I'll be honest. While I do like His Dark Materials and all the better stuff in it (can't wait for season 2). I still have a soft spot for the movie. This scene with the gypsies are a lot better in my opinion. In the movie, they are this mysterious sailing people with beautiful and interesting aesthetics. Traditional in their craft of wood, ropes and sails. Something I think the series lack (Don't get me wrong, the gypsies in the series are cool to, I just personally like this version better).

They did cut out some of the other stuff that were important in the book like the head of Stanislaus Grumman and the cocktail party, but I'll give it credit for getting some of the other stuff right particularly this scene and the conversation between Lyra and Ragnar Sturlusson (Iofur Raknison in the book).
The gyptians in the series are Politically Correct crap. If you're putting together a raiding party to go into battle, you're not going to take a disabled guy who can't even hold a rifle.
Lara can read the alethiometer becouse she hasn't cristalized her inner child. extremely important to take good care of it. It is the only reliable thing for the future.b
It's on the soundtrack isn't it? I think it's either "Dust" or "The Golden Compass" Listen to them both and then decide...But I'm pretty sure it's the first one...
I might agree with that, but the suspension of disbelief is hard to hold on to (whilst stoned) when the key actor isn't ready for prime time. I had such high hopes (pun intended) for this film, the novels changed my life.

This whole scene played differently, it was originally Serpent for spies (sneaking), Crucible for the information the spies were seeking for and the Hive for the work they were doing (just like the series). The Alethiometer spew back up an Anchor and a Bird and Lightning bolt. The "it only stopped at the hourglass the second time around" comes from it being the second spy getting killed. The one with the Anchor tattoo.
As adaptations go I thought this one was decent. The only reason I hold it in such low regard is the omission of the book’s ending. That was a horrible decision, and a travesty for fans. And it was only made worse by knowing the ending was filmed, and from the look of the trailers damn near completed. That they never released an extended cut or even released the clip when they knew they weren’t going to make the sequels has spurned my hatred of this movie to this day. Which is a damn shame, as LaraMagi said, the movie had a solid cast and got many other things right.
The representation of the alethiometer in the film is a lot more beautiful than the tv show

yes I prefer the movie version in some ways too. Nicole Kidman and other actors were amazing, the scenes had more depth to them
