    Steve it’s always a joy to listen to the birds in your neck of the woods. Your birds are chirping retirement songs. Our birds are chirping get up and go to work. I have yet to graduate to be lazy as sin, but it’s coming. You are so right. I need to slow it down. People will do what it takes to work it out. Thanks for the tour of your backyard. Our last hummingbird left Tuesday October 1st. I always miss them until next year. Take care buddy.

      Staying busy and active is great but slowing down a touch is important also. It's really all about balance. Not too much or little of either. I tend to fly a little slower than most but it's what I wanted in retirement. Some days I'm running like a chicken with his head cut off the next day I kick it back a notch or two. Today was a kicked back day. Just enjoying the day and knocking around. Take care. Steve

    I was a workaholic at work and found I'm the same in retirement, but relaxed and no stress, I'm a workaholic at what I want to do. I stay busy from 6AM TO 7PM and I love it. Biking, hiking, camping, working in the yard, working in the wood shop, tinkering, fixing things, cleaning veteran headstone, there's not enough hours in the day for what I want to get done. But, it's at my pace and whatever I want to do. Just knowing there's no deadlines, meetings or reports to do is worth it all. And yea, I'll take a nap here and there too.

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  12 днів тому +1

      Before I retired I was concerned about filling the hours. Since I've retired I've found that 40 hours ain't enough time to get everything done I want or need to. Doing things at my own pace tends to stretch things out and it seems like the day is gone before it starts. Doesn't even feel like work, just knocking around and enjoying the day. Take care. Steve

      Weather plays a big part in what happens in retirement for me also. That's why when winter seems to drag on I get a little antsy and cabin fever sets in. I can't get out and about like I want. Still wouldn't go back unless I had to. Thanks. Steve

    It's a great day to be retired. I've enjoyed watching the change in scenery over your shoulder the last couple of years. Fall is my favorite time of year and I look forward to seeing those trees behind you change color and slowly lose their leaves. Today in California (yeh, I know...California. But remember I was raised a North Carolina boy and, besides, there are still some beautiful places in this state if you can just forget the politics for a few minutes) we may be experiencing our last 100 degree day for the remainder of the year. Funny how 80 degrees feels hot on the way up but cool on the way back down. And I'm really looking forward to the first few rains.
    My buddy John, one of my few true friends from work, retired last December. He retired at 69...I was fortunate to retire last year at 59. He was just diagnosed with lymphoma after only being retired for 9 or 10 months. I can't say for sure if he would do anything differently now but my guess is he would love to have the last couple of years back at least, to just enjoy life while he can. So I agree with you man. Retire if you can, if you can afford it, and if you don't absolutely love your job. We only get so many good years. And I haven't missed working one single day since retiring.

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  12 днів тому +1

      Sorry to hear about your friends health troubles. Hopefully they caught it early enough they can deal with it. A friend of ours son died from it about 20 years ago. They just found it too late and it had gotten to far for them to do much with it. Lymphoma is a bad thing but fortunately it's something that they can deal with usually if it's caught in time. High 5yr. survival rate.
      Unfortunately I've know quite a few people just like that over the years. Either just before or just after retirement something like that happens. I often wonder if they would have done things different knowing the outcome. For some it takes a health scare for them to retire.
      Fall is definitely here. The big maple in the back yard has already lost all it's leaves. It always is the first to go and always earlier than every other tree. Won't be long and I'll have to clean the gutters. We haven't had 100 degree days since August and this week we'll get down to the low 40's with daytime highs in the 60's. Those first few mornings with the crisp air has a rejuvenating effect on me. Just like those first early Spring days. Just love the changing seasons and want to get out and about a lot more during these times. Take care. Steve

It has caster wheels so it doesn't roll well on the ground. Built this and just leave it parked. Just got a decent table and chair set this year. Before it was just castoffs and make do's. Spend a lot of time during the year right here. Thanks. Steve

      Leaving what we've known and done for the past decades is a scary thing to do. It's comfortable and what we know. The good thing is we get the chance to build a whole new life for ourselves. We get to decide what,where,when and how we do things. That's a great part of retirement. It's a little shaky at first but we eventually get a feel for things and regain that comfort and confidence. All the best. Thanks and take care. Steve

    Keep making these videos Steve, and stay real. I feel like I could sit on your porch and talk a few hours with you and have a great time. I'm the opposite though - I can't stand still. I'm trying to learn how to relax more. I'll get there. I retired 4 years at 58. My wife is retiring in 4 months. I've been keeping busy doing home remodeling, but it gets lonely some days while she's at work. Glad y'all made it through the hurricane ok. We have another on headed toward us again (Milton), but enough south to not be a worry for me. Take care.

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  7 днів тому

      We'd have a great time for sure. Everybody doesn't take to goofing off and relaxing like I do. Comes natural to me. Takes time to learn to slow down a touch. Just as busy if not more so than when I worked but it just feels slower and more relaxed. Doing things on my time makes a big difference. Things might change for you when your wife retires. The loneliness for sure but the relaxing could also. No problem here for either hurricane. Got people in central Florida(Cocoa Beach & Merritt Island) not much problem there either. Some wind and a few hours without power was about all. Take care. Steve

    Your garden setup is nice but you shut down the garden too early. I am in Wisconsin and I don't shut down the garden until November. North Pole lettuce will winter here in Wisconsin. I start another batch of lettuce (butter crunch) later in the year under the tomato plants to keep the lettuce cool. When the tomato plants are done I remove them in the fall and the lettuce loves the cool weather. The goal is planting north pole lettuce under the tomatoes next year to get lettuce to the end of November. The lettuce will stop growing in the winter and at the start of spring you should have lettuce.

Squash and cukes died a month ago, peppers and tomatoes still producing but slowed a lot and making smaller fruit. I've had tomatoes for New Years one time years ago. I could stretch it out a couple months but with fall coming I've got other things happening. It's a season of change and I'm changing. Take care. Steve

      Same here. One of the first things I do in the morning is check the weather. Kind of sets my activities for the day. Take care. Steve

    Steve do you exercise daily?

    • @retirementcorner
      @retirementcorner  13 днів тому +1

      Yep! I try to walk 5 days a week for about an hour. Do some body weight exercise along with some yoga and balance work about 3 times a week. Great question. Thanks. Steve

      Exact how way I felt when I retired. Didn't really care how things worked out. I was tired of it all and wanted out. All the best on your journey. Take care. Steve

    Working the way you used to was probably not healthy. I know it wasn’t for me.

      It wasn't. Doubles, 7 days, nights, weekends, holidays etc. Swing shift ain't for everybody but I really enjoyed it at first. Towards the end it got harder and harder to make the change over between shifts. Feel so much better since I retired. Thanks. Steve
