smith Eh. I just feel that it's so out of place. I would think that it belongs in the end of The Scourge, or another song.
Failing Winter Music It's probably part of the story. Like, the tone probably reflects an event in the story.
i wish he didn't sing as much, these guys should release the instrumental version
That intro...Not trying to hate, but kinda wish this was just an instrumental. Vocals take away from the pure genius of the guitar.
What?! No way. Without the lyrics and vocals this song would be missing the key emotional element.
The chorus shows how talented this singer is. It's so simple and so haunting and so well sung. You just don't get that anymore. So shut up and buy the CD
