      Lose the pepper spray.
      Pepper spray or knife knife wins, Knife or gun. gun wins, if pepper spray is all you have go with it, Keeping your gun on you Or within arm's reach This is key.If you move the gun moves with you, Now this doesn't mean that you have to be on Red alert all the time it just means you have your tools on you. Lock the door. It would have given them a little more time if he broke in, and maybe deterred him. I think that maybe I'd want to have more weapons in different parts of the RV and maybe keep on myself too.

    As a full time rv family we make it a habit to flip the lock as we close the door. Theres not much keeping someone out so that lock is so important to give you the seconds you need to get your weapon before your door is pried open or kicked through. Make it a habit and it wont matter what time it is you will be ready. Dogs are great for rvs because of the thin walls they can hear everything approaching your unit and I know mine def will have something to say about it, even if they just warn you that someones outside your rv or home. Protection dogs paired with firearms training and some hand to hand skills will truly give you a peace of mind and allow you to enjoy life no matter where you are or what you are doing. Be responsible and stay safe.

      I lock my doors coming and going even in the daytime, even if I'm only going out in the yard or out to the truck, and even for just a minute or two. Same thing with keeping my truck locked.
      Years ago I was working in my office proper with the front door unlocked. I stepped into the back room for just a minute, then went back into my office proper. After a few minutes, I heard the toilet flush in the restroom in the hallway. I little boy about 8 years old came out of the bathroom, stuck his head into my office proper and said with a big smile on his face, "Thank you!" then walked out the front door. Never knew he had even come in. I would never disallow a parent to bring their child into my office to use the restroom. When you gotta go, you gotta go. But from that time forward I always kept the door locked to keep people from sliding right in out of my sight without my knowing about it, and put a small "Please Knock"note on the door.

    I always keep my weapon loaded, one in the chamber, and on my person at all times. If I had a RV my wife would have one of the guns we have close to her as well. Also I train with any weapon so I can use anything I use for my defense in my left or right hand. I do a lot of camping both in my father's trailer and in my self converted minivan. my dad's RV is parked seasonally at an RV park in upstate NY and my camper van is wherever I go because it's also my daily driver. one might say LOCK YOUR DOOR but you'd be surprised at how often i am in and around my van or my dad's trailer with the door unlocked or even wide open. obviously if I'm away from the campsite or going to bed the door gets locked and I always lock my van when I'm away from it in my daily activities. I've always thought that the campground in upstate NY is safe and in a good area but in theory, anyone can just walk in on foot and do what they want. I also dont stay in bad areas when I travel in my van but, anyone can still wander up to the van specifically if I'm in a rest stop or store parking lot overnight between destinations. I will definitely be more aware of my surroundings when camping. also, if you are converting a van, bus, or box truck into a camper make sure you can get to the drivers seat from the inside of the camper portion of the vehicle and concider putting any electrical, water, and sewer connections at the back of the vehicle and have some sort of breakaway so you can drive off quickly without tearing up your camper. my van has its electrical input on the side. if I drive away while still plugged in I will probably rip the connection point out of my van. if it was at the back the extension cord woukd simply be pulled out in the same way its pulled out when I unplug it.

    @matthewkeisling2776 Рік тому +1

    It’s important to realize that pepper spray is not likely to end the fight. Pepper spray provides you with somewhat of an advantage in the fight. The guy with the knife is more likely to lunge than flee. After or while spraying, one should move to create distance and find a physical barrier , if possible. Grab a weapon of opportunity, like a fry pan or even a loaded purse or handbag. The fight is on.

  • @jasoncantrell795
    @jasoncantrell795 5 років тому +2

    The bad guy was wearing eye protection. The pepper spray would have had minimal if any effect. Why does the couple seem to have an aversion to keeping their weapons ON THEM. They are in a strange place camping where literally anyone could burst through a flimsy camper door. I have learned SO much from Kevin and his training videos.

    • @USCCAOfficial
      @USCCAOfficial  5 років тому +3

      I am glad you learned a lot from these videos, Jason! This training was set up this way because the couple doesn't typically carry so they were run through the scenario based on their carry styles. It was decided this situation would be best run through with their firearms locked up so they would think more about what they would do in a situation like this.

  • @BulletSpoung

    We had an RV and before we left for a trip we would go over everything safety related. I did several things that would keep people outside the RV and make it very tuff for anyone to get in or see in. What I was after was gaining time to react, with that time it would be difficult to get inside and live. I kept a 16" Mossberg 590 with #4 buck and two Glock handguns in the RV plus I always carried one of the handguns. If it was me in your training video. As soon as I noticed that the attacker wasn't as aggressive or controlling as I first thought. I would have done everything could to have shot him several times. It would be his mistake to not control both people completely until he was gone. He also gave us a tip that he was high on drugs so I would shoot for the chest and face. I attended TDI in Ohio for training and completed several classes including CQPC, 1-5 handgun, tactical shotgun 1&2 and some fighting rifle courses plus I'm ex military.

    • @USCCAOfficial
      @USCCAOfficial  5 років тому +1

      Mawmawve, it is her personal preference to not carry with one in the chamber. I believe that if you don't carry with one in the chamber, you do need to train that way and include that extra step so you are prepared and don't have to think about chambering a round if you are in an incident.

    • @mawmawvee
      @mawmawvee 5 років тому

      This is true, but the man picked up her gun without remembering she doesn't keep a round in the chamber and it could have cost them their lives if the bad guy with the knife got upset with them. The bad guy might give into the bluff seeing the gun, but the guns were in a gun safe. Sure she can do what she wants and I agree with that. Her gun, her life, but her husband picked it up and forgot. She was out in the living area with the guy with the knife. These videos are so good to see, as they evoke a lot of thought about things and the players are brave to take part in them.

    I've been thinking about this before so that if we get an RV, I would conceal carry on body all day and night until bed...or even open carry, depending on where I was. At the very least, keeping my firearm on a table right beside you at night. Apparently, the camper was not locked while they were inside, so that would need to be done always, unless you are out at your campfire. (Although I hear most campgrounds are pretty safe) And keep your firearm with you outside at all times, especially at night. Also, he told them the drugs were in the safe, and the guy was immediately suspicious. He should have said his money is in the safe, but he was nervous, and I do get that. I really like that he had another gun hidden for just in case. It would be helpful if both he and the wife would carry too. And cameras for outside your camper, with a motion detector. That way, the guy is alerted to you before he comes in....if there is enough time. But seriously, locking the door is the most important. And maybe some special kind of locks so that they can't just kick it in. Also, don't leave windows opened in a way that someone could gain entry that way either. I immediately thought at first that the blinds should be closed and curtains pulled at night. That way they have no clue where you are in the camper. We have four little dogs, so I don't know if that would be a deterrent to a crook or not. But they would definitely be barking.

    The wife's pepper spray canister is woefully inadequate, only a mist that disables the user as much as the assailant. Much better is a magnum bear spray canister with a range of up to 30 feet which shoots an 8 second stream like a squirt gun and floods the assailant's face/body if aimed correctly. Main thing is it minimizes blowback into the user. Downside is they're kinda big for pocket carry, 8 inches long and weigh a pound but they make belt holsters for them.
    Totally legal in all US States although use in non self defence scenarios against humans is considered criminal assault.

    I use revolvers, no having to work the slide, possible jams. Poor gun placement on the husband’s part. Poor choice of words to mention ‘the safe’.

      It was definitely an interesting place to stage that firearm, leebest1A. Do you think there is any disadvantage to carrying a revolver?

    • @leebest1a470
      @leebest1a470 5 років тому

      In a situation in the RV no disadvantage; not foreseeing an extended gunfight. If the bad guy stays in the vehicle then it’s close quarters and ‘easier’ to hit your target and he’s got no solid cover.

      How would you have handled the scenario, James?

  • @Shinobi1Kenobi
    @Shinobi1Kenobi 5 років тому +2

    Early on, he loads the pistol and then (after-thought) holsters it...by cupping his hand over the muzzle end of the holster and shoving the pistol into it. SMH Poor weapons handling. If you're still making basic handling mistakes like this, you aren't ready to learn to fight with a hand gun. And you are more likely to shoot yourself than some "bad guy." Next, you never...ever...ever let someone get between you and your off-body loaded weapon! To do that, you have to plan it out BEFORE things happen. In short, this is why we carry on body. But there were much better off body options. Finally, you send the bad guy into the bedroom if you've already lost control like this. "Our stash is under the mattress on the bed" (pointing) "Just take it! Take it!" You don't leave your wife sitting on the couch with a knife-wielding maniac while you go get a 2nd gun from a safe. When he heads for the bedroom, you grab the stashed pistol that should have been on you/next to you in the first place.

      Strategic services, the intent of having the firearms locked up in the safe is to mimic how the trainees are currently carrying. They mentioned they don't carry often and keep their guns locked up in the safe. That is why it was decided to run them through a scenario with their firearms locked up. To get them thinking about what could happen and how those extra seconds it takes to go get your firearm from the safe can count in an incident.

    The last scenario should have been this short. When those people came there that were loud and that couple was uncomfortable with them as guest they needed to say we just want to be alone here could you please go we just want to be alone here could you please go the third time he should have had that pistol in his hand stepped out of the door of the camper and told those guys we just want to be alone here could you please go. In this one the suddenness of the event came because the door wasn't locked. The first secret you should have told everybody is lock the door on the travel trailer when you are in the travel trailer and when you leave the travel trailer.

    For some strange reason regular citizens not all but some thing something strange about having a round in the chamber of a semi - auto but with Revolvers they think nothing about having all Cylinders loaded 🤔 I have even scene videos of Cops searching a vehicle and make sure they say found a gun and one is in the chamber but if a Revolver is found they say nothing about the Revolver fully loaded which is funny 😁 The semiautomatic just functions differently so far has to get the first round ready for shooting 🔫

    This should be a comedy. First put your gun out of reach, don’t lock your door.put a ring camera on your roof and another In a tree with a view of your campsite. Might want them to send an alert to your family member or friend. Get a small pistol or revolver you can have on your person or nearby like in the arm of the sofa you are sitting on. Have a one handed folding knife on you and get some training to-use it.

    The RV owner should keep his firearm on him and in ready battle mode---a round in the chamber. The RV doors should be locked, even when it is occupied. Otherwise, he did better in this scenario than he did in the first scenario with a knife-wielding suspect.

    The wife should not be armed with a striker fired pistol with an empty chamber. She clearly lacks confidence in the pistol and she has not even trained adequately with the pepper spray . She cannot deploy it with the left hand. She should sell the pistol and get a Ruger LCr or Taurus 942, in 22 mag and train until she is proficient . The husband should get one as well. They are not comfortable with handguns and when it hits the fan, the attacker is not going to hit pause and let you run to your safe. Once they were separated and the husband went the bedroom, the attacker could have grabbed the wife and put the k ice to her throat. Screwed

    Could the intruder have been shot in self defense?

    • @JamesSmullins
      @JamesSmullins 3 роки тому +1

      Possibly and likely she would have been justified if she had her firearm on her and the intruder came in further to follow her husband.
      But given how this actually went I think it's better to have not fired a shot since as soon as he presented the gun the intruder fled and that's the legal end of the scenario, anything more can land you in prison.
      There's also another factor that must be considered when in rv's or mobile homes and that's bullets going through walls with near zero resistance meaning it's going to have a lot of energy left as it travels outside risking lives of others you can't see.
      I live in a mobile home and have shot angles mapped out in my head as shoot no shoot due to where family will be at different times. There's one neighbor that rents a camper behind me that I have to consider as well.
      I had a drunk meth addict come to my home in the middle of the night, I made several bad decisions that thankfully didn't cause any harm but was a valuable lesson on what I thought I would do versus what I actually did. I've now changed how I think and act and one of the first things was if I am up no matter what my firearm is on my side.
