Having suffered a dog attack that incapacitated me for six weeks, I just bought the hiking stick version. As I was watching I thought about that cap getting lost, and I saw a comment to that affect in the reviews, so I will be attaching some kind of tether to it. Thanks for this valuable information.
I think Sueann’s hiking stick is pretty cool and useful, and I think Bob’s cane is a bit clunky….however, I think the cane would actually work better. An attacker would be more likely to grab the end: Bob’s would zap them, whereas grabbing Sueann’s stick would bypass the zapper on the tip. My largest concern with Sueann’s stick is: once someone grabbed the end, they could push it back toward Sueann, thereby poking her with the spike! She needs to hold it by her side, not right in front of her.
Sueann’s stick while in theory looks like it would work as a stun gun, it could easily be taken away from her since she’s holding the tapered end. Bob’s wood cane can easily be held in a 2 hand grip. My vote is for the cane.

Bob, I suggest using wasp spray which can be purchased almost anywhere. It sprays usually 35’. When the attacker is sprayed in the eyes and face they will have to go to the hospital. Other benefits is traveling in different states without problems. We have backup weapons also but taking a life is your last resort. Happy trails my friend. Also bear spray will work as a holster.

If you use a weapon, you must make sure it doesn't get used against you. Sensei always said, "RUN!" Excellent video. Thank you for emphasizing the importance of training. ✌️♥️ ~ 🦋
For nighttime, the best non-lethal weapon I found, is a simple small high lunum tactical flashlight with the on/off button in the black. Already proven in use to work by myself, I found that if you hit somebody in the face and chest with that beam in the dark, 9 times out of 10, they're gonna turn around and go the other way. If they don't, practice using it as a weapon. Work on your boxing mobility and learn how to hammer punch with it, using both hands While keeping them mostly blinded, you can do a lot of damage on somebody with it. Some have serated edges. And they are legal to carry everywhere.
Excellent advice. If you keep a weapon of any kind and you aren't prepared to use it, don't have it. Practise, practise, practise. That includes pepper/bear spray, tasers, baseball bats, knives, firearms.... No sane person WANTS to use it, but if you need to, you'll be happy you trained. If you hesitate, fumble around with a weapon, stop to think twice...you're already hooped. Do remember, introducing a weapon into a situation does escalate it. My husband is a retired Mountie and used a taser many times in the line of duty. They fire 2 prongs on a wire into the aggressor. They do affect people differently though. He had occasions where it barely slowed a person down. Our dogs have always been terrified by the sound (never used on them). I'd like to see how a bear reacts to the sound.
Better to have and not need, than need and not have. Training and practice can improve one's odds. Your advice could cost someone their life. Having a weapon can quickly deescalate an altercation. As far as grizzly, black bear especially sows with cubs and moose, wolves and mountain lion, it's firearm only for me.
At least with black bears, just lifting a stick is usually enough to get them moving away from you. As long as cubs are not involved or they are not cornered...
I’m more of a self awareness person and I like my distance, if someone is approaching my base camp I’ll ask from a distance if i could help them with anything, I also have my dog with me for the person trying the element of surprise, so my non lethal self defense is bear spray wether it’s a stubborn human or an animal, but for the crazy moment I’m always concealing, I like my distance and I’ll read a person’s body language from a distance I would never let it get close to being a hand to hand combat, stun gun can fail and you gave the offender the opportunity to be in your space. When I’m Camping in the woods I have nothing to say to anyone and they have nothing to say to me and I certainly don’t seek solitude to have someone talk to me about yesterday’s football game, I also don’t discuss my camper/rig or tent 🏕️ or how many people are with me. Be safe have fun and respect nature.
Wow, you guys did a great job of presenting this very useful information. I work in self defense training and as a police officer. Some of your prior self defense videos had some questionable ideas. This video is full of very good advise. Thanks for all you do.
The bright light on that lady's walking stick is the the best self defense feature on it. Hard to attack someone you can't see. That paired with the stun feature would be pretty powerful. Hitting someone with a thrusting weapon is harder than you think. But it helps if they're blinded when you try.
I would like to get one of those I use a pocket knife and yes, I've had to use it before. Even got charged arrested, but then the charges were dropped because it was self-defense.
I know the video is older but also a tip for you to buy a paintball gun the tank once charged lasts a long time also case paintballs last a long time if stores right. Robbers wild predators not lethal but will leave welts I use to play paintball a lot def a good alternative.
OC spray, pepper spray, should always be #1 on everyones list. It's incredibly effective, cheap, compact, easy to keep in a pocket, belt, or backpack. I keep a can of bear spray near my door for potential wild animals or an incredibly unfortunate human, and OC spray in my center console up front, as well as in the back by where I sleep. Other devices can be difficult to use in a scary situation when adrenaline and emotions are high, if you plan to rely on such devices, make sure to practice with them and be familiar with using them without any thought involved. If it's not second nature to use it, it may very well let you down if you're forced to use it in the future.
Bob I don't know what your stance of firearms is, but they really are the great equalizer. People (especially women) need to be ready to defend themselves with the worst case scenario weapon that the bad guy will have. Stun guns aren't going to help when you have a lunatic with a firearm coming after you. Society has turned firearms into a bad thing because crazies are using them in the wrong way, which honestly validates my point. Crazy people with a gun can really only be stopped with a gun. I hate to say it, but everyone needs to have a gun as long as they are mentally stable enough to have one.
I have a Vipertek Flashlight, good for close range but I'd rather not let attackers get that close. And be aware that triggering electric stun devices should not be done for very long or very often, when not actually needed. They are designed to pass their current through flesh. No flesh contact arcing may look and sound cool, but can do damage to internal circuitry. Wouldn't want it to stop working when it's needed most. I also carry a small battery powered Personal Alarm that makes an obnoxiously loud noise when the strap pin is pulled out. Alarm will continue to sound till the pin is returned to it's hole or the 9V battery goes dead. This works best where other people are in the area, say within a stone's throw away, cause most attackers hate knowing they will be seen/interrupted. But help that's too far away to help in a timely way, if your attacker ignores the alarm, is not helpful. So if you go camping/hiking far away from everyone else, where no one can hear/respond? Better hope your attacker doesn't know this or you're in big trouble, especially without other self-defense options at hand. Best Non-Lethal I've found for keeping attackers from getting close enough to harm me, is a can of Wasp And Hornet Spray. Can hit a small nest under edge of roof over 20 ft high, so hitting an attacker's face up to 20 ft away is very doable. And once this gets in their eyes, nose, mouth, 2 legged or 4 legged, they won't be coming any closer. You can buy this item almost everywhere for low cost without needing a permit. Don''t have the legal problems that Bear Spray, Pepper Spray and Stun Devices may have, depending on where you are, especially when used against human attacker. Can be sprayed through a door/window screen to keep attackers out without doing damage to the screen. Also, can be left in plain sight in your home, at your campsite, without people freaking out the way some do around guns and other known weapons. This topic is harder for some than discussing how to poop in the wild. I treat all my self-defense items same as my fire extinguishers. Having them doesn't mean I want or expect a fire to happen. But if a fire does happen, I'll be glad my extinguishers are close at hand, easy to get at, ready to use. In this way I'm able to continue to enjoy my peaceful life, knowing I'm prepared should that peace ever be threatened.
Some states outlaw having this stuff sent to you in the mail. One workaround is to use an Amazon locker system in a neighboring state. Have it sent there.
I have been considering a walking cane. This looks like a good choice. I also stroll uphill in the woods, this could deter wild game in a pinch. Thank you.
Boy, isnt it crazy that we even have to worry now about intruders.........i had a stun gun....one of those long ones....when i tested it, it backfired on me......be sure your devices are in good working order...thanks Bob........
Thanks Bob! I always thought stuns were illegal in nj- not so! Always worried about an animal attacking me on my exercise walks- carried a small pepper spray, now will get one of those walking sticks. I also enjoyed the Crisco heater and 5 gal bucket with the pipewrap video!
I would think you'd be able to protect yourself anywhere, and I am sooooo surprised to hear this, so what is legal to carry in Ireland 🇮🇪 and how do women especially protect themselves?
@@claudiachance7036 It's basically not legal to carry a knife in the Republic of Ireland. However, if you can provide the Garda (cops, feds etc) with a valid reason for carrying a blade you might be ok. The key here is 'valid reason'. Some people carry a spray of some type as in deodorant spray, hair spray, insect spray….. something you can legally carry.
@@foreverirish132 Wow I would never think that you are not allowed to protect yourself, but I am sure your crime rate is nothing compared to the USA 🇺🇸 okay I will have my Deep Wood Off spray ready with a good reason. 🤭
I once volunteered to be zapped by a hand held zapper. It hurts and certainly will make an attacker let go or back away. There was no skin damage or burn. Based from my own experience, you can quickly get out of someone's choke hold. The electric shock is startling enough to let go. Then your best bet is to run and hope the other one won't follow.
This is great information. I am taking a cross-country road trip and camping out of my SUV. I don’t want to carry a gun just because I’m afraid , being a single female, that the gun could get grabbed right out of my hand and turned on me. So I appreciate the information!
@@carolguyer2230This isn't true. Just because you draw your weapon doesn't mean you have to pull....this can be learned with proper training and mindset. So many factors at play here, it's not that simple
@@bugchucker2634 If you are put into a situation and have no other option and you are forced to draw at that point you have reached the point the situation should be at a level pulling the trigger is a necessity not an option!
Thanks for thinking here, but where's your Flare Gun (?) - I carry three everywhere. I buy a new one, usually at Walmart every other year, One is by my bed, one near the door and the other deep in my tool box. The first two are loaded/holstered. . The one in the tool box has its 12 ga. phosphorous shell zipped to the barrel. When I worry about protecting my family, YOU have to worry about lethal, I worry about LEGAL.. Peace On.
I have an idea of mounting a couple of those 12 gauge primer perimeter alarms outside of a van, that you can trip from inside as a first line of defense.
I like a nice wood axe after some kettle bell swings. Pepper spray cannisters, stun guns, and bbguns are solid but make sure the bbs are metal. Lethals all in how you use a tool. You don't have to register your hands ❤
I had a stun flashlight a friend gave me had spikes at the end when triggered it the feel some of the electricity through the handle. I looked it up online it was a cheap about $13 I ended up just disposing it. I would suggest higher quality stun guns that are not $10 online have some reviews. Defensive weapons are a great choice lot of people keep firearms for defense probably is a good idea inside your RV. If you plan on carrying a firearm outside your RV concealed, or holstered I advise getting legal insurance. The problem is never know what police, and a DA might do when you're in a situation had to use a firearm in self-defense. DA's are elected and they apply politics to their decision-making lot of the times unfortunately they really have no risk of charging someone while you are burdened with all the risk facing a criminal trial.
Thank you for another great video. It is nice to see the options. It is key to understand the device and have practiced deploying it. This is true of most safety gear too... Thank you again for taking the time to create this video. Safe travels.
I thank you for making this video, you will definitely save a life with the information provided. The ideas you have are excellent, but you might want to consider a “Bryna” kinetic launcher. It shoots a 64 caliber plastic projectile at over 300feet per second. It is non lethal , and under state and federal law, it is not a gun. A self defense weapon that can stop an intruder as far away as 60 feet. You don’t want anyone too close to you!!!! I am a family man that just bought one, and think you should make a video about it. Life is fragile, and life is precious. Take care, and I wish you happiness.
Another option, an Umarex T50 paintball gun. There are 50 caliber paintballs, pepper balls, and nylon and steel balls. Has a built in laser sight. Get the 11 joule model.
Thanks Bob...I am one of Jehovahs Witnesses, we believe in protecting ourselves in any way but by lethal force. I'm getting me that cane. I would like the look of the walking stick better, but I think the cane😅 may be faster to aim and go. Your videos benefit so many during our turbulant times . Much love
Bear mace is very effective since it works very well at 20 ft or so. And I doubt any of the stun guns, rods etc would be able to slow down a bear. So it has dual purpose.
Im a van lifer too and I keep the BYRNA LE on hand always. Its less lethal and its the best backup you could want other than an actual gun but a gun is permanent. Less lethal is just gonna change the persons PRIORITIES and everyone goes home at the end of the day. It goes with me on the trails too. animal deterrent
Watching this video, which is very useful by the way, I keep remembering that scene from one of the Indiana Jones movies where the would-be assailant pulls out a machete and Indiana Jones pulls out a hand gun and neutralizes the assailant. Not advocating lethal force of course, if a lesser defense method would keep you safe. Train to use whatever you choose as your safety mechanism.
I think it's tight how much you ❤ the Sonoran desert! I grew up in it and always dreamt of other climates lol. But love this desert. Stay gangster Bob! I have so many weapons it's insane. Never have to use em, yes like you said intimidating attitude and arms completely covered in prison tattoos, people think about that. .. Skidatle! 😂 I say that too love it girl! ❤ Stay safe y'all please please we need you!
If your going to use a stun gun you also need mace ie pepper spray. If the perpetrator or perpetrators each have a gun it’s simple you’re out gun and your going to get hurt. So maybe you need one and train with it. Be sure you join and organization like USCCA they will provide you with the lawyers and bail you out then defend you in court. They will also train you on what to say when you have to call the cops.
My Dad taught me enough hand to hand combat where I don't need either of those items but I do have a stun gun and a small caliber handgun. I watched a video on UA-cam that said if your a woman traveling and living the van life alone to have a spare chair to put outside and a pair of men's shoes or boots so you look like you have a man traveling with you and I plan to do that when I start my van life adventure I also have a dog and she's a breed of dog that has a bad reputation. So I don't expect to have problems but will be prepared just in case
A concern with all of these devices is they require an attacker to get very close to you. Only a device that fires some kind of projectile can keep an attacker far away. How about a video that discussed these, lethal or not?
I added a Bruni New Police 9mm Pak blank pistol (very loud) and a .50 cal Umarex TR50 Paintball Revolver paintball airgun to my RV arsenal. Both are non-lethal and under $100.
At night I carry a defensive flashlight like the OLIGHT Warrior 3S. What I read is that somebody that is really hyped up on drugs does not feel pain. But if you shine a very bright flashlight in their eyes, drugs, alcohol or sober they will not be able to see for a few seconds. Then you can get away. This flashlight has a dim setting 15 lumens, the top button, that is nice for walking at night that is not too bright as to not be able to see around you. You push the tail button and it goes full bright, 2300 lumens.
Thank you for this supplemental self defense advice after I commented during your last self defense video about being mentally capable of self defense. Stun guns are a great method. I learned the hard way how effective they are. I did get glow in the dark tape to put on the business end as both ends of one of mine look alike. Be aware of laws in each state about their use. I have one more block shaped for use in the drivers cab. The smaller cigar shaped one that I accidently zapped myself with is for carrying inside the living area or outside of the ambo. I really like the cane as I do need one to walk easier. Thank you for this latest video!
I suggest if somebody doesn't run away the first time they hear that stick, you should run away as quickly as possible. If you stick that thing out there, they're going to grab it before it ever touches them and they're going to either jab you with the other end of it that's right in front of your chest or they're going to take it away from you and put 950,000 volts through you, beat you with it, stab you with it. what have you. If you're going to go all in, go all in with an all-in tool. 🤷♂️
There are some nice non-lethal handguns such as Byrna that fire rubber balls or pepper spray balls. If I was out as a nomad where I could pick up and be gone I'd consider non-lethal.
They choose to enter my home, then they choose to not value their own life. 2A is for a reason and I’m too old to squabble with some criminal who should’ve chosen not to be a criminal disrespecting me.
I have a Zapp Cane, only used it for walking. Then it stopped charging, he red charging light never goes off, only had it for a few months. I'm 72 and never walk more that 5 blocks. The cane helped my balance. Went on the internet and many people had the same problem, the cane just stopped working.
As someone who walks with a cane at least half the time the Zap Cane looks interesting if it were a little less obvious looking. My tendency would be to use the cane, drop it, and pull my S&W J frame .38. But I am not uncomfortable with firearms. You may feel differently.
I would go with pepper or bear spray. It's compact easy to use and good up to 15 feet. I also have a drywall knife. Very scary looking and you'd not want to be slashed by it.
High intensity beam flashlight with strobe like effects, is also good thing to have on you to temporarily blind an attacker and if you have a bodycam for streaming live, then you MAY potentially be able to scare off the attacker or at least, buy you some time to get away from him.
Even so much as a plain cane or walking stick with a little practice is a marvelous defense tool, combined with some self defense training can be a great combination with devastating effect. A perp with a knife has no chance against a man with a staff.

Camping in the woods I have nothing to say to anyone and they have nothing to say to me and I certainly don’t seek solitude to have someone talk to me about yesterday’s football game, I also don’t discuss my camper/rig or tent 🏕️ or how many people are with me. Be safe have fun and respect nature.
Its always best to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it 💯
Tough video to do, but it is justified in this day and age. Good job you two! Stay trained
Don't mess with you! 🙂
I know the video is older but also a tip for you to buy a paintball gun the tank once charged lasts a long time also case paintballs last a long time if stores right. Robbers wild predators not lethal but will leave welts I use to play paintball a lot def a good alternative.
Looks like Cody knows how dangerous Bob is with a weapon! 😂
As well as the other small dog 🐕, moved out of the way right away 😂
Good video, Great topic. Whatever you decide to use for protection, Practice Practice Practice
lol when Cody took off! Would be great to take on walks in case 2 leggeds or 4 leggeds try to attack.
Well we've come a long way from the other videos of how safe nomad life is. Anyone else remember those good old videos & days🥲.
Stay safe everyone 🙏
Good information even for those who don’t live as a nomad.
100% agree. The world is a dark place
I really like the cane. I could use it for walking and if a bad person was after me it just might keep me from pulling out my Glock and shooting them.
I've seen police dash cam videos where their tazer took people down but maybe legally theirs are stronger but nothing beats a well trained shepherd 👍
Great video, very informative. These days I don't go ANYWHERE without my Glock.
Thank you.
Whistle, Stun gun(the ones that shoot), bear spray, strobe torchlight and .357/.50 Air gun
Cody knows when to cut the scene! 🐶👀
Thank you so much! Your videos really are helpful and enriching
I love my Byrna.
Love all your videos Bob 😊thank you for making them. In Ireland here you’d be done for carrying anything that could protect you 🇮🇪
I would think you'd be able to protect yourself anywhere, and I am sooooo surprised to hear this, so what is legal to carry in Ireland 🇮🇪 and how do women especially protect themselves?
This is why it is always good to know basic self defense. On a positive note, violent crime percapita is very low through out the UK.
No Law against my weapon. Karate. ✌️♥️
~ 🦋
If you're going to use one of the walking sticks as a weapon, be sure to hold it with BOTH HANDS.
Great video for self protection without having to own a lethal weapon. Thank you!
That's where the training comes in. If you draw, you shoot. If you're not prepared to shoot, don't draw.
You hit the nail on the head with the hard target/easy target/confidence, well said and conveyed facts my Brother.
Bear mace. Shotgun the kneecaps.
Better hope youre fast and strong too
I had a stun flashlight a friend gave me had spikes at the end when triggered it the feel some of the electricity through the handle.
Train Train Train very good advice 👍
Good demonstrations and advice. Thank you Bob and Suanne!
Say & play prayers over speaker & quietly
Name of the author of The Gift of Fear is Gavin deBecker.
Repetition is key to being successful! It must become second nature to you to be effective as well! Great advice! Practice practice practice!!
These are great
Situational awareness and a 9mm will keep you safe
Thank you so much for your videos.hope to see you at the R T R .( gold van from tn)
Great video. And that's a very cool shirt by the way.
I'm with you. Train, train, train. I took advantage of a local dojo. Uechi-Ryu
Respect,
~ 🦋
Watching this video, which is very useful by the way, I keep remembering that scene from one of the Indiana Jones movies where the would-be assailant pulls out a machete and Indiana Jones pulls out a hand gun and neutralizes the assailant. Not advocating lethal force of course, if a lesser defense method would keep you safe. Train to use whatever you choose as your safety mechanism.
Bear spray is another equalizer. find out where in your camper you can open a small area and spray OUT towards the intruder
Thank you 😊
I think it's tight how much you ❤ the Sonoran desert! ❤ Stay safe y'all please please we need you!
i prefer my 2A items
There are moments of this vid that make me grin 😁... good info.. TY!
Awesome Video Bob! AKA Earth Angel!
A concern with all of these devices is they require an attacker to get very close to you. Only a device that fires some kind of projectile can keep an attacker far away. How about a video that discussed these, lethal or not?
I'm kind of thinking about a Byrna EP Launcher. I like that you can have a lot more distance between you and the problem.
Wonderful😮😊
Bob great content I appreciate it I’m in need of a power station I built one from DIY I’m just not comfortable with it low income veteran
I added a Bruni New Police 9mm Pak blank pistol (very loud) and a .50 cal Umarex TR50 Paintball Revolver paintball airgun to my RV arsenal. Both are non-lethal and under $100.
Glad to know this information but Poor Cody he had enough zapping 😂
Illegal in ny
@@georgewagner7787 lol. Dont ever plan on going there anyway.
Bravo thanks for sharing . lol 😆 Cody is smart
On top of hurting, stun guns actually cause a rapid sugar drop. That is what actually incompacitates the person that is zapped with it.
There are some nice non-lethal handguns such as Byrna that fire rubber balls or pepper spray balls. If I was out as a nomad where I could pick up and be gone I'd consider non-lethal.
I use a cane and this would be ideal. My wife likes the walking stick. Great and informative video!
Thank you I have a stun gn. But I really like the walking stick and cane. Will probably be buying one in the near future
They choose to enter my home, then they choose to not value their own life. 2A is for a reason and I’m too old to squabble with some criminal who should’ve chosen not to be a criminal disrespecting me.
Amen
I have a Zapp Cane, only used it for walking. Then it stopped charging,
he red charging light never goes off, only had it for a few months. I'm 72 and never walk more that 5 blocks. The cane helped my balance. Went on the internet and many people had the same problem, the cane just stopped working.
Personally I have a gladius and metal shield I train with. Should do the trick
As someone who walks with a cane at least half the time the Zap Cane looks interesting if it were a little less obvious looking. My tendency would be to use the cane, drop it, and pull my S&W J frame .38. But I am not uncomfortable with firearms. You may feel differently.
Thank for this very valuable & necessary information!
Ooo, I like the cane!
Also works as a bug zapper
I would go with pepper or bear spray. It's compact easy to use and good up to 15 feet. I also have a drywall knife. Very scary looking and you'd not want to be slashed by it.
👍 🤠 Thank you for sharing these handy protective options of which I wasn’t aware of.
Oh man, I just spit out my water, poor Cody.....hahaha
Thanks for the nice video
Even the dog knew, and ran away, or maybe he was acting for the video.
Cody needs an Oscar, he definitely added validity and shock value to the video 😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing this. I have a flashlight stun gun.
