Avoiding Loneliness in Retirement
Had an experience yesterday that got me to thinking. You only get out of retirement what you put into it. You have to make and effort and be open to stepping out side the box in order to build your social connections in retirement. You just never know what simple little steps will lead to.

Everybody gets to set their own rhythm and dance however they decide. After decades of dancing to someone else's you get to dance to your own. It takes a little time and effort but it's totally worth it.That's when retirement beco...
Bleeding Cash in Retirement

Having to learn it's OK to spend without having a job in retirement ain't easy. I knew that would be our biggest problem in retirement and it has been. However we have made great strides in that area. Almost 2 years into retirement and it's gotten to where spending doesn't bring us the anxiety it has in the past. It still ain't easy but we've learned we can still pay the bills and spend what we...

Been trying to catch these for awhile. The doe shows up first then the buck towards the end. Got lucky this morning. Usually they walk through the yard and across the road in front of my house to the neighbors. Must have spooked them this morning and they took the tracks down a little ways before crossing the road. Also got a grey fox I've been trying to get a video of. Very elusive. Enjoy

Time to Increase Our Retirement Budget

After 3 years with the same budget I think it's time to increase it a little. Our buffer is starting to become regular spending so we need to bump it up a little. Thankfully my first "Raise" will kick in and we won't have to increase our income but still have the buffer.

The Importance of Having a Schedule in Retirement

It's not as bad as it sounds and I found out last year it can actually make retirement great. It's more of a loose outline than an actual schedule or routine. It doesn't go by the clock on the wall and yo're totally in charge. You can change it or drop it anytime you chose.

Time Flies in Retirement

Filling your hours in retirement seems daunting until you retire. It's so easy to get distracted and stuff always comes up. You actually get busier than when you were working. That's where a retirement schedule comes in handy. You'd hate to get so busy you don't get to do what you looked forward to in retirement. Scheduling your off days just for you helps with that.

I'm into month three of retirement and it is stressful. Some people just see the luxury of not going to work, they don't see that retirement is a whole new form of work but instead of earning you are trying to not spend. My husband is retiring next month and it feels like a cliff. I know it will be ok, I've been "broke" before and as you said, I got used to spending. I just wish I'd not stress about it so much.

I guess a lot of people never give much thought to what retirement is really like. In a way you can't really understand the conditiions until you are in it for real. Unfortunately most of us go through life with this image created that retirement is the golden year period of life, as if to say everything just magically becomes peace and prosperity. So it is not unusual that people arrive to this period with the wrong ideas but that does not prevent one from stepping out and giving some thought and planning when you have stepped into that era of life. It can be very unhealthy to try and cultivate too many friendships, to try and be too involved with community. Ease into it, enjoy the new freedom of retirement. I retired at 58, not planned as it was a situation of job moved on with the acquisition of the company I worked for so I ended up entering retirement as sort of a back door out of a disappointing end to the work career. At first it was troubling, lots of mental trauma but gradually I realized I was free to start something else in life, to make a mark to essentially live a second life and I did. It ran its course and succeeded in restoring my self worth and feeling of satisfaction with what I accomplished. Retirement is not scripted, there is no rehearsal, it is once through for all the marbles so don't fret, use the wisdom of your age, the accumulation of your knowledge and skills, step up to the challenge but be careful with placing new friendships at the top of the priority list.

I never expected to be lonely in retirement but it happened to me because my husband/ best friend died shortly before I retired. We were both very introverted but we had fun doing everything together since high school. There was an older lady at my church who met her second husband at a Dollar store after he struck up a conversation with her in line and they discovered that they were both widowed.

I retired at 55 , left 40 % on the table 8 years ago . It took 3 years for me not to wake up in a panic thinking about the 200 things I had to . Now a days i dont know the day of the week . For me, it's not retirement. it's debriefing my life.

Being single makes it a lot harder I believe. Retirement can be a great period of life but it's hard work. For decades work provided about everything for us from friends to money. In retirement it's all up to us. Being open and willing to give things a chance can make all the difference. You're new to retirement so give it some time and try a little bit of everything you want. You just never know what might make a difference. Take care. Steve

It's hard for some people to loose their social structure when they retire. As we age our world tends to shrink as friends and family die or move away. Also as our health starts to fade and we can't do like we used to. Loneliness can creep in. It takes work on our part to find ways to keep it at bay. Thanks. Steve

This very thing has been one of the most shocking, positive things that has happened to me in retirement. When I was working I rarely said anything to people I didn’t know. Now that I’ve been retired for a number of years I get a great deal of joy out of striking up conversations with totally random strangers. I will usually just try to make a funny comment about something that is happening right there and see where it goes. Some people chuckle and walk away but many will come back with a conversation. Fun.

HA, Burton (from Lowe's paint department) and I were just talking about this. Is Google spying on my conversations ? IDK. Anyway, we both like Cadillacs - he was mixing paint to match the dark blue that Cadillac used on it's engines and valve covers back in the 50's. He told me he is retired and said when the time comes to buy a new or newer car, he's got a little apprehension since he said that regular paycheck has stopped. One of those FIRE guys (Dion) said his target was 4x what he needed for monthly income so that he can weather any storm. Water heater pricing is nuts as new units start at 500+. The 700 if installed is not bad at all. My area, they want 1K. Good thing I am handy.

Good thing we shouldn't need another vehicle for a few years. When the time comes we'll get a note just like always. If I waited till I could weather any storm I'd never retire. Just ride the waves like always. Come out a little seasick at times but it keeps life interesting. That was 2 years ago it might be a grand or more now. That was an installed price. Not a bad price but letting go of that much money at one time gives us the willies. Thanks. Steve

I have been retired for a year and a half. I'm not lonely, not bored nor do I regret quitting my job. I also don't need people or friends as they have been more negative for me than positive in my life. If you are a person that loves people and like the job you are doing you should stay with it to get what you need more than money. A job was always just a way to make money for me, but I understand some people need more.

I'm in my late 40's and sometimes when I'm eating by myself and I see an older/elderly person eating alone at a fast food establishment and quietly staring ahead, I do wonder if I ask to join them at their table to eat and small talk --- how would they receive that offer? Just wouldn't want to unnecessarily perceive I may have a motive.

That could be a problem and something I personally wouldn't do. I generally stick with "Good Morning" or "hello" something small like that. Then let them run with it or not. Sometimes it starts a conversation, sometimes not but it's their decision. Got to remember you know nothing about them either and they might be sitting alone for a reason. Friendly but smart and safe also. Thanks. Steve

Great subject Steve and you hit the nail right on the head exactly, I've been retired for the past 9 years now without any friends who would ever bother to call me but only two, and because of their locations & situations we never get together to meet in person. At 72 I've been an Introvert and loner most of my life but occasionally I do get the largest mental boost from having conversations with total strangers whenever I can too. I just completed a 3 month 3 day a week pulmonary rehabilitation program and between my rigorous work out sessions and through my interactions with the medical staff and the other patients each time I managed to get a physical as well as a great mental boost each time. 😊

When we start SS and add in my pension that should be all we need. Having the money ain't the problem for us. It's learning we can spend that gave us problems. The mugginess is what makes it so bad. Been checking into kayaking myself this summer. Always wanted a canoe but the kayaks are what I see a lot of here both in the stores and on the river. They have gotten right popular around here for fishing. Something I'm looking at trying next year. Have fun. Take care and stay cool. Steve

Great discussion. For some people, the social circle is very small. No spouse and siblings and parents have passed on. Kids are in a different state. There are plenty of lonely people who are married. Whatever your circumstances are that has you in a small circle, make the effort to find what brings meaning in your life.

Exactly! My world is pretty large now but it tends to shrink as we age. Trying to get used to stepping outside my box or world now so it won't be such a struggle later. Some retire straight into a shrinking world and have to put in the effort from the get go. Thanks . Steve

We’re pretty fortunate. You retired with zero debt and some cash set aside. We live pretty frugal and we still bring in a solid income. Good luck to all 6 Saturday a week retirees.

We're the same. No debt, low expenses and cash on the side. Makes retirement fairly easy but it's still hard for us to understand we can spend and still make out fine. Thanks. Steve

Sure is. Currently we don't have any but maybe 2025 you never know. Exactly how I met my wife. Drove down to S.C. to see my granddad and met her. Take care. Steve

That’s a huge thing for a lot of people. We have each other and some church groups we attend and we are happy as clams.

I have no problem now but I'm thinking about later in retirement it could become a problem. Friends and family start dying or moving away. Start losing some mobility and can't get out and about like I can now. Our world tends to shrink as we age. Trying to think ahead just the same as I did for retirement. Exactly why I enjoy your channel so much. Kind of gives me a heads up as what's to come and how to deal with it. Y'all have become kind of a roll model for me. Thanks. Steve

We see them so much here in our yard, as well as bear and coyotes. Even an occasional fisher cat now and then.

Rare to see a bear around here. About once or twice a year you hear about one around but I ain't never seen one. Fisher cats we don't have. Coyotes and foxes we do. Seen one about a month ago and trying to get some video of him. Thanks. Steve
